It's so weird. My mom's "job" from the early 2000s was to go around town to antique shops and buy porcelain dolls- then sell them on eBay as haunted dolls haha. People would drop fat stacks for a good story.
This painting used to disturb me, but once I learned about the sequel paintings and the backstory, like the poem and the art galleries, I just became more interested. Especially those sequel paintings, they almost make me want to read a novel or short story based around that surreal world of "The Hands."

It would've been smart for the buyer of the painting to sell it mere days later, cheaper than he bought it and with very little explanation as to why... it would've only fueled the idea that there was something about the painting he just didn't want nothing to do with and as such, it would've probably sold for even more.

When I was a kid my mom used to frequent this old thrift store ran by an elderly man who knew some crazy card tricks. Even at just age 9 I was skeptical about "magic " and I knew how most card tricks were done because my uncle had taught me the tricks that magicians tended to use. This elderly man however could do some crazy things that there was no logical explanation for and on top of it he could read minds. It was spooky. He'd ask us to guess a number and he always guessed correctly regardless of if I was thinking of the number 1 or some crazy random number like 32,570 ...not to mention I'd be thinking of something irrelevant like what I was going to do or eat later that day and he would bring it up. But the worst was this painting he had on the wall. It was of a huge hand and drawn into the fingerprints were faces. Each face had the expression like it was suffering or in pain and just looking at it made me feel immense sadness. The guy caught me looking at it and said that the faces on the hand belonged to people who had tried stealing from his shop and he caught them and their souls were forever trapped in the painting. He then made a joke about that's why their was a hand in the painting (5 finger discount) my mom overheard this and sensing I was unsettled said "time for us to get going " as we were walking out the door the man yelled enjoy your London broil and mashed potatoes and eat all your carrots kid" Once we were in the car and on the way home my mom turned to me and asked how the hell he knew what we were having for dinner? We never went back. That "5 finger discount " painting however has not left my mind in over 25 years. I wasn't the type of kid that was easily scared nor do I believe in supernatural things but that hand and its tormented faces has stuck with me all this time..if any painting was haunted or had some supernatural things going on it was that one.
As someone who dabbles in magic tricks and has spent years debunking this kind of thing, its really easy to pull tricks off like this if your skilled enough. We humans are easily tricked and give information more openly and freely then most people realize. Its still really cool and us humans do have some "telepathy" . empathy is primarily what makes us human and the major force of our evolution (that and psilocybin stoned ape theory) . really cool stuff and no magic necessary.
I'm glad an ebay rumor about his work got Stoneham more attention! Its such a cool painting, and I hate the idea of it just being shared for the ebay story without anyone knowing that theres such a cool artist behind it.
I remember reading this story in a little book at the library, it freaked me out, but I couldn't stop reading the story over and over and imagining scenarios in my head about what the family went through. I forgot about it until now.

As soon as I heard the name of the painting, I remembered the page in a book talking about it. "Weird, Scary & Unusual" was the name. It talked about a lot of strange stuff like this. I was so freaked out just reading about it, even though the book never showed the image. But I remember reading the deaths involved with this painting that I wasn't sure how to feel. Now I'm just uncomfortable with it that watching just a few seconds of this video triggered my superstitious radar so much. But it's Whang!, so I'll risk having 365 days left for a cool dude. It would've been smart for the buyer of the painting to sell it mere days later, cheaper than he bought it and with very little explanation as to why... it would've only fueled the idea that there was something about the painting he just didn't want nothing to do with and as such, it would've probably sold for even more.
If he sold the painting for less than he bought it now would he make money of the next sell? He already sold it. And he lost money. You didn't think this through did you?

Jimmy Jamestown Massacre Their streaming service is outdated and hasn't changed much since 2012 (They're still using Flash), around 3/4 of their shows available are region locked outside of US, director of CR is known to name search and mass report people who post anything anime related online, like pictures, clips, fan art and even discussions (apparently, the concept of anime itself is his intellectual property). For him, pirating anime is on equal grounds as racial genocide.
Another problem regarding their outdated service is that they have money to improve it, but instead, use it to fund shows nobody is interested in that barely have anything to do with anime (search High Guardian Spice) or events that mostly steer into the 'cringe' territory.
Great video, there was a mass produced painting called the Crying Boy that supposedly caused house fires in the UK in the 80s, this reminded me of that somewhat.

Never heard of this one before, but I do remember the "Ghost in a jar" listing from the time.
When I was a kid my mom used to frequent this old thrift store ran by an elderly man who knew some crazy card tricks. Even at just age 9 I was skeptical about "magic " and I knew how most card tricks were done because my uncle had taught me the tricks that magicians tended to use. This elderly man however could do some crazy things that there was no logical explanation for and on top of it he could read minds. It was spooky. He'd ask us to guess a number and he always guessed correctly regardless of if I was thinking of the number 1 or some crazy random number like 32,570 ...not to mention I'd be thinking of something irrelevant like what I was going to do or eat later that day and he would bring it up. But the worst was this painting he had on the wall. It was of a huge hand and drawn into the fingerprints were faces. Each face had the expression like it was suffering or in pain and just looking at it made me feel immense sadness. The guy caught me looking at it and said that the faces on the hand belonged to people who had tried stealing from his shop and he caught them and their souls were forever trapped in the painting. He then made a joke about that's why their was a hand in the painting (5 finger discount) my mom overheard this and sensing I was unsettled said "time for us to get going " as we were walking out the door the man yelled enjoy your London broil and mashed potatoes and eat all your carrots kid" Once we were in the car and on the way home my mom turned to me and asked how the hell he knew what we were having for dinner? We never went back. That "5 finger discount " painting however has not left my mind in over 25 years. I wasn't the type of kid that was easily scared nor do I believe in supernatural things but that hand and its tormented faces has stuck with me all this time..if any painting was haunted or had some supernatural things going on it was that one.

As someone who dabbles in magic tricks and has spent years debunking this kind of thing, its really easy to pull tricks off like this if your skilled enough. We humans are easily tricked and give information more openly and freely then most people realize. Its still really cool and us humans do have some "telepathy" . empathy is primarily what makes us human and the major force of our evolution (that and psilocybin stoned ape theory) . really cool stuff and no magic necessary.

As soon as I heard the name of the painting, I remembered the page in a book talking about it. "Weird, Scary & Unusual" was the name. It talked about a lot of strange stuff like this. I was so freaked out just reading about it, even though the book never showed the image. But I remember reading the deaths involved with this painting that I wasn't sure how to feel. Now I'm just uncomfortable with it that watching just a few seconds of this video triggered my superstitious radar so much.
But it's Whang!, so I'll risk having 365 days left for a cool dude.
Edit: Didn't know about the sequel paintings or poem, but I love his art style and the story he tells. I want a movie based around those, if I'm honest.
