Wish I'd seen this 11 months ago--Jimi what an eargasm of a vid! Incredible tones as expected but damn, I will have to agree with the others, you are quite the badass player-chops-o-plenty! As a Mesa Boogie owner I had to laugh, yeah the million different tweaks make it a royal pain in the ass sometimes and to do a profile? Oh man...However all that work paid off, it's astounding just like your EVH Brown Sound pack. Heard Simon using it on the VH 1 album show and my mind was blown like everyone elses! I just got a Kemper recently and now it looks like the Sykes pack is also going to be a must have! Appreciate all the work you put into your profiles---it shows!

All things considered you've done a great job here! (Nice playing too btw). Sykes used a dual amp setup with a detune harmoniser to thicken and widen the sound. Some of the EQ curve you mention occurs as an artefact from that style of processing, it increases the presence whilst rounding off the harshness. You can tweak til infinity you will never achieve that with any EQ. When the stems were passed to Keith Olsen for mixing he complained the guitars weren't in tune as Sykes' picked so hard and with so much vibrato it would take a long time to settle into pitch. He went ahead and pitch corrected some of the guitar tracks which affected the tone further. If you listen to some of the early demo versions of those Whitesnake songs on the 'Evolutions' CD , hes using a Rockman initially but then later sessions he's using the Mesa and the tone is waaay different than in post.

  • @ampman50

    Great playing Sir.
The thing about Sykes, most people forget, his pickup choice .
Those dirty fingers pick-up are not forgiving.Gibson’s answer to to after market super distortion pickups of the late seventies.
This his inherent sound at that time.
No body plays these now, ( newer ones different) sounding.
These are brutal, but John made this his sound.
Keep up your playing Sir, you are an inspiration.

Hi Top Jimi: Nice job on the "shreddy" part of the guitar solo at 3:44. WRT to the profile: I think the real thing that missing is the more stereo chorus. If you listen to the original tone, it definitely has more stereo chorus than the Kemper you've created. Moreover, it is a very "deep" tone with a lot of plate reverb and delay I think as well; he definitely has about 20% "air" in between the microphones and the speaker cabs. I've always thought of Skye's tone on that record being like Randy Rhoad's "Flying High Again" album guitar tone on steroids, but with less mid-range as well (as you've dialed in). Both of those iconic tones have the character of "pure steel", truly "metal" in character, which is what makes them so recognizable. But, for this profile, I think it forms a good "base" for a player to build on to achieve Sykes's EXACT 87' tone.

Also, we have no idea about what processing was used during the recording and mixing. Compression, EQ, reverb, and it sounds like he was using some kind of hush. Also it’s clear to me on some parts they used room ambience “room mics” for certain leads. I’ve tried to find out what console was used but since they recorded in several different studios who knows? Neve, SSL, I’ve even heard a Trident and MCI. So many questions left unanswered.

If you want to nail the tone better, the Japanese published a book entirely about John Sykes, his tone and the entire setup and the recording process he used on 87 and other albums. One of the surprising things about the Whitesnake tone is that a Fender Stratocaster with single coils was vital to the sound on record and how it was layered with his Les Paul which was loaded with Seymore Duncan Dirty Finger pickups. You did a great job gettibg super close to the tones, but based upon book (my copy is buried somewhere and I can't get to it right now) I can see how there are only a few pieces of gear necessary to copy it exactly that you'd need.

HI Top Jimi: I must agree with so many others - NUNO BETTENCOURT's tones need to come next. Especially hard to get will be the tone he had on the 1st EXTREME album (1989), the tone used on "Teacher's Pet", "Mutha, Don't Want to Go to School Today", "Play With Me" (from Bill and Ted), etc... That tone is like Lynch's "Under Lock and Key" tone, but on steriods!! It's amazing the way Nuno's tone "crys" on that album, just iconic! To me, Nuno's 1st album tone is "holy grail tone", one I've always been alble to get close to, but never 100% match with ANY guitar emulation software. _NOTES: I remember him saying an interview that he was running the ADA MP-1 into a Mesa Boogie Head (not sure which model), using the ADA as a "preamp" of sorts, along with using a BBE Sonic Maximizer between the cabinets and the amp head. Nuno also said a lot of people think he was using a "half cocked" Cry Baby Wah on the front end to get the extra bite and "honk" that 1st tone, but Nuno denied that (whether he was being truthful or not is another thing, as "tone secrecy" was a big thing back then, but you're mileage may vary). _ HOWEVER, on the 2nd album, Nuno's tone is easier to dial in, as well as the albums after that, but - man - the first 1989 album. Just load up the song "Teacher's Pet" below and you can hear how amazingly "tight" the low end is while still retaining great sustain and clariy on the high end (it does have that "ADA/Boogie" flavor to it). Just an amazingly "clean", yet distorted tone, at the same time. He's also got stereo chorus and delay on it as well. Here's "Teacher's Pet" - th-cam.com/video/UKeJMp1jqUQ/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=24%2F7DynamiteSongs. In closing, thanks a million in advance for your future work on Nuno's tone, and for all the great work you've tone before. Also, how about more Trash tones - Metallica, Testament, Anthrax, etc. all come to mind as iconic amazing tones.
