    Pinky strength can be an issue with guitar so I've made a guitar exercise that will show you how to increase pinky strength and dexterity so you can increase pinky control and independence.

      Do the "spider walk" every day for 5 to 15 minutes. Starting on the 5th fret with highest string (low E), place each following finger on the next fret down (index on the 5th, middle on the 6th, so on...). With this exercise,
      a) you're stretching each finger apart
      b) you're working on finger dexterity
      c) you're improving your finger coordination
      Try to move 1 individual finger at a time to the string below (without moving the other fingers).
      At first, you may not be able to stretch your fingers far apart to comfortably place each finger on a different fret. But don't give up. Even though at first it may be very sloppy, do the best you can.
      You can first start with the index or with the pinky, moving down. It doesn't matter which one you start with. I suggest you alternate.
      After you move all fingers to the lowest string below, go back up one finger at at a time. Just do this exercise up and down.
      First time I tried it, I could not even position my fingers to start the exercise, let alone move each individual finger from one string to another. But I stuck to it for a few days and got better and better every day.
      (Tip: push your elbow further out to bend at the wrist so that your fretting hand curves over the fretboard. This will give you move leverage and extra length you need.)

    A video on tips for chords and stuff that require your to spread your fretting fingers wide across the fretboard would be nice. Even doing bar chord and power chord shapes towards the end of the neck feels like you have to over reach and strain a little to get the index and ring finger in the proper placement with enough strength to hold the chord.

      As far as sore finger tips it's been 4 years now and finally if I take it very slow in practicing I can play longer (time wise) but only a little more work gets done. I am 62 yrs old. Hardly what I'd call calluses but less pain. Only thing works is dry hands, barely touch strings(ha-ha) and stretch out practice. The other is finger tip covers but then it's like you never played after using them. Recommend only if you really have to play. Biggest suggestion is start young and keep playing so you keep those darn calluses. Ha-ha. Keep playing and hope this helped. Thanks Tony, you're great. Your beard is coming along nicely. Just trimmed mine. :=} Steve

    I think a good slightly advanced version of this, to help with pinky strength and dexterity, is using the ring finger for the "one" stroke and hamering on with the pinky for the "and" stroke. If u can hammer on/pull off with ur pinky and keep a clean sound, you're doing work.

  • @TheOuttabody
    @TheOuttabody 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    We’re supposed to press down on the string with the tips of our fingers, not with the flat fleshy part. Since the pinky finger doesn’t have much flexibility or strength, it doesn’t seem possible at first to use the tip with the pinky finger.
    Any advice on how we’re supposed to use more of the tip with the pinky finger or do you think we should not worry about it at first?
    Also, I’m sure that many people can relate to the other issue when using the tip with the pinky finger. That is: since the tip of the pinky finger doesn’t have much of “surface area”, even if you manage to press down on the string with the tip, the string, more often than not, slips and slides off the tip while trying to hold it down.

  • @Gutslinger
    @Gutslinger 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Although I think there's some truth to there being weakness in certain digits, especially in certain awkward chord positions, I think I've been having a problem with my finger tips getting sore, making me not fret/hammer-on/pull-off the strings with enough pressure. It makes me mistake it for finger weakness.. When I finally build up some calluses, they almost immediately peel, resetting me with soft, sore fingers again. I think having soft girly hands and washing them a lot is partially to blame, but idk. It really hinders my practicing when I can't fret the strings with the proper amount of pressure, from having sore fingertips.. I know this is a beginner's problem, which makes it even more aggravating, considering I've been playing for roughly 3-4 years.

    • @tacguitar
      @tacguitar  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used to have the same exact problem, and I found that if I was able to keep my hands dry (mainly this meant using gloves when washing the dishes) my callouses would stick around much longer. Hang in there, and if you find something that works for you please share it :-)

      Welp that's a bummer. I just started learning the guitar months ago. I have a girly hand and swim a lot and yeah it stings a little when i play the guitar. I'll probably have the issue for life. I wonder if there's artificial callus that i can put in my hand not counting super glue seems expensive and troublesome in the long run. I wonder if there's a remedy like something of a bullet vest for my finger.

    • @tacguitar
      @tacguitar  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Ray,
      Great question and there are two things that may help. First: make sure you are using the very tip of your finger tips when fretting the chord. This will keep your fingers out of the way of the other strings. Second: try moving the palm of your fretting hand closer to the fretboard, this will effectively increase the arch in your fingers allowing for more string clearance and ultimately better chord clarity :-)

      Try holding the guitar classical style with the lower bout on your left leg instead of your right. This may give you a better access angle to the fretboard and limit wrist issues :-)

    When I'm trying to do a barre chord, my pinky doesnt really cooperate that much. Since I put my strength to curl up my pinky, the middle finger kinda bends and does like a weird position and doesnt really do anything. And whenever I put strength in my pinky finger it bends to a flat, awkward position. Pls help me out

    I am concerned about controlling flyaway fingers, especially little finger..I have heard on many videos on here, that a person can never truly play fast, smooth, and pro if they cant keep their fingers super close to the fretboard at all times.. so how to conquer this? I am not a beginner, but somehow, never really conquered this issue.

    Are you sliding the little finger or are retracting it before moving to the next fret?

    • @tacguitar
      @tacguitar  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      David, I am lifting up the little finger when moving from string to string, but sliding it along the string when going from fret to fret :-) I hope that helps :-)

    I have very small hands. I can get good contact and connection with my pinkie by itself, but when say in a Gmaj chord I need to use my ring and middle (index?) Finger I CANT get the e string to ring correctly. I can modify the fingering using pinkie, pointer, middle, but don't what to make life difficult later... like when I need to play a CMaj chord right after. Can you tell me ( I know it's hard when you can't see the issue!) What you might do, look at, investigate, or just be patient for pinkie to catch up?
    I also have an unusual crook at the end of my pinkies making

    • @DontUBaDiva
      @DontUBaDiva 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oops making the pinkie turn in towards my other fingers. It makes it so that it's as if to get the normal Gmaj finger configuration my pinky needs to pass directly through my ring finger.

    • @tacguitar
      @tacguitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One thing that you may want to try (if I am reading correctly :-) ). Would be to bring the palm of your fretting hand closer to the bottom edge of your fretboard. This will allow better arch in your fretting fingers and hopefully clearer notes :-)
