Thought he was just another bass memer back then, but i still subbed. But two years later, I still get stank face from this dude. That’s coming from a guitar player. That being said, I still don’t like acoustic bass 😂
I'm in my 70's, and used to play guitar. Pretty much most of my life I always wondered what a bass lead would sound like, and why it was never done before. Well if it was done before I damn sure didn't know about it. Then I stumbled on to your video's and for the last 6+ months have been blown away by your mastery of the bass. Thank you for bringing these videos out and showing the world just how versatile a bass guitar actually is when played by a master such as yourself. Again, thank you and keep the vids coming. God Bless.
It makes me happy today that the bass is getting more recognition as an instrument. The guitar is cool, but the bass needs its share of attention for how awesome it is.
Check out Primus, their bass is leading most of the time. They play some ,,special,, music, so you may not be into it for reasons other than the bass though.
"why it was never done before" uh oh you've attracted the attention of the Primus and Rush fans. You should probably run, or else they might try exposing you to weird time signatures!
Best variation on "Just the two of us" I've heard in a long time. And - for me - the best solo you've played since the "impossible" one and maybe the Jack Black percussion...
Damn Charles, I feel like you've really been stretching your wings and succeeding at breaking out of some of your standard sounds/patterns over the past several compositions. Your commitment to rounding yourself out as a musician, composer, and performer is really impressive.
I'm 38 and about a year ago my 16yo son asked me to buy him a guitar. I got my first bass when I was around his age, but between military service, and just general "adulting," I hadn't been able to play since my teenage years. So, I got it for him, and afterwards started looking at basses for myself, and also starting watching youtube vids, mostly you and Davie. I finally just pulled the trigger and got myself an Ibanez GSR205, and the past couple days have been amazing. I just wanted to say thank you, for your contribution to reigniting the passion I had 20+ years ago. I'm sure once my fingers callus up again and stop hurting, they'll thank you too. Lol
Charles - When I'm stressed, my job is driving me nuts, whatever has gotten into my head, I can always pull up one of your videos and just let it all go. A pure joy to watch (and listen), and you clearly love what you do. Your passion, your calling...it's a delight to watch/listen to you play.
The fact that Charles sounds this amazing on an ACOUSTIC bass is just INCREDIBLE!! How in the world do you tap on acoustic bass that clean and precise?! You truly are one of a kind. The very best of the best!
My acoustic bass sounds nothing like that, but then again it's not amped up. No doubt he's an amazing bassist but I'd like to hear an actual acoustic bass song.
@@richardaguirre3719 well its either amplified with piezo or mic, neither would equalize poor tapping to be the same volume as a slap without audible distortion, it's still not an electric guitar with mags and distortion lol
The sound of this bass is soooo beautiful! I’m always very impressed by your dexterity, especially in this video. An acoustic bass doesn’t feel like an electric one and I imagine that you need more precision to make it sound that perfect. Incredible performance.
Holy cow Charles. Wow! The nuance with which you play is what always knocks my socks off. My kid is at Berklee, ( guitar) and you are a part of the reason why.
I love how Charles shows in every video how to make a solo full of musicality, and not just "spitting" a slap (or any other) technique over a fingerboard.
Charles one thing you do so well in your composition is being able to sound like playing every single instrument this piece had a little everything Jazz Spanish (Bass) loved it.
I wonder how much magic he does in post to clean it up - I agree I’ve never seen other bassists do what he does but it almost seems too good o be true lol
One way you can tell how awesome Charles is is that he puts out new videos faster than it would take most people to remember one of these pieces, let alone learn it up to speed.
1: You put out these videos on pretty much a daily basis. 2: You don't play the same piece over and over each day. 3: As far as I know, all of these pieces are original, bar the "if _________ was the hardest song in the world" and videos like it. 4: HOW??? The quality that you are able to maintain on such a regular upload scedule is amazing, absolutely amazing. 5: I think this may be my new favorite, with my last one being the tune you played titled "50 bass playing techniques" (or something like that)
When you are watching a charles berthoud video you can only remain completely astonished from the beginning to the end...wow what a complete musician!!
Man, Charles playing is always like a slap on The face! Cause you always think he wont have anything better and he always shows you are ridiculously wrong.

Perhaps your greatest sleight of hand in this clip, is getting such a satisfying tone out of a Fender Kingman. I've picked up at least a half a dozen of these, and always been disappointed. Proof that it's the craftsman, and not the tools...
Charles just blows me away with his consistency - not only some of the most technically skilled bass playing I've heard, but also every one is just so downright FUN! Really makes the most of each instrument and playing to its unique sound.
