Pure gum turpentine is an expensive luxury. OK it's a natural product but the much cheaper mineral spirits does just as well. It's included in the recipe only to thin the mix giving it time to soak deep into the fibers. It does not act as a driers for the linseed oil, but is purely a vehicle to get the BLO in. If you absolutely need your BLO to cure faster, add some terebene paint driers., but otherwise a dry sunny environment will soon dry the oilcloth

White beeswax is made from the cell cappings when honey is extracted from the comb. It is more expensive, but to my mind, no better than yellow beeswax
As apposed to throwing it in the trash...some company taking it far away from where you are so YOU don't have to worry about it anymore....and burying it under the ground to rot for eternity in some landfill.....?

I think your firekit bag is great. Love the look of the oilcloth treatment. In fact, I like the look even more than the Pathfinder bag.
I buy old sheets at Goodwill and soak then in leftover (thinned a bit) latex or oil paint. Works pretty good.

why cant you dunk the whole cloth into the container and then hang it up?
This work also without wax and then you dont have this waxy feeling. It will take much longer of course untill the oil is dryed out.
Most how use this method use a hair dryer or heat gun to melt the wax into the cloth
