Diogenes is one of my favourite philosophers of all time. He is the ancient troll. Not only did he throw the chicken into Platons lecture, he also did many other things. Like, how he wandered around the street with a lamp in his hands in broad daylight, and when people asked him what he was doing, he answered that he kept looking for an honest man.
Or when he was chilling in his barrel (yes, he lived in a barrel) and wanted to fetch some water to drink with his cup, he saw a child drinking from his hands and was like *a child has beaten me in plainness of living* then he proceeds to yeet the cup and used his hands to drink water from the river.
Or when Alexander the Great (mind you, this guy startet to fight in wars since his teenage years and was a general with 16, who led thousands of soldiers to war) visited him to fulfill a wish for him (you can look up why) he asked Diogenes if he wanted something and he said *yes, stand a little out of my light*. Alexander was struck by this and was impressed by his haughtiness who had nothing but scorn for him. They joked about Diogenes but Alexander said *But truly, if i were not Alexander, i wish i were Diogenes*.
    And many more 😊

23:57 As a Japan railfan, some stuff to clarify: There are WAY MORE than 2 train companies in Japan, even within the JR system (similar to National Rail), not to mention the private companies. What I think Connor is trying to say is that the Shinkansen (high speed rail) system is divided into two systems, separated at Tokyo station: the JR East/Hokkaido system to Northeastern Japan, Hokkaido and Hokuriku, and the JR Central/West/Kyushu system to Nagoya, Osaka, Hiroshima and Kyushu. They have separate toll gates and train sets, with different electric systems due to separate electric frequency between east and west Japan (50Hz vs 60Hz AC)
26:31 Hearing Connor hate the current Japanese sleeper trains (Sunrise Izumo/Seto) actually makes me kind of sad, since Japan used to have a pretty great selection of sleeper trains, including the 'Twilight Express' from Osaka to Sapporo and the 'Cassiopeia' from Ueno (Tokyo) to Sapporo, with steak dinner, nice beds and good service, along with the cheaper 'Blue Trains'. The vast majority have since been retired, and now the only way to experience high quality sleeper trains is to splurge for the tourist oriented 'cruise trains', such as the JR Kyushu 'Seven Stars in Kyushu', the JR East 'Shiki-Shima' or the JR West 'West Express Ginga Premier' and 'Twilight Express Mizukaze', all of which are bloody expensive and notoriously difficult to book. I do hope Japan does revive a more affordable yet good sleeper train service to more destinations, that is easy to book and satisfies more people, like how the Austrian OBB does with its Nightjet service in Europe.
For more information in travelling in Japan, I recommend checking out the channels Kuga's Travel and Solo Solo Travel. Also do visit the Japanese railway museums in Omiya, Nagoya, Kyoto and Kitakyushu, they are excellent!

The Japanese business script is so real. Last visit, I ended up with food poisoning and felt it coming on. The room at the hotel we transitioned to, had a check-in time of 3p.
I asked the staff if the room was ready, around noon. They said, "Yes, it's already cleaned and prepared."
I can feel my stomach turning, so I ask them if I can check in sooner due to not feeling well.
The entire front of house staff just stared at me like I had pulled out a weapon. They panicked and kept trying to see if they could contact regional management for advice.
Eventually I had to excuse myself and spent the rest of the afternoon in the lobby bathroom unable to leave or move until my room was ready. 🥴 The staff must have understood the severity once I came out hours later to be walked upstairs... and so they sent me a gift basket with stomach medicine and hot towels.

Soul is fantastic and got hampered the most cause of COVID. I'm also a big fan of Luca and elemental, as well as thinking onwards and turning red are good additions (i know people who really like turning red, even though i wasn't big on it). But it is true that ever since toy story 3, Pixar has been more hampered and released some real stinkers, however they've also released some of their best with Coco, Soul and inside out.
I've also heard great things about inside out 2, so Pixar do make great stuff it's just rarer now unfortunately and their standards have been lowered, especially with sequels being pumped out

What I think Garnt was trying to express in response to Connor asking him "why does the number of infinite scare you", is that humans have managed to invent an idea that is impossible for us to ever accurately measure/grasp/visually represent. There is now an abstract concept that will forever be beyond our ability to control, and we as a species instinctually try to control everything we encounter. It becomes terrifying when you think "what if this concept is actually true and not just some thought experiment, what if there is something in the universe that this idea actually applies to."

Because at the end of the day that's the real issue. For Garnt and everyone else that's part of their job so it can't be helped, but personally I never see annoying crap like that because I talk to my friends about the newest chapter and maybe look up a discussion post, so its funny to hear complaints about fandoms "ruining" the enjoyment of the content itself

That was the moment when I realized if you go back far enough every group of humans were victims at one point and oppressors at another. Anyone who tells you different is suffering from recency bias.

There actually is a (very well-known) horror movie about infinity-- kind of.
Apparently, when the author of Bird Box (yes, the book that spawned the Netflix movie) was creating the "bird box monster," he was inspired by the concept of infinity. I think he said he'd heard somewhere that if a human were to hypothetically truly comprehend infinity, they would go insane, and that inspired the monster. I'm sure the idea evolved when the book was being written, and even more when the movie was being made, but it did stem from the concept of infinity. Just thought someone might enjoy this knowledge lol

Turning Red was divisive, practically 50% of people liked it and the other 50% didn't. The Incredibles 2 is decent but extremely unremarkable compared to the first one. Coco is good, that's why they used it as a divisor between 'the good era' and 'the rest'. Soul was also really good but strangely forgettable, everyone kept talking about it for like a week and then forgot rather quickly (which happens with a lot of stuff nowadays, but that's also kinda the point of the discussion).

Agree a lot with what was said above. Coco might be the last time a Pixar film blew me away, and felt like a throwback to the Pixar I grew up on; Incredibles 2 doesn't hold a candle to the first film, and is generally just completely unremarkable, making comparisons very unfair; Soul was enjoyable, but yeah, completely forgettable. After everything Garnt said about infinity, the fact that we figured to just casually calculate the limit of a variable tending to INFINITY in calculus is just mind-bogling.

    On the whisky bar.
If you add maybe 3 drops of water to some whisky, the whisky will taste different. So in a whisky bar they will give you a small glass of water so you could experience the whisky you ordered.
How this works is by adding water to whisky with a lot of oil, you will change the solubility of the whisky changing how you’re tasting the whisky.

what fascinates me about infinity is how useful it ends up being in everyday life without us even knowing, despite how mind-bogling the concept is after you put some thought into it.

One of my favourite documentaries is Peter Jackson's "They Shall Not Grow Old". It's a collection of remastered WW1 recordings of just life on the frontlines and over them recordings of survivors are playing. There's stuff described there that has never been remade in a film, like how they went to the toilet or how they wasted a ton of ammo just shooting rats because there were so many it was hard to walk (on top of the knee/waist-high mud and bodies), or how they had fun playing cards or having sports games.
There's no narrator or story, it just starts with a clip slowly being colorised and a guy starts speaking, and then there's an hour and 40 minutes of that until the end.
Probably the most unbiased documentary I've ever seen, it's literally told from firsthand accounts

It's not that they dont like Ghubli it's just the fact of who that take came from. Garnt and Joey are massive One Piece fans, and all 3 of them also watch a lot of boring and/or cutesy shit and watch a lot of kids' shows, but Ghibli for whatever reason doesnt work for them?

About those emergency services like the Ambulance, Fire truck, and police, they have to slow down at a traffic light, because too often there will be a car accident at the traffic lights. 😕

  • @nicjansen230
    @nicjansen230 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

00:43:42 The thing about ambulances: they don't want something bad to happen on the way. Idk about other countries, but ambulances have specific standards in the Netherlands:
    - The max speed is the traffic speed +40 km/h (25 mph)
    - The max speed at a red traffic light is 20 km/h (13 mph)
    - None of the above rules are to be broken even if you have a CPR situation waiting for you and seconds are ticking by
    - Drive smoothly if you have a patient with you to prevent their situation to get worse
    - Choose a free lane or wait for the traffic to find a way
    - Command space from the opposite lane to pass traffic if it is safe to do so
    (Note: only speculation below)
Ambulances must be even more strict in Japan, right?
I imagine they can drive faster through a red light in the USA, as junctions are generally more open and thus have better visibility. Also, it may be better to put ambulance personnel more at risk as the risk of being too late is higher due to a longer average distance to the nearest hospital

Physical immersion is a different beast. I went to horror escape room recently, it was styled as catacombs, we started blindfolded, GM walked as through small corridors for like 5 minutes, handcuffed us to a wall and left us after monologing the intro story, generally: lots of crawling around in small spaces, sceletons, timed puzzles, I had to close myself in a space that was like 50x50cm and cut my way back in order to see a clue, and of course we were chased by a 'murderer' with an axe that did sparks when he hit the ground. It was bloody terrifying, and it's regarded as easy and not that scary. There are ones that go way way further and hit harder. And like, we were safe, handcuffs were plastic, there were big red stop buttons in every room and hidden cameras/intercoms so you could ask for help with riddles and shit, but I don't know if I would ever do it again. When you're playing a game you can just close it, or just turn around in your chair and bam, immersion broken. Without that barrier it really hits different. Also, people can be assholes, when we were chatting about other escape rooms he said he went to one with his friends, one of them was very easily scared so they asked not to scare her and the actor decided to ignore it and go extra hard on her. Nothing bad happened to her, but jesus, that would give me PTSD.
