He was blinded by the perfect score rating he has and his understanding of what is good for the case that he forgot his actual duty.

      @berserkasaurusrex4233 4 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      @@MuffinMcFluffin Well, they certainly don't establish that very well in the film, if it's the case. It looks like a whole wing explodes in fire and the lawyer just walks away. I mean, did he check to see if the other cells were empty first? Hell, the door is blown off the Clyde's door from the force of the explosion. Did Nick even check on his friend who was locking the hidden escape door? The last we see, Colm Meaney is still running away underground, and Nick is maybe 100 feet away from the cell when the bomb goes off, despite running the way. Colm couldn't have gotten out in time. He was probably buried alive when that tunnel collapsed from the explosion. And Nick is just watching a dumb recital while Chief O'Brien suffocates due to his thoughtlessness.

    • @MuffinMcFluffin
      @MuffinMcFluffin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@berserkasaurusrex4233 Haha I think it's safe to say his partner was safe from harm as well. Sometimes you have to sacrifice bits to make a movie moment more impacting. In F. Gary Gray's case, that was getting a slow-motion shot of Jamie Foxx walking away as there is an explosion in that wing.
      And yeah, they likely scouted out solitary or had record of anybody else being in there. Heck, even Clyde probably scouted it out beforehand. How do you think he was able to build a tunnel without anyone else being aware, as well as work in and out of there, if there were other nearby individuals?
      I see what you're trying to get at, but it seems more like you're calling something a plot hole by force rather than being a little more presumptuous of the circumstance.

    • @berserkasaurusrex4233
      @berserkasaurusrex4233 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@MuffinMcFluffin Well, I didn't call it a plothole, but it effectively is now that you mention it. There is zero indication in the film that the other cells are empty or that Nick even considered checking. Your assuming that characters must've checked ahead of time, when there is not even a throwaway line of dialogue about this, is just trying to mentally excuse a badly thought out scene. Most likely the writers didn't even consider that the other cells were likely occupied, making Nick a murderer.
      (Which he is, anyway, since he clearly killed Clyde. Having Clyde detonate the bomb doesn't make Nick less of a killer, since he put the murder weapon in the cell himself.)
      The film makes it clear that Clyde built the tunnel long before he killed his family's murderers; he didn't build it from inside the cell. He didn't know which cell he'd end up in, so built a secret entrance into each cell, presumably waiting until each particular solitary cell was empty, likely over a period of months. Then he just opened the door once he was sent to solitary after he killed his cellmate.
      As to the survival odds of poor Chief O'Brien, Nick says the bomb will go off in about 20 seconds, then takes off running. We never see the detective leave the tunnel, the last shot with him is him also running, still deep in the tunnel system. At any rate, Nick had no way to know he wasn't killing the detective. What if O'Brien had tripped and broke his leg after locking the secret door to the cell?
      I think Nick is just a thoughtless dickhead, frankly. Thankfully Clyde didn't tell him about the second bomb in the cello.

  • @NoPantsBaby

    So let me get this straight. Dude hard hacked into the security feed of the prison.... but he didn't install a motion detector in the tunnel? Not even a camera watching the property? Personally, I would've like an ending where we learn Clyde really did have an accomplice. Nick leaves Clyde in the cell with the bomb. Nick proceeds to dismantle his own bomb and makes another phone call like, "Plan B. Get me outta here."
    Nick and several prison guards return to find the cell empty and the tunnel reopened. Nick is intercepted at home or on the highway by Clyde. Nick drops some of his moralizing talk, but Clyde's like, "This one isn't about me."
    Ames enters the scene, alive and well despite his seemingly graphic execution. Clyde remarks that the right chemicals made him look dead and the coroner had been paid off to expedite the disposal process. "You refused to give me justice, Nick, but you did so much worse to him."
    Ames proceeds to confront Nick with his sins. That he set Ames up to be executed despite Clyde telling him Darby was the killer. That Nick cared more about his conviction rate than the truth. Nick goes to make excuses and Ames puts a bullet in his head mid-sentence.
    Clyde slaps him on the shoulder and they leave the scene. The credits roll with audio of the news covering Nick's confession and proof of the staggering corruption within the local legal circuit.
    NOTE: Yeah, Clyde wanted all the revenge, but Ames was just some dumb punk wanted to steal stuff. The system screwed Ames just as hard as Clyde.

That girl and his boss understood the error of their ways and they were still killed, it was Nick who was being stubborn until the very end. But none of this would’ve happened if it weren’t for him. Would have been poetic justice did the right thing but because its outside of the law hes punished too. Did he think that Foxx just left the bomb at City Hall on the hopes that he could talk Clyde down? Dumb.

    They had to make the ending a victory for the system or it would never have made it to the box office. Can't have movies where the vigilante doesn't lose in the end. Boondock saints ended up in prison. V for Vendetta died. The ending of this movie being what it was kinda proves the point of system corruption that the movie reveals throughout.

And that Clyde was watching Nick and knew Nick put the bomb in his cell. When he pushed the send button on the phone, Clyde should have said, ''You need to leave now Nick, because now Its my time to die. You'll make a good DA now.'

    Here is how I would have fixed the ending:
    1. In the city government meeting, the Mayor plays up the fact that she doesn't care about breaking the law and violating the Constitutional rights of any citizen to protect her administration. The Police Commissioner and other city heads should affirm her stance.
    2. Instead of planting a bomb to kill the city government, Clyde instead plans to record the meeting and transmit it over the internet when he presses the button (this is not revealed until later).
    3. Nick does not know about the transmission and instead is convinced Nick has planted a bomb, a bomb he cannot find.
    4. Nick confronts Clyde in the cell and threatens to kill him if Clyde won't tell Nick where the bomb is.
    5. Clyde proposes they make a deal and Nick refuses, saying "I don't make deals with murderers." (Nick's character arc comes full circle. Clyde now knows he has finally gotten through to Nick)
    6. Clyde pulls out the cell phone and presses the button before Nick can stop him, Nick shoots Clyde. (Clyde's character arc is completed)(Yes, Clyde should die in the end because he IS a murderer and justice must be done; this should be the conclusion to Clyde's plan all along.)
    7. Cut to six months later. The entire city government has been removed or resigned in disgrace. Nick is the new City Attorney.

      I don't completely agree with your breakdown of how the movie should have went. Most of it is good.
      But Clyde shouldn't have to die. Nick made him a killer, this is all Nick's fault.
      Let Clyde shoot Nick, wounding, but realizing he has been no better than a criminal. After he finds out the truth of Clyde recording the meeting, he realizes he's not worthy of the work he does. He resigns and leaves, possibly for another state and a simple life.

      @Alex Yelle that is just a rumor. Jamie had no power as it was Gerard who was the producer. All that simply happened is Butler liked the Clyde character more so they switched roles nothing more.

    • @BigMac8000
      @BigMac8000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@charlesdoyle3630 I second this, Butler thought his own character was "monstrous" despite playing him excellently, with the fervor and gusto of someone truly died-in-the-wool fanatical. I think they struggled with the ending not because of individual issues, but because ending this movie is quite difficult when its first two acts are impeccable.
      They frankly just needed 30 minutes more run time.
      Jamie Fox's righteous indignation here isn't represented well enough, there's a few deleted scenes that show his perspective more, and while I'm actually "ok" with the ending it could've been so much more, instead, it ends long before it feels resolved.
      Placing the bomb in Clyde's cell represents a breach of crazy amount of legality, and danger to himself and others transporting it. They could've made this much simpler by having Jamie Fox's character find the tunnel earlier, and in a panic to avoid a violent confrontation, he switches a test device with the real one BEFORE Clyde plants it. Then the explosion itself comes from the tunnel, where he might've kept the bomb closer to "tinker" with it.
      I don't disagree with the ending, it's just the rest of the movie is so eloquently thought out but the ending is not.
      They also had a much better narrative about the state of the justice system, and "punishment" as a model for justice they could've focused on. I think that's what really is "off" about the movie. Everyone loves Clyde's narrative paradigm, but Jamie Foxx's character should've represented an opposing ideology with redeeming qualities. Giving him more intellectual victories instead of seething negativity would've gone a long way to make him sympathetic, and the natural counterpart to Clyde.
      Meanwhile Clyde's amount of screentime presents him as the main character, which puts Jamie Foxx in a supporting role. I'm not going to say they should've cut a minute of clyde's time, but they should've let this movie's length increase and develop his character, and his ideology, with the same care they put into Clyde's. Showing Nick's capability to work WITHIN the system, instead of dragging him into Clyde's game.
      Essentially the ending here paints Clyde as being right, as Nick uses the same tools of murder Clyde did to enact his own personal brand of justice, instead of Nick showing a greater side.
      I can barely even remember "Nicks" name, and his generic story, he comes off as a supporting character, which makes the ending disjointed.
      Alternatively some of the other supporting characters could've been played up, and had the narrative about Justice being about the collaborative nature of society at large - that "truth" comes forward through collaboration with others, and that Clyde's solitude was his true weakness.
      Another detail that's off is that Nick does not fight hard for Clyde's life.
      If Nick instead took the tact that he'd have to kill Clyde before he hit the switch, as a lawman would have to do legally, it would've been Nick arguing more fervently for Clyde's life. Going as far as shooting Clyde to try and stop him from using the detonator would've made Nick more sympathetic, as while Clyde is a murderer and is likely to get the chair, he should work within the justice system to actually defeat Clyde, showing its merits - in this case possibly saving Clyde from himself.
      Instead, Nick risks a huge explosion and uses Clyde's methods, which is ideologically bankrupt in another wise excellent screenplay.
      Still, if you just imagine a few scenes relieving the narrative of the bombs transport and ethical puzzle, and then change Jamie Fox's tact slightly to be more sympathetic, as the justice system naturally is, it'd fix the whole movie.
      It's just "incomplete".

      @@BigMac8000 many directors and producers dont understand the importance of the conceptual battle taking place along with the actual battle. This is what makes people love anime. whether its goku fighting freeza or naruto fighting pain. these arnt simply two people punching each other. these are developed characters coming into conflict due to their ideologies along with their circumstance. The thing that makes it so engaging however is the understanding we have of these ideologies and how we not only sympathize but also empathize with them. We cheer on naruto for his optimism and his love for his family and home. He wants to create a better world. One with peace. however we also have sympathy and even empathize with pain. "Do you understand Pain a little now? If you don’t share someone’s pain you can never understand them." Pain points out we cant empathize unless we have shared pain. How can i understand your struggle if i have not struggled? Pain also wants to create a better world. One with peace. The place they differ is their methodology. While we may disagree with pains methodology we understand his ideology and we agree with portions of it. The problem is there isnt much of an ideological struggle going on. The entire force is behind butlers character. Foxs character doesnt learn much. Didnt start from a point of a conflicting ideology. He even tells butler he almost supports what he did to the murderer. Which is even demonstrated later when he murders butlers character. This would be like if naruto agreed with pain but just didnt like it was happening to him which is just a fisticuff match with no real ideological stakes. i could go on but this is pretty long lol.

    This ending is a whole lot better than the original because it's realistic as smart as this guy was and then he goes back to the prison after his last set up now it don't make no sense, but this ending makes way better since than the one they went with I'm just saying he's too smart to go back to the prison and then get blowed up by his own bomb come on now y'all this was all Hollywood and he worked military too and he was special ops he ain't going to go out like that IJS

    This is the one thing that so pissed me off about the ending. He is supposed to be one of the smartest think tank brains, but he wouldn't have any kind of failsafe or trips. nothing when it came to his cell, the bomb especially, or his little den. Give me a break. Would have been a great movie if the ending wasn't so lame.

    Much better ending than the original. Thanks for sharing. However, the perfect after credit ending would have been if Clyde did the same thing to Nick as he did to Darby!

    I think there was an original ending that would've been similar to this, but when the studio double checked it or test screened it, they got worried too many people would side with Clyde. Thus, we have the crappy ending we have today. Still loved the movie despite the ending, this one is canon, thank you OP.

    The ending of the original movie was dumb. Clyde made that bomb. He could simply open up the briefcase and disable it. He was the guy who made it and knew it inside and out.

    The reason the ending was wrong is Because the black actor didn't want the "bad guy to win" not understanding that the black lawyer was the bad guy.

    this is how the movie should have ended. adding to this would be and nick's (saved best for last) family gets killed so he can feel what clyde feels and then one on one combat nick dies brutally.

  • @MikeTooleK9S

    Clyde wins when he forces Nick to dirty his hands beyond his conception of "justice". Now everything Nick does is a part of Clyde. The real movie is twisted enough as it is. Pales in comparison to bLoWiNg Up a bUiLdInG. Thats just destruction. Nick is an agent of Clydes Gift.

    • @ChakatStripedfur
      @ChakatStripedfur 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually no, Nick will go on believing that he's doing the right thing, that the system that he works for isn't broken. He will never understand what Clyde went through, because he will never allow himself to. All he'll see is that Clyde is the 'bad guy' who did bad things, he won't see that he did anything wrong at all. You can plainly see that in the scene where Nick repeatedly punches Clyde outside the prison gates. Clyde is trying to get him to see what's going on, but Nick is blinded by his own ignorance. Same as with the interrogation scene, where he says "If you ever lay a _finger_ on my family!". It's all about him, and that's the way it's always been. He's completely fine with Clyde getting royally fucked over, as well as letting a turd in human clothing go free and sentencing the other guy (who was just 'there' and didn't participate in any of the travesties) to die by lethal injection, just to protect his conviction record.
      Like Clyde said, Nick should've brought it to trial. And after the judge threw out all that evidence Nick should've tried to get it heard in another court, stating that the judge unfairly threw out valuable evidence. Clyde's point was that Nick should've tried _something,_ instead of making a deal. And at the end, Nick never learned his lesson. Sure he said "I don't work with murderers anymore, you taught me that.", but he just said that to stick it to Clyde. You can bet your ass that Nick will make a deal with a rapist/murderer/child molester in a hot second if it saves his conviction rate. And if anything similar happens to his family, he'd be the first one to cry to the justice system to save him, and if they didn't he'd be all "This system is broken!!", completely ignoring the irony.

    There should honestly have been a 2nd bomb in City Hall, wherein even though Clyde dies, he still wins somehow because he knows Nick slipped up and missed something, which will haunt Nick's dreams forever.

    I think i read somewhere Jamie Foxx said hed do the film only if his character came out the winner.
    Its like they tried to make a film of 'good triumphs over evil' without realising most people would side with the man wronged by the justice system.

    If this story were a real one, Clyde would have definitely completed his mission successfully. No way a prosecutor would have outsmarted a highly trained tactician. Remember he killed that one guy by inventing a kevlar thread with a hightech ratchet made of carbon fibre and inserted it into bro's tie! Lol.. No way kinetic operations recon mercenary fumbles the ball at the end.
