    Gremlins weren't bad. They were inexpensive. We need inexpensive cars. How can a poor person afford the repairs on today's computerized, hybrid or electric cars?

    On the DeLorean:
    “The V6 engine produced just 130hp, about 1/3 of the amount necessary to deliver any kind of performance that could be considered serious.”
    This statement is beyond inaccurate. The average sports car in 1981 had between 120-170hp, mostly due to emission regulations and fuel economy. Very few production cars in this era had 390hp as you claim is needed to be “considered serious”. 😂

    • @jesper1501
      @jesper1501 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also the non catalytic version actually had the intended 170 hp.
      Some car magazines actually tested this version in Nothern Ireland and was quite impressed, as it lived up to all it’s rivals performance wise.

    • @16rumpole
      @16rumpole 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree, that 1/3 comment was ridiculous. Very few cars in the 80s even had 260 hp.

      I love how inaccurate all of this is on the DeLorean. What's funny is that a Chevrolet Corvette in 1981 was a 190 horsepower and only went 1.4 seconds faster 0-60. I daily drive a 1982 DeLorean Spec-1

      Most of these videos when they claim that a car is “underpowered” is asinine to say the least, obviously they are not old enough to remember what most cars were like in the old days. I can remember V-8 cars that were only 145 hp, a lot of cars had 0-60 times in the 15-20 second range. People were buying cars because of MPG back in the 1970s during the energy crisis out of necessity and besides that the speed limit was only 55 MPH anyway.

    In ‘88 I bought my first brand new car. An ‘88 VW Fox 4 door. The first time it ever saw a mechanic was when I hit 475,000 miles when it got the timing belt changed out. All I ever did was regular maintenance and oil changes and it rain flawlessly. Better shocks/struts helped the handling, which wasn’t even bad to begin with.
    That car now has over 1,000,000 miles on it on the original engine. Still runs good and looks good. One of my grandsons drives it every day.

    You didn't really say why the Gremlin was bad. Had a base 232 i6 then a 258 i6 which is also used in Jeep products from Amc . They were durable engines then the 5.0 304 V8 optional in a Gremlin X was not only fast but the X version looked great too. Top of the heap 401 V8 Randle Gremlin X would destroy most modern day cars easily. So not sure what makes it bad.

      I absolutely loved my Gremlin. If I had to fault something it would be inadequate front suspension, it would bottom out pretty easily. The best thing I accidently discovered about the car was it's acoustics. With speakers mounted in the metal boxes in the rear floor on either side of the spare tire hatch, the acoustics were absolutely perfect. No car I have owned since has come close to equaling it.

Had two versions, the notchback that looked like the Gremlin but with a bigger window behind the front doors and a hatchback model that looked much better. The second also had a "sporty" model, the AMX package that could get a V8 and four wheel drive (when it was rebadged again as an Eagle).

    I had the Chevy Citation, used, 77000 miles. Took it back to the chevy dealership i bought it from. Trick was, start it up, shut it off, start it up, shut it off start it up the 3rd time shut it off it wouldn't start up a 4th time. The service guys had to push it into the maintenence shop. They hadn't believed me before, but they fixed the MF that time. Gave it to my uncle when I bought a brand new Buick Century as payback for the crap Ford Grenada his mom/my grandmother insisted he sell to me.

    How about a video now covering the *best-built* /top-quality/most reliable vehicles available in the U.S. from roughly 1980 thru 2020 or thereabouts? Or would selecting the vehicles be too subjective, i.e. more a matter of opinion? (Although I imagine vehicles like the Toyota Camry & Corolla and Honda Accord & Civic would certainly be among the first included. Can't really say off the top of my head which U.S. manufacturers' models would be.)

      Yes, it was based on the Dodge Mirada and Chrysler Cordova platform. I'm going to step on your parade though, the M-body Diplomat, Grand Fury, 5th Ave, LeBaron and J-body Mirada, Cordova and Imperial were all nothing more than gussied up F-bodies or Aspen and Volare's. The problem with the Aspen, Volare was they were rushed into production by Lee Iococca before they were ready. First couple of years were junk. By 1978 they were decent cars for the Era but the damage was done. The M and J body cars were better, except for the poorly executed and overpriced Imperial. But, they tried, I'll give them credit for that.
      Oh, and Plymouth Gold Dusters didn't have a V6. A slant 6, yes and a couple of different V8 engines. The slant 6 was ruined by the attempt to clean up emissions. Too many add on devices, Carburetors leaned out too fat and compression rates lowered too far. Another victim of the times and Chryslers poor financial situation. It took the much maligned K-Car to reverse Chrysler's misfortunes. Another platform that spawned a whole plethora of different vehicles.

    If you list the Cadillac Allante as a failure, then you must also include the equally awful Chrysler TC by Maserati. The Chrysler TC by Maserati was a vanity project of Lee Iacocca that lost Chrysler Corp hundreds of millions of dollars in the early 1990s. Many early 1980s Imperials were converted from fuel injection to more reliable carburetion. The luxury buying public in the early 1980s was more interested in smaller luxury 4-Door sedans than big coupes as in the 1970s. The Chrysler Laser/Dodge Daytona was a good looking car inspired by the Porsche 928. The 1990 to 1993 Imperial was another turkey of an American car as was the 1988 to 1992 Eagle Premier

      You are correct the The 1981-83 Imperial coupes had potential and. Good looks but were expensive and terrible cars The fuel injection and the electronics were bad quality ,the 318 V8 was woefully underpowered, and luxury inefficient and the Interior exterior quality was sadly inadequate for it's pricey intent.
      The 1990-92 Imperial sedan models were crappy FWD - extended wheelbase throw away K-car derived fluffy versions of the Dodge Dynasty, CHRYSLER NEW YORKER , Plymouth Caravile models . They all had essentially 3.3 OHV l V6 minivan engines, Fake wood, vinyl tops, fake Wood Grain and lots of crutch velvet fluff including many of the mechanical problems that minivans with that engine and era had All for the" affordable" price of $35k back in the early 90's ; cheaper than a Cadillac Fleetwood or Lincoln Town Car BUT EXPENSIVE for a dolled up K-Car that cast $70 K ( New... @@rodferguson3515 Yes, the styling of the Imperial coupes was great...especially the front end and the interior seating. But the fuel injection was problematic though by the late 1980s fuel injection was the norm in the auto industry. I still have the 1981, 1982, and 1983 Imperial brochures that I requested at that time. The 1990 Imperial was introduced at the same time as the legendary Lexus LS400. Mercedes-Benz cars at that time had impeccable build quality. But American luxury cars were falling way behind. Bob Lutz hated the early 1990s Imperial but he has stated publicly that Lee Iacocca who was his boss at the time absolutely loved it. Also Iacocca was vice president of Ford during that time and Henry Ford II was ran it and Ford was particularly notorious for his conservative out of step design proposals of malaise-ish styling at Ford during that time Which by the Early 1980's almost bankrupt Ford Until Ford II left .So it not hard to figure out where Lee Iacocca got his mindset from.

The suicide door Continentals, Mark III, IV, V and 1960s Thunderbirds had bold styling but incredible build quality because Henry Ford II knew that was required to be competitive with General Motors.
