Mr. Bazalgette, I've recently taken up Golf. I was a professional surfer for 3 years and a professional Muay Thai fighter on and off for over 10. Golf is by far the most challenging. This made an immediate difference in my putting - just started playing, I stood quite tall, and most of my shots were curling wide, were overpowered or just were flat inaccurate. I got lower with a slight crimp and kept a straight back, stopped using my hips as much. The ball was hitting near the mark much more consistently. If not sinking the put, then getting much closer and with much less work to do on the second attempt.

Many thanks, I've been looking for "how to putt a golf ball better" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Graysonyon Putter Prolific - (search on google ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my friend got excellent results with it.

Hello Adam, in term of some muscle tension on the back ( lower or higher), is there any correlation with flat/ straight or round spine? I feel like with flat spine (a litle bit S looks) tension on the back is less and the putter is lighter? Does that really happend?
Hello Adam, would you suggest more details on 1/ shoulder movement (up down in a line parallel with the target line or in a circle), 2/ max safe distance putten should go back for long putting distance, say 20-30-40 yards and your formula 1:1 or 1:2, given flat good green and speed constant, and 3/ eye movement for controlling a straight back and forward swing path . Thanks for question. Shoulders should pivot perpendicular to trunk, so it depends how bent over you are. I'd always stay on 2-1 (pendulum) rhythm, so putter should go back as far as it needs to for the putt you have. Nathan, I think it's one of those things that is personal. Jordan Spieth does it on short putts, and obviously it works great for him (ball doesn't know where you are looking). If it's helping you keep doing it.
More good tips. Thank you. Can you please advise on ball position in stance and tension on grip please? I took a tip off TH-cam to place the ball slightly forward in stance so that the putter head slightly strikes the ball on an upward to give a better roll. Now because my set up is more with my arms hanging down rather than slightly folded as you suggest, this is making me grip the putter very tight to stop missing to the left. I hope this makes sense Adam. At the moment I am so tense over 2 and 3 footers. So ball position and grip please Adam. Thank you.
John, I'm of the belief that there is no ONE RIGHT ball position. Ball position affects your optics, and therefore alignment. Try for the ball position that allows you to line up best. Again, not sure there is an exact correct amount of grip pressure. You want feel, but also a sense of control. Hope this helps. Best, Adam
Scratch Golf Academy Adam, Thanks for the reply. I tried bending over more which made me have to bring the putter closer to me. Tried to just copy your setup basically. This was awesome!!! 4 birdies this week with much, much better distance control. Thank you so much!!!
Certainly. Standing a little taller allows more freedom to make a bigger stroke, and touch is more important than precise line on long putts. Best, Adam
Thanks a lot for your good and useful lessons !! Andrew, I’m sort of in between. I think the putter definitely arcs, but on short putts less than the average player does. Also, the taller you stand at address the more arc you will have, the more bent over the less, so posture affects it too. All the best, Adam
Scratch Golf Academy Thanks Adam, I really appreciate your reply. Ive putted square to square since I was 10, but Stan Utley convinced me to revaluate all of the Pelz work I read and practiced for decades. Its a work in progress but I feel I can roll the ball better with shoulder and forearm rotation. BTW, I think your delivery and methods are absolutely brilliant, better than anyone. Thanks for the videos and please keep posting them! All best
What I have noticed Adam, as I have watched a great number of videos in the last 3 to 4 years when I got back to golf after a 10 year hiatus, is there are a few instructors that have the knack of seemingly speaking directly to the viewers game and it is clear you are the best at doing it. When I stopped playing at age 65 I was a not to shabby 9 Hdcp, and at age 77 I can still swing it and score in the mid to upper 70s. Granted, my group plays the OLD MAN TEES, but hell, we ALL earned it.
Gary, There are a lot of them out there, many of them good, but it depends on the aid and the tendencies of the player. I'm not a big fan of putting aids that encourage you to over manage and manipulate the club. Sorry this isn't a better answer. If it's of interest to you, at my website www.scratchgolfacademy.com in the premium part there is a whole course on putting. It includes teaching aids, and the use of everyday things to help with practice at the course, and at home. Also all my thoughts on building blocks of an easy to repeat stroke, reading greens and grain etc. Either way, I hope your putting improves. Best, Adam
Good Morning, I am writing a book targeting Golfers who are trying to improve their scores to 90. I would like to include the link to this video in the book. To whom may I make the request? Thank you
Adam what's your thought on using a line on the ball? 66 year old, 4 cap but don't sink my share of 6-12 footers, I've begun to experiment with a line in the last month, although my eye doesn't line up with what the line tells me. Cheers from Canada
Generally if the ball is too far forward in your stance you’ll aim the putter left and think it’s straight, Vice versa if it’s too far back. Experiment into the line looks good to you. Hope this helps
I am just getting back into golf after a long hiatus. All of my clubs are still in good condition, but my putter is a bit outdated. How important is updating my putter versus simply getting used to it again?
Hard to say without seeing it Scott. We use the putter a lot, so it's worth having a good one. Try to get with someone that can help you select the appropriate length for you, and the best weight for that length. Thanks, Adam
I'm 6' 5" and wanna improve on my putting. I was fitted for a 36" putter. Is that the correct length? Already scratch golfer but wanted be better. I tend to hit the ball with my right hand and creates inconsistencies. Any drills I can work on? Btw I putt cross handed
Okay, I like the crimp, and I like the head swivel. I am a high scorer because of my putting. I usually have 3 to 4 putts on each hole. When I practice putting, I don't get better. I get on the green ready to putt for birdies and end up with 6 or 7. I'm 5'6" 160# 76yrs and hit my 7 iron 145, 4- 180, 5 wood 230, driver 250+....been playing golf since 1952. I've never been a good putter. My goal is to shoot my age, but will I be able to shoot 100, when I'm 100?
Sorry it's been such a struggle for you Bart. I'd guess if you can improve your diistance control that would be the quickest way to see improvement. Best of luck, Adam
Hi Bart, I read your bit where you say your a bad putter, and there you have your problem, I was the same until I found the key, the key is to start telling yourself that your a good putter if you miss don't worry tell yourself your make the next one it will take some time but it will come don't tell anyone that your a bad putter only say and think positive thought's I now think I can make every putt if I don't I will forget it and tell myself I will get the next one believe in yourself. Good Luck George.
Well, I think they are beautifully crafted putters. Milled, with great styling. They also now have a nice name brand associated with quality, like Mercedes. Best, Adam
It’s the way Scotty Cameron’s are weighted. I just tried several high end putters versus cheap and the feel of the weight of the SC is very natural and smooth.
I've putted every style for thirty years i was good but never satisfied then one day I took Nicklaus style to heart I miss alot less and putting is fun again .hint it's all in the weight timing in the hands you can tweak it for a slight pull or push .fractions here there . putting takes a doctor degree to be really good . Hint put your whole body in the exact some place every time that's why Jack was so good he was locked in that. Right elbow is touching his leg just barely like a rail .
Putting is SO INDIVIDUAL, I don't know how anyone can say "you should do this or that". Having played this game for 63 years, my take is that putting is about 90% mental and 10% physical. I've seen some of the worst putting fundamentals on the planet but yet those same golfers make it from anywhere on the green and vice versa. Ray Floyd, Isao Aoki, Bobby Locke and countless others did it their own way with great success. I truly believe that success came from their brain and their confidence, not their physical stroke. But, maybe I'm wrong?
Mr. Bazelgette, my daughter is 5'2 using a 36 inch putter. Seems as though i've thought she stands too upright... What would you recommend for a girl that size? Thank you
Not sure why you hit your straight putt 3” left of your target line and left it short and high ? Isnt long and low better as a miss ? 😊 Just messing with ya , i cant putt for toffee
Joyce, As an estimate I'd say 31 inches would be a good putter length for you. Just make sure it has a heavy head (maybe adjustable weights) as cutting a standard putter well down makes if feel a lot lighter. Best, Adam
If you want to prove something to yourself, build yourself a wooden putter with a wooden offset blade and about a 1 inch square shaft. Now use a stair step which is one step above what would be the green as a support for that square shaft as you stroke. This would represent the single tilted plane the putter is supposed to ride UNROTATED on. What you will observe during the stroke may be shocking to you. Almost like an optical illusion. The putter blade will both open and close (relative to the target) and it will arc even though it is "LOCKED" (by the square shaft) on to a single flat tilted plane. Then know that the people who make "the PUTTING ARC" actually sell a separate clip on device to illustrate the same exact thing. It clips onto the putter shaft to make a flat surface to ride on. If you watch Tiger Woods videos very closely you will see that this it the exact path and method he uses. He arcs to the inside and the blade opens and closes relative to the target. But the arms, hands. and shoulders NEVER ROTATE. Crazy ? No ! It happens because the shaft cannot and does not get longer as it rides up that tilted plane which comes to the inside.. This is what touring pros understand and almost NO amateurs do. It is why they can make a living playing golf. This so-called optical illusion is very difficult for the average person to understand. It is why most people cannot even get the ball started on line. And it proves that height of the blade at impact affects blade angle at impact. Pro's don't lift to get good role as is commonly stated. They lift to close the blade after aiming a little to the right. It doubles the margin for error as per Michael Breed and Stan Utley. I do it and it does double the margin for error. Aim right edge and hook it in by lifting. You never miss right, and the left side error is twice as large just like Nicklaus's "bread and butter" fade on drives.
Great video with some solid ideas. Thanks! I am curious though ... you didn't talk much about address position and, more specifically, the advice that one's eyes at address should be over the ball (such that if you dropped a ball from the bridge of your nose, it would drop on the ball that you're addressing. I've putted this way for more than 40 years. Recently, a golfing buddy advised me that you should stand in a position such that your eyes agree with the line that you've taken from behind the ball. I've always struggled with pulling my puts and I'm wondering if that's because when I align myself parallel with the line taken from behind the ball, it always looks slightly right of the hole. Now I'm wondering if it would be better to take an address position where the "correct" line looks correct to me at address (which means my eyes would not necessarily be directly over the ball). Does this make any sense?
Captain Ron, I always think you want to 'feel like' you are lined up well, even if you are not. It's just hard to putt when you don't feel lined up, even if someone tells you that you are. At www.scratchgolfacademy.com I have full courses in most aspects of the game, including putting. Lots about address, line up of putter face, reading greens etc. Hope you'll check it out. Thanks, Adam
What about those of us with back hip Problems? I was hunched over my putts like he shows here, but it was just killing my lower back hip. So I went and purchased the longest legal putter I cud get. Must be at least 42 inches. Much less pressure on my back putting. Cuzco of the pain being hunched over I cud never totally concentrate on the putt. My mind was on the pain in my back. So being hunched over putting does not work for everyone.
Fair enough, sorry you have back pain. These videos are just general advice to golfers, but some people for one reason or another have to customize what works for them. Best, Adam
Looking at old film of Nicklaus, he is not only bent over, his head is already rotated to the left looking down his line. Like he is behind the ball with his eyes. Am I wrong? Why don’t the pros do that today?
Lawrence, You make an interesting point. Johnny Miller (who I think is very smart) once wrote an article on the fact that Nicklaus (one of best pressure putters ever) has an unusual style, and no one seemed to copy it. Not sure the answer? Best, Adam
Enjoyed the putting video - I lose a lot of strokes on the green - but one thing drives me bonkers. There is NO such competition as the British Open in golf. It is The Open.

I think less roundedness of the spine, less of the shoulder blades pulled forward is best.
Thanks, Adam

Hello Adam, would you suggest more details on 1/ shoulder movement (up down in a line parallel with the target line or in a circle), 2/ max safe distance putten should go back for long putting distance, say 20-30-40 yards and your formula 1:1 or 1:2, given flat good green and speed constant, and 3/ eye movement for controlling a straight back and forward swing path . Thnks in advance.
Thanks for question. Shoulders should pivot perpendicular to trunk, so it depends how bent over you are. I'd always stay on 2-1 (pendulum) rhythm, so putter should go back as far as it needs to for the putt you have. If it's way off the green at some point it's better to chip so you don't have to make a giant stroke. I don't think eye movement controls the path of putter, but you have to do what works for you.

Do you have any thoughts on looking at the hole while striking short putts?
Nathan,
I think it's one of those things that is personal. Jordan Spieth does it on short putts, and obviously it works great for him (ball doesn't know where you are looking). If it's helping you keep doing it.
This is a great video!!! Well done.
Thanks John.
All the best, Adam
Good tips....do you advocate a straight back-straight through path or a hinge door curved path?
John,
Taller posture creates more arc. I'd say it depends on posture and length of putt (longer stroke more arc).
Thanks, Adam
great tip...useful and practical...thanks.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video.
All the best, Adam
More good tips. Thank you. Can you please advise on ball position in stance and tension on grip please? I took a tip off TH-cam to place the ball slightly forward in stance so that the putter head slightly strikes the ball on an upward to give a better roll. Now because my set up is more with my arms hanging down rather than slightly folded as you suggest, this is making me grip the putter very tight to stop missing to the left. I hope this makes sense Adam. At the moment I am so tense over 2 and 3 footers. So ball position and grip please Adam. Thank you.
John,
I'm of the belief that there is no ONE RIGHT ball position. Ball position affects your optics, and therefore alignment. Try for the ball position that allows you to line up best. Again, not sure there is an exact correct amount of grip pressure. You want feel, but also a sense of control.
Hope this helps.
Best, Adam
I will try this. Curious if bending over more will help with my distance control?
Russ,
Not sure it relates directly to distance control, but try it and see.
Best, Adam
Scratch Golf Academy Adam, Thanks for the reply. I tried bending over more which made me have to bring the putter closer to me. Tried to just copy your setup basically. This was awesome!!! 4 birdies this week with much, much better distance control. Thank you so much!!!
On longer putts I seem to do better when I'm standing taller at address. Is this okay?
Certainly. Standing a little taller allows more freedom to make a bigger stroke, and touch is more important than precise line on long putts.

" Once you've hit and hold and you look, you should just swivel your head "
Thanks very much,. I'm glad you find the videos helpful!
All the best, Adam
After a putting training with the pro, I gave my putter to be shortend 5cm, so I can get easier over the ball 😊👍⛳️
Glad to hear it
Thanks Adam. Do you advocate square to square or arc putting?
Andrew,
I’m sort of in between.
All best
when are you uploading that video on analyzing Zach Johnson's swing
Lakshya,
I have it on the list, I hope to get it posted within the next 14 days. Sorry it can't be quicker.

What I have noticed Adam, as I have watched a great number of videos in the last 3 to 4 years when I got back to golf after a 10 year hiatus, is there are a few instructors that have the knack of seemingly speaking directly to
the viewers game and it is clear you are the best at doing it.
When I stopped playing at age 65
I was a not to shabby 9 Hdcp, and at age 77 I can still swing it and score in the mid to upper 70s.
Granted, my group plays the
OLD MAN TEES, but hell, we ALL earned it.
Old man tees or otherwise, that's good golf Frank! Thanks for the comment.

Should you be taking the club back and following through with your shoulders only and not moving your wrists at all. thanks
Yes, that's the general idea.

Great video..would like to learn the proper length for the putter..I would think I am 35 inch..6 foot tall.?please help
Edward,
Thanks. There's is more to it than just your height, but generally that should be a good fit for you.

Hi Adam
Do you recommend any putting training devices to help build a solid technique?
Gary,
There are a lot of them out there, many of them good, but it depends on the aid and the tendencies of the player.
Best, Adam
Thanks Adam thats just great I will pop over and have a look

This is great! Any advice on how to turn my son straight again?
Good Morning, I am writing a book targeting Golfers who are trying to improve their scores to 90. I would like to include the link to this video in the book. To whom may I make the request? Thank you
Thanks Tom, no problem.

@@Scratchgolfacademy Thanks I'll experiment with ball position. Cheers!
@@Scratchgolfacademy Thanks for the help.

I'm 6' 5" and wanna improve on my putting. I was fitted for a 36" putter. Is that the correct length? Already scratch golfer but wanted be better. I tend to hit the ball with my right hand and creates inconsistencies. Any drills I can work on? Btw I putt cross handed
Scott,
As a guess I'd say you'd need a 36 or 37 inch putter. A good putter fit helps the stroke a lot.
Best, Adam
YES !! That's great advice. I'll work on that. Thanks....
Do you have thoughts on why people love Scotty Camerons so much?
Well, I think they are beautifully crafted putters. Milled, with great styling. They also now have a nice name brand associated with quality, like Mercedes.
Best, Adam
BPhife Quality craftsmanship and branding that luckily coincided with Tiger's legend. Interestingly, the two were friends before either became famous
Thanks for the comment.

Well, there are always a mixture of reasons. Nerves, green reading, feel, mechanics, practice etc
All the best, Adam
I’ve been getting into golfing lately with all the crazy shit going on in the ghetto, this is my escape.
Hope you make good progress in the game

Mr. Bazelgette, my daughter is 5'2 using a 36 inch putter. Seems as though i've thought she stands too upright... What would you recommend for a girl that size? Thank you
I'd say more like 23 or 33 inch putter would be a better fit.

Thank you.

Have not actually?

Not sure why you hit your straight putt 3” left of your target line and left it short and high ? Isnt long and low better as a miss ? 😊
Just messing with ya , i cant putt for toffee
Ha! Keep at it mate!
Really stoked I found your channel! Thanks. Cheers.
Thanks, I'm glad the videos are helpful for you.

I am a woman at 5 ft tall and would like to know your recommendation for length of putter.
Joyce,
As an estimate I'd say 31 inches would be a good putter length for you. Just make sure it has a heavy head (maybe adjustable weights) as cutting a standard putter well down makes if feel a lot lighter.
Best, Adam
Between 6 to 12 inches.
Thanks for the comment

Captain Ron,
I always think you want to 'feel like' you are lined up well, even if you are not.
What's that lovely looking putter please Adam?
Mike,
It's a Coutour custom putter.

Looking at old film of Nicklaus, he is not only bent over, his head is already rotated to the left looking down his line. Like he is behind the ball with his eyes. Am I wrong? Why don’t the pros do that today?
Lawrence,
You make an interesting point. Johnny Miller (who I think is very smart) once wrote an article on the fact that Nicklaus (one of best pressure putters ever) has an unusual style, and no one seemed to copy it. Not sure the answer?
