I had the surgery to correct an underbite that could not be corrected with braces. I had my maxillary bone cut and moved forward and my mandible rotated back to one side due to one side being longer than the other. It was major surgery that lasted about 12 hours, 6 weeks with my teeth wired shut. It wasn't painful due to them cutting the nerves around the maxillary bone. I'm very, very grateful that they have surgeons that can do this surgery, it changed my life. Very, happy with the outcome!

My underbite was corrected with a mentoplate. An oral- surgeon puts it under the roots of your front bottom teeth and two hooks under your lower canines are showing. That is where I put my elastics and it worked great for me. I got the mentoplate out 4 weeks ago and it was the easiest surgery that I could think of. The second I walked out of the office I could eat normally. The stiches didn't bother me at all

I have a crossbite/underbite and they told me I'd need double jaw surgery and I am horrified. I'm 41 and they said it's a bit risky so they told me to go to a maxillofacial surgeon over 120 miles away because he's got 40 years experience. There is an oral surgeon where I live that has been doing them for about 17 years. The cost would be around $35K. The only problem I have currently is my upper incisors hit the back of my lower incisors but it only happens if I eat something soft. Dense or crunchy foods are easy for me to eat. The orthodontist made it sound like it wasn't a huge deal, live with it or get surgery. I had one tell me I need to have it done within the next few years if I decide to do it, and another tell me i could wait until 50.

Hi Dr Greg thnx for doing this video! I look forward to your new content, helps a lot through braces journeys :'D
I would really love a video explaining orthognatic surgery. I was suggested it when I was 14 due to overcrowding, and an underbite but ended up not doing it because I was very scared. But at 21 I got braces by a different orthodontist and a dental surgeon told me that I am actually not a severe enough case to have the full jaw surgery and that braces are enough in my case. I was perplexed by this! Currently receiving treatment which is a mix of the 1st and 2nd methods you mentioned here and 1yr in I am seeing good results. Very glad I did not go for the surgery!
Would like to know which cases are eligible for surgery and which aren't severe enough and why.
I also naturally have a missing set of adult premolars which could have contributed to my upper jaw not growing out as much as it should have. Every dentist I have ever seen is surprised by this.. its like an enigma haha. Have you seen cases with missing sets of teeth and maybe know why this happens? I read it could be evolution in process making mouths smaller!
Thx again for helping us out!

I have a slight edge to edge cross bite, so you can't really tell i have one at first. But I wasn't as lucky as I thought with that, my ortho told me that because of my genetics my lower jaw will continue to move fowards as I get older. They said that they could fix it by doing an extraction and leaving a space for possible later corrections. They also told me there is a chance that my jaw will move drastically and I could need surgery for it. I still have like another 8 years of my jaw growing and moving so that's why they said it could be bad but they could manage most of it as of right now with elastics thankfully. Can anyone tell me what to expect with surgery and corrections?

    • @WesleytheGlossy
      @WesleytheGlossy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@tapsubscribe I think because orthodontists need to take additional specialized course on the MEAW technique and also they need to bring in special wires for this treatment. So from a business standpoint, it might not be as ideal when underbite can already be solved with teeth extractions or jaw surgeries.

I just got braces to correct my cross/underbite at 40. I had an overbite as a kid and somehow in my 20s it turned into a crossbite, causing an underbite. I have smaller teeth and a LOT of space, never grew any bottom wisdom teeth and only one on top, so thankfully they're fixing mine with braces because I have so much space. I'm still trying to understand how I went from a bad overbite as a kid to an underbite as an adult, but I guess there aren't answers for everything lol.

I’m really worry now that my son look like he has an overbite now. Did he wait too long to stop the face gear causing it to be overbite now? The ortho said he will need 2 top and 2 bottom teeth extracted.

Do I have an underbite? When my lower jaw is relaxed, bottom teeth stick out in front of upper teeth. When I speak I notice lower teeth teeth protruding out in front of my upper teeth. I can physically pull back lower jaw behind upper teeth to form a proper bite but it’s not comfortable and when I chew it’s wearing the back of my front teeth out. It effects my speech enunciation because there’s tension when I force my lower teeth behind my upper teeth. Do I have an underbite? The fact that “I can” attain a proper bite with effort eliminate possibility of underbite and it’s something else? Thank you!

I had a 2mm underbite , crossbite and impacted canine , my surgon and ortho told me that a jaw surgery isn't necessary for my case so he did the "camoflauge" by using a mini-implant in my lower jaw with extractions and he used the torture machine for my upper jaw called (expander) 😅, now im done with both jaws and im affraid of my canine surgery 😭.
Can anyone tell me what to expect during the surgery ?

I also had an impacted canine, but it wasn't so bad. I was awake and couldn't feel ANYTHING. Had to stick to soft foods for a while. But for like 6 months the gum around my canine was sore so it wasn't comfortable when I brushed my teeth but now it's fine and my jaw is is wider so now we're fixing the underbite with elastics. I'd advise you to just leave it in the hands of your orthodontist to decide the date, so you're not too anxious and you don't continue to put if off as I did 😊

My dentist isn’t telling me shit. I had braces to fix my underbite when I was young but neither the orthodontist or my parents told me how important it was to wear my retainer so it’s shifted back. Im autistic also so people have to really drill into these things or it doesn’t get done. I don’t know what severity it is but it’s causing me jaw pain and tmj problems. The dentist has just given me jaw exercises and that isn’t really helping, if anything it’s making things worse. I think it’s a cross bite/underbite I have now because it was once fixed but it’s shifted again. I know you can’t tell as you don’t know me but I’m an adult now. Do you think braces could be repeated?

Hi Doctor. I have underbite and been on braces for quite a while to correct misaligned teeth, impacted canine, and twisted teeth. Just few months ago, we started correcting my underbite - somehow the way i see it is that my lower incisors just seem to lean back to make them stay behind my upper teeth when I bite, but their roots didn’t technically move back when in fact I have space for them to move backwards (one molar is missing on each end). Should I tell my ortho to make use of the space ? Looking at them leaning makes me feel worried about them. They used to be upright 😅 hope to hear back from ya. Keep safe!

Been wearing Moose elastics for several months during day for an underbite plus additional elastics at night to lower front teeth. Noticed lower back set of teeth teeth all slowly curving inward.. WHY!??? Front teeth are now positioned ahead of lower teeth but 'back' bite feels odd and a little gap in centre of lower teeth. My last Ortho appointment was March 16th and May's appt cancelled due to Covid-19. God only knows how far my treatment has been set back (just passed 2 yrs). At my age wearing braces was embarrassing enough but I made the leap lol. My smile is 100x better tho. Braces should be removed this year. Fingers crossed.

Doing my research here because the dentist mentioned edge to edge is bad. I thought it is perfect and normal and easy to cut food with it.
Wouldn't it be harder to cut food if front tooth is brought forwards? Hmm... I do notice my front tooths have signs of chipping.
I initially went for aligners to get my tilted outwards molar corrected but now my front tooth need to be shifted out so it overlaps the lower tooth by 2mm and the ones at the sides of it need to be angled to be slanted to the front tooth inside of just facing forwards. From what they recommend, it seems to match what the internet says..
