      Yes. I don't get the comment that thinking isn't taking action. It's actually been studied that we have less brain power per day than anything else. Thinking is an action of energy that does get depleted. Planning is an action. Consideration is an action. Communication of thinking is action. Joseph in the bible for instance was prized for his dreams and thought that helped pave the way for the country's success. More so than his brothers which had a lot of action but much of it bad and ill thought out. These are proactive actions of thinking. there are also negative actions of thinking such as still pondering when you already know a good course of action and there is only so much time to complete the task. But the idea that some physical change in the world has to come about in order to have action, is flawed IMO.

      The advice Jocko gives in his podcasts is great. I was the same for a period of time, always thinking of the pros and cons of doing things especially if it took me out of my comfort zone. But like he's said previously its best to just dive in on things you want to improve at. For me, I wanted to make a youtube channel but was worried about showing my face. But instead of trying to create one without the personalised touch, I just went for it.

      Learn something you've never tried before, without asking for expert advice - just by playing around with the thing you're learning.
      Experiment more, so that you experience failure.
      Take cold showers, to get you accustomed to what is uncomfortable.
      Set out a goal of not eating what is familiar to you and instead choosing something you've never eaten before, maybe from a different different cuisine.

      @Eternity If "God" doesn't exist everything doesn't matter and everything does matter at the same time. The same goes for when he does exist. But it's a long and tedious theological conversation we can have about that. It is wasted energy.
      Let's not let (a lack of) religion divide us, brothers and sisters. We live in the same Universe, and we are not that different.

    • @AgustinHidrobo
      @AgustinHidrobo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mm I don’t agree with that, fear was the emotion that kept us alive in the first place. That made us evolve and make solutions of our problems. Fear to die was one of the emotions that keep us going forward , and also fear keeps you focused in difficult situations. Obviously, everything in excess is bad. But I don’t think fear as a bad thing. We just have to control ourselves. And that is the hardest thing to do. Fear and being nervous is part of a human condition.

    "Quit thinking and look." - David J. Agans
    This is applicable to debugging software errors (or fixing anything in general). When an engineer tries to solve a bug, it's tempting to sit around and come up with complex and elaborate theories as to why it went wrong. This overthinking rarely solves anything since in reality the problem is usually caused by something simple...but you wouldn't know that if you were too busy complicating things with clever theories to actually just look at the code.
    If you know the way broadly you see it in all things.

    • @MrHaggyy
      @MrHaggyy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From an engineering point of view, explaining why the error or bug occured, communicate that knowledge with all people and make sure that this error does not get produced the same way again also is part of solving the bug. Especially the prove of why the error occured often involves a lot of math / complexety.

      My dad - a mechanical engineer of 30 years- used to say that internet and video games make the younger generation smarter at solving problems, but then realized that wasn't the case. He realized that his generation would find a problem, read about the problem, change it, if it doesn't get fixed then read something else and change it again. Read, adjust, read, adjust. The younger generation nowadays adjusts, adjusts, adjusts, then eventually gets it. It's a matter of reading and researching to understand versus looking and prodding until you've understood how it works.

    Absolutely right. I “overthink” and end up doing nothing. It’s all fear. Taking my dads advice from when I was a kid : “no lo pienses tanto “ and just getting after it. Feels much better.

    I love your channel Jocko. In this particular case, may be useful, if the person has a lot of fear, then that person should actually be doing something; but with more confidence, no thinking could actually be more a problem that a solution: I would balance both there, because if you don't have so much fear of the things, then the normal reaction, should be that doesn't matter the situation, you still will do. Anyway, that's just my perception, and have a nice day everyone.

    For my father and I, our hyper- analytical thinking has been linked to our survival instinct. The issue being despite our creativity and intelligence, we both have depressive disorders that vail fearful and negative thoughts as practical and real. It's as if we have conveniently forgotten that we've chained a wolf outside our door to make the "wolf at the door in your head" real.

    sounds simple, but you make great points. Some people are smart, but the fear of being wrong or the fear of something is holding back actions. It's simple, but profound. Like I feel like people haven't come to terms with past mistakes, and the fear of recreating them is what truly sets people back. Forgiving yourself is probably a step in the right direction, but developing that drive to push yourself forward is something everyone should get comfortable with.

    This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my TH-cam channel 2 months ago about self development. Now I have 169 subs and almost 80 hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I couldn’t have learned without getting started in the 1st place.

    Overthinking a situation comes from a lack of faith in the variables at hand. It is a mental pathway built upon the unreliability of either people or objects in ones life.

    The only thing we have to fear is anxiety itself. I have lately realised that this paraphrase of FDR is usually correct. The anxiety says there is a problem even though there are no outside factors that point to there being a problem.

    I have had this problem for such a long time. Probably because it's also a weird kind of addiction to anxiety and escaping from solving your problems. It can also feel comfortable to be anxious about problems (that we could actually fix with action), because that's the mode we have been so familiar with throughout our lives. Anxiety, self-criticism, giving up, avoiding, procrastination... These all have a highly addictive aspect, and enable each other. It takes away responsibility and gives us reason to say to ourselves _that's why we didn't make it, why we didn't flourish._ It's so sneaky and deceitful...
    ...What do you mean, I can actually fix my problems with action and proactive problem-solving?! 😅
    Fixing these issues is only possible by taking action. It's a tough process, but it's the road to freedom, especially for guys and gals like us who stay in our own heads too often.
