- We bought another 1999 Porsche Boxster for dirt cheap sight unseen at Copart salvage auction. We fixed it in just 20 minutes for FREE. When I first saw the car, it was in rough condition and had been sitting for years. But despite its disgusting moldy exterior, I saw potential in this vehicle and decided to take a chance on it. How can you go wrong at $1600??
In the video, I take you through the process of fixing up the car, from identifying and repairing the issues to getting it back on the road. I also share some of the unique features and details of the 1999 Porsche Boxster, as well as my thoughts on what makes this car a true gem. They are nothing special, neither performance wise nor reliability wise. Any Porsche can become collectable if enough fools want to buy it. 😉
Bought mine three years ago for 10,500. I could sell it now for 13,500 in a heartbeat. But I won't. I love it. Hold out for a low mileage S model. They're out there, just be a little patient.
The 996 is 90% Boxster. Keep up the mtc. When something breaks fix it immediately. I don't care if you have synthetic oil or not do an oil change every 3,000 mi. And you need to drive these cars they cannot sit for two or three months and then drive it for 30 mi and put it back in the garage for another 2 months then drive it another 25 40 mi then put it back in the garage for another month because when you're the finally decide to get on it that's when you're going to break stuff.
This is literally the best spec I've ever seen of my childhood dream car. Always wanted a 986 with a hardtop and that interior is worth anything that ever goes wrong with the vehicle in my opinion.
Hydralic lifters loose pressure over time. As the engine warms and the oil thins the lifters pump up. Had a customer insist I set the tappets wrong. Humble pie served after 10 mins.

You can use Liqui Moly hydraulic lifter additive to the oil. It will silence the lifters as long as they are not damaged. Happy Birthday!
Yes, it was worth the gamble. If you can get it cleaned up and reasonably presentable, it should be a winner. p.s. The LS 911 is sooooo tempting; better looking each time shown.

Where are these guys finding these car? When I try online boxster, miata, cayman, all are several times more.
As someone who bought one of these new, I can tell you the interior is called…..Boxster red, what else of course? The concept car was the same colours as yours, the same colour red was an option in the 996/911, and they still called it Boxster red. Great buy, I’d have bought it too👍

Congrats, great buy! If you due a full detail , get some factory wheels, complete fluid change, new bakes, etc the car will be great and will sell easily
With that old-style manual hood/trunk release, there is a physical lock bar that rotates into place when the car is locked. And some of the early models don't have a way to get power to the car through the driver's kick panel fuse box, so if the battery dies when the car is locked, it becomes a massive headache! When Porsche went to electronic release, they added a little pull-out-fuse that you could hook power up to and disarm alarm etc.

When you first started it, I was thinking cylinder bore scoring and that you would need some oil analysis or the right technique with a bore scope, but after the oil circulated, it sounded much better. Interior is very nice.
Bore score is a myth, alongside this IBS thing 😅

Yeah, I try to drive my 98 at least once a week, but if the weather is icky or I need my truck a lot it may sit longer.
Once it gets around 2 weeks with no driving it always sounds iffy for a bit at start. Been that way the whole time I've had her (11 years!). I wouldn't panic too much, especially after 4-5 years of sitting!
Same year as my 2 owner baby. I don't have the nicer shift knob or brake lever though.

Those are Victory brand wheels. Aftermarket. 10x30 bolt pattern. Nice wheels. Should clean up nice!

noise pre warmup can be related to even the choice of oil. my 996 would be noisy on mobil 1 but quiet on porsche spec penrite
This has to be a win surely! Tart it up, get some nice wheels and you will see a tidy profit after a good detail. Stripped and sold off for spares it has to be worth more than what you paid

So that noise is the Valves and they have to get good oil pressure for them to quiet down. Apparently, a LOT of modern cars have this problem because of the super thin oil used in so many cars nowadays. How can so many people that are supposedly " car guys " still not know some basic things about how an engine actually works ? Whatever

detail the car, do all the little fixes, and then look into the motor more. I bet driving it will help it get even better.
Try some diesel or ATF in the engine oil before you change it. ru it for 1/2 hour will clean those lifters!
