    For people saying they were neurotypical and couldn’t tell either- that is because these aren’t genuine reactions and expressions. This guy is trained to make these facial expressions so some of them are over dramatic. I’m autistic and not too bad with facial expressions but damn this dude is confusing!

      I am NT i as far as I know( I have an appointment in one year but for something else). But i can't read photos at all. I can read faces or the room with context like movement, voice timbre and body posture of ppl etc. The longer i stare in still pictures the more expressions i see and i can go full circle seeing every emotion. It's like saying the same word for a minute or more and the word loses its meaning and you wonder why that word has its usage and how arbitrary it is in itself. My experience at least

  • @MrQuantumInc
    @MrQuantumInc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    For many of these it is easier for me to imagine a scenario that might cause that facial expression, than to assign a specific word to that facial expression. It occurs to me that there are certain feelings you would only experience for second or two before changing to something else. For example, if someone is startled they would only experience "startle" for a split second before either calming down or switching to fear.

      I think it's also because we're given no context... sometimes I get what face he's making and I know when you would make it but I don't know what emotion it is? If I were to see someone making It in a conversation, i would usually understand why and what it means and how to react to it. But seeeing the same man just doing 20 different faces that could mean various things at different moments is confusing and messing with my brain.

    This is so not what people look like, when they have these emotions. What I find funny is that every person is different, therefore expresses emotions also differently. So for me, I always have to study each person, how the person reacts in situations, what expressions this person shows in which situation, and so on. Some people are harder to read, and other ones easier. Even in my past relationship, I always asked my boyfriend so many times what he was thinking in a particular moment, because I noticed an expression in his face, which I could not place anywhere. I am only realising now what a tough job that is. WOW! I had many eye openers within the past week.
    Thank you Paige for your videos. I noticed so many similarities with you, so shocking. The lalala singing, which I always do to keep my focus... or just the way you talk, think, the thing with your hair, your care for animals, easy communication with animals and children, thinking out loud, speaking what you think (straight, up front),... :D Thes list is long.

    This was super hard. I think we are better at placing these faces into scenarios than we are at necessarily naming them. I agree that they’re difficult to figure out when they aren’t genuine. I work in pediatric OT, and I rarely use pictures like this except to gauge basic understanding. Usually, I’ll pick a clip from the kid’s preferred show and we will talk about what the characters might be feeling and use context clues to figure it out. Kids are way better at this and I think it lends itself to generalization in real life much better than just a picture. Thanks for sharing, love your channel!

    I think the real problem with this exercise is that these expressions are independent of environmental context clues, which is a really big factor in how many of us decide on what expression/reaction someone is having. I think anyone just looking at a photo without any other context would really struggle. Which isn't to say "oh everyone experiences this" but more like the inability to interpret emotions/expressions isn't always just not being able to understand the expression someone is making, but also the struggle to use and identify context clues around us that lead us to infer what someone's facial expression means, if that... makes sense.

    having masked for over 30 years with my stimming and the way I am, I have become very good at seeing others and being able to tell how they are feeling from facial expressions, but body posture and movement plays a major role in telling how the facial expressions go together, is not being able to guess how others are feeling from facial expressions, really an autistic trait, or is it something more, I have become very good at hiding myself around others, but I slip up sometimes and I am called out on it, my wife notices my stimming a lot more now, as they have become more assertive in my life and it helps me cope, it hurts me to look at other peoples eyes when talking to them, but either through my masking or me being able to put up with the pain, I can, even though it hurts me I have done this. Now I am coming to terms, that in this day and age I no longer need to put myself through this pain, I can stare in another direction and space out, whilst still talking to someone, but if it is more than 1 person talking at time, then I am in bewilderment and cannot process, thus putting my hands to my ears, I now wear ear plugs to block out a lot of the noise. Okay I failed in a lot of those, I wonder if it was because there is no body to go with the head, so unable to see the entire thing.

    "Happily disgusted" is like when someone is telling a story where something gross happened, but in a funny way. Like, say that a baby's diaper leaked on the mom and she was already late for something, so it was a whole situation where she was rushing and trying to deal with it. Comedy movies often use this sort of scenario.

  • @qwandary
    @qwandary 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like how you say 'why are there more emotions from Happy Sad Angry' because when I do these things I pretty much default to happy sad or angry. Occasionally I have 'confused'. That's about it.
    I usually find they FORCE you to pick 1 of 3/4 options and NONE of the options seem right so I pick a random guess and the results are uninteresting because they're not really based on my interpretation.
    *shrugs*
    In real life I mostly just process in 2 groups; happy, sad. That's it.
    Once I know if the face is positive or negative then I use their tone of voice, body language, words, and behaviour to determine what other emotions it might be.
    And I'm severely Alexithymic, so my emotive word range is VERY limited.
    So I ALWAYS ask friends and family for their opinion once I've gathered enough 'data', as it were, and they help me make sense of it.

    Half way through and you've done pretty well. Mind you, when somebody pulls their head back, that's form of revulsion. Proper revulsion is easy enough. It's mostly combined with a cringe. The weird thing about revulsion as something to watch for is that it pairs with make extreme reaction and emotions. The problem is that as an emotion, it's like onions and garlic: you can pick it up at low concentrations, but it has a tendency to overpower itself and everything else.
    Also, it's nice to see someone somewhat like me doing the things. My "fitting in" was less than perfect and the less perfect parts of that have been hard and, while I've only watched a few of your videos, a younger me envies your ability to sing and not shut down.

      Maybe autistic facial expressions are hardwired differently but we need research to prove it. Alexithymia could also affect how we express emotions. For example, we might confuse the victory smile when we win a game with the I'm so happy to be my best friend smile, and express them at the wrong time. Masking could also play a role. For example, an autistic person could feel very happy thinking about their special interests when all alone but feel the need to suppress their facial expressions to fit in.

    I mean... how can you be fearfully sad ? fearfully happy or whatever ? These mixed emotions are so hard to get ! I don't know if this has to do with the kind of social anxiety I have but when people talk to me I hardly understand what they feel and mean if I don't know them and their facial expressions enough. So yes this one was a hard one. And also, this guy's face is not really expressive... He always shows the same expressions but they mean different things ???
