Some other bird species perform these aerial maneuvers en masse, including starlings; one can find footage of a million birds darkening the sky while flying their quick-change patterns. Sanderlings are my favorite shore birds. I was watching them at Sharp Park Beach flying just like this a few days ago and it was magical. Amazing footage!
No leader. No head. No one bird in charge. Yet they move as one to carry out a single goal that benefits each other. We humans simply can neither comprehend nor follow this behavior.
This happens periodically - youtube just ends my live streams. I have never been able to figure out what causes it. Sometimes it happens after a couple days, sometimes a couple months, once I had them last for over a year. Each time they end them I have to recreate them and then update the links on pacificaview.net/ New streams are up now.
