      You had this almost perfect except for one very important thing that you got wrong. You said that the reason that they use CGI instead of practical for transformations is that it is "relatively affordable post-production work" . This is wrong. CGI costs 4 to 5 times more than practical effects work, in every case.

    The Wolf of Wall Street was the worst werewolf movie I've ever seen.
    After the first hour, I thought it was great and that it would be a superb reveal to see who the werewolf actually was.
    After the second hour, I was increasingly sceptical that there was actually going to be a werewolf in the film at all.

    The werewolves from Van Helsing were always one of my favorites. I also think the werewolves from Love Death and Robot were really awesome. So powerful and vicious. I especially liked how the enemy werewolves took advantage of the protagonists vulnerability during mid transformation. Really dynamic.
    Edit: I meant the movie starring Hugh Jackman. Not the show.

I love others, like Dog Soldiers, but it doesn't touch the quality of the other 2. Underworld. Ginger Snaps. Good, but still not as effective. It's unbelievable that nobody has managed to beat American Werewolf's transformation. And that fucker is TERRIFYING.

    I love the implied acknowledgement that Remus Lupin's werewolf form is a great werewolf bc it really is. As a kid, even Val Helsing's werewolf- which is just excellent- didn't scare me as much as his did. It's something about the lithe, gaunt, gaping thing slowly loping towards you that really gets me. The impression of vulnerability, the hope. You look at it and you think, "if only I was _enough,_ then I could beat this weak, whining thing. I could win," but it's only a trick and that the sniveling thing that looked so weak and vulnerable- you can see how much it wants you dead, how much _it_ wants to kill _you._ You have to stare it down, realize the helplessness of your situation, and know that without outside intervention, you're shredded flesh. The big werewolves in Val Helsing and Dog Soldiers are wonderful, but not once in looking at them do you get the impression that you're making it out of this, the terror is present, but resigned. They're hulking and snarling and you know there's no way you, the audience member, could ever beat them, even if you think of a brilliant plan and correct the character in your head, deep inside you know you can't. I think that trick, the way the werewolf in Prisoner of Azkaban is so thin and long and sickly, but overwhelmingly fast and brutal, that still makes it the scariest werewolf on screen to me today.

  • @jarltrippin
    @jarltrippin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +381

    I agree entirely with your stance on CG wolves, but I have a soft spot for Van Helsing's werewolf and Lupin from Harry Potter. Lupin looks terrifying and that chase later in the film was done really well. It still freaks me out. And Van Helsing just looks fucking awesome.

      slayertakim1 You just put into words, better than I could, why I find him so terrifying. I never read the books, but one of my disappointments with the films is that we never saw Lupin transform again. Hell, we barely even see human Lupin after that movie. Shame. That canine Gollum looking fuck was probably my favourite thing to come of that franchise.

      Transformations like the Van Helsing werewolves was alway visually and metaphorically impressive to me. The beast with literally rises to the surface, ripping and tearing away the rational human being and overpowering it with is savage instinct and primal hunger and brutal strength. And once a werewolf has transformed it is totally uncontrollable.

      I also really enjoyed that transformation scene when that one guy starts crawling backwards up the wall. The werewolf was just as horrified to be transforming as the sister was to see him transform, the process looked painful and uncomfortable, and it showed him going from a caring brother to a ferocious mindless beast.

    • @ShinKyuubi
      @ShinKyuubi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Totally down with that, and the fact that when you see them each werewolf is unique in color and appearance with one looking sickly and unwell while Van Helsing when he turns is strong, powerful and absolutely vicious. My personal fave scene is where he scrapes his claws against the stone wall to taunt Dracula and sparks come off. It also plays on that whole "Vampires and Werewolves do not get along" trope that has been around for awhile.

This, to me, was one of the most satisfying, brilliant portrayals of werewolves on screen. I honestly enjoyed every second of it. From the change from man to beast, to the fight sequences, to the actual look of the werewolves. Beautifully done!

    • @harrycozens01
      @harrycozens01 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Couldn't agree more - they went hard when making that episode, as with everything else in LD&R. Even though the werewolves in Shape-Shifters didn't get a large amount of screen time, the fact they filled a mere 17 minutes with rich, creative storytelling, stunning visual effects and intense emotional weight is something to applaud. It was said best in an article I read: LD&R is a brilliant over-correction for the comparable lack of impressive Western animation as opposed to that in the East, and it did such a good job it even did the werewolf subgenre - something I've been invested in ever since Dr. Who aired its episode 'Tooth and Claw' in 2006 - proud in the process. I have immense respect for Love, Death and Robots. Blur Studios and Netflix have knocked it out of the park!

    When it comes to Werewolves I tend to think of them in a similar light to the Hulk. Specifically the first time he transforms in the Avengers. As a viewer, you know a Transformation is inevitable. You know they're going to lose control and kill everything. That's what I liked about the Avengers Transformation. His Hulk form is presented in a way that makes us understand why not only Bruce, but everyone else fears the monster within. The Hulk's entrance is terrifying. And that's the treatment I love seeing in Werewolves. Let us see how it effects the person and how they deal with controlling it.

    Unpopular opinion, but my favorite werewolf movie is The Wolfman (2010). The movie aspired to be much more than a monster movie, rather a more character-based drama on cycles of abuse, honesty, societal racial prejudices, ableism in mental institutions, mental illness and how different people deal with personal grief. It's a great film that uses werewolves as an allegory to talk about much deeper, darker and more real themes, which is the best kind of werewolf film for me. There is a lot of nuance to the acting performances and depth to the 3 main characters and their relationships with one another and I can easily see the film becoming a cult classic over the years. And the cinematography looks like something out of a Monet painting.

      "The Wolf Man" (1941) is my favorite because it focuses on the unfortunate title character. Lon Chaney's character was a victim of circumstances, a man cursed through no fault of his own. Whatever technological merits other werewolf films have, they lack an essential element if the werewolf is not a character of pity.

      I wouldn’t exactly call myself the UWU in your face furry I just love the expressionism that comes with anthro characters. I prefers the more feral ones which is from able why i love the idea of werewolves. For a monster who isn’t controllable they show so much emotion. Harry potters a good example because you can see the sadness in Remus’ eyes once it’s done. The exhaustion from all your body changing in a way that naturally would take thousands of years really shows. Same with a lot of the others the pain of the characters and their reactions is what really sells it to me much more that all the furry ‘oh no what is happening to my ears UwU I’m now a cute little baby bunny now’ oh wow I wrote a lot sorry if you had to read all that 😅 either way I’m slowly falling out of the furry fandom I just enjoy the look of the more old fashioned anthro characters.

    One thing I wanted to make known is that the characters in Twilight are not really werewolves. They are really more shapeshifters that don't really have any of the traits of a werewolf (such as transforming during the full moon, having a weakness to silver, and being able to turn others into werewolves).

    My personal favorite movie werewolf s Remus Lupin. His transformation looked painful and terrifying, and he looked genuinely scared when he started to transform. It's a very deep character whose biggest fear is his lycanthropy. I love the design of the werewolf too, the skinny and sickly looking design works perfectly with what werewolves symbolize in that universe, which is an untreatable sickness that people fear and try to stay away from. The fact that he was still very dangerous and scary used to terrify me when I was younger

      I just watched it again after years (about 1 week ago). It was because I accidently saw a Van Helsing clip on youtube. When I was so young I thought it was a good movie and very scary. Now I grew up and think it's bad as a movie stand point.
      I think the plot seems good but was executed poorly. So many good material like Frankenstein, connection between Dracula and Van Helsing, Dracula purposes. However, much more thing do not make sense and ton of tons of tons plot holes that I don't even bother typing here. While I was re-watching this weeks ago, I kept telling myself "How did I like this or this back then".
      However, I still very like the werewolf CGI. It is awesome, threatening and very good. Dracula probably the best part of the movie, he owned every scenes he was in. He look cool, act like a boss, talk and move like a boss as he should be. They hided the vampire form so well in the first half and it actually made him better and more scary. Then you saw it and disappointed (even as a kid I was very let down for that). If only they could make it as good as werewolf CGI. Even when I was a kid I was scared of his human form more than his vampire form. Then only very few action scenes are good. Most of them do not make sense but still very entertaining.
      It is not underrated. It's just a bad movie but not as bad as people say it is. It has good chemistry between Van Helsing and his side kick, few but good humor, good werewolf CGi and very good Dracula performance. However I still like it for some reasons.

    I can see how you would _want_ a werewolf transformation to take a while, so that you really appreciate how unnatural it is and where it falls on the ever-unclear pain/pleasure scale (because seriously, I can imagine a couple of werewolf movies going full-on sensual with the shifts, as well as the more common agony). However, I think there's a point where it goes on for too long and my suspension of disbelief breaks down - not for the werewolf, but for any characters watching. How long are they going to stand there staring while this person turns into a bloodthirsty beast? Run, or attack, while they're still mid-shift and not as dangerous!

      I plan to write a graphic novel about werewolves and I'm going to tell the artist that I want the werewolves to look as close as possible to the werewolves from Van Helsing without it looking like we're ripping off Van Helsing. I agree completely. I have played the game twice now just for the werewolves. I love how they are done and this should be the blue print for future lycan movies. I love how the newer more feral werewolves are more animal like and walk on all fours where the "elders" or the higher werewolves are taller and are bipedal and are intelligent and can even talk. They are also more human looking the older they are which suggests they get smarter and more powerful over time. If you go to any post on the game devs FB posts or Twitter the comments are full of people begging for a sequel to that game.

    • @Darkandahalf
      @Darkandahalf 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree there was a lot of wasted potential but from what I can gather it was the restrictions placed on Ready at Dawn by Sony. Interviews with the devs say that there is a lot of lore in The Order universe that could fill multiple games, unfortunately Sony have them by the balls and won't approve a sequel or a prequel. Bastards. My favourite part was the cinematic battle between the elder half breed and Gallahad. When you have to shoot it when it pounces at you and it scurries off. It was short lived but if they filled the game with segments like that instead of those horrendous QTE events, the game would be really something special and scary.

      I actually really loved Lupin's final wolf form because it so well embodied what being a werewolf actually meant, how it actually effects the victim. In Rowling's universe, being a werewolf is truly an *illness*. Not only are they feared and looked down on in society, but the sickness itself wreaks havoc on the victims health and body. It wears them down, weakens them, especially when the person has had the illness since childhood and they have had to go through the change every month for 20+ years. It makes total sense that Lupin wouldn't be this strong, fierce, healthy wolf. He was sickly in human form, so he was just as sickly in wolf form.
      I also really love it for how different it is from the usual werewolf we see in cinema. We, as the audience, hear Hermione say he's a werewolf, and our minds automatically go to this image of a huge, hairy beast that we've seen so many times. But then, when he actually transforms, it goes so hard against our expectations that it's honestly chilling. It's almost like we're unsure, at first, whether to even be afraid or not, which of course then causes us to be even more scared when it shows that he truly is a serious danger.

    . European Werewolves: are big and hairless, and they grow bigger and stronger every time they kill and consume their prey.
    . American Werewolves: are the ones we know and love covered in fur.
    . Japanese Werewolves: turn into normal wolves.
    . And Lokoti Werewolves: look mostly human with wolf like appendages. (The kind of Werewolf you see in Supernatural I guess.)
    You could just excuse movies of werewolves that turn into normal wolves as the Japanese types.

    I'm not sure if you can call it a werewolf, but for me Vicar Amelia from Bloodborne fits these aformentioned categories pretty well. Although the transformation from human to monster is not shown you can feel the sheer pain of it through her screams and rearrangment of bones as both heard and shown from her shadow.
    She is also tall and monstrous in appearance and yet retains human traits (elongated arms and five fingers) and posture (hunched over as if in prayer). And given to how much Vicar Amelia shrieks during her fights she is likely not enjoying this bestial experience or has completely embraced the monster within.

    I always loved werewolves as the representation for the base animal nature in mankind that we'll never be able to escape. Anger, fear, hell even lust as you touch up on lightly near the end can all play into that. The full moon isn't necessary to make a great werewolf, but the savage uncontrollable nature of the beast I believe is key. The full moon just helps emphasize that no, we can't control it. Whenever there is a full moon you *will* turn. That's just a natural law of the curse that you can no more change than you could make a fish breathe on land.

    American Werewolf: The horror bits as well as the comic bits work to enhance each other and the result makes you uncomfortable. It’s sheer brilliance, from the opening scene in the pub and the moors, to the dream sequences with funny zombies, the transformation FX that are completely in service of the film, the Piccadilly Circus extreme slapstick, the fantastic acting and the fact that the wolf is never the protagonist, but always David Naughton’s character. One of the very few movies where dread and comic relief not only go hand in hand, but are interchangeable. Masterpiece.

    Yes! I love werewolves! For me the best werewolf designs (regardless of final execution) are the dog soldiers, doctor who and skyrim werewolves. The skyrim ones are damn near perfect. I don't like the hairy dude with fangs design or the cop out straight up wolf design. For me a werewolf has to be big and bipedal while kind of hunched over, walks and runs on two legs but can sprint on all fours. As for execution I think we need a Jurassic park style blend of practical effects and expertly mixed CG

    Now that I’ve watched this I’ve got to say that 2 of my favorites are Prisoner of Azkaban, and the US version of Being Human. Keep in mind that I haven’t seen many of the older movies, before my time. Prisoner of Azkaban did a great job of showing the suspense of the transformation, as well as showing how the curse effects the person that transforms. Lupin as a character is easy to love. The reason I like Being Human’s take is because they emphasize that it is an animal. Not necessary a malicious monster, just a wild animal. Though that animal happens to be capable of incredible violence, it is just an animal. Due to this, the show does a great job of handling the ‘morning after’ of being a werewolf.
    When you consider just how directors and storytellers can use their budget and how much time is available, the werewolf is difficult to fully encapsulate. You might be able to do some parts really well, but due to that focus other aspects become unrealistic.

    CG has its place, but it should never be used in its entirety. The problem with CGI is that the best CGI goes unnoticed, whereas the worst CGI is all anyone can talk about. The same is true about practical effects as well, if the practical effect looks stupid (like many, many practical effects have) then people will notice it as well.

    • @robertherrick6703
      @robertherrick6703 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. CGI can be good. I don't cringe when I watch The Matrix today, but bad the CGI in The Matrix Reloaded when Neo fights all those Agent Smiths looks terrible today. It looked bad back then when I saw it in a movie theater.
      Good practical effects can stand the test of time like the transformation in An American Werewolf in London. I was born in the early 1980s but I didn't see that movie until the mid to late 2000s and I was impressed with those effects.

    I think it works amazingly in animation because when everything is drawn or looks drawn the transformations look just as real as the rest which makes almost all monsters more terrifying. I know quite a few people lack the capability to suspend their disbelieve far enough to find drawn or animated images frightening as an adult but if you can get yourself into the mindset it's really one of the best forms of media to show convincing body horror.

    It's obviously not a film, but I really like the way werewolves are depicted in the Vampire The Masquerade tabletop rpg. In that Werewolves are these terrifying, huge and unstoppable forces of nature that even vampires can't match up to. They can think and talk, if they want to, but they generally just kill the player characters on sight. Killing them is possible, but incredibly difficult and dangerous, so even powerful vampires tend to run away if they come across them.
    Instead of showing sub par cgi, these movies should show us powerful supernatural creatures flinch in abject terror when they hear a wolf howl in the night. That would make for a terrific film monster.

      You raise an interesting point - in a world with a number of different kinds of horrific creatures, having one type of monster that terrifies all the rest a stroke of genius from a horror standpoint. For the sake of raising tension, seeing how something like a vampire or a gargoyle reacts when faced with the mere possibility of a werewolf is a spectacular way to build up the beast.

      Whats funny is that in Underworld Lycans are kind of implied to be a different species than Werewolves. As the lore goes William was the first werewolf and anyone he killed or bit would turn into a werewolf but stay in permanent beast frenzy at all times never changing back to human. Somehow Viktor got some of these wolves to breed and created Lucian the first Lycan a werewolf who could turn back into a human form and retained sanity during both states.

    In oreder to bring the good old werewolf back someone must resort to old good horror mood without too many fillers in between action horror scenes.
    The werewolf in howling (the first one) is the perfect example werewolf movie for me as far as it gets.
    Plus I agree absolutely with all you say in the video.

      While the movie itself was good the werewolf looked lame and cheesy the only one that looked worse was the werewolves in the dog soldiers

    My favorite "Werewolf" movie is Van Hellsing, they made them look amazing. They also behave like a werewolf really would in my opinion.

    Hey man i know you are a similar age to mine. Don't you remember the TV series "werewolf" in the late 87's? I remember as a kid i was so scared of this show. The main character was a werewolf but looking for the top of his bloodline so he could kill him and stop his curse. That was pretty cool. But i admit last time i saw it i was like 8... Good stuff anyways, again....

      I loved that show as a kid. I've even started watching it again and am about half way through the lone season which is about 29 episodes long. You can find them all on youtube. Where it's not as terrifying as it used to be it's still pretty good stuff for werewolf buffs looking for a fix. It's a bit like the old Incredible Hulk TV show where each episode he goes from place to place helping people by killing bad guys.

    I see a lot of Van Helsing fans on here. I liked it. But the #1 werewolf film ever made is "An American Werewolf in London". It can't be topped. Transformation is great. David's futile resistance, again great. The love story. David's torn apart buddy forced to roam the Earth. The subway scene (where a guy with a briefcase is first defiant, then a little scared because he hasn't seen the WW yet, and then truly frightened when he sees a beast beyond anything he thought possible.) The humor (zoo scenes especially).

    The Howling has the coolest, Dog soldiers have the most abstract, Bad Moon has the scariest(Final form and very subjective as I say this movie as a kid and I'm a little biased), American Werewolf in London has the best transformation. I love this genre

      Howling's werewolves I think get slept on because the latter movies are straight up trash. But they are some of my favorite bipedal types.
