    This movie is utterly moronic, and it knows it, but I still found it immensely disturbing.
    Not the walrus-aspect, but the thought of being kidnapped and mutilated, while having your mind rent so thoroughly asunder that you cannot even recognise yourself as human on the most basic level...that got to me.

    • @guyfieri148
      @guyfieri148 3 ปีที่แล้ว +194

      Yeah, it's disturbing as hell, especially because the only thing some of us have. Thinking of myself not being human is just so wrong, it makes me violently uneasy just thinking about it I would dread to feel the pain and suffering Wallace went through, sure he was a bit of a douche but nobody deserves what he endured, with few exceptions

    • @Vipercobra88
      @Vipercobra88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      I'd say that is what makes Kevin Smith a great film maker. This movie plays on that fear, in spite of it being moronic and the film is self-aware of that.

      @Tb. Aris Suchranudin when furries become a eldritch horror lmao. And while I do think of humans as animals (not in an edgy way ok), the thing thats so scary about this concept is the loss of self or sentience - not unsimilar to why we're afraid of death, maybe even worse, cause you would actually experience it. Because we got such a ego and much self awareness, the brain cant cope with the idea that was makes us "us" will eventually cease to exist and ofc thats scary af.

    I think the cruelest thing about this movie was the girlfriend stopping the mercy kill. Even if Wallace underwent corrective surgery, his life would be completely different and the extreme trauma would no doubt haunt him for the rest of his days.

    • @marcoaraiza9381
      @marcoaraiza9381 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      its a mercy kill without consent. they literally couldve stopped that kill and then try again asking wallace to wiggle or blink 3 times if they should kill him or try surgery

    • @Zethyzingerrooo
      @Zethyzingerrooo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marcoaraiza9381agreed, as cruel as it would’ve sounded in the moment “mercy killing” wally would’ve been taking more choices away from him. Later on he could request a DNR so if his heart gave out they could not revive him if his vitals failed. (Or in modern day canada, request medically assisted suicide) But if wally wanted to keep fighting for his life? That choice would have to be up to wally or his family. In a scenario where they actually take him to a hospital, if he survived the initial bacterial infections it wouldn’t be that impossible to get him out of the suit and to free his arms. Hes able to move in the movie reasonably well so we can assume hes mostly intact underneath. Maybe a few skin grafts might be needed. Plastic surgery even at that time was doing amazing things so while it would take the most time/not look “exactly” like his original face is still possible. The hardest part for wally would have been pain management, the huge amount of physical therapy for him to recover/learn how to walk again, and the mental therapy to help him work through what happened to him and help accept his new disabilities. Im pretty confident that if they had given wally a chance instead of dumping him at that shitty zoo, he still had a very good chance at a fairly normal life, just not as a podcaster

      The most absurd thing is that there was actually a zoo that would accept him! If I was in charge of that place I’d just try and come up with anything that could be done to cover up putting this man out of his misery(like bacterial infection!), cause on one hand it’s the merciful thing to do, on the other hand it’s still a human and the legality of said mercy kill would still be up for debate(in terms of the law).....
      It’s just all around fucked up but that just adds to the terror of being mutilated so badly you’re not even recognizable as human anymore, not even by other people

      Well, it isn't that he has a walrus body therefore he has a walrus mind...it's because Howard has been conditioning him. Part of Wallace WANTS to mentally become walrus. Not because he wants to be a walrus, but because he wants the horror of his current condition to stop. If he has the brain of a walrus, then the suffering goes away and Howard is pushing him toward that fact. It's twisted and would likely take far longer to achieve than the movie depicts...at least, without any sort of drugs to make the mind more pliable.

    An interesting video you may want to dissect: Oats Studio's short film Zygote. The monster design is reminiscent of John Carpenter's The Thing but with less ambiguity. It is genuinely terrifying to look at and probably one the vest monster designs I've seen in a while. It also has the rare trait of making something rather lovecraftian be visualized on a screen. Even if you don't decide to make a video on it, just give it a watch. It is honestly a masterpiece for a short, low budget film and it deserves recognition.

    Although I think by mutilating a human so it looks like a different species all together kinda just counteracts that statement but whatever. A broken clock is right twice a day

      Movies with the whole "humans are the most savage animal" deal, while pulling some other philosophical bs (Walrus at heart? fking really?) just makes me flinch. Why the huge generalization? What happened to the whole "everyone is unique" deal? Some humans are savage animals, no denying that. But putting the entire humankind into a single pack of "should be extinct" is a narrow-minded take.
