@@karinefonte516 She-Ra (2018) depicts a different royalty system, from all that I can tell (and still heavily features characters who are queens). This time, Casta earns her title as Head Sorceress.
It's easy to cherry pick ONE character who got demoted in this show. Plenty more characters seem a lot more interesting and prominent than their 80's counterparts.
The new She-Ra had a 52-episode run. Not every character could have a complex storyline. And it's a shame we didn't see more of Casta's journey! But I think it's hard to say that the show fails us in the "women with a complex storyline" department, given its constricted runtime!
I'll admit I've only seen a couple of episodes of the original show. I find it jarring to watch because I'm used to much newer animation (with a few exceptions such as Scooby-Doo and Tom and Jerry) and TV in general - which doesn't mean it's "bad" or anything, of course not.

    • @3dmaster205

@@HaywireRuckus No, it's a proper royalty system where kings and queens are the highest rulers, there were kings who got killed off, and their daughters never got promoted to queens, hence the rebellion being the "princess alliance". It's the same issue with Disney princesses, and The Princess Diaries films, etc.; queens don't appeal to girls, they are adults and thus older, they have accountability and responsibility; girls and women don't like that. They want all the perks of power, but none of the drawbacks, they like to dictate what needs to be done, without suffering the consequences if it goes wrong, along with staying eternally young and fertile; and fiction and capitalism; especially when it is written by women caters to that.

She-Ra was NEVER He-Man's inferior. Like most things in the 80's feminism was picking up steam, since the 70's, and so when a girl cartoon was created, the typical oh so perfect female heroine was created. And yes, She-Ra pretty much is perfect. She was kind, brave and selfless, her foes were more powerful than her own brother's (Skeletor was Hordak's LIEUTENANT and he gave He-Man troubles), and her problems were never of her own making and were smaller compared to He-Man's. Let's face it, loving a 'bad boy' isn't a flaw, it's a fantasy, especially as she gets to redeem him. Meanwhile her brother is forced to play the buffoon, which costs him the eternal respect of his own father who lamented that he wish He-Man was his son, rather than Adam.
She-ra was never He-Man's inferiour. Anyone says otherwise is a liar and should disregard as they have an agenda.

@@Slitheringpeanut You rather hit the nail on the head, tho' one can say Hordak got a better promotion because Skeletor DID get captured and sung like a canary, while Hordak managed to capture Adora and enslaved most of Eternia. All that aside I don't believe Larry DeTillo and others intended to make She-Ra superior to He-Man, just some of the stuff came off that way, especially given in the 80's we really started to see a lot of 'mishandled empowerment' moves in various media. Some handled well, some not so good.
Otherwise, you make a compelling point that aside from my minor points, I concur with wholly.

    • @Slitheringpeanut
      @Slitheringpeanut 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

@@XenoJehuty84 I don't think there was any maliciousness involved, just data based on some tests. Back in the mid-60's early 70's, the networks found out that the biggest consumer of visual media like television and movies were women, to the tune of 60%.
And wanting to know how to market and make money they ran a few psychological tests.
The Networks found that women do not like to be seen as socially awkward and that they like to 'be' the person on screen, unlike men, who just want to have the abilities of the hero and have their own adventures. Boys want to HAVE He-Man's powers, girls want to BE She-Ra. And the 'Mary Sue' (a term coined by a woman who wrote a parody of the Star Trek self-insert fan fiction of the time) was an excellent way to get women into their shows.
Unfortunately, since the 80's She-Ran and other girl's shows, we (as a society) have taken it too far and now we have... Well, this among other things.

Here's one thing that could have fix Castaspella ,Micha, and Angela's relationship. Micha and Castaspella were twins who worked under Lightspinner and her acts to achieve power lead to Micha working harder for more offensive spells to fight off Shadow Weaver if she comes back, plus the horde, and Casptaspella to study defensive and healing magic to save and protect. This would lead them to have a difference in acting in the war, to be strong enough and go off against the foe or stay and insure the safety of their people. This would lead to Angela and Micha falling in love and Micha now wanting to protect two kingdoms at once, putting more strain on him. Castaspella grows to have a unfriendly relationship with Angela for the pressure her brother has to go through. And when he dies, it becomes and huge shift for them. Angela left a widow, Glimmer fatherless, and Castaspella without her brother who she swore to protect, this will give weight to how the death of a loved one can effect a family.

I think the story of old Shadow Weaver and Castaspella says it all; they hate the old Castaspella because she got her way through hard work vs Shadow Weaver who tried to force her way into everything and ended up not just fucking up things for the people connected to her but herself.
DOESN'T THIS SOUND A BIT FAMILIAR?
In essense, Noelle and Co are like the old Shadow Weaver where they feel that just by default they are obligated to have everything they want, doubly so because of whatever status they can cling to and throw around. Castaspella on the other hand proves that hard work will pay off in the end no matter your gender which is an argument that Noelle n co use almost as a massive crutch on their own, that is that because they are women they will never have chances and therefor everything must be handed to them now because of how things went in the pass, despite in their efforts they have also erased women who have defied stigmas LONG before they have, placing themselves on a mantle they did nothing to deserve.
That or there is the other idea that Noelle n Co are writing themselves into the series so what we're seeing is how they idolize themselves and wish how things could be with other people. And we already know how much they hate male characters to begin with so Norwin's downgrade isn't anything new but again, what they want and wish for when it comes to them getting in that position of power. Of fucking course Norwin's not going to have any decent character development. Has ANY character with a dick in this show gotten one? NO. That's how fucking delusional Noelle n Co are. They're so distracted in trying to make 'PERFECT FEMALE REPRESENTATION' that the only way they know how to do that is taking every male character and fucking up their own story and motivation and Noelle isn't the first person guilty of this type of shitty writing. It's happened so many fucking time with all these 'NU' progressive writers it's not funny anymore.
They aren't being transparent at all in the message they're trying to give but in doing so they're not just showing their hand in whatever 'agenda' you want to call, if you want to call it agenda at all. No, what they're doing is showing off just at the end of the day they're terrible writers. They can't deal with multifaceted characters, no matter what status said character has. All they're out to do is 'prove' something but all they've proved is that they can't even deal with a show where things are already laid out for them nor can then even handle their own messages. In their attempts to make She-Ra stronger by not having her stand in Adam's shadow (which she never did even in her own show. He-Man was already OFF by the time She-Ra was on) they've actually made her seem weaker since she has no grasp of her own powers and is so far still so socially inept that she can't even function normally as a civilian.
Contrast to the original Adora who took the helm in the original movie/special and from that moment on knew she had to hold onto such a massive responsibility so there was no fucking time for proms or spa days or whatever the fuck this show is trying to give us. They can't pace anything right yet we're supposed to find this show as some sort of genius reboot? Kiss my Black ass, this show is fucking horrible and it's even worse at representation. What representation? Just recoloring everyone with shitty tans isn't 'representation', Noelle. Drawing everyone like lumpy potatoes isn't 'representation', Noelle. Making nearly every male character in this show an emasculated creep isn't 'representation', Noelle. Thinking that shipping everyone together isn't 'representation', Noelle.
If people like Noelle focused on developing characters as much as they obsessed over click-baiting sites to mention how much they 'represented' we wouldn't be here. We wouldn't be here pointing out plot holes, terrible character writing and bad direction. We'd actually be enjoying the fucking show but this is where we are and this is why I keep saying don't let slacktivist make your fucking cartoons.

Can I ask have any of you actually watched all of the reboot She-ra? The characters definitely are good and have a great storyline. I think the main problem is that they called this a reboot. When it really isn't. It has the same characters and storyline with changes. This show is not for the old She-ra fans. It just isn't. It's something new yet retro for the newer generations. They're biggest mistake was trying to drawn in old fans with this show but that doesn't mean it's doesn't have great qualities.

As someone who did not complete the original She-ra series (watched a bit but didn’t enjoy the animation style) and loved the reboot, I really wanted to watch someone who would give an intellectual insight into where the reboot falls short in the eyes of those who enjoyed the original and I think you both honed your points really well without sounding like disgruntled fans that wanted to simply trash the reboot. Though I do not agree with all of your points I do agree with some of them. Having Castaspella’s original story be transferred to Micah to be her exceptionally gifted older brother to create a sibling cliche where she lives in her older brother’s shadow- that’s exposed through dialogue by Shadoweaver only to be promptly ignored- was unnecessary. Additionally having her act as the “stereotypical aunt”, though probably meant to add some light-heartedness to a serious situation, failed at that and ended up just being annoying at times. However, i did not agree with everything. It is important to note that the new She-re is a REBOOT and not a REMAKE. Rather than recreating the same story with different graphics (I.e. the live action Disney movies) the Netflix She-ra takes the same characters and puts a whole new spin to them (I.e. Netflix’s Legendary Defenders of Voltron or Cartoon Network’s Teen Titans Go and Powderpuff Girls). Granted, the original version of a production will always cast a shadow over any reboots or remakes that follow it, and fans of any original have every right to get upset when new versions aren’t up to par, especially when it tramples on the their childhood nostalgia. I definitely faced this when Teen Titans Go was initially announced but eventually, after numerous months, ended up enjoying the show for what it is - a light hearted, comedic look into the daily lives of the Titans separate from the high-stakes, high- intensity battles from the original. Same characters, different story. On that note, to claim that Netflix’s She-ra doesn’t show representation has me wondering what your definition of representation is. First, your entire argument rests on the exclusion of the complex relationship between Castaspella and Lightspinner/ Shadoweaver, but you fail to mention how that relationship still exists but in different characters (Adora and Catra) and how the original idea was expanded upon (from the allies-to-enemies arc to the friends-enemies-lovers arc) to create an even more complex dynamic between Adora, Catra, and Shadoweaver. Second, Castaspella didn’t get weaker from the original to the reboot, her role was just changed. Instead of being the QUEEN of the KINGDOM of Mysticore she became the HEADMISTRESS to the ACADEMY of Mysticore. As such, holding the highest position deigns her as the most powerful and just as educated and well-versed in sorcery as her regal counterpart. To ignore that and imply her new role as Glimmer’s aunt makes her a lesser character is myopic. Third, the original She-ra taught girls they can use their own power to fight for what’s right, and did it well (from what research I’ve done) and the new She-ra again expands upon that. Empowerment is displayed numerous ways: female empowerment through ranging character body types and personalities atypical to the “female character” stereotype; queer empowerment through the normality of every homosexual relationship; and racial empowerment through the cream, brown, pink, green, blue, purple, etc. skin tones and character species. The Netflix version could never replicate the original. Not only because the original is legendary in its own right, but because the times, tech, and people have changed drastically in the 25 years since the original aired. Comparing the two isn’t fair. Those in the comments using flimsy excuses like “lack of representation”, "no boobs" and “ginger bias” to diss the show because their nostalgia is being messed with is understandable, but still ridiculous.

Puts a huge damper of that "representation" they claim to care so much about. I find it funny how when you care more about representation than the whole story, you either do too much or try too hard, or you don't do enough. A creator doesn't have to take away everything a character has to change them. Sometimes you don't even need to change anything to a character. If you're just changing stuff or adding characters for the sake of representation, then you need to think over more than twice at the concept phase or drawing board again. "Female empowerment" would have had more value if it was the 80s-90s, but today, the whole "women empowerment" thing is just oversaturated with the same boring and uninteresting theme. It all feels the same to me, more so than the claim of the "nowadays songs sound the same" bit.
I liked Mulan because it wasn't just empowerment, it's honor and she joined the army in place of her ill father. It wasn't just becoming a queen or something or proving she can be capable. She is capable but she didn't have to be up in people's faces to prove that. She didn't wanna prove anything much, she just wanted to fight for her country. It was her duty the moment she joined. She wanted to help or protect her father so he doesn't bear the burden of being killed while being ill in the war.
When I look back, the old version had more restrictions to work around while the new one has so much to do whatever the hell it wants, but did so badly. I then realized that when you have less, you may have to think more and you end up doing more. When you have more, you may think less and end up doing less.
Also, excluding He-Man would be a slap to the faces of people who have siblings lol.

The very first episodes show her come into her own as a character and that she made the choice herself to become She-Ra; the Netflix version, from what I have read, has it just "happen" to her and she doesn't know how to do it. First failure in female representation - ignoring that She-Ra/Adora has AGENCY/CHOICE to do what she does, from going to see her birth parents to leaving to join the rebellion. No, what made me like She-ra reboot at first is how serious it *tries* to be. I see a trend in cartoons that started with Teen Titans, where every cartoon must be extremely colorful, extremely over the top and so noisy like thy're trying to grab the attention of someone with severe ADHD in a train station.
She-ra reboot had a more serious undertone with the idea of child soldiers, betrayal, Catra unable to understand change can be a good thing for her, and the way characters talk to each other allowed for the ideas behind each chapter sink in. It reminds me a lot of the early 2010's, when animation in the West had respect for itself.
I guess you can say I could see what the minds behind the project were trying to do, while ignoring the flawed execution. I did catch on to a lot of errors, but since I was unaware most of the plot points and character dynamics had already been done in the original with far better execution, I was giving it a pass.
Now that M and J have compiled quite a lot of points against the reboot using the original as a landmark and the interviews I see both on their channel, ClownfishTV and The Quartering, I am far less willing to be as kind to the show as I was until recently.

I remember when the princesses & queens in the original felt real. They never just stood by and did nothing. They had to deal with foreign nation, worry about the Horde attacking their land. They weren't dotting adults who does absolutely nothing to aid their people or the rebellion. Mermista did nothing and just accepted the sea wall would fall and let her people flee. Entrapta who was never royalty cares for none of her people. Queen Angela honestly does nothing compared to the original where she fought for her husband. Fought by her people. Fought along side her daughter. Glimmer is a irresponsible idiotic brat, compared to in the original when she had the responsibility of the Horde and her Kingdom before Adora/She-Ra aided them.
These newer version of these character have less responsibilities, are less heroic and are played for laughs. This reboot takes two steps back for strong female representation.

Bo is the only one who was actually race bent. Castaspella and Sea hawk are still white but the removed their red hair for no reason. I myself grew up with he-man where my sister grew up with the original she-ra. The articles about the series show absolutely nothing about the show itself(stories, character development) and only talk about how "inclusive" and "diverse" the characters are...for three sentences. The remainder of most articles are all about the "creator" Noelle and how great a feminist she is and how empowering this show is, how "fierce" the "diversity" is, yet showing NOTHING about character development, story arcs that are actually meaningful, and...hold it. Wasn't the original show essentially a story for the toy line so girls wouldn't be left out when their brothers are playing with their he-man figures? That's INCLUSIVE there!!! Sharing with siblings. All I hear from other videos(btw, ladies - great video!) is how we need "More girl power" and "smash the patriarchy" when we all should be standing together.

    • @HaywireRuckus
      @HaywireRuckus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

...So you're telling me the original was """inclusive""" because it was an afterthought, realising He-Man was marketed more toward boys, and they... Made a "girl version" because they later realised girls exist? I don't even think that's how it went down (as I think in general it was/is easier to make money off a male-led show, hence why they started with He-Man), but that's how you're describing it. "Huh, maybe we should do a girl one and make even more money" is not inclusion or progressive. That's making women come second, but doing better than ignoring them altogether.
...Also the new show has plenty of good character arcs and interesting, meaningful plots. They're not talked about as much, I believe, because we LGBTQIA+ people are sorely underrepresented in media, ESPECIALLY family media. It fails women because it turns them all from being powerful rulers into crybabies who can't do anything without looking crazy.
It fails minorities because they aren't making new memorable characters, they're giving us scraps of previously established characters that already have lore attached to them and messing with that.
It fails LGBT+ because the characters only show up for a few seconds or one episode and contribute NOTHING to the main plot other than simple pandering to get people to think this good couple.
The new She-ra fails because the writing is awful. It doesn't matter how much diversity you add to your show. If your writing is sub-par it will NOT matter.

Even if you detach it from the original series, it comes across as confusing and pointless.

It was cancelled after two season, but the story was really good and you could get a sense of tension during battles. Even the filler episodes were used for character development. The way she was praising made the review look like something made by a person who has NEVER seen an animation with strong female characters, because everything she praised the new She-Ra for was done better in a ton of other shows.

Take the representation of women in this show. For them it just adds up to most if not all the female characters outside of the Horde leader are in charge....and that is kinda it. No real deep back stories, no real team outside the main 3 when what is a war happening all around the world and BOOM that's it!
Same when it comes to race and sexuality! Characters show up, kinda do what is a nod and wink and the screen and are to NEVER be seen again or if they are lucky show up in a small part that let you know "Hey I am around....I am not doing anything but HEY! I am Black/gay/female/etc!...okay gonna walk of screen now!"

Did we watch the same show? Mermista and Bow are clearly recurring POC that play important roles. The part about there being "no real team" is a believable consequence of the planet being war-torn. A big plot point is that they are trying to build up a rebellion, but it takes time. And I do agree that a lot of shows engage in tokenism and put in minimal effort to represent minority groups, but in She-Ra the three main characters are literally two women and a black guy! And it's not like they're stereotypical examples of them either. I agree that the LGBT characters could have gotten a bit more time in the spotlight, but I'm happy with what we got. Netossa and Spinnerella don't have that much screentime but appear more than once, Double Trouble is a cool non-binary character that is important in Season 4, and Catra and Adora get confirmed as lesbians at the end. Besides, it's not like straight relationships got disproportionately more coverage, like in other shows. As for deep backstory, Catra's character arc is really interesting to me, much more so than the original. Her trauma has affected her so badly she doesn't know what's best for her and those around her, and that's why she can't be with Adora right away. I could gush about this show for a while, but I really find it refreshing and don't think these arguments hold any water.

Original characters were bold, striking, fierce, funny and women, not early teen girls, which the new version promotes them as. I have tried, I watched some of it, and it's too Manga and somehow lacking that impact the original had. I don't like this blurring of good and evil, I know it's to make them seem more realistic but I like the sharp distinction. As regard diversity and different body shapes, etc, is fine and expected these days.
Reboots like DuckTales work so well on every level, the redesigns are tremendous, probably better than the originals, and not too different from them, but the She Ra universe, like Catra, have changed so much out of recognition you might as well call it a different series all together.

Diversity means characters with different backgrounds, personalities, philosophies, as well as race, gender, etc. If you truly have diverse characters, they can play off each other in different ways that let the viewer/reader see different perspectives while creating interesting story dynamics. Representation is about checking off a box that a character with a certain trait is present, and that's all that's considered.

Personally I feel like the new series episodes are the first drafts written by high schoolers that didn't get along with their moms and never actually watched he-man or she-ra. Not only did they remove the excellent lessons she-ra taught but replaced them with mostly incompetent children who keep lying to their parents and each other for seemingly no reason.
    Also
Why in greyskulls honor are the "good guys" using child soldiers?! I kind of understand the bad guys using them since it evil as hell to abduct children and mold them into soldiers the good guys would have a hard time hurting but the good guys just decide to give their kids military titles and leave them to conduct war with no oversight?!

I don't remember specific episodes, but I do remember admiring Adora and loved how in the original she had that alias. I use to pretend I was her a lot. Anyway, it's interesting how they creators of this new version didn't think She-Ra originally didn't show case 'female empowerment' when interestingly enough the 80s in general were all about showing off that very subject and it did reflect in certain media. Also personally I can't stand modern Feminism because it's so underhand in it's message sometimes. FYI, I am a 37 year old female too.

I've seen a view episodes and clips and can kind of say the designs in the original are actually pretty decent and maybe a view touch ups could still work today. Like She-Ra herself seems no different than movie wonder woman and even has that greek Athena vibe coming off of her. Bow could be like the chivalry Robin hood with Hawkeye arrows, Scorpia like an actual scorpion is a blind assassin and is not a princess but an orphan taken in for her skills. Represent blind people and scorpion lovers at once, and Catra would play the part as her dependent look out and surveillance.
Entrapta and Hordak's redesign are actually pretty good, they seem to be a real improvement compared to their original counterpart. They are the most tech centric characters so it would make sense for their attire to include protection and machinery. The original designs while not bad, you couldn't really tell them apart from most other horde members who use magic and combat over technology.

In the smokescreen of representation they shovel in their own tumbler/twitter narrative which translates to corruption of the ideals of Filmation's She-Ra had established. But, hey what's the cost of undermining an original project when Netflix & DreamWorks can threaten Mattel: Do this or no money. Mattel(was Disney, but I think they lost the license to the Princesses but not the Cars movies) & Hasbro(Star Wars Marvel) have both dug holes of bankruptcy before this making costly mistakes in the toy business. However possibly Mattel can ride this out if the fans of the original He-Man & She-Ra will keep supporting the classic lines but it remains to be seen. McFarlane toys could have found that out the hard way with Steven Universe merchandise plopping in the clearance or certain department store chains.
