This is why I stick to volumes/graphic novels. Everything in one place, usually the classics that have stood the test of time, and most of the time they have behind-the-scenes bonus stuff (early drafts, interviews, sketches, etc).
I also feel that comics code is kind of part of the reason why the industry is so behind, by the time the code really loosened up, it was too late, in the 80’s over 80% of the industry market share had been eaten up by DC and Marvel.
Comics will be fine as more and more new faces enter the industry. New heroes and stories that have no connection to the big two with real passion fueling them. The Marvel and dc era is over though. I exist in the comics creator space and one comic floppy can cost upwards of 10K+ to create prior to printing costs. This is probably why the big two are selling them for higher prices. Comics aren't pulling in hundreds of thousands of readers regularly and they need to recoup costs somehow. Industry veteran artists can charge around at minimum 300-500 per Page. This doesn't include writers, letterers, and colorist.
If im buying something that i want to keep. I expect all of it to be there. DC also has that werid inconsistencie with their tone that makes it hazardous to happily hand to kids. Like the old JLU cartoon had a tone. But the comic books they wrote for it was way darker and no in sync at all. Its really off putting cause the whiplash kinda feels like it spits innthe old show
That tonal inconsistency carried over into Young Justice. Season 1? Heck yeah, absolutely would show that to kids. Everything from Seasons 2-4? Heck no. It just devolves into increasingly edgy drivel. We really do need something like DC Nation for this day and age. Give us a couple of kid-friendly new shows and make that the gateway for new fans into the DC universe so that when they're older, they'll be hooked on what is to come.

Personally I think Marvel needs a gigantic Cinematic reboot to the point that we only need 1 universe and not be slash into 3 between Fox / Disney / Sony even if certain characters are own by there company's perspectively that having Doctor Doom will remake the MCU into the PMCU ((Prime Marvel Cinematic Universe))
I feel like a lot of the messages in later Marvel movies fall flat too due to poor execution. The God Butcher arc of Thor was really good until Nick Fury decides to lecture Thor that "Gorr was right and gods don't use their power to help people," as if Thor hasn't saved the universe at all or anything, but apparently that was enough for Thor to stop being worthy to lift Mjolnir.
@@mjtannertwins if you think that's weird, did you know someone decided to retcon Mjolnir's definition of worthiness from nobility and honor to bloodlust and desire to use the hammer as a weapon; implying Captain America had more bloodlust than Juggernaut or Dr. Doom?
Going from QR codes to Snowflake and Safe Space. That's quite the rant. I don't like the idea of QR codes for one reason. If at one point Marvel decided to stop the project, you run the chance being locked out of that panel or page. Like with games that have online gameplay going offline, Marvel could take the hidden content offline at any moment. This would mean that people should either download these pages if they want to keep their collection complete or buy the Trade Paper Back instead. This could lead to a fall in sales for single issues. One thing fans should do is keep an archive of these extra panels and pages so it will always be accessible, and that is actually the thing that Marvel says they're trying to avoid with this.
I used to buy comics a lot before covid. Now haven’t bought any since. It was a social gathering for me, talk about the book and theorize where the story would go. Now that my little social gathering was ended due to covid my hobbies had to shift and the unfortunately for comics I haven’t returned nothing is really worth reading and there is so much content I’m behind on I’d rather just drop it
QR codes like this work when there are secrets. Which work for mysteries. Superhero comics it should be included. The qr code would be nice to see behind the scenes commentary on the comic. Yet this seems like a unnecessary way to increase traffic on the website.
The last time comics were treated as collectibles it lead ted to the crash of the industry. Glad to see they are intent on repeating the mistakes of the past.
The QR codes especially seems to be a slap in thr face to speculators who like buying issues for their first appearances, which are some of the driving forces in comic collecting. The QR codes makes things difficult by how they determine first official appearnce via tue code of first printed one. It also reconfirms some preferring to just wait for the trade. What's sad is DC tried to do the more accessible comic route via thise $5 100 page Giants that were Wal Mart exclusives but even before covid they were practically hidden at our local Walmart.
Marvel has a bad habit of completely changing the characters in the comics when movies come out, so when fans of the novie come looking for the comic, the character they liktis a completely different person. Even now, they're killing Deadpool and replacing him with his daughter. Same with blade. Captain America, they replaced him with the falcon. Thor, thry replaced with Jane Foster. Hawkeye, they replaced with Kate Bishop. Wolverine, they replaced with X-23. You can find multitudes of these swaps. The even more annoying thing is, some of these replacement characters already had an identity and personality independent of this, but they shoehorned them into these roles.
Marvel might have just lost their entire comicbook collector buyer base with this QR code idea since no collector would ever bother getting a floppy that is incomplete and will forever be like that as 1) a QR code has an expiration date and 2) they decided the pages that shall be kept locked away include ones with important plot points and many characters' 1st appearance. It's a massive loss because Comicbook Collecters will buy a floppy regardless of its quality to keep their collection complete... Which it won't be anymore due to those missing pages in those From the Ashes relaunch books.
Its crazy to me that comics can still sell to this day, something like indie comics or great example, Invincible, definitely has fans buying comics to read and compare the show to the comics. Its just that Marvel make further mistakes
When the lame nerds who enjoyed silver and golden age comics started trying to break into the industry with their edgy (or flat out boring) 'deconstructions' of characters because they wanted their hobby to be seen as more 'serious' It was already over
Brevoort says people choosing not to use the codes won't miss out on much. His comment devalues the extra content and raises the question "Why bother using them if they aren't adding anything?".
Honestly the whole NEW New Warriors felt like that one Key & Peele Stan Lee sketch expect replace Stan w/ writers who've been clearly out of touch w/ current media/culture for a long time. I bet they don't even know how to draw feet given how creative the powers were
In racks before checkout at the grocery store is exactly where comics need to be if the industry is going to survive. I see comics going fully mail-order & digital in my lifetime and we'll have a "last comics store" akin to the last Blockbuster Video.
It would’ve have been awesome if They kept the identity of Doctor Dooms actor a secret and when the movie comes out and it’s revealed that Doom is actually Robert Downey Jr/evil Tony Stark from an alternate dimension, it would’ve been a massive plot twist that fans & audiences would talk about for years…
I personally think they're using QR codes to save on printing. Why print fifteen pages of a comic 300 times to send to comic stores when you can print fourteen pages instead and have the last page accessible to the Internet where the QR codes lead to the same image? It may not look like they're saving much but in the long run every penny counts especially during inflation.
I hadn't considered that; though it will likely bite them later on, as collectors will likely see an 'incomplete' book with a code to a webpage that may expire or become unavailable as less valuable than books with all the pages in them.
I was a regular reader of The New Warriors since its first issue. I was not excited for the 2020 characters. However, I intended to read the first few issues just to learn what "experimental internet gas" meant. The Internet doesn't have a physical form. There's science fantasy, and then there's science what the heck, dude? 🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦
Man, I completely forgot about that children of the atom run and the "nu warriors" ("You and america buddy") at least the former name will be more remembered for the great fighting game by capcom (rightfully so especially with the upcoming marvel collection, so glad that's being made) Honestly, yeah, hero comics could do better, mainly get better writers and editors for the most part. Feels like anything that isn't the big two seem to do better at least, prime example (pun not intended) would the the recent sky bound transformers run. Great story there, the characterization is also good, art is also fitting. Also heard the gi joe stuff and void rivals are pretty good as well. But yeah, marvel and dc need to fix their stuff. Can't keep afloat with their animated/cinematic mediums forever
I have never picked up a comic in my life, but I see that they currently have the same problem as other forms of media: Literally just bad writers. A lot of media nowadays is written by people who have no idea how to write a compelling story or have well thought out, rounded characters. It's a bad sign if the characters shows up and starts explaining everything about themselves (and the stuff they explain isn't anything useful or of interest). It reminds me of how children who are just getting into writing start listing likes and dislikes for their character and list things like "likes: tacos, jumping jacks, good people. Dislikes bad people, pain, spiders".
Then why don't us comic fans try to navigate, say, a manga fans wanting to try comics steer them towards places like image comics instead of DC or Marvel?
Any comparison to manga is flat, because of how they are distributed. Manga experience the boom right now that comics had before the 2 millennium a.k.a. 2000s. Additionally it is mostly a reader who is more accustomed to navigating in one or another environment to find a product for his interests. Manga fans are more vocal on the web than traditional comic fans.
Marvel is really just angry that they still have to make comics if the big wigs had their way you would just consume all the movie and shows and never question.
It's like this with video games too, these days even if you buy physical discs you still have to download the whole game plus updates as the discs only have the game key on them and not any of the files.
That Screentime character only wanted to join the New Warriors because he thought they were the team most likely to 'go viral'. So he's just after clout then? Great morals for a superhero to have....
Today the main point of a comic is thst it physical. Webcomics are also cool, but they are different. Consequently fans of comics read them today, because they have a physical copy of it, not digital on. They like it, because they don't need to go online to watch their comics or they don't like to watch on a screen.
For me the issue is the superhero gerne being the only genre that's discussed. I still do read some stuff from marvel and i really enjoy Hulk and Ultimate Black Panther. For me i think the horror genre is at its strongest its been in a good while. And Conan The Barbarian/ Savage Sword of Conan are the best comic coming out rn. For me i just wish that the independent comic scene got more attention as there are lot of fun and great books comic out there in my opinion.
I’ve been a comic fan since I was very young. I remember when it was more of a niche hobby that only nerds / geeks only liked but now since it seems like it’s gone more mainstream that it feels like people don’t understand how superheroes work nowadays it’s just really annoying that things can’t go back to the way things were instead of people adding to much modern politics and stuff. When I was growing up comics were one of my favorite things to have an escapism from reality. Now it’s seems like everything has to be in your face and political. In superhero comics it feels like there aren’t really fighting crime or super villains to thwart. It also seems everyone is becoming an Anti-Hero. It’s one of the main reasons when it comes to comics I mostly read Golden Age, Silver Age, Some Bronze Age and very rarely Modern Age.
From what I'm seeing on the sidelines when it comes to comics, there seems to be a weird conflict between making new heroes and churning out the regular cash cow superheroes. This, I feel, leads to a staggering lack of creativity where new and potentially unique heroes must eventually don the cowl and villains of the heroes who came before, as a way to both appeal to new blood and pander to the old audience. A potential solution to this might just be to have a separation between old and new heroes, creating a sandbox of sorts for new creatives to stretch their wings and find their niche, rather than taking old heroes and putting them into ill-fitting stories. It would also be good to toy with stories for all ages, as mentioned in the video. Sometimes people want a brutal battle between good and evil, and sometimes people want a story that's lighter and leans more toward villain of the week stories. Overall, adaptability and flexibility needs to be the name of comics if its going to survive as its own medium.
That comes from the fact that new heroes are risky whereas Superman and Batman are guaranteed to recoup costs and make a profit. I exists in the comics creative space and One single issue comic costs THOUSANDS to make and there's already a limited audience. A single comic page for just a well established artist can costs 500 dollars. Comic artists typically don't do their own colors so then hiring someone for colors can add an extra few hundred dollars. The you have to pay the writer, editor, letterer.etc etc prior to printing costs which will add thousands. It's not that DC/Marvel don't want to push new heroes but comics are expensive to make with a limited audience. It's just very risky
That's a fair point, which is why my proposed solution from the outside looking in (I have never worked comics in my life) is to have the old heroes as the tried and true formula while the new heroes can be a little more experimental. However, this also assumes older hero comics are selling well which, from what I've seen from isolated examples, can be a bit hit or miss. The Zeb Wells Spider-Man run, for example, made the rounds on Twitter for a long time due to what it did to Spidey, and it seemed to be widely disliked due to what it did to the character, despite the goodwill the name of Spider-Man has. At least from where I'm standing, old heroes can be just as unpredictable when it comes to selling potential, though I would wager that's more down to the writers handling the characters rather than the characters themselves. Due to that, I feel new heroes should still be a risk worth taking, if only to revive and cultivate the creative spark of these companies.
Americans really only have action superhero comics, do they? I'm glad I live here in Europe where we cover other genres, like comedy, western, adventure, fantasy, slice of life, mystery, magical girl, and many more.
We have them but they don't get as much attention. There's only one real comic distributor here and they only push hero comics. Anything that isn't from a well known publisher has to get their approval and if they don't the creators of their book will have to fight to get it to stores. The industry is difficult to get into if you don't have a Marvel, DC, or Image backing you. So you don't see new faces often in shops or comic stores.
Americans can enjoy other genres when they read manga and manhwa (Korean comics), because American comic book WRITERS keep EPIC FAILing at genres other than superhero comics. Those who were successful in other genres, retired DECADES ago.
If comics want a revival then they need to get rid of all the people using it for politics, they should be cheap fun that you can pass on to a friend. And the main trouble with getting into new comics is all of the events, it makes it so you can't really just jump into a random comic and have fun, instead you have to buy 20 different character's books to follow along 1 guy.
So I just saw a leak of the new snow white movie. (On youtube) Just a bit of a clip and I thought I have to tell you. Spoilers in case you need to find out for yourself. So the one thing I liked about snow white is that. When she ran from her evil stepmother she went into what she thought was an abandoned cottage. Where she meets the dwarves, in which as compensation for her staying with the dwarves. She offers to clean the house while they are at the mine. Now you'll hear it later I'm sure because it might buzz around a bit. Because it was on youtube. Yet now in the live action she's making the dwarves clean their own house. So she broke into their home, instead of offering compensation she's having them clean up the place for her. Before they go off to work in the mines.
People don't care about movie stars. After Endgame RDJ was in Dolittle which flopped. He's probably thinking at Marvel there is at least some guarantee of recognition
Besides getting 2000AD comics and graphic novels, I stopped buying comics in general back in late 2018, so as far as I'm concerned, comics are dead to me.... modern comics anyway! I'll still buy retro's!
When I read comics I don't read large series because they're too intimidating. Instead I read "I Hate Fairy Land" or one of Chip Zdarsky's works, tho I agree QR code is stupid af
Why are people even reading Marvel and DC anymore? Seriously I want an answer Also I’m still mad about not getting New Warriors Snowflake and Safe Space.
Manga does this better. Japan have their audiences and demographics. Also the books are numbered so someone knows the order in which to follow. That's how I got into them. No seperate series to buy to figure out what happens in another comic.
I know I'm crazy late, but I think one issue that goes overlooked is just how most good work for teenagers and kids accept their audience. A great example of accepting your audience is Chainsaw Man. To non Chainsaw fans the work is bizzare, over sexual, and weird. But to chainsaw man fans it speaks to real issues young people have regarding sexuality, growing up, grooming etc. It's pretty mature in that sense. But the series still engages the audience's issues or desires. I think that's why comics like Scott Pilgrim are timeless. If you're a kid or young man, Scott Pilgrim slaps hard. It is a comic that deals with deep topics and subject matters in a smart and beautiful manner. But it still is childish in it's presentation (7 evil exes! Hot girl randomly goes on date with you! Video game references brr). But that childishness is WHY it reaches it's audience. A more grounded look might be at Raina Telegemeier. Her books focus on young girls navigating things that THEY care about. Comics from Marvel and DC... they are so out of touch with reality. They don't speak to the spirit of people like they did. I mean, yes, Ultimate Spider-Man is literally a story that will hit emotionally with 30 somethings but it is an exception, not the rule. Good stories are honest. But when you're too worried about who you will offend, you often make dishonest stories. Stories that flatten reality, or never hit thr core of anyone's experience.
I dont read comics a lot but i do have some old marvel comics and seeing this in comics makes me wanna punch a wall also as a gen z this is insulting just make a good story damn it
Was hoping to hear more on the rdj thing, curious what you think about it overall. K agree it seems like nostalgia bait and desperate, but he does seem like a good actor for doom. Could be cool if done right but I'm hesitant for sure...
Comics have been trash for over a decade now- I remember watching hours of content from various people who were either in the industry or massive fans of it just ripping apart nearly every comic that came out from DC/Marvel for years before losing interest in even that
I have to respectfully disagree. Sure the majority of modern comics are rotten but there are a few gems if you look. I've really been enjoying Spider-Boy for example.

I also feel that comics code is kind of part of the reason why the industry is so behind, by the time the code really loosened up, it was too late, in the 80’s over 80% of the industry market share had been eaten up by DC and Marvel.
You know there’s an issue when I can buy OLD comics at a con for HALF the price of the comics currently releasing
"Internet gas" sounds like the anonymous hacker known as 4chan bombed one too many dodongos.
QR codes with extra scenes in comics??!, my goodness, this industry deserves to end.

Does anybody remember when Shonen Jump first came out here in the United States from Zis? that sucker was five bucks, but man did you get your money's worth from it, was a large manga/ anthology comic book
Good point. That was weird. Thor didn't deserve that.
@@mjtannertwins if you think that's weird, did you know someone decided to retcon Mjolnir's definition of worthiness from nobility and honor to bloodlust and desire to use the hammer as a weapon; implying Captain America had more bloodlust than Juggernaut or Dr. Doom?
@@stevensteviepryde5888 The Retcons we've been getting these past years have been terrible.
Now that my little social gathering was ended due to covid my hobbies had to shift and the unfortunately for comics I haven’t returned nothing is really worth reading and there is so much content I’m behind on I’d rather just drop it
Oh great. Marvel is not adding DLC to their comics. That won't backfire at all.
Not the real life dlc
When you only think about money, you end up burning the integrity along with it.
Screentime is just a worse version of Freakazoid, genuinely.
This is also the reason why i still collect back issues (70s-2010s comics)
Marvel might have just lost their entire comicbook collector buyer base with this QR code idea since no collector would ever bother getting a floppy that is incomplete and will forever be like that as 1) a QR code has an expiration date and 2) they decided the pages that shall be kept locked away include ones with important plot points and many characters' 1st appearance.
It's a massive loss because Comicbook Collecters will buy a floppy regardless of its quality to keep their collection complete... Which it won't be anymore due to those missing pages in those From the Ashes relaunch books.
X-men is something that is ment to be important to the FOREVER, not the now...that's why it's a TIMELESS CLASSIC, like all good stories.

It is easy to start and usually cheap too
Its crazy to me that comics can still sell to this day, something like indie comics or great example, Invincible, definitely has fans buying comics to read and compare the show to the comics. Its just that Marvel make further mistakes

I forgot about the fucking internet gas plot point. I think they would have better luck getting chatgpt to write their stories.

It would’ve have been awesome if They kept the identity of Doctor Dooms actor a secret and when the movie comes out and it’s revealed that Doom is actually Robert Downey Jr/evil Tony Stark from an alternate dimension, it would’ve been a massive plot twist that fans & audiences would talk about for years…
They want Captain America 4 and Agatha to not flop, so getting the positive buzz now
I personally think they're using QR codes to save on printing.
@Tail_sez Believe me I don't think this move was for the best interest of the consumers.
The new warriors never even released
This is why I stick to Dark Horse and Image.
Time for a second round of backlash and mediocrity for the new warriors.
I was a regular reader of The New Warriors since its first issue.
I was not excited for the 2020 characters.
However, I intended to read the first few issues just to learn what "experimental internet gas" meant.

Man, I completely forgot about that children of the atom run and the "nu warriors" ("You and america buddy") at least the former name will be more remembered for the great fighting game by capcom (rightfully so especially with the upcoming marvel collection, so glad that's being made)
Honestly, yeah, hero comics could do better, mainly get better writers and editors for the most part.
Let's face it. Adults dont know how to write teens.
To get a idea of how bad things are: there's a volume of x-23 where she tries to claim that the villain has a thing for piss 🤢
Part of the reason Manga is eating their lunch money is because they have a wider range of stories to tell than just "super hero"
Plus it doesn't pander/spite, the stories have consistent plotlines with no retcons, & they're not c*cking their mcs
Next thinhg you know the entire book is just a qr code
If the QR code took you to full length digital exclusive comic that you needed Marvel Unlimited to read, I could understand.
But a single page?
Yeah, just seems like needless inconvenience for the sake of making comics seem more 'up do date' to me.
I’ve been working on some comic heroes myself. And trust me, they’re better than these modern ones who love memes.
It's like this with video games too, these days even if you buy physical discs you still have to download the whole game plus updates as the discs only have the game key on them and not any of the files.
Not the New Warriors in the thumbnail, a comic that didn't even come out. And to be fair the QR codes are Marvel only.

Sounds like a Rick and Morty joke.
I think we should all stick indie or manga. At least some of the writers of those medium are actually trying to entertain their readers
I’m sticking to DC
Oh yeah, definitely feels like that at times.

We have them but they don't get as much attention. There's only one real comic distributor here and they only push hero comics.
Anything that isn't from a well known publisher has to get their approval and if they don't the creators of their book will have to fight to get it to stores.

Why are people even reading Marvel and DC anymore? Seriously I want an answer
Also I’m still mad about not getting New Warriors Snowflake and Safe Space.
