Video game movies seem to be at the stage superheroes movies were in the 2000’s, where different studios are trying different movies to see what sticks. Some were bangers (like Blade, X-Men and Spider-Man) while others weren’t that great (like the Fantastic Four movies or Ghost Rider, though I have a soft spot for them too). Perhaps things will eventually get to the MCU stage of getting the formula right and just keep doing that over and over, though that also loses the experimental phase that keeps things interesting even when they fail horribly.
I also have a soft spot for those old movie. Which yeah they are trying to figure out the superhero formula for video games, but unfortunately sonic basically did. Main ingredient: DON"T INSULT THE PRE-ESTABLISHED FANBASE.
I don’t know what’s scarier, the it’s right behind me, isn’t it?-ification of my favorite game franchises, or the possibly that live action Anime will be the next big thing if comic book movies keep following the trends of the comic book industry.
Lately I've been thinking a lot about the Captain Underpants movie. That was a really amazing adaptation because it honors the source material, builds on what translates well while tweaking what didn't, and even though it's aimed at kids it ends up being fun for all ages with humor that kids will laugh at more than adults AND jokes Adults would laugh at that kids wouldn't quite get. I really feel like we need more adaptation movies (and movies in general) with that level of care.
Honestly I think Minecraft Story Mode was the best story adaptation of Minecraft. I used to play that game over and over again in Spanish when I was trying to learn the language, and it was way more fun than most movies these days.
It was inevitable, however. Considering how big and profitable Minecraft is as a brand and how successful some recent video game movies such as Detective Pikachu, the Sonic movies, the Super Mario Bros. movie, and the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie were, of course a company like Warner Bros. would want to jump on the bandwagon and what better way to do it than to use Minecraft? I personally don’t mind the idea of a Minecraft movie, there’s a lot of potential to make an interesting Minecraft movie, but it all comes down to *how* it’s executed in the long run.
I remember first seeing this in one of my college classes. The professor put it on, and I was curious but the girl behind me was excited to see it. Only for both of us to be horrified and wonder what the fuck we just witnessed.
I would be more accepting of this, if it wasn't for the live action cast, especially Jack Black as Steve. It's like they just gave him a blue shirt and told him that he's gonna be Steve, didn't even bothered to shave
I absolutely agree with the Mario Movie DK. One of my few complaints in that movie was how DK acted towards Mario. Being a bit reckless and arrogant I get with DK. Yet how he kept mocking Mario after he won that fight. Even if Mario used power ups, which were there just so it would be an even match. Then when they should've had a nice bonding moment after Mario saved DK and they both have similar issues with their dads. DK just went and used what was a nice moment to once again insult Mario. Which isn't a surprise to me as to why DK was acting like this, because Seth Rogan thought it would be funny if DK insulted Mario..
To be fair, they're never really depicted in the games as having anything other than an antagonistic relationship. I remember they made piece in Mario and Donkey Kong minis on the move, but that was at the end of the game.
Seth was probably sour that he didn't get to voice Mario. Seth even admitted to not caring enough and that he was hired for HIS voice, so he just did HIS voice. Dude has been up his own keister for over a decade now. He cares more about what's going to get him social clout, hence why he stopped doing actual comedy movies and does lame woke parodies now. Part of me thinks they got dirt on him and so he just does what his california elites want him to do. Hence why he actually defended the crime in LA.
@@Zarreth Dude posted about how it's not a big deal about someone breaking into their vehicles to steal. Because it happened to him 15 times. I still hated how in the chip and dale movie they gave a tribute to all the characters he voiced and they all sound the same. Then yes we had Santa Inc.
6:06 I knew salary differences between actors in Hollywood movies existed but I guess I underestimated just how much. Like Tails was easily the best performace in the Sonic 2 movie, considering she's the current voice actress for Tails in general, and also she's a freaking voice actress and not an expensive actor hired mostly from name recognition.
Some games can't be adopted into a movie, because they are based around gameplay process which isn't possible to recreate in reactive medium. For instance StarCraft can be adopted into a movie, becase the story is important to the game and story line isn't dependent on players input, as well as choices to choose from are limited for story to progress in predefined direction. Whereas Civilisation series or Total War series can't be adopted into a movie, becase they work as long as player makes an input in the game. Without players activity game story doesn't progress anywhere and strory line in these games is decided by player, not by game designers.
Honestly I can't imagine them fixing much of if any entities shown. Like pretty sure fixing Sonic in the first movie ended with the studio that fixed him going under
Mojang has already worked with Element multiple times before, they easily could’ve asked them to animate the movie, they even said on Twitter that they’d have loved to.
As sad as it is, our best hope is that a fan animates the whole movie for their, and our, love of Minecraft like the trailer was. But that is both asking too much, and unfair to the artist who would attempt that. Though there have been fan-projects of that scale before. I remember a time where they did a vote for remake of star wars a new hope, where you could vote for a 4 second clips of fan videos to be the next part of the movie.
it's really wild to see two movie's first trailers get released within a week of each other. one being given all the hype in the world, the other all the fear in the world. also, i gotta say; starting a video about the bad video game movies with footage from the doom film sent me shivers up my spine... (ok, maybe i'm exaggerating a little bit.)
I don't like Minecraft and even I feel insulted by this trailer. I feel so bad for the fans of the game, some of them are my friends and I just want them to have a good movie.
0:37 I would say Game of Thrones. Because fantasy tv show got popular than to it. Like Syfy Magicians. And that fantasy show from MTV. Rings of power and Willow 2023 are inferior fantasy shows. 2:50 *Thank You!* I still hear the Seth Rogen laugh from DK. 3:27 I saw a tweet use The Sheep’s face and put it on Ugly Sonic’s head. And it is not even Halloween yet. 4:38 there are people apologizing to the telltale version of Minecraft. 5:04 And that tweet is getting roasted. Someone made a quote tweet by using a clip from Turning Red(it was Mei meeting a child version of her mom) to criticize the movie is only for kids excuse. They use also the metaphors as well. There another tweet. Where someone criticize the movie by saying are you f’ing kidding me. And the tweet they post just a picture of Danielle Brooks from the beginning trailer. What did Danielle Brooks do exactly? That tweet radiates that bad energy as A.s.k Air. Sigh… the internet create such brain rot individuals. Good thing the person who posted that Tweet of Danielle Brook is getting roasted as well. And Rightfully So. My thoughts on trailer. I don’t have any attachment to Minecraft. So I am not interested in it.
I hope the characters who get Isekai'd know where tehy are, or figure it our quickly. Everyone knows what Minecraft is to some extenct, or at least anyone who might go and see the film will. Having the "What is this weird and mysterious place" bit is redundant. The same way the MCU didn't bother spending much time going over Spiderman's origin story because what would be the point in repeating it. They could also have done an adaptation of the Minecraft Novels instead. I've never read them but they apparantly aren't all that bad, from what I've seen from people online.
tbh this is kinda like what happen when they first show The sonic movie and sonic old design then they went back and fixed it but im pretty sure we wont see that happen with this
They could have adapted the Minecraft book trilogy (Minecraft: The Island, Minecraft: The Mountain and Minecraft: The Village) by Max Brooks. But instead they chose to make whatever this is.
It seems WAAAAYYYY To close to Jumanji's plot, and a lot of people have noticed that too. Why I don't hate the idea for that, in a game franchise about creativity and imagination- that's the best plot they could come up with? Granted we don't know the plot- but the fact we can tell the general direction of where this movie is headed storywise even with this short, bare bones trailer says a lot...
It would’ve been better if the movie was animated instead. But if they really wanted to include live-action, they should have it be separated from the Minecraft world itself. Have the characters start out as real-life people from the mundane human world at the beginning but once they’re transported to the Minecraft world, they are transformed into the blocky Minecraft characters to match the world’s environment and aesthetic. This would also allow for Steve to keep his original appearance instead of him just being Jack Black in a blue t-shirt. That way most of the movie can be animated while also having some live-action scenes that take place outside of the Minecraft world. Having characters be transformed into a different appearance when they enter into another world is a trope known as Fisher Kingdom according to TV Tropes. But the example I used is known as the “physical warping” version.
it feels like a cash grab without a doubt. wars over who playing steve aside, the plot doesn't appear to make sense if you've played basic minecraft enough, and i question if they'll explain how Piglins and Ghasts are raiding the overworld when... y'know.. Illagers already do that. with on world bases.
When I saw the trailer at first it just felt slightly off. I was interested but something just didn't fit. And then you show the clip starting at 4:42 and I realized it felt off b/c it should have been the fan version rather than the real people looking strange version.
Maybe if they made all the creatures…less square, sure. I’m still 100% gonna watch it to laugh at it but we’ll see. Ooh! What if like, they were realistic in the beginning but when they went into portal they became Minecraft characters and stuff!
Yeah you had it right. Honestly if the characters were VAs instead of themselves I’d cringe a lot less. Also had no idea they were doing Sonic that bad. ESPECIALLY COLLEEN. WTH
As a non minecraft fan the world looks fine to me the problem I have is with the live action The moment they get into the minecraft world they should be 3D.
The Minecraft movie just screamed Jumanji ripoff to me personally. I've already decided to skip it, which is the opposite effect a movie trailer should have.
lol, they should just make a full an hour and a half long version of that one Minecraft musical with the king and his fallen kingdom or, i dunno, just make an animated movie with an actual budget.
If anything, I. Definitely agree, like Jack Black is a good actor. Do not get me wrong, but I just. Don't see him as Steven and yeah I think it would have been better if it was animated like hello Minecraft animation Like that is a huge opportunity for a movie like this and I know that many minecraft fans are really dying to see the Minecraft movie for soo long and Honestly This is a disappointment and I hope it does get fixed you know
Colleen at least is an actual voice actress... God it would be GREAT if us voice actors could get paid like that. We wouldn't have to rely on other odd jobs and constant convention signings.
Jack Black is the king of video game movies. He's in Minecraft, Super Mario Bros, Boarderlands, and Jumanji: The Next Level (which isn't a direct video game adaption, but still about a video game).
I saw it and went "Why wasn't this fully animated?" and "Oh no, are they doing Jumanji again?" Not to mention the wardrobing is messed up and yeah... I'm not upset Jack Black is in this, I just wish he was voice acting. This is him in a blue shirt playing himself. They did the same thing with Monster Hunter; making it an Isekai. I get that there's a lot to that world, but the simplest route would've been 'my family killed by monsters, I was saved by a hunter, now I want to honor my hero and find the creature that did it!' - tHat's actually not far from the plot of the first MH game I played now that I think about it. There is so much potential for creativity in Minecraft. All this trailer is making me want to do is rewatch the "Fallen Kingdom" series of Minecraft music videos. It already has a much better story, I'm 100% serious.
"generic route because ___ popular and therefore will automatically make money no matter what," is the sentiment in all these films. Just add a lot of fan service and fun hi-jinks over the generic narrative and all is good. And a film being just fun is not necessarily a bad thing. We sometimes just needs a fun film. Though, there is one thing that separates this one from the rest: there seems to be no animated main character! Are you kidding me? The movie is missing the essential element in these kind of films! Steve should have been animated. Steve should have been the Sonic, or the Pikachu, or the Roger Rabbit of this movie. The characters that bridges the animated and the live action parts together. These characters is what makes things work with these hybrids. Even The Smurfs film understand this. I could only hope that they actually have another character that take this role but somehow not presented in the trailer.
I have no horse in this race so I guess I don't really care if there is or isn't a Minecraft movie. I do think it looked at least better than I imagined, but it's still not great and I blame the live action being inserted for that. This would have been fine fully animated and could then easily translate into a TV series if the success warranted it. I am just beyond tired of studios making a $100+ million dollar movie that, at best, is just meh. This might just have low enough of a budget to make back the $300 million it needs to be considered a success, but it will probably fail domestically and pick up the slack overseas. For example, 'Godzilla Minus One' (2023) grossed $115 million and was pretty evenly split making half of that domestic and the other half internationally. It also did it on a $10 million budget which would mean it made back 1150% of the money put into it. I just feel like Hollywood needs to finally wake up to the fact that shoving more money into a movie doesn't A. make it a better movie to watch, and B. make it more profitable.
this is the start of MCU'fied of video adaptation since they announced Slime Rancher last year, so I'm worried it might end up looking uncanny just for kids' excuse The only interesting Video Game adaptation that is worth talking with more conserm is Legend of Zelda because they go for live-action instead of animated like most Zelda fans like myself wanted. The only live-action MCU-find video game adaptation that is least considering is Portal live action is perfect for closterfobic feal and manages to do robots justice with their witty, dark humor like Glados.
As a general rule, making potential media consumers feel unwelcome is not a good way to make your audience want to consume your media. For some reason, some parts of Hollywood believe this to be a viable business strategy.
I never played Minecraft but this is the most corporate board made movie if there ever was one. Warner bros may be WBD now but even Zazlav can't fix the stupid that is their Board of Directors.
Concerned is one word for it. But right now, I'm deathly afraid of it. Why put live characters in instead of VAs? It's like... so out of place. I miss Jessie and his crew. I might go back and play that whole series all over again just for funsies.
I thought a minecraft movie would be more like a horror movie. Steve, the only survivor of the monster attack on his village, must get through a network of mines and caves to another, avoiding creepers, dead miners and endermans.
This movie should be either fully animated (preferably in the "mojang trailer style") OR fully live-action, realistic (turning Minecraft creatures and objects into "real life" versions) & starring Jason Momoa as Steve. Nothing in between can really work out. No middle ground. And they ofc went for the worst option... Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle 2.0
@TheDestroyerG7X Well, since the game itself is 3D it would be more reasonable to make the movie 3D as well. Plus, pretty much no american studio today would use their resources for a 2D movie. But sure, it could be 2D - would be even better, since 2D animation is one of the best mediums
“It’s a kids movie, not for adults. You’re not the target audience.” There’s a scene in Pinocchio where a boy gets turned into a donkey and was screaming for his mom. Let’s also not forget in Tarzan, Clayton’s death was him getting hanged by jungle veins that you can actually see his body hanging when Tarzan looked at him. Yes these movies target audience’s are kids but there’s some pretty serious dark things that can happen in those movies

@@samueltitone5683Depends on how they do it. One piece live action so far is the best one and we have to see how season 2 holds up.
I still don’t understand why we need a minecraft movie it seems so unnecessary in my opinion
And you are absolutely right!
@@guilherme5094 indeed
Honestly I think Minecraft Story Mode was the best story adaptation of Minecraft. I used to play that game over and over again in Spanish when I was trying to learn the language, and it was way more fun than most movies these days.
@@Tail_sez I didn’t know that game has a story because that sounds interesting.
1:17 why do the three in the foreground have so long shadows while the boy hasnt one
I remember first seeing this in one of my college classes. The professor put it on, and I was curious but the girl behind me was excited to see it.
Only for both of us to be horrified and wonder what the fuck we just witnessed.
I really love love love your happy sprite. It makes me happy.
SOME ??!!?
I have a Million and 400 concerns , haha
Uncharted movie, Mortal Kombat 2021, Borderlands movie, Minecraft movie. Live-action video game adaptation slops never went away, baby!
I would be more accepting of this, if it wasn't for the live action cast, especially Jack Black as Steve. It's like they just gave him a blue shirt and told him that he's gonna be Steve, didn't even bothered to shave
5:19 didn’t people also, made a argument that is made for kids. Therefore criticism of characters being too one note and shouldn’t have deeper theme.
@@Ergeniz but it's still Donkey Kong insulting Mario, because Seth Rogan wanted him to.
6:06
I knew salary differences between actors in Hollywood movies existed but I guess I underestimated just how much.
Like Tails was easily the best performace in the Sonic 2 movie, considering she's the current voice actress for Tails in general, and also she's a freaking voice actress and not an expensive actor hired mostly from name recognition.
5:35 That's a pretty cute frame of your avatar right there
I think I'm just gonna go watch How to Train Your Dragon again.
Don't worry, the creator of Minecraft praised the trailer. I'm not kidding. I also got ideas for the bendy movie.
3:20 CREEPER… AW MAN!
This quote is from a Minecraft Song Called Revenge by CaptainSparklez
That actually got me into Minecraft lol
I saw that trailer and thought "we are SO BACK - back to video game movie curse"
Bro I wonder how bad the villagers will look in this movie
Honestly I can't imagine them fixing much of if any entities shown.
Like pretty sure fixing Sonic in the first movie ended with the studio that fixed him going under
Man, Bedknobs & Broomsticks from 1971 was a better hybrid between live action/animated than this 😂
Mojang has already worked with Element multiple times before, they easily could’ve asked them to animate the movie, they even said on Twitter that they’d have loved to.
5:45 OH MY LORD, THIS IS BETTER! Though, it needs a few more tweaks here and there, but it's good 🤩
Something tells me this movie is going to make Borderlands look like the Godfather.
I think they should have made the animation and character designs look like the one's in Minecraft story mode
Tho I'm still hyped amazing video btw.👍💯
Recognisable stars ? There's only one.
Let's be fair, I've heard and knew about Minecraft since my middle school years. But it's so... surreal.
Where someone criticize the movie by saying
are you f’ing kidding me.
Conceening the Sonic 3 movie, they should have gotten an actual voice actor in Keanu Reeve's place instead.
I've never read them but they apparantly aren't all that bad, from what I've seen from people online.
tbh this is kinda like what happen when they first show The sonic movie and sonic old design then they went back and fixed it but im pretty sure we wont see that happen with this
I miss detective Pikachu
Goddam it was too forgotten about it MADE GAME MOVIES POSSIBLE IT WAS THE FIRST great one
They could have adapted the Minecraft book trilogy (Minecraft: The Island, Minecraft: The Mountain and Minecraft: The Village) by Max Brooks. But instead they chose to make whatever this is.
I see 1 shot with the live actors with the mincraft background... and that's all I need yo know it's gonna suck
It seems WAAAAYYYY To close to Jumanji's plot, and a lot of people have noticed that too.
Why I don't hate the idea for that, in a game franchise about creativity and imagination- that's the best plot
they could come up with? Granted we don't know the plot- but the fact we can tell the general direction of where this movie
is headed storywise even with this short, bare bones trailer says a lot...
Your avatar is nice.
WTH
The trailer makes me think of "Shorts" (2009).
If I wanted to see a Minecraft movie I just watch story mode always I can enjoy some adorable moments ❤️
As a non minecraft fan the world looks fine to me the problem I have is with the live action
The moment they get into the minecraft world they should be 3D.
a review of a movie that hasn’t come out yet. We’re hanging. On. Every. Word.
The Minecraft movie just screamed Jumanji ripoff to me personally. I've already decided to skip it, which is the opposite effect a movie trailer should have.
The creeper is supposed to be covered in grass
This should have been animated, it would look much better and feel right
lol, they should just make a full an hour and a half long version of that one Minecraft musical with the king and his fallen kingdom
or, i dunno, just make an animated movie with an actual budget.
still waiting for the solitaire movie
I thought Carry claimed he wouldn't be returning as Robotnik in the third movie?
Jack Black is the king of video game movies. He's in Minecraft, Super Mario Bros, Boarderlands, and Jumanji: The Next Level (which isn't a direct video game adaption, but still about a video game).
I'd still think they should have done a fully animated Minecraft movie have it in CGI and have the heart of The LEGO Movie
To be fair I think before the movie came out Seth Rogan literally said he just read the lines and that was it
get ready for the copyright claim
Neebs gaming has 80 some episodes of minecraft hilarity. No need for a minecraft movie. Neebs Gaming's show is all you'll ever need
I just feel like Hollywood needs to finally wake up to the fact that shoving more money into a movie doesn't A. make it a better movie to watch, and B. make it more profitable.
this is the start of MCU'fied of video adaptation since they announced Slime Rancher last year, so I'm worried it might end up looking uncanny just for kids' excuse
The only interesting Video Game adaptation that is worth talking with more conserm is Legend of Zelda because they go for live-action instead of animated like most Zelda fans like myself wanted.
The only live-action MCU-find video game adaptation that is least considering is Portal live action is perfect for closterfobic feal and manages to do robots justice with their witty, dark humor like Glados.
WB is a master of wasting money and this is no difference!
Damn i missed this voice! Lol.
I thought a minecraft movie would be more like a horror movie. Steve, the only survivor of the monster attack on his village, must get through a network of mines and caves to another, avoiding creepers, dead miners and endermans.
Id rather watch cows shit in the field than go out and see this movie
I'd be concerned if you weren't concerned.
Who needs this movie when Alan Becker exists.
“It’s a kids movie, not for adults. You’re not the target audience.”
There’s a scene in Pinocchio where a boy gets turned into a donkey and was screaming for his mom. Let’s also not forget in Tarzan, Clayton’s death was him getting hanged by jungle veins that you can actually see his body hanging when Tarzan looked at him. Yes these movies target audience’s are kids but there’s some pretty serious dark things that can happen in those movies
I would say give up hope, this is Microsoft and Warner, two companies who really don't care about public outcry, try if you want, I just don't see it
This design choice is the reason I didn’t watch Wreck It Ralph. They chose a game that has a unique design, and instead of embracing it. They try to “modernize” or “make them look more cinematic” in the film. It would have looked far more visually interesting.
Dang, I got a notification in less than 24 hours. Did they change something? 🤔😹
