Thing is, it’s all about versatility. I have people asking for vertical videos because the marketing opps on IG and TikTok are incredible. So why not? I just bring my narrative and commercial skill set to what they need. Doesn’t make me less of a filmmaker, it’s just time and place - another tool in the kit that adds to versatility.
The video landscape is changing so quickly. This time a couple of years ago I would laugh at the idea of rigging a camera for vertical content, but here I am today at a six figure job exclusively shooting vertically. I don't love it and really enjoy the one or two shoots a year when I get to shoot horizontally again, but it's where we're at and where the money's being spent so let's ride this wave, baby.
Mobile is here to stay I think, because most people will consume snack content while being on their mobile but it'll be more than happy to shoot horizontal again 😄
@@KofiYeboah Yeah, it will definitely be both eventually, for sure. Which for creators is not a bad thing. I haven't been working on a lot of projects, so I'm still horizontal. My thing is, if viewers can turn their phones sideways, what's wrong with their wrists???? 😂😂😂😂😂 But seriously, I'm looking forward to it, so I can get on platforms like TikTok and other vertical friendly outfits
I finally got my fx6 a week ago and I literally was about to film a TH-cam short with this. Walked out the door and saw this notification for this video and am watching this before I head out lol On a side note I can’t wait to head out and see how this camera does for my cave videos
Thank you for this video bro, new subscriber. Purchased nearly everything you listed because I've been wanting to shoot vertical with my Fx6. Completely agree that vertical is the way of the future and should only earn more business!
A bit frustrated that I got the Tiffen Glimmerglass 82mm 1/8 and it doesn’t fit my lens.. I guess that’s because it’s not the exact lens you recommended using.. I thought since my lens is a Sony lens that it would still work, but wrong.
@Kofi When it comes to tripods, when you said you usually go for the cheaper ones, first thought that came to me was to go after a more expensive one. Then you mentioned the Manfrotto. I have one and I love it. One thing I learned about tripods, is that the more expensive ones like Manfrotto are heavier, steadier and more sturdy. Which makes it nice with your footage because it makes it more steady, even if you pan swivel or may brush up against it; it recovers quicker with less shake than the cheaper tripods. And it's not so easy to topple over. Great content as usual!!! 👍🏾🎥🏆
hey Kofi, I am interested in purchasing a camera cage for my Sony FX6 and I have come across two options: the Vertical Mounting Kit and the Advanced Kit. Could you please clarify if the Vertical Mounting Kit includes all the features and functionalities of the Advanced Kit, in addition to the vertical mounting capabilities? Or would I need to purchase both kits separately to access all the features offered by each?
Super usefull info! Last weekend I shot vertical for the first time on my FX6. But I'm having some trouble in post. Footage doesn't get recognized as being shot vertical as it does with the FX3. That means all footage is sideways and spotting clips absolutely kills my neck. What's your workflow for this?
Nice video man. I've been using the Manfrotto 501 for a few years now and find it a bit heavy and cumbersome. With the release of the new one-touch carbon fibre tripods are you going to change?
Well done! This looks great! You had me worried initially about that side mounting monitor hahaha. I'm going to guess you MIGHT have a vertical rig for the FX30 as well? haha
Like the idea, but just use the rule of third grid and 4K is already an overkill for tik-tok/IG/etc that barely use 1080p. It's still over 1080p when cropped in. Tried it last time and it was a 100% accurate reference (the rule of 3rd grid).
Absolutely, this videos moreso geared to people who only have the one fx6 and might need to do both, also some clients pay money like that to have it on a pro camera honestly lol
@@KofiYeboah Agree with you. I would say though shooting horizontally is great for framing if needed, shooting vertically give way more zooming in power when shooting in 4K. I once been asked by a client to shoot vertically so had the NATO clamp top handle put on the side. The client feels like you know your stuff when you show much more care about that specific task like shooting vertically vs shooting horizontally and trying to convince him/her that you have even more pixels than 1080p horizontal (2160x1280p when using the middle part of the rule of third grid).
We got the FX6 months ago and we use it almost daily now; I'm really think if we should invest more for a B cam but either buy another FX6 or FX9 or just say fuck it and invest into a sony venice 2
at 06:39 you use a grip at the right side, why not show it in the video? Thats the only thing thats missing in this rig haha, this looks hard to hold without one.
Almost wonder if it'd be easier (maybe not cheaper) to just have a fx30 rigged up in a vertical format so you didn't have to switch between setups. Or a used A7s3 or something similar where you aren't fighting the form factor so much.
Why would you need vertical 4K for social media? All you need to do is create 9x16 marks on your screen to be able to frame and crop the 4K footage into 1080p in post.
You could , or you can you can use a dedicated setup, you’re free to do either and you don’t HAVE to do this, also if you want to use as much resolution as possible without chopping the sides off, that’s also fine
The main issue with that is several technical issues, like lens compression, etc., that make the image feel and look cropped compared to shooting through the lens vertically.
@@itsdanielcurran Do you mind listing the others or is it just lens compression? I wouldn't call lens compression an issue... After cropping it'll look like you used a telephoto lens and not a wide lens, that's all. So even if you're on an ultra wide, your footage will look around 35mm. And telephoto footage generally looks better, with less distortion. I understand that sometimes you want that distortion to achieve a look, but when it comes to facial and body proportions, telephoto is generally preferred.
@@lukastemberger For lens compression specifically, you see more compression at the top and bottom but not the same on the sides which results in the imaging feeling cut off. It's obviously not apparent to the non-trained eye but the feeling will still translate. All things that I can think of are altered because cropping is optical characteristics, depth of field, perspective, and framing. The way you shoot is also completely different (Position from camera to talent, lens, angles). When you don't see the exact outcome it's hard to produce the same quality image of one that was shot internally vertical. I produce or DP almost exclusively for Marriott. I am constantly having to play that balance game of shooting for their branded website and TV (Horizontal deliverables) vs. organic and paid online ads (Vertical) The finished result of shooting horizontal to crop in my experience will never be at the same caliber of shooting vertically. Obviously when time and money is involved there is always a compromise but from my limited knowledge this is the opinion I've came too.

I have the FE 4/24-105 G, looks like it’s 77mm so if I get the 77-82 step up lens piece it should work, correct?
I apologize, I’m just slow in the head lmao got it figured out once I realized each individual ring in the step up stacks came apart 😅

Thanks for walking us through. It’d be great if Sony would allow for open gate filming and the crop would be more forgiving.

So that super comfortable side handle we have to toss out the door when we shoot vertical? I wish there was a way to remount that!
Same! One day aha
Adapt and overcome. 🎉

I shot the autoshow with my fx3 and client wanted vertical. This us the new reality
