So for the longest time, I thought I'd never played this game so this song was off limits until I picked it up, then I watched a speed run of it and realized that the reason this song was so nostalgic was that I DID play it! Then I had to decide if I'd make Super Mario RPG a medley for year 3 and ultimately decided against it because the medley would have to have this song but I really wanted to give it it's own video since there's so much to the arrangement. In retrospect there really isn't much to it, it's just so geniously composed that you can listen to it a million times without it draining on you. I'm glad I could finally take this one on!
I decided to use the PRS in this video again since the song was in C# minor, it game me the option to hit the VI chord as a low A power chord which was helpful. I saw a lot of comments saying they like the explorer better and don't get me wrong, so do I, but know that the reasoning behind the choice of guitars a use is based on numerous things. I've been having a few breakthroughs with mixing lately! I'm starting to really be able to bring out the bass after countless comments that I need to 'turn it up'. I would like to quickly address that I've seen that comment on numerous videos by home recording artists and I have to assert that anybody who thinks that the solution to hearing bass in a mix better is to just turn it up has probably never done this sort of thing themselves. Getting an instrument to be heard better does not involve simply 'turning it up' as much as carefully applying EQ on tracks to create head room for that instrument when dealing with multi-track recording. It's something that takes a lot of practice and I'm tired of hearing about comments like these because it makes younger more inexperienced mixers begin to doubt themselves thinking that they can't do something as easy as 'turning it up'. Okay, end rant. Hope the bass sounds good. Haha!

I've had a retro gaming channel in the works for some time now. I've been giving my intro music a Lot of thought and I've been having so much trouble coming to any conclusions. I was wanting to come up with an original chip tune-sounding piece. But then this jumped out at me. Mario RPG is my absolute favorite game on any system. I have to ask. I completely forgot somehow, but this is one of your more memorable covers by far imo! You did so much in the arrangement in such a short time and it's just perfect. I really loved the little bass solo, if you want to call it that.

Picture this for a geno smash reveal:

Multiple ways. It's on Wii U virtual console, if by chance you have a SNES laying around you could get it. I think it's on SNES classic. Or just get an emulator on PC. I recommend SNESX.

I knew I had heard this song but I definitely haven't played Super Mario RPG. Then I realised this is one of the tracks used in Super Mario Star Road! Great cover as usual
A Mario RPG medley could be definitely be good. I was going to say there aren't really enough memorable tracks, then I looked up the OST. There are dozens and dozens of songs, all of which I instantly start humming along with. My recommendations would be: The Road is Full of Danger, Fight Against Monsters, The Road is Still Full of Danger, Fight Against a Somewhat Stronger Monster, Fight Against an Armed Boss, Beware the Forests' Mushrooms (but u already did it), My Name's Bukki, and Fight Against Culex (actually a remixed battle theme from FF, but w/e). As a side note, I always liked the music from SMRPG and now I know why. Koji Kondo and Nobuo Uematsu both helped compose the soundtrack
Hell, just do Weapons Factory, Slope, a few boss battle themes, and Smithy's first boss fight and you've got a killer medley.

Killer arrangement on the song man. Where do you get inspiration for your arrangements? They all sound so original from even between all of your videos. I'd think one would run out of ideas after a while!
I was going to say that the bottom end on this was really solid compared to a lot of stuff you've done. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to harp on what you've done so far. I've enjoyed watching everything you've done. I just like my bottom ends to be tight! No pun intended.
You are 100% correct on mixing as well. Turning it up usually isn't a solution. It was one of the earliest things I learned when I started getting in to audio. Admittedly, I've pretty much just mixed Bluegrass and Country which I would imagine wouldn't be as complicated of a mix as what you do.
Keep up the outstanding work! I always look forward to the next video!
