for real, i immediately thought that too if they wanted to use the dinosauria sounding names they couldve made there own latin names but i guess google translate is too hard
My reasoning as to why writers decide to create such unlikable protagonists is because they probably look at characters like Kratos and think: “Hey, this guy’s an absolute asshole and people love him for it! Let’s make our own protag like that!” But they completely miss the point. We don’t love Kratos from God of War because he’s objectively a bad person, it’s because of who he is as a character and his journey that led him to become the way he is. The whole of God of War 1 has us uncovering Kratos’ origins: why he’s called the Ghost of Sparta, why his skin is pure white, why he hates Ares so much, where he got the Blades of Chaos from, why he’s both feared and hated, etc. If you give your character a compelling reason for being unlikable, the players will come to empathize with your character. Otherwise, you’ll wind up with someone like her who’s just an asshole for the sake of being an asshole.
I remember Forspoken's reveal trailer. It had no dialogue, just Frey running without saying a word, looking cool with a cloak hiding her face. It definitely set an intriguing tone.
The game had potential, the magic looks cool and fun to traverse with in the world, but once I saw the battles and dialogue you know all the potential this game had was thrown into the toilet
Square Enix attempts to employ diversity in their main character design: a “mixed race” female character portrayed as a homeless inner city criminal who values her sneakers above all else, who doesn’t know who her parents are, and who is rude and disrespectful to every character with whom she interacts, including the actual player.
If you were to ask me what Forspoken's biggest problem is, it would be the price. $70 does set some high expectations, if it sold for $15-$30 range then more folk would probably give it more positive or at lest neutral reviews of it. but that is my thoughts on it.

Forspoken made me appreciate Tales of the abyss protagonist luke fon fabre's character development and the best part is that Dev's wanted you to hate him in act 1. But act 2 and onwards he's one of the most well-written protagonists of the entire tale series or even video games.

@@blueflare3848 My guess would be that when looking for a quick and easy way to write "strong woman", writers fall back into the same things that we used for "strong men" in the 80's and 90's--brooding, antisocial, cracking one-liners. There’s just so much potential this game could have had. *spoilers for one of the endings but I doubt anyone cares* They should have made a scene or a feature in the game where you can take pictures with the NPCs with your phone and make memories (You know, if the NPCs were memorable). I tried playing the game myself and wanted to give it a fair shot but the wave of elation that passed over me when I didn't have Wi-Fi for a while and couldn't play the game told me everything I needed to know.
The worst part is that they can patch the technical problems with this game; they can even touch up the graphics in later patches. But the dialog is done, the story is done, and you cant patch that; well, I guess you can, but...
Joss Whedon ruined humor. He used Bathos a lot on his TV shows like Buffy, Angel and Firefly. He made it part of his style. And then when he made Avengers he used it there too, and it became one of the biggest movies ever. And as a result the rest of the MCU followed suit and it was inferior, but still successful, but as the MCU got bigger and Bigger, and more entertainment outlets desperately tried to become more like it, the use of Bathos got worse and worse. And now here we are.
The thing about BtVS was, people knew when to stop quipping, and the situation (high school kids having weird supernatural stuff happen to them every week) believably lent itself to the characters using humour to cope with the high stakes and danger they faced. When it hit plot points like Angel's betrayal, Joyce dying or Faith killing a bystander, the show wasn't tripping over itself with jokes, it let the serious moments be serious. Like a lot of things, that formula worked in its original context, and then got copied by people who just figured "characters quipping all the time makes them cool and funny" was universally applicable to every character and setting, and what the Kids These Days were into. Kind of like how Alan Moore wrote the classic that was "Watchmen" and then accidentally started the decade-long trend for dark screwed-up superheroes, written with little or none of his skill.
I think the biggest reason that this game falls flat is the protagonist. The main character in a game is the lens that you experience the world with, so when Frey clearly doesn’t care about the plot, the player has no reason to either. This ruins any immersion while simultaneously making the protagonist really unlikeable.
8:22 Im like fairly fucking certain that bear noise they're using has to be part of a generic sound pack, i swear i've heard that same bear sound in skyrim
5:37 REALLY with that cloak? Like, I'd been an Assassins Creed fan until Origins, and even I get how silly it is that someone covered in weapons can just vanish into crowds. But at least they were wearing colors that people actually wore at the time. And not drawing attention to themselves by openly stealing while loudly talking to themselves.
It says a lot that on OneyPlays they kept jokingly saying the absolute shittiest dialogue they could come up with only to immediately have the game say that exact dialogue over and over.
Why does every other npc in the fantasy world have a different accent, now that I notice it? In the span of like 5 minutes you stumble across flamboyant Italian, Cockney English and Midwestern US within a single city block. In a town that isn't even on Earth. At least settle on one for the setting if you can't create a new one lmao
The "rgb cloak" doesnt look bad It does look out of place though If i saw a robot wearing something like this in a sci fi setting it would be kinda cool but not a girl in a middle ages fantasy setting
Final Fantasy has a tendency to add modern, crystalline touches to their fantasy settings. In FF14 its explained as being from an ancient, advanced civilisation that went extinct. I assume the same designers worked on this.
"How do we make our game engaging to the player?" "What if we turned it into a walking simulator whenever youre engaging with the story. That way the player is in control of what would otherwise be cutscenes?" "But wouldnt that just make them antsy for real gameplay? and what if they dont do what we want them to do?" "We just tell them no. No, you cant grab the bag of money before rescuing homer. No, you cant shoot that kid in the face with a rock to skip the cutscene. No, you cant throw a rock at Tanta Sila. No, you cant run, you just can't." "Perfect! I'll add walking segments to all our cutscenes in place of jumpcuts!"
It's just depressing because the potential idea of the game was good. Too bad the entire studio working on wanted us to like an unlikable MC... among other problems....
I don't have a problem with them stealing an apple in that situation. The dialogue just seems off though. The apple is needed to help Frey from starving, but maybe express some guilt in stealing the apple and pay them back later. The worst part is she ends up giving away the apple anyways.
"It didn't get any better." has to be one of the best lines to describe this game. Oneyplays playthrough on it is my favorite however, since they literally predict most of the dialogue in this game.

Another example of why you shouldn't pick hardmode in games like this. It doesn't make the AI smarter, doesn't upgrade enemies to more challenging types earlier than you'd see then in lower difficulty settings. Doesn't actually impact the mechanics of the game, it just ups their HP and lowers yours. It's not hardmode, it's tedious mode. Like counting to a thousand, instead of counting to one hundred. Even a 6 year old can count to a thousand, it's just very boring and time consuming, rather like this game.
Watching these cutscenes has my mind ablaze at how easily they couldve added to the towns people mechanic wise. Have the challenge dungeons be related to fixing the land and clearing corruption. Letting you setup new little settlements that could have shops with unique and custom gear or something. Have the guy who gives a tour be the mapmaker. Make the game's area maps general and vague at first, then he gives you detailed ones by going to talk to him and showing optional treasures you might've missed. Maybe when you make an area safe enough he can send you couriers with treasure maps directly whenever youre out and about. Give us SOMETHING to make us care instead of being annoyed or apathetic to most of the npcs.
ok so this is hardly the biggest critique of this game, but it is the only one I haven't seen, the boss was a "lesser deinosuchus" the ladder half of that name being an actual extinct species of crocodile. So either they thought "terrible crocodile" in Greek was a good name for it and didn't know it already was a real thing, or they named it that because it sounds and looks cool without any thought. In summation most RPGs don't name their boss battles "tyrannosaurus" unless it is one
Based on the fact that he called it a PTW cloak I'm guessing the RGB cloak cost extra money, which makes it hilariously scummy that the character makes a point of saying OOOOH LOOK AT THIS CLOAK IT'S AWESOMEEE and then UGH look at this BASIC cloak for PEASANTS
Is simple: if the protagonist doesn't seem to care, why should the players?

Storytelling 101 is always make sure the main character WANTS to be a real hero by establishing their better qualities earlier so that way their growth to being better is believable because said better traits are amplified through that development.

My reasoning as to why writers decide to create such unlikable protagonists is because they probably look at characters like Kratos and think:
“Hey, this guy’s an absolute asshole and people love him for it! Let’s make our own protag like that!”
But they completely miss the point.

Both get thrown into a conflict they really had no desire to be in and both also have a massive ego (hero complex especially Luke)
Of course there are massive differences.
you could see how luke changes throughout the story from an arrogant Noble boy with the emotional maturity of a 7-year old, to a depressed moral do-gooder with an existential crisis, to a genuine hero.
Meanwhile Frey hardly changes throughout her story and suddenly she wants to help these people in despite telling them to fuck off throughout

Being strong does not mean being rude or uncaring or abrasive for absolutely no reason. I wish more writers would acknowledge this. I will say, this trope has been done with male characters as well, but it does seem to becoming a more common occurrence with female characters lately.
@@blueflare3848 My guess would be that when looking for a quick and easy way to write "strong woman", writers fall back into the same things that we used for "strong men" in the 80's and 90's--brooding, antisocial, cracking one-liners. And not realising that audiences got bored of male characters like that some time ago.
@@paulgibbon5991 I think you're absolutely right. We went from "strong men" being unfeeling and apathetic, and now the "strong female" characters are suffering from the same fate. I do believe that it can work when done correctly, but it certainly wasn't executed well in this game.
@@paulgibbon5991 These new characters are even worse, because even the muscle men of the 80s were not as egotistical and narcissistic as the new "strong women" characters. They also had depth from time to time -Rambo had a breakdown at the end of his first movie, the Terminator protected Conner in T2, the muscle bound Schwarzenegger actuallu cared for his kids in Kindergarten Cop. *spoilers for one of the endings but I doubt anyone cares* They should have made a scene or a feature in the game where you can take pictures with the NPCs with your phone and make memories (You know, if the NPCs were memorable). But if you choose the ending where you leave, it would leave a consequence other than leaving a world, you forget the people you forged bonds with.
@@paulgibbon5991 ikr there are absolutely ZERO examples of good writing after those started the trend.
I think the biggest reason that this game falls flat is the protagonist. The main character in a game is the lens that you experience the world with, so when Frey clearly doesn’t care about the plot, the player has no reason to either. This ruins any immersion while simultaneously making the protagonist really unlikeable.

It says a lot that on OneyPlays they kept jokingly saying the absolute shittiest dialogue they could come up with only to immediately have the game say that exact dialogue over and over.

8:44 why did they give the boss the same name as the prehistoric gator deinosuchus when it doesn't even look like one?
Another example of why you shouldn't pick hardmode in games like this. It doesn't make the AI smarter, doesn't upgrade enemies to more challenging types earlier than you'd see then in lower difficulty settings. Doesn't actually impact the mechanics of the game, it just ups their HP and lowers yours. It's not hardmode, it's tedious mode. Like counting to a thousand, instead of counting to one hundred. Even a 6 year old can count to a thousand, it's just very boring and time consuming, rather like this game.

Combat is giving me, "We playtested it... sure we did most of the playtesting ourselves, but it's good! We swear!"
Based on the fact that he called it a PTW cloak I'm guessing the RGB cloak cost extra money, which makes it hilariously scummy that the character makes a point of saying OOOOH LOOK AT THIS CLOAK IT'S AWESOMEEE and then UGH look at this BASIC cloak for PEASANTS
what’s hilarious is i can play rdr2, cyberpunk, bg3 and gta v all on high or ultra but i wouldn’t be able to meet the base specs for this shitpile
The editing in this video definitely earned a sub from me. “Stupid decision after stupid decision, etc.” was the deal-sealer.🙂
