  • We react to Jeangu Macrooy's live performance of The Netherlands' Eurovision 2021 song "Birth of a New Age". He says: “The song is an ode to everyone who stands up for themselves and dares to celebrate the power of their authenticity.” This comes through in the lyrics: “They burned your heroes at the stake, your voice will echo all their names, this ain’t the end, it’s the birth of a new age.”

    As a disabled (autistic) woman who has only recently started to stand up for myself, who last year was really starting to heal from a decade of shitty mental health, Jeangu has once again captured something very relevant to me - I hope y’all from marginalised communities feel the same way, because you deserve to feel powerful in your beautiful unique identity ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤

    It's no joke, this song is in my top 5 right now for this year and it was quite a shock for me when I found out that is on the very last places in bets and in everyone's lists. It may no be a winner, but having this dead last? I can't wrap my head around that.

      Exactly! I have it a bit lower on my list because I find it very tricky to position it among such different songs but it has a really special place in my heart. I feel like people are placing it so low just because it's the host country, which I find a bit disappointing. I think Jeangu knows it's not gonna do well, he just sent a song that he wants people to hear, and I love that. I really look forward to the performance, I think it's gonna be such a nice moment of everyone coming together ❤ proud of my country's representative!

    I don't understand why so many fans are hating on this song. Personally it's one of my favorite Eurovision songs of all time. I don't expect everyone to love it, but I just do not understand why so many people are ranking it last. I think it might have to do with lack of exposure to certain musical genres like gospel, soul, or African-inspired music. People are ranking it on the qualities of a pop song but it's not a pop song so of course it won't have the same structure and feel. I so hope this does well even if only to prove the haters wrong.

    I absolutely love this! As you guys say, it pulls you in, it's like a hug... And it's a celebration! It just makes me really happy to watch, it gives me such a warm feeling. And it's very meaningful.
    It didn't make me cry like Growth did, but I also quite like that it's not trying to be Growth 2.0.
    When I saw the video, I was really impressed too, it"s so aesthetically pleasing!
    I'm just really sad about all the negative comments. I get that people are mad that it's not a song that absolutely screams 'winner' but some people are calling it a joke entry and making fun of it/saying really rude things and it's just so sad to see. I somehow feel very protective of this song, it makes me feel so warm and happy and to see people making fun of that, breaks my heart. I don't feel like that about any of the other songs I like this year, this one is special to me.

    Grow touched me differently and I loved it, it spoke to me in a difficult year. Birth of a new age gives me vibes of another Jeangu song “aisa”. This is exactly what I hoped for but didn’t get with grow. I love not only the historic surinamese proverb which we are know for from Jeangu, but also the Surinamese instruments, culture, clothes, dances and practices with the water bath. This song is unapologetically Suriname. And I am so proud that the whole world will hear it. Also amazing research, thank you!

I know a lot of people hearing/watching the song/video won't bother to learn either which saddens me. But it's especially a shame that so many who see it for the first time at the final won't know these things. I loved loved Grow, probably more than this....but I feel like this one has a rhythm Grow doesn't, which might be helpful with an ESC audience?? Deban clarified the history of Suriname and The Netherlands as well as the context, culture and representation of the song very well. Those were all things that needed to be said. I do, unfortunately however, not think people will respond to this because it is so different and unique. Comments haven't been too hopeful and I feel it's because people, even in The Netherlands, don't know a lot of Surinamese history except for the fact that we (The Netherlands) colonised them, slavery happened and that today we're close friends. I don't think most Dutch people know that besides Dutch many Surinamese people speak Sranan Tongo. I feel you might need that context to understand what this song is about and to fully appreciate it. I, as a white man, can simply not fully comprehend all of the emotions many others might feel, yet I did feel something and I'm so glad we FINALLY did this.

I lost my cat last October, my best friend a frw days later and my brother in January, he died from covid19. I'm still very fragile, and honestly not really in the Eurovision vibe. I had more vibes of Jesus Christ Superstar, than Lion King or Hair! Don’t know why, though. Have to watch it again to figure it out. I do like the song though, but he needs to sing better at the ESC. Besides that I wonder if the background singers are allowed to participate in the live version or that they will be on tape. The problem maybe that they are hardly background singers, they are more equal lead singers. And if they can’t perform live then the strong point must come from the stage act and lighting. I don’t think that is the essence of ESC. But who knows, there have been stranger winners in the past.

    Here in the Netherlands many people “misheard” You are my broccoli. Many Surinamese people felt offended on social media, claiming it’s disrespectful towards their language and culture. But then, isn’t this typically Eurovision to “mishear” unknown lyrics from Albania, Poland or whichever language one’s not familiar with? What do you think? Is it also offensive to sing along with KEIINO doing only “helulu helulu”? I mean that is actually a language with a history right? But I don’t think Norwegians were as aggressive on social media afterwards. I’m honestly wondering what other people think about this. Many thanks for the video, great reaction ❤️ from Amsterdam

    • @bleukreuz
      @bleukreuz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true. For people who speaks English and not the Surinamese language (Sranan Tongo), and without seeing the lyric written on a screen, it sounds like he is saying "broccoli". You can't be mad at people for that because they literally doesn't know what the actual words are. As long as they don't continuously joke about it or mocking it, I think it's ok.

    • @andreagarcia4236
      @andreagarcia4236 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it's mostly the context. This is an empowerment song and imagine if you are trying to send a powerful message, "You will not break me" and everyone responds with "lol, broccoli". Surinamese culture is greatly underrepresented so I can get them being offended for being taken as a joke in a place where they can barely participate.

    Not a “typical” Eurovision song but it stands out in the celebration of diversity ...and that’s where it’s all about, to enjoy the full range of creativity.

    I must say the live is not that bad, i actually like it better compared to the recorded version!
    However, that many people on stage is not going to be possible (which is a shame), so i wonder how they will do this. Respect to Deban for doing his homework in regards to Suriname.

    This is absolutely awesome just like "Grow" or even better. ❤ I feel like the Dutch really want to become the next Ireland and win multiple times in a row :D (...and imho it would be even more deserved with Jeangu ^^')
    I totally don't understand all the "he's not from Europe" comments and I'm really afraid this song will get buried somewhere among the last places just because of that. :/ In a contest in which Israel and Australia take part each year, and even Morocco did it once. Ugh.

    Thankfull for the authenticity and orginality, but grow managed to touch me deep inside, it was magical. This song medicore. But it was clear for me that a song like grow is not replaceable. Same goes for switzerland. Gions tears song is also not replaceable.

    The song sounds good to me and shall be outstanding when you compare it to the average and mediocre ESC entries that you hear this year. Because it’s different. I only listened to a few of the other entries. Is it me, or are there quite some ‘Iceland 2020 entry wannabees and copiers’ amongst them? Besides that, people should stop making the ‘broccoli joke’. Because if you want to be original and funny, take note that approx. some 1.000 people before you already made the same joke. So, don’t be a bore.

      Originally I didn’t hear it until you and approx. some 1.000 other people before you brought this up to try to be funny. Well it isn’t because the joke is old now and far from original anymore.

    I agree with Deban that I prefer Grow more than this entry. However this one - birth of a new age - is a pretty decent effort. I like that it's more upbeat than Grow but Grow is not as noisy as this entry. I think this is bottom 5. good luck to netherlands.

    Thank you Deban for the political background to Suriname which was very useful. This video took a few views to cast its spell on me but regrettably most Eurovision viewers will see it only once so may struggle to connect with the song. Perhaps a revamp to up the gospel elements and maybe even have the Surinamese language play a bigger role.

    Oh dear........while some countries have upped their game from last year, I'm afraid The Netherlands have slipped....
    I love Jeangu and "Grow" was in my top 5 of 2020 but this entry is going to struggle.. his vocals are amazing as ever but for me, this is very musical theatre, very Lion King....
    Lyrics are meaningful but for Eurovision?.....i don't think so.
    Nevertheless, i will continue to follow Jeangu's career because his talent will surely win out in the end...
    I will still have "Grow" to cherish regardless.😪

    I didn't like the live version at all (too 'messy', and not even wanted to watch it trough). But did watch the studio version (no 'competition' between back vocals and Jeanqu, more clear to hear the build up, you hear his voice better, less 'messy'). Much, much better.

    I have lived for more than 20 years in NL. I can tell you that the reputation for tolerance is good PR but far from the reality. Meanwhile this guy is very worthy and likeable, but this is more of an event, a moment, than a song. This is a problem in a song contest.
