This was a really good vid. Since it is a short track, and being that there were 5 cars, the higher hp cars didn't really get a chance to stretch their legs. Once they got some room though the were really fast. Always wanted to see a Zed against a Cayman S.
4.7s from Porsche's website. Any Porsche fan knows that they ALWAYS put slower times on their site. The Cayman S has always been faster on the track than the 370Z.
Bj Tormon the Z had a faster lap time and finished in second place only a few tents from the Cayman. The Porsche nonetheless cost twice as much as a Z. Bears that in mind.
I want an S2000 so bad, it puts up a really good fight for what it has(4 cyl, 9 years old, just ended production June 09), and I'm thinking of going for a Cayman after owning a S2000. But then there's that 370Z, which had the fastest lap time.
I used to be the biggest Z fan.. but the engine quality and weight has Killed this legend off (for me).. I mean I don't really want aircon and all the other heavy crap in a sports car.
@mtgear1 it's actually a pretty realistic result. a lot of testers like the cayman more than the 911, and of course a lot more than the not very refined 370z. only area where the cayman maybe lacks vs the others in this test is horsepower
Watch it again and pay attention to the massive body roll and understeer of the 135i. It also doesn't come with an LSD unlike the others, which prevents it from putting all the power down coming out of the corners.
Agreed. Although my guess is it would crush the others. The BM crew seems to dislike American automobiles. I get that a 'Vette may not have the engaging road feel of an S2K or an NSX, but it walks them both. And I admit that as a non-Vette lover.
Its funny because the Z was weaving and fight the rest of the racers the whole way and still had the fastest lap time. Although it never caught the Cayman, it had a quicker lap time than the Cayman, which means alot considering the Cayman started with a lead and didn't have to out maneuver anybody, it was a clear path the whole way and they still finished 2 seconds slower on their best lap time.
exactly thanks westwoodbeats..... honestly the only weak point on the Z is the engine power..... just add a HKS Supercharger kit or Turbo kit.... for $5K USD then re-match again.... and still running for less money....
Actually, in Tsukuba, base 997 Carrera (Gen 1) can outrun Cayman S. Best Motoring did the test a few years ago. (In Nurburgring, Cayman S posted quicker time though). Note: In this test, 911 Carrera serves as a camera car to observe Cayman S vs. Z34 battle. Kinoshita (911 driver) does early-braking several times and not overtaking Z34.
They can get the Porsches because there is a Porsche dealer in Japan... And they sell plenty of them here. Consumers knows what they buy regardless of what BM says (although can influence a little).
You were actually right. Maybe he was looking at the 911 before they got the power bump to 345hp (from 325hp), Porsche claims 4.7 seconds for this PDK 911, but as with the cayman s (Porsche's cayman s claim- 4.9s, Motor Trend test-4.5s) the 911 could probably get it in 4.5s or even less
I agree...the price that a person pays for a car doesnt matter at the race track, it all comes down to performance and driver skill, if you have the overall better of both then you should win the race.. if someone is worried about prices, they should go buy a kia

keep in mind the 370Z in this test is NOT the sports variant. this one has no LSD and smaller tires. the sports package equiiped Z with the auto rev match and wider tires would most likely go FTW.
Of course it won't take an evo off the line, it doesn't have awd. However, I doubt that it will give up anything to it on the track. Car and Driver's Lightning Lap Challenge proved that, where a non-HR Z had the fastest lap time, ahead of everything in its class, like an evo, mustang gt, cobalt ss, etc...
Interesting video... great heel-toe techniques, so the drivers are definitely experienced. Not sure if this was an actual test or not, but the cayman s is a fast machine, only a little less powerful than its 911 big brother, but if they had an LSD on it wouldn't have been close. Plus the cayman can out handle a 911 thanks to a centrally located engine... 911s is further back. :)
That is true, the Cayman is a rear-mid engine setup whereas the 911 is rear engine... The Cayman does handle better and would absolutely outhandle the 911 (Carrera) if Porsche hadn't de-tuned it by leaving out an LSD... (Now that I say that, I'm not sure if the Cayman has an LSD or not, Porsche included an LSD in the 09+ models S models)
Man I was SOO going to get the s2000, but when the 370z came out and I researched on it for weeks, I defineatly changed my mind lol. Cant wait for my 370z! S2000 is way too expensive for what it gives... 35k starting... Its a great car and all, but not worth so much money. I remember when the price was like 32k
I think you have your numbers mixed up. The base Carrera has 325hp and does 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, and the 1/4 in 13 seconds flat. That's basically 370Z numbers.
I haven't seen one in person yet, but I'm kinda hoping that I won't like it. I'm about to buy an '07 350Z, and I don't want to be tempted into spending a lot more on the new one.
Very impressive times for the 370. Second behind the 911 Carrera, for only $30,000. Too bad it's not very pretty in my eyes. I prefer the 07-08 350Z, as far as styling goes.

How is the laptime the most important thing when the cars that started last will be crossing the start line at a faster speed? Don't you think that would equal a faster lap time?

Maybe I was looking at the S then, either way the Porsche is a superior machine my dad has a Carrera 4S 06 and it could smoke any stock 350 or 370z like nothin
calm down everyone, this video is real, look at the lap times at the end , the 911was clearly faster than the z, a few more laps and the 911 would have won. again look at the lap times not the actual race outcome.
Driver in S2000 was moving out of the way for the rest of the cars. Why? Who put him in that car? He is suave with his fast shifting but can not follow the race line when taking the corner. He gave up before the race even started.
s2k is definitely down on power but he never took the proper line early one. he just stayed wide even when it was clear for him to be inside and doing better
@s2kvozac the s2000 is clearly the slowest car here. the driver isn't gonna be a dick and block the whole track. not to mention, he was probably taking the corners faster than the car could handle, so he could keep his position.

The 350z came 2nd place, and beat the 911 in 3rd 135i in fourth BECAUSE of POLITICS. Otherwise: 911 first place, boxster 2nd place, 135i 3rd place, 370z 4th place, and S2000 finishes last.
i cant tell but is that the new cayman S with direct injection?? doesnt look it and if it isnt then the new one would have a bigger lead then the older one!! im glad i own one

Wow im impressed how the 370 performed. I have an 08 Base and that car looks so much flatter and faster in the turns. They seemed to have helped the natural understeer problems of the z33.
If you guys want to know a real secret, the 370z is not living up to its potential because the suspension is not very well sorted. The ride height is too high. The damping is too soft. Spring rates are good, but intended for too long of travel because of the soft damping rates. Roll bars are good, maybe a touch too soft. The 911 and Cayman, on the other hand are very well sorted. Not truely track worthy, but much better than the Z. (I have a 370z with sport package).
A moderately loaded Cayman S costs around to $75K, while a fully loaded 370Z Nismo costs $53K. Cayman S does 0-60mph in 4.7s, while Nismo does it in 4.5s. Where in here do you find the 370Z slower or of lesser value than the Cayman S? The specs & pricing are from Nissan and Porsche websites. Go check them out.

This was stupid. The final order meant nothing. It was all about the drivers. The Cayman turned the third fastest time, but won overall because the driver was good. The 911 turned the fastest time but came in 3rd because the driver was not good.

I agree, I have owned both.. Value for money goes to the Z all day, Cayman is a bit more refined though but costs twice as much secondhand.

I completely agree, the 997, especially with the PDK would own all the others and definately the Cayman S.
at 7:59 the carrera should have sent it up the inside of the 370z! its so much faster then the 370z in a straight line

This Z DOES have the sport package. The one without has different wheels. These are lightweight Rays wheels included in the package.

0-60 in 4.5 seconds and the 1/4 mile in about 12, that's just for the basic model not the PDK.

They already had a comparison like that a couple of years ago. The corvette got beat by an evo.

cayman s is great car for having under 300 hp and putting a good fight against that 370z , Carrera plus the others
