Yale's band couldn't travel with their team to March Madness; so the Idaho Vandals stepped in

- SPOKANE, Wash. - One of the best traditions of college basketball is, of course, the band.
They are the hype factor for every college team, but 4 News Now learned on Friday that one of the school's bands was unable to travel with their team to Spokane for March Madness.
That's when the University of Idaho marching band stepped in to help.
When the Vandals learned that Yale's marching band couldn't make the cross-country trip to Spokane, they were asked if they could fill in on Yale's behalf.
Immediately, they said yes.
"We got a call from our athletics department around Sunday saying, 'Hey, Yale's band couldn't make it. Would the University of Idaho Vandal band like to step in?'" Spencer Martin, band director, said. "And it just worked out to where we could come up and play."
"The Sound of Idaho" got to work, quickly learning the Yale Fight Song before the Bulldogs' first-round game against Auburn on Friday.
"We got the music this morning," Andre Moore, a trombonist, said. "We learned it, and I think we sound pretty good."
They loaded up on the bus and hit the road to gear up for one of the biggest venues in college sports.
"It's a cool opportunity, and it's cool that we were chosen over all the other bands in the Pacific Northwest," Moore said. "It's always cool helping out another school."
The Vandals even looked the part on Friday, trading out their Vandal Gold for Yale Blue.
But there were some subtle cameos of Vandal Pride on Friday.
"We're sneakily representing U of I," Martin said with a smile. "We're here to help our friends from Yale but we might write a few new lyrics to the Vandal fight song."
Yale pulled off the upset and beat Auburn on Friday to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Yale and the band representing them will be back in action on Sunday against San Diego State.

Yale has a two-week spring break, and most students make other plans since the team is not a regular NCAA Tournament participant. But I have it on good authority that the Yale Precision Marching Band will make the trip to Boston for the next round if the team wins on Sunday.
Shame on the band. The basketball team made it, so they should have made it as well. Sounds like the band doesn’t support their sports teams at all.

I am a recent alumnus of the band. I do not know for sure what happened, but given how Yale’s Athletic Department has previously treated us, my guess is that they made a blanket decision on the matter without asking us. Based on my time with the band, we would have been very enthusiastic about the prospect of going, but the Athletic Department constantly makes head scratching moves on our behalf without our input.

Righhht as someone who worked at my Universitys endowment and saw how much money was donated to basketball.. pretty sure they should expand the travel budget to cover the fkn band .. ! Tragic misalignment in leadership

Their protestations against the University for not divesting from fossil fuels caused the school to charter the band an all electric bus but the battery ran out with the bus now stuck outside Albany with a snowstorm tonight.
