I'm the opposite with missing pieces - I don't care so much that I'll intentionally get the bottom of the barrel puzzles, meaning no box and sometimes no picture, in a ziploc bag for a dollar or less. The missing pieces are part of the experience xD my record was 92/300 missing, and surprisingly only 2 pieces couldn't be attached to anything.
I joke that I'm literally paying to take out their trash, but it's a local charity shop that helps the schools around town so I don't mind.

At least the money is going to a good cause which is great! You are right though, it does kind of add a whole mystery side to the whole experience. And it becomes a very pleasant surprise when they're all there. In the end, you still get your fun puzzle time for next to no cost, which is always a big win.

I just recently found your channel and have been binging your videos. I really appreciate your laid back nature and your stories. Last year I did a jigsaw advent calendar and it reawakened my love of puzzling. So many channels are just about speed and puzzle size. I'm a casual puzzler and I've never gone over a thousand pieces. Am I the only one who wouldn't dream of taking apart a puzzle once it's finished? I want to display them! I'm going to turn my hallway into a puzzle gallery! LOL Oh, and I think you're very brave for buying thrift store puzzles. If I finished and was missing one piece I think I'd cry, lol.

Thank you so much 😁Happy to hear your enjoying my videos!
I see and hear so many others doing jigsaw advent calendars and I've yet to try one lol. This year will be the year! I don't blame you for wanting to display all your puzzles. I wish I could but I lack wall space. I'd have to start decorating the ceilings or the closet walls 🤣It does sting a bit when I take them apart, especially if it took a long time to complete. But then I figure, I can do it again later on. I do much prefer to buy new puzzles, and only started buying used recently (mainly to save money lol). It is risky, but I just keep crossing my fingers and hope for the best when I get to them LOL.

@@thepuzzledmandy I get the lack of wall space. I don't have a ton either, but I'm gonna go for it and sacrifice the entire hallway, lol. The advent calendar was really fun. I've already ordered one for this year, lol. The one I did last year was 24 sections that made one big Christmas picture. This year's will make 24 stand alone mini pictures. Amazon has bunches if you're interested.

Yes, those prices were high yo me as well. I live in the greater Seattle area and at my facorite Goodwill store pay 1.99 for a used 1000 pc puzzle and 5.99 for a brand new 1000 pc.
As for the krypt, definitely start in the middle and work your way out. Edges on some can be tricky because the pieces don't always connect. I have done the silver, gradient and the metalic mint.
Love your videos and you sense of humor. Thank you!

I hope all the pieces are there! I've completed the Gradient, Gold, Silver and Universe Glow Krypts. Although they seem intimidating, they're actually quite relaxing when you get into the flow of it. Of course sorting pieces by shape is most important for these puzzles as you can't rely on image. There are many unique shapes which really helps. You'll need fair bit of space to lay all the pieces out. I hope you have fun with it :)
When I buy second hand puzzles I don't count the pieces as puzzles often have more or less than the piece count on the box. For example most '1000' piece puzzles are actually 1026 piece puzzles, 500 piece usually 513 and I know some Waddingtons 1000 piece puzzles are actually 988 pieces

I love thrift stores, but usually there are not that many puzzles to choose from. I find it quite funny that some write on the box "includes all the pieces" and then they put a 10 € price tag on it! And you can get a new one for 11 €! 😄 But yeah, as someone here wisely said, also new puzzles are sometimes missing a piece or two, so I don't really mind - unless, now that I'm thinking about it, the piece is missing from a face or something! 😳 Oh no, I feel like I just unlocked a new fear... 🙈 A great video as always, have fun with your Krypt! 😁

You really have to know your prices for new puzzle sets...almost like with groceries, so that you know you're getting the best deal lol. And it's for sure true with new puzzles, those are not free from missing pieces. Thankfully I haven't had the displeasure of coming across a missing piece yet. But yea, an incomplete face would be absolutely terrible 🤣 Its great that lots of companies now do offer a replacement guarantee, which give you some relief.

Nice haul! Last time I went to my thrift store there were some nice finds. I found several Ceaco puzzles, several Master Pieces and several from Buffalo. Most of their puzzles are .50 or 1.00. It's just a small local thrift store. Sometimes they have nice ones, sometimes not so much. I don't count the pieces, I just wing it. I've been very lucky with most of them having all the pieces. I buy almost all of my puzzles at thrift stores. Those prices seem high to me, but since that place had a lot of them, you could check now and then for gems like the Krypyt one. There are a lot of thrift stores in my area, so I figured out which ones consistently have a lot of puzzles. Some stores will only ever have just a handful. My favorite place is actually a used book and media store (DVDs, video games, etc.). They have a HUGE aisle of puzzles. Most are priced similarly to ebay, but it's still way less expensive because there's no shipping. Also, it's very common for the pieces of a thrifted puzzle to be loose in the box. I worry more about dropping a piece without noticing than having missing pieces from a thrifted puzzle. Some places will let you look inside the box at the register before you buy a used puzzle, so it couldn't hurt to ask!

    • @thepuzzledmandy
      @thepuzzledmandy  ปีที่แล้ว

Yea, I'm thinking I might pop in whenever I'm in the area and see if I find any good surprises. I don't really seem to have a lot of thrift stores in my area, and the ones that I know of so far are a bit of a drive. I never thought to look up a used books/media store though. I'm planning to hit up a bunch of flea markets, as they're a ton of them popping up around me this time of year. I actually found a piece in my couch the other day that I obviously dropped while I was filming this video 😂. I'll try and see if they'll let me peek inside the box the next time I try to purchase one at a thrift store. Thank you for the tips!

I don’t usually count before I start a used puzzle. The very first puzzle I ever built that had a missing piece was a brand new puzzle. So I figure if it could happen either way, why worry about it. Plus I find it really only bothers me if a brand new puzzle has missing pieces.

I had 1 puzzle that was missing all the edge pieces so I just put it in the trash. I had 1 puzzle that had a note on the box that it was missing a piece, but I didn't notice the note until I finished paying, but I put it together anyway because I wanted to try out that brand. So far I've only had 1 that I didn't know about the missing piece until I finished. That's not bad since I've put together 18 puzzles and spent less than $60. I'm still thinking about whether I want to head back there again, but I really need to check out the other thrift stores in my area, as I'm sure I can find much better deals elsewhere.

@@wowzieee Yes it's in USD. I'm super excited for garage/yard sale season! Also, where I live there are tons of flea markets that are starting to open up. Lots of trips are planned for puzzle hunting on the cheap!

I think those prices were kind of high and the fact that there were so many different prices was kind of weird. Makes me think there are too many people pricing things. and as far as counting pieces, "hel! no...LOL"

I think those are not great prices for used puzzles. I usually pay 2.. to 3.00 dollars the most at our thrift stores.

I was really surprised how expensive they seemed. Glad to hear others agree! I'm not sure if I'll head back to that particular store, as I'm sure there are better ones out there that don't charge as much.

I buy a lot of my puzzles from charity shops in the UK when I visit family and rarely have missing pieces. To be honest I don't mind if they are secondhand as I only pay about £3 a puzzle. Last summer I brought 18 back with me 😂I often get Falcon, Schmitt, Ravensburger, Gibsons and Galison at charity shops. From what I have seen of other thrift shop hauls yours were a little bit on the expensive side.

Wow, did you have a spare suitcase to stuff all those puzzles in 🤣? I'm hoping I can find more of a selection of brands at my next thrift stop. Also, hoping to find better prices. These were too expensive for my liking.

I have thrifted a bunch of puzzles including some very vintage ones and actually so far out of the puzzles I've finished... I have yet to actually be missing any pieces??? Knock on wood lmao.
If i like a puzzle enough i am willing to custom make replacement pieces so I don't stress too hard about it anyway.
There are a bunch of puzzles at my library's swap that are missing pieces and they say so on the box, sometimes even marking where the missing pieces are with a little x or something on the box or poster. So if I was going to donate a puzzle that was missing pieces I would follow that example.
Come to think of it we recently picked up a puzzle that was labeled as having 5 missing pieces, in the same handwriting as some puzzles I've seen at the library. So I guess I have thrifted a puzzle with missing pieces but it came with a warning! It was such a good deal that it was worth it, and I'll restore it if we like it a lot.

That is super lucky. I just recently completed a used puzzle that I picked up at a different thrift store, and it ended up being my first instance of missing pieces 😔When I donate it, I will be marking the boxes to say that it's missing pieces for the next puzzler. Thankfully, it was a really cheap. I've seen several other puzzlers craft the missing pieces, but I think I would mess it up really bad😂

Pricing at your shop a bit high. I average under $5.00. I just bought. 2000 pc. Ravensburger $4.99. My best find was a foreign brand Disney $3.99. When I checked on eBay that puzzle in nicer box…over $400.00! Thank you puzzle Gods! I always wipe down the exterior of thrift shop puzzle boxes, put all pieces in a plastic zip bag and put a note to remind that it was a used thrift store puzzle.
Lastly, I try use a charity thrift shop as opposed to a for profit shop.
Lastly, lastly have you or any of your viewers gone to jigsaw puzzle swap meet?

Wow you got a jackpot set!! That's awesome. That's a great habit to get into after picking up thrifted puzzles, especially if all the pieces are loose (gonna put my Krypt pieces in a bag now 😊). I have not gone to a puzzle swap yet. I really need to look up and see if there are any meetups in my area. I live in a rural area so hopefully there's at least one.
