Music Composer Ravi & the Golden Age of Hindi Cine Music is a new kind of experiment in the genere of documentary cinema. It documents the personality & work of a musician & not the story of his life. Along with briefly documenting Ravi's personality & work , it concurrently records how he actually creates a tune which then culminates into a song. The attempt of showcasing the complete process of creating a song, is a first in documentary cinema.

मोहम्मद रफी साहब के साथ, शकील, साहिर और राजेंद्रकृष्ण जी के साथ रवि साहब ने अनमोल काम किया है । उन्होंने बहुत सारे गीत ऐसे रचे हैं, जो हमेशा ही मन को आनंद देते हैं ।

A true legend. His music represented the best of this Indian art form. He didn't use western instruments or western styling in his songs like today music directors sadly use. He nurtured the Indian music without copying western style.

I remember one occasion with RaviJI, The year was 1973, I had just come to New York
in search for job. There was a small one room Temple called Gita Temple in Elmhurst Queens. Every Sunday one singer use to come there with his Harmonium and sing bhajans, I being a shaukiya Tabla player will bring my tabla to the temple and accompany him with Bhajans, This singer happened to be Gope Chander, one of the sons of famous Sindhi poet/singer Master Chander. Very few people will show up in temple on Sundays those days, but we two use to enjoy our self. On one Sunday while we performing with no one else in the temple, one gentleman enter the temple, sat own, listen to our couple of bhajans and then requested that he would like to sing a bhajan, He took the harmonium and sang a bhajan. I was on Tabla so I played with his bhajan, Little I knew that this gentleman was non other but the Music Director Ravi as Gope Chander later told me. I Felt blessed. After So many years I still play tabla with Bhajans in one or other temple every week/now and then, whenever I get chance, must be a blessing in disguise of that day.
Brother you are blessed to have been in his company , he indeed was GREAT .

Jitna zabardast programme record kiya hai, bohut hi dil,chasp hai, programme dekh kr 1948 ka bachpn yaad aa giya jb mein 5th class ka student tha aur sb se pehli film SHAHEED 1948 mein dekhi thi uss k baad Gemni ki Chander lekha dekhi thi.

The way music maestro Khayyam sahab spoke about the maestro Ravi sahab in the beginning of the video ; it shows that there were no signs of competition , hatred or jealousy among them . & that is why , till date their works are still so well known . Both of them had given us some memorable , unforgettable & irreplaceable melodies which we will remember throughout our lives . I owe to write few words for this great music genius whom I have loved most as a child and whose songs l sang most on stage during my childhood.His tunes were so perfect that you could not alter even a note.Melody, simplicity and depth were his Hallmark.Althogh Shanker Jaikishan was my favourite ,even they,or Burman,or Op Nayyar could not match this man.He has created most iconic songs than anyone else.Eai Meri zohra jabeen,Tu Hindu bane ga na,Raha gardishoon me har dam,Sab kuchh luta ke hosh mein.,Koi mujh see poochhey tum mere kya ho,mora man darpan kehleye,and many others.Lataji forgot the best song she sang for him in Ghoonghat film:Lagey na mora jeeya sajna nahi aaye.Raviji is no more but his music would light our hearts for years to come.I simply love this man.Hats off to him.

a few days ago my father's uncle(papa ke chacha Ji)told me that Ravi Ji and my grandfather was a very good friend, they sing, compose music together in old Delhi. when I listen to Ravi Ji songs I miss my grandfather.
Ravi Sahab is my favourite music director. Our domestic mehfil Ravi and Rafi Sshab ke geeto se sajati hai. Mai Ravi Sahab ki hi gaane ko gaata hun. 2009 me mai inake ghar bhi jaa kar mila hun. Thank you. R P Swarnakar, Daltonganj 822 101. India.
Ravi is one music director I have always admired, both for his excellent music and his humble personality. One thing that stands out in this interview is the fact that Ravi crafted his music to support other departments of the song. He composed the tune after the lyricist had finished his work. And he kept the music subdued so that the singer could shine. This is the stuff that legends are made of and a lesson for the current generation of Bollywood music directors.

Great documentary on the iconic music director ravi. A legend by all means. A gem. Proud of him.
What an amazing video this is ... wow ... Suresh ji brings a lyrics to Ravi ji and asks him to compose a song. Ravi ji then shows us the making of that song. When I heard the ' sample for approval ' I thought it was just a mediocre one. Rehearsals was fine and then the final song was recorded. The final was a million miles away from the first sample. And it had the hallmark Ravi ji music. The orchestra was so totally not enough and as big as usual Ravi ji recordings but still the magic was there. The singer sung the song very nice. It was an amazing video.
I am a huge fan of Ravi ji because Mohammad Rafi sung such wonderful song in his compositions. The compositions of those songs were unique and soul touching. And I love so many of Ravi ji songs. I can always identifiy a song composed by Ravi ji if I hear that for the first time without anyone telling me.
I wonder why Ravi ji did not speak about Rafi sahib and songs he composed. Now come on, he didnt even mention movie Do Badan, Doli, Amanat and so on. The songs sung by Mohammad Rafi saheb are most amazing songs and yet Ravi ji did not mention Rafi sahib at all. [ Chaudwin ka chaand in his conversation dont count. lol ]
Anyway, I had always wanted to learn more about Ravi ji. This video and few others on the youtube are very pleasant surprise. My best regards to this legendary composer whose music I love from my heart.

Never knew that Ravi Ji during his initial days in Bollywood started as a Chorus Singer for Burman Dada and Hemant Da. The best part of it is that he never forgot the days of his first profession (repairing Electrical Appliances) though later he made his career in Bollywood. This is the greatness of a true and renowned legend.

You are really hard working music composer. Hemant Kumar didn't stop your creativity to perform independently realizing that you had assisted him tremendously. He forced you you to leave your job with him for which you had to face financial difficulties for some time and then came the Golden boom.
Marvelous. But why no mention of one of the best of Raviji's works: Dosti.? Surely one of the best examples of M Rafi's singing, don't you agree? And the songs in that film .... straight to the heart!
Ravi in many other interviews talks at length that he would imagine Rafi singing when composing and even sings a tribute song to him .

Hi Raviji, being a Malayali, I got almost all song collection where you had given the music direction. Its simplicity and attraction is beyond explanation and that may be the reason why I like all of your songs. In fact till this this moment, I was under the impression that you are a Malayali and as you living in Bombay, the name added like that. For my surprise, when I realised the fact, I still love you too much and I showed my daughter that how a song is just being prepared and giving life to it. When I got the Malayalam song album called 'Hits Songs of Bombay Ravi', I could not deleted any of the songs and all are best in its perfection. Hope you will contribute a lot more to the eternity of Music. A lots of prays and good wishes for your good health and well being.
Ravi was a first class music director but you know once an artist's heyday is over he has to confine himself to his home. As a music lover I feel Tamil films adopted him after his time in Mumbai. Since he was a master of music, Tamil films enjoyed his work and he had all praises for Tamil film industry.
