We have a few in the queue. Since DOING the farming takes a fair bit of time, ironically the more potential videos we have to put out, the longer it takes to get each one out! Glad you enjoy them and we'll try to keep some fresh ones under way
Congratulations! Enjoyed the video! As you know, we are partial to Jerseys! Haha! Looking forward to more analysis! We appreciate a scientific approach. Farming is just one big experiment!
She is a full size, though relatively small as far as full size Jerseys go. She is about 47"tall and 750lbs at 20 months. We need to come up with a 2nd heifer comparison video because there have been a lot of changes in the last 9 months!
Congratulations! That's exciting. I have Dexters but occasionally think of getting a mini Jersey. I get plenty of milk when I do milk my Dexters. But Jerseys have such pretty faces. It's hard not to fall in love with them.
Jerseys are beautiful. We get enough milk when we milk two Dexters. Our Dexters aren't always in milk at the same time. Should have had some overlap this second lactation, but one of our Dexters became cystic and didn't conceive till after treated by the vet. But milking takes about 40 min to an hour from start to finish on two as they let down slowly and hold back--I think their orifices are also smaller...and sometimes they don't want to come in to be milked at all and we chase them all over); Ria's dam and grand dam milk out in 5-7 minutes. So if we can cut overall milking time to 15-20 minutes for the same amount of milk we get from milking two cows, that would be wonderful. It will be interesting to compare.
Calf share is always a pain IMO, I separate calf and bottle raise - then no issues with let down. While dexters are good dual purpose like you said , not enough milk. I enjoy cross-breeding Jersey with beef dexter for some really good meat. Wishing you the best.
I have a 3/4 mini jersey 1/4 dexter heifer and a full jersey heifer that I plan to milk next year. I am very interested in what you find out milking both breeds.
Take all calves away when you milk. Calf sharing does not work out past a few weeks. Or designate a cow only for the calves that of course means a regular milk routine. It isn't the breed.
I TOTALLY AGREE....DO NOT KEEP FEEDING CALF OFF THE COW...THAT IS WHY YOU DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH MILK FOR YOURSELVES....CALVES SHOULD ONLY DRINK WHEN FIRST BORN TO ABOUT 2 WEEKS EXCLUSIVELY ALONE...THIS IS SO THE CALF GETS ITS COLOSTRUM(BLOODY LOOKING) MILK FROM THE COW... THEN YOU ONLY GIVE CALF TO COW WHEN YOU ARE MILKING...NOT A 12 HOUR SHIFT LIKE YOU ARE DOING... I WAS IN FARMING THAT IS HOW WE DID IT.. FROM WISCONSIN.
just found your page. looking forward to catching up your videos. Hi from Canada

Dear Simon & Heather, thank you for the videos. Just to let you know, I am looking forward to see how the comparison comes out.
More videos I've missed y'all!

Wonderful video! A great spot of luck, congratulations! And always great to hear from you again.

As we have dexter straws, we will probably have quite a few jersey-dexter steers.

You should let us know your experience when you begin milking your two cows!
