  • We're pleased to present this documentary on "Mini Milkers - The Miniature Jersey"!
Thank you to Tim O'Donnell for sharing his knowledge and experience with all of us. And to the cows, for their participation.
Edited and produced by John and Anni Winings
The miniature Jersey cow is a smaller version of the famous Jersey cow that produces such rich, creamy milk. Their small size is a huge advantage for small land-owner who want to be able to pasture a cow of their own to produce milk for their families.
This video is fully captioned in English.

What a lovely man! It's apparent that he loves those cows. They are adorable. If I'm ever in need of that quantity of milk, and have adequate land, I'm convinced that the darling mini Jersey is the best choice. I'm so glad I got to see this. Thank you!

You are so well rounded and educated. Everytime i watch your vlogs, i learn so much. I grew up a city girl, started homesteading in my 30's. I have forgotten about ham salad, though i like a little onion in mine. My chikdren took a lot of egg salad sandwiches, and meatloaf sandwiches made with either ground beef or ground turkey. Later, i found i could make a ground pork meatloaf flavored with barbeque sauce. I have never made hot pockets, but I will now. My large family is grown and living their best lives, I run a small 3 acre homestead with my 43 year old autistic son. We have made a sweet life with intention and simplicity. As always, God is good!

Cynthia Weathers I milk my in buffaloes in the same way when they are few days old. But when buffalo get bigger they squeeze out milk much faster than I can, so I let them drink after milking. However I have bottle-fed orphan buffalo calves and calves rejected by their mothers but I don't need to massage them as buffaloes don't lick or massage their babies during breastfeeding.

There is many reasons people who have more than one cow don’t do that.Firs, hygiene standards,we don’t want saliva, dust, dirt, hair get in milk.we want to control how much each baby gets, doing like you’re dad and uncle did, don’t guarantee how much baby gets, probably human or machine milks faster than baby drinks and baby won’t get enought and then you can end with malnourished baby...also when it’s not just own homestead and one cow,you need to make profits,to buy hay, food, minerals, pay vets and generally take best care of them.if you won’t make profits cows will end suffering the first.if we won’t do what we do,breed won’t be needed and will perish.so farmers do what they do with best intentions.Nothing worst than seeing animal suffer and not knowing, not beeing able to help, not having enought money for vets and treatments.Take it from me who grew up with hundreds of cows and spent whole childhood feeding baby cows with bottles while having other hand suckled up till elbow buy other baby 😂 Cows are intelligent, gentle, loving animals,no normal person wanna harm them, especially farmer for who these cows are literally way of life and feeders. But as I sed it’s not realistic to keep babies with mums if you have more than one cow.You literally can’t sell milk if it has bacteria from babies saliva. If you have one in own homestead for own use,it’s own decision how and what to do..on other side,as with humans, cows also not all have same amount of milk, quality babies can be weaker drink less and if you don’t milk, cow won’t produce as much milk, and then baby can perish..so yeah, there are more reasons than one to milk and give baby controlled quantity of milk even if you have just one cow.

I love this guys honesty. It is an extremely similar situation to the dog world. People start breeding a specific breed or type just to make money. They may not have the money or the access to a genuine "Miniature Jersey" so they cross the cow with something as close as possible to the mini Jersey and advertise it as a "Miniature Jersey" and charge top dollar. It is just so disgusting. If the original cows didn't have horns and were a certain size and certain color then that should be the standard. Money, money, money..........it really is the root of (almost) all evil. These are beautiful animals and they really serve a great purpose, especially with more and more people operating micro or mini farms. If I were ever going to own a cow, this would be the breed. I enjoy animals that not only give something back, like milk, cheese, eggs, etc. but I love having an animal that is a pet or even like a family member. Animals and humans seem to do better when there is that relationship with mutual respect and admiration for each other.

Please don't laugh at me I am learning. May I just have one goat and one mini cow and get milk? Or the cows need to have a baby to have milk? I want to learn as much as possible before I get animals so I can take good care of them, and one more question is, do you have to take care of their hoofs like you do with goats? Thank you to anyone who willing to help and give me a serious, helpful answer. My auntie had regular cows and a bull, I was too little to learn about all this but I love cows they are such mild sweet creatures.

    • @HomesteadandGardens
      @HomesteadandGardens  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

There are no bad questions here. :) The cow (and the goat) would have to have been pregnant in order for lactation (milk production) to be initiated. So if you can buy a cow (and goat) that have recently given birth and are producing milk, as long as you milk them twice a day (some people say you can decrease that to once a day, but it could possibly cause some stress to the cow/goat, and/or it would decrease the amount of milk they give) you can maintain their milk flow for up to 2 1/2 or 3 years. At that point, their milk supply would for sure be decreasing, and they would need to be "dried up" and get pregnant and have another baby, in order to induce full lactation once more.
You don't have to own a male cow (a bull) or goat in order for them to get pregnant. You can arrange with a local farmer for him to bring in a bull of your choosing, or you can have a veterinarian use a collected sample from a bull to impregnate your cow.
      Good luck! :)

I hate to compare myself to a cow, but I am a mom of two boys, and I did breastfeed, it hurts when you don't empty, lol, I would not do that to a poor mama, I would definitely milk her twice a day. Do they ever sell the cow mama and the baby together? Do you know? I would hate to separate a mama from her calf, I don't mind sharing the milk :)

I grew up on a "standard Jersey" grade A dairy back in the 60s and 70s ... 187 head on line and normally another 10 to 12 freshening..some of our "girls" could be traced back to the isle of Jersey... unfortunately horns have been bred out😞 ?? Are the bulls temperamental like the standards tend to be..standard Jersey bulls "use to" have a reputation as the meanest dairy bull
I'd love to have either one as a family cow ...very true it's great milk not like what comes in those plastic or cardboard containers.

I notice your cows are walking on concrete, at least in the milking parlour. Is that bad for them or for their hooves?

Do mini cows have heath problems?

Mini's not so much, micro breeds are a different story. It's becoming a contest to see who can breed the smallest cattle, inbreeding is a serious issue and genetic problems occur due to it.

Does the cow need to give birth before it can produce milk?

I know that this video is old but nonetheless I still enjoyed every minute of it. He has a great setup and it takes a great deal of time to figure out what works for you. His cows are gorgeous and I hope he's still milking yet today. I was trying to figure out what kind of milking machine you were using. Either a DeLaval or a Universal? I used Bodman milking machines and they were ok. I was just too short to reach the pipeline to attach the hose when I was at the highest end of the pipeline. I was milking Holsteins and some Jerseys to help raise the butterfat content, since Holsteins have such a low butterfat content.
And for the people asking why the calves are not left on their mothers? A calf will scour, or another words, severe diarrhea and die. It would also cause the cow to almost dry up, only producing what the calf needs if it didn't die. We're talking DAIRY cows, not BEEF cows. That's the sole purpose of a dairy cow to produce milk to be used in making butter, yogurt, cheeses, and, of course ice cream. And I know I'm going to get flack about this but it is what it is. 🤷

I really really really want a Trio! There don't seem to be ANY in South Idaho :( It would go a long way to keeping my family afloat if only I could find some to buy... you know, so it wont cost me more then my house to go get and buy. They would fit my land perfectly.
Oops, almost forgot to ask, What kind of milker machine do you use?

I believe Tim said it's about 2 1/2 gallons or so. Just as a reference, a normal-sized cow will give about 6-7 or so gallons.
