    Always learning...at the end of the video we share a take away Landon told us that he learned from his dad about whitetail deer and then ducking in certain positions vs others.

      I'm guessing the reasoning behind the advice of not to shoot when their head is down is because the animal is in it's most vulnerable position at that time so they're naturally more prone to a super quick reflex reaction? That makes sense to me. That buck moved FAST.

    This is one of the many lessons my father had taught to me, that not every hunt is successful, but enjoying your time in nature and the experience is what it's all about! Hope yall smoke a big one next time around!

    Poor penetration and still shooting mech heads? Y'all should have gotten with Ranch Fairy down in TX. THP is on the high FOC, single bevel or COC train now as well, so they probably can help out some.

    Thank for sharing the hunt. The head down thing is real for sure because for a deer to duck, it must first lower its head. If its head is already lowered, its already got a jump on the duck. I stalked within 60 yards of a feeding axis doe about 2 months ago, set up my video cam, pulled back and let er fly. The arrow was perfectly on target but with her head down feeding, she was already ducking within a split second of the shot. By the time the arrow reaches her, she is tucking her butt under with the arrow passing just behind her butt. I have never see a deer react so fast to get out of the way of an arrow. I'm shooting a 440 gran arrow at 290'/sec. That's some quick reaction time.

    There are a few good vids from multiple spurces abut deer ducking more when their head is down compared to at alert. I appreciate all the fail vids even more than the ones who act like it never happens to them.

    Scariest segment was the chair breaking, almost! My heart sank when that buck dropped, much like yours did I’m sure. That would take some serious discipline to aim lower just in anticipation of him dropping like that at the very last moment before impact. Excellent footage and good take away as always. Invaluable. Looking forward to many more episodes.

    Get on the FOC band wagon for more penetration. It will even make your bow more quite at the release. It is amazing how much difference it makes. Yes you lose speed but if you can’t penetrate what good does that do. You owe it to the animal.

    having been born and raised in Texas, I would add a caveat to Brian's comment about the opportunity to hunt. That is IF you own land to hunt on. 99+% of land in Texas is private land. No access = no hunting.

    • @gethushin
      @gethushin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is true, if you don’t own land you can find some great places to hunt. Now that we have visited a few states like that we sure enjoy our public lands.

    @hushin you should check out growing deer tv on youtube episode 462 i beleive. Dr. Woods done a video on deer dropping out of the way of an arrow. He talks about when the head is down vs. up. He done an excellent job and has hopefully helped a lot of hunters be more successful. it sucks to wound an animal and not know whether it survived or died. been there and know the feeling. yall do a great job representing the hunters. keep up the great videos.

    Come OFF those mechanicals guys! Though they fly like field points, they are sooooooo notorious for LACK of penetration on marginal or hard quarterin shots! Had that had been a cut on contact you would have most likely cut the spine or atleast the femoral artery and that Buck would have been goin home witcha. Trust me I've shot atleast half a dozen different mechanicals and had success with them but BY FAR I have had MORE consistent success with Cut on contacts!

    • @gethushin
      @gethushin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gethushin Unfortunately nothing recent only 3 kills on a 15 yr old camera, but this comin up season I have a two of my huntin buds that just bought 2 Camera's from that came from Cambell Cameras in Illinios so hopefully we will be gettin some kills on vidja this year. Over the last 20 yrs, I'm 57 yrs young by the way I've shot Wasp Jack hammers, Rage, Killzone and a few others with a fair amount of success out of my Mathews Drenalin. About 6 or 7 years ago I went back Cut on Contacts after not recovering the only 2 Deer I ever lost due to mechanical broadhead failure and havent lost a single Deer since. I shoot a 300 spine arrow with 100 grain Brass inserts, and a 125 grain Magnus Black Hornet Serazor, or a 125 grain G-5 Blazer and sometimes tip'em with a 150 grain Valkarie. I'm here to tell you what you loose in speed you GAIN in PENETRATING DEVASTATION on a Deer! I even lowered the poundage of my bow from 70lbs to 65 lbs and have BLOWN THROUGH both shoulders on Whitetails and Hogs believe it or not! I got the Idea from a guy in Texas called The Ranch Fairy! He has a You tube channel that you should check out on Forward Of Center (FOC) setups that will completely change yer thinkin on Huntin Arrows and Bow Set ups. I wouldn't believe it myself til I started watchin and tryin fer myself. He and Dr. Ashbery have both done extensive research on this and are slowly changin the way Archers Hunt. We, myself included always wanted speed and high poundage and lighter arrows and thought that's what you needed to be successful. They concentrate on what the arrow does once it hits the animal and thier results are INCREDIBLE! Check him out and you will be as Shocked and Happy as I was once you see what your set up does even on Elk and Moose size game! Theres a vidja of a lady shootin a 45 lb bow at an Asiatic Water Buffalo with a FRONTAL SHOT and she kills it DEAD with the arrow completely passing into the hind quarter after entering the Bull between the front shoulder and the brisket!!! My total arrow weight is about 575 to 600 grains. By the way Love the Hushin channel, EC Outside, and havent missed any episodes ya'all's content and footage is always nothin short of AMAZING!! Keep them vidja's comin guy's!!

    • @arttrumbo9496
      @arttrumbo9496 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know if the outcome would have been any different with a fixed blade. Don't get me wrong, I shoot heavy fixed blades and think that it is the way to go, but IMO that impact was just too high no matter which broadhead was on the arrow. Definitely no chance of hitting a femoral artery. The closest artery would have been the abdominal or thoracic aorta, which would kill him real quick, but the aorta sits just under the spinal column, and it looks like the arrow impacted just above it. There is a chance that the arrow hit a part of the spinal vertebrae called the spinus process and bounced off because it is a pretty solid bone. Maybe an arrow with better penetration and momentum could have punched into that and at least stunned him, but still probably would have missed the actual spine because it runs under the spinus process.

  • @Ogreslol
    @Ogreslol 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks like you hit no mans land. Just above the lungs but below the spine. The fact that you didn't punch through tells me you need a heavier arrow/broadhead setup. Lose some speed but punch through and the lower speed often makes the bow a bit quieter.

    Quick question here: I`m not familiar with the laws in Texas (or the US for that matter), but arent you bound by law to persue and kill an animal that has been wounded? The hunting laws where i`m from strictly states that the hunt is not over until the animal has been found and taken care of (either put down or found dead). You are even allowed to enter someone elses land (you should notify them ofc.) to persue an injured animal. If you after a certain ammount of time cant find the injured animal yourself, the "case" i sent over to the state and or Police depending on what type of game you injured. (different ways to handle predatory game (Bears, lynx etc.)
    Anyways, good luck on the next hunts and lets hope the land owner (or anyone) finds the injured deer.
