Our apologies for the lost footage. In the last 5 years of doing this it has only happened twice thankfully. Regardless, we only lost one day and we move forward. These late season mule deer hunts are a ton of fun and we're optimistic that we'll get into some good rutting action. Stick with us as we hope to fill 3 buck tags!

Those are my very favorite, but I really missed seeing you guys in Colorado together last year! The original day by day. Heck yeah!

I have a story! I was elk hunting in North Dakota with a cow tag and came across a bull that someone had shot in the back foot and lower jaw. It was a day or 2 from starving to death or dying of dehydration. After 12 calls to different local game wardens I finally got the go ahead to end its suffering. I was able to end its pain and harvest all the meat. The game warden came out and met us and gave me a salvage tag so I didn’t have to use my once in a lifetime tag on it! He also hauled everything to my pickup on his atv so we had zero pack out. I ended up deciding not to harvest a cow as I already had 2 elk in the freezer from that season and did not need more meat or have room for it.

Before ONx maps were available we were hunting in the desert one year and it was foggy and overcast. We came up to this fence line that had no markings but thought it was for diverting wild elk away from the highway or some sort. We seen a herd of elk running with one that seemed to be wounded in the back so my buddy decided to shoot at it- luckily he didn't hit her because shortly after they passed a truck came up right behind them and yelled at us saying these are domestic elk!
so luckily the bullet didn't connect. Very thankful for OnX maps !

Been there done that! I finished off a nice 24” muley in Wyoming years ago that was gimping around on a front shoulder. Not a giant but it sure felt good to put an animal down which was in bad shape. I’d do it again in a heart beat. Much respect man!! Keep it up boys!

  • @shaneshuff

Also this year I had two mule deer bucks. One maybe 185” the other was completely wrapped up in about 50’ of baling twine. I passed on the bigger buck feeling it was the right thing to do. My buck (which you could not see any antlers as they were completely covered in twine) turned out to be a nice mature wide 4x3. Did the right thing in my mind and still ended up with a trophy!!

2013 I drew a branch bull tag for WA state. Found a 300 or so 6x6 that appeared to have a broken hind leg. Watched him for 2 days looking for a bigger bull, day 3 I harvested that bull, it couldn’t run, upon butchering it had been shot by a bow hunter. The bone had grown over the arrow, but I harvested him because I knew he wouldn’t make it through the winter. Meat was good, that’s my main reason for hunting. It also took me 9 years to draw that tag, so hopefully I’ll draw it again and get one of the bigger bulls in that unit. Thanks for sharing your journey

Years ago after the season was over I was out on patrol and came across a blacktail forked horn (two point for you guys 😂). One of his back legs was shattered at the ankle. He looked for sure like coyote fodder. He could barely move. I could have legally put him down but for some reason I couldn't bring myself to do it. Two years later, during season, just up the ridge a couple hundred yards, I took a heavy antlered 4x3. You guessed it, same ankle, fused mass of healed bone. No doubt it was the same buck. They are tough and resilient.

I've had 3 animals mounted by a guy that did it in his garage for a fraction of the cost and time. The oldest one is 20 years old and still looks as good now as it did when I picked it up. Just amazing work. The key is to find one of those guys. I lost his phone number and have been unable to get ahold of anyone that knows him. There's no way i'd trust anyone with a huge deposit on a job that may be a year and half out. Way to much to go wrong there.

This happened to someone I know. He hunted the late blacktail deer hunt in Oregon. After a day back in he was returning to his truck when he spotted a buck. Turns out the buck had a smashed nose. After shooting it it was obvious that a cat had tried to kill it. The buck was not going to make it through the winter. Just the right thing to do.

When I was young, maybe 13-14 years old. My dad and I were out hunting and were up on a ridge, we heard a shot on the next ridge over. We looked to see if we could see what they got. We saw two guys go down and get to this bear they had shot. We watched them for awhile and saw them cut off a paw or claws and take some pictures then they just left it there. My dad, knowing my grandpa had a tag, went and told my grandpa about it and they decided to put my grandpa’s tag on it and we packed it out.

I took out several people turkey hunting 7 or 8 years ago and had them all take their birds to a “friend” who said he’d have them done in a few months. All 7-8 people put at least half down, some paid in full. The only one who ever got a turkey back was a very large ex marine that pinned him against the wall and told him he’s going home with a turkey or money.

I’ve had several mounts take twice as long as i was told it would take. It happens I guess. But I do have a horror story. In 2008 I killed a full velvet 11pt doe in Alabama in January with my bow. Sent it to a guy and $550. 2 years later after phone calls visits and emails. No luck. I stopped by and demanded the antlers back. I was handed the antlers with velvet dried to the horns full of bugs and the skull cap cracked in two. Said he tends to do that so mounts will fit in a plastic tote. To this day I haven’t found another taxidermist to touch them. Once in a life time deer and the 150in rack sitting in trash bags in a old cooler in my garage. Haven’t bothered to mount another one since then.

My first archery bull ever, took it to a taxidermist and a few months later he posts that he’s going out of business and moving. So I hit him up, he said yeah i started on your elk but won’t be able to finish and I’d have to come pick it up and take it to another taxidermist to finish. I went to his shop, he wasn’t there, the rack and hide(inside a trash bag) was sitting outside by the front door, ivories gone, hide ruined, and skull cut flat so I couldn’t euro mount it. And he never gave me back my $500 deposit. First and worst experience lol

Yup 4 years ago had a small buck come in with a busted back leg. Bone was sticking out. So I put him down. For sure the coyotes would have got him. 2 year old or younger.

RE: Wounded animals - Western Wa, I lived on acreage and had blacktail around all the time. Brand new fawn (maybe 2 days old) and one of its front legs was completely broken, only hanging on by what seemed to be a little skin. I figured for sure it was coyote or lion bait & wouldn't make it. I didn't see it again .. until several months later. It's leg had healed with a large calcium deposit and it was limping a little, but getting around well and looked healthy. Tough animals, as we know. Bad taxidermy stories .. thankfully no.

I had a similar experience many many years ago when I lived in Wyoming. I had shot an absolutely beautiful pronghorn. My brother knew of a 'good' taxidermist so I let him take it. I waited 3 years. Finally my brother told me the guy admitted that he had somehow ruined the hide in the process. I'm certain the guy has it hanging on his own wall.

I gave a taxidermist a duck to mount and a weasel Hyde it has been about 3 or 4 years and he says the same thing, Ill get it done here in the next few weeks, but he has not and it has been really annoying. It's sad that this kind of thing can happen.

I’ve never had problems or ever heard of people having problems unless they didn’t pay. I actually shot a big whitetail a few years ago and had it mounted but the guys was a good friend so he let me help him do the mount and that’s how I payed for it. But he had a connex trailer that was full of mounts( finished and unfinished) that people never paid for so he still had them. Or they payed for them and when he called them to tell em they where done they never responded.

I would take an injured animal no problem. I think as hunters it’s the right thing to do. Taking care of our herds is a big responsibility. On the other hand, I’m not going to put someone down for not taking an injured deer. Everyone needs to make their own decision. Love the videos and thank you for taking us along.

I dropped an antelope of to be euro mounted. I asked for it to be with no platform just skull and horns. Cane back with a platform that it was glued onto. I stated that I specifically asked for no platform he found it in his notes that I had requested that. He explained that he tried a new gluing system on the skull and said there would be no issues and no money back for the mess up. I took it home, I lived less than 200yds away. When I hung the antelope on the wall as I stepped off the ladder the skull fell from the wooden platform hitting me on the head, cutting my forehead, then falling to the ground and breaking the nose off the antelope. I brought it back same evening, bleeding from my forehead and broken pieces in hand. He tried to tell me it was my fault and charge me for repairs. (I did not pay for.) Finally once he repaired it weeks later he glued it back to the wood platform. What a horrible experience.
In regards to Casey's question. My wife shot a small 2 point on a rifle mule deer rut hunt as we noticed it had been wounded and would not make it. Upon harvesting he had cut his groin area. We would both make the same decision every time. Thank you HUSH crew for sharing your hunts. We truly enjoy our family nights watching the newest episode after dinner.
