@@kaleidoscope8914 agreed, Dustin listed possible causes like fuel starvation, previous blown turbo, and oil starvation. (could be an oil problem but I doubt it), but I believe it could be a tune related issue too.
@Kaleidoscope john over at FK8 tuning and development said that you can blow up a type r engine at 400hp when too much torque is requested and he is making type rs go 500+ on stock engines and everything works golden. Really believe is a tune issue cause engine shouldn’t blow up that easily. Also, Dustin is FBO, has upgraded fuel system and big turbo and they were only able to barely make 400hp. Really don’t know why but should be well over 400 easily.

Been watching for months now and this video finally got me to comment. I was invested in the Type R. This hit me deeper than I thought. I was stoked to see your runs this weekend. Like you say build back better! And even though it might be cliche and nerdy I think back to Initial D. Bunta said that Takumi needed to learn to lose/fail to progress. And he did that at Irohazaka by...blowing his engine. Its something I always remember and took to heart. I can't wait to see the Type R 2.0!
You and Tim work so well together on the cars and what yous do is amazing people who love cars every where around the world much respect from New Zealand 🇳🇿 keep up the hard work
You, Tim, and the rest of the team really need to celebrate how far you've come, and roll out of this. Blood, sweat, oil and tears aside, watching this build and your training for this event has really put the FK8 into better light for me; I've been converted!
I understand the frustration but there's only one thing to cure the disappointment...Just keep going. you'll eventually get it perfected. That's the reward. Just don't go for crazy numbers...that's always the temptation.
Oh man, after seeing what happened on IG i almost didn’t want to watch it but well made and beautiful video even with the sad ending! We know it’ll be back next time! Hopefully a bigger or better engine will have it back better then ever!
I'm very sorry Dustin, seeing this breaks my heart as well because I've been following the TypeR build from the beginning, and seeing how hard you guys worked on it, I was really looking forward to see the car performs. In my culture, there's a saying, the materialistic things go so you don't, and depends on the year you were born, certain car colors that you drive also means prosperity and luck too. This might mean something to you or it might not but at least, you're safe and you'll still be able to restore the Type R. Keep your heads up, this might be a blessing in disguise, if you're interest in finding out which color works best for the year you were born, let me know haha. Anyway, I wish you good luck and health, don't let this bring you down
My dad recently blew up his 1k hp 8th gen Civic Si. Just cruising at 25 mph and it let go for some reason. It really sucks but now its on to bigger and better things. Sucks that you had to go through that at a 3 day event man. Bounce back!
I’m so sorry brother. Keep your heads held high. Like you said use it to make you better , the car better and the team better. You will be back and it will be better than ever just like you always do.
This is definitely a good learning opportunity. I spun a rod bearing on my 05 Subaru years back. I know the pain. You’ll do great! Keep up the content!
I know that had to be heartbreaking, but you and Tim definitely should be proud of what you've done so far. The car looked and performed amazingly until the motor gave. I can't wait to see all that's to come with you guys and the Type R!
Gutted for you man all yours and Tim's hard work will pay off and you will come back bigger and stronger love your outlook and looks like you still had an awesome weekend head up bro 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Sorry to see you go through this. For the rebuild of the engine, you should check out installing a Unit2 fabrication baffled oil pan to help prevent oil starvation.
Not sure if it's the turbo that blew or the tune that blew the motor, but I highly recommend three things - RV660 Turbo from RV6 - they're a good engineering company that took a lot of R&D and testing of their turbo that they just released. I'd also see if you can get a tune done by Derek at IMW (Innovative Motorworks) -- he is the go to guy for almost every 10th gen turbo application and will get you squared away with a solid tune. For reference, he's the one that does most of the OTS maps that come with KTuners. Baffled pan -- I'm sure you've got it on the way for sure! Hope to see you back up and running again soon man, I'm glad you're back into a Type R after the first one
I blame the powermetrics tune. Seen enough being in the 10th gen community from their tunes blowing shit left and right all they care about is limits and power. Derek balances everything like a god. Derek is the GOAT. IMW is the move no if and or buts about it.
Just here to appreciate Tim. We see you and your hard work Tim, you don’t go unnoticed! Keep working hard man, you’re awesome. Dustin, don’t give up. Everyone successful has failed numerous times. Keep on keepin on bud! 👍🏼
Really respect what you do. Don’t want to blame anyone or any products but what ever you do next, really recommend getting tuned by John over at FK8 tuning and development.Type r community really respects him for what he does and his knowledge. But do your research first and find out what happened. Much love from a fellow type r owner🤞
If the stock oil pan isn't baffled, it's high probability that's where your oil starvation came from. I know it sucks. But it's apart of racing. Build it, race it, break it and do it all over again. But for sure look into a baffled oil pan. Good luck!

Just a tad over 5000 miles from Cota, across the ocean I was so bummed for you and Tim when I saw that you were looking for a new engine! It is commendable how you and tim switched gears and started looking for possible solutions. I'm sorry they did not work out for you. While it ran the Type-R looked mean and sounded even meaner! I for one am looking forward to seeing her back on track in the future. Goodluck with the rebuild! This weekends happenings are the stuff of origin stories. The Legend of the Type-R hopefully has many pages yet to be written!
Tuning is usually the main culprit. The K20c1 can handle more power than that and not grenade. You usually don't need to build the motor until over 500hp.
Dustin... Sorry that you couldn't race, but take it as type r saved you from having a bad day like wreck during the race... You are more important than the car or the race.... I like how thankful you are even when car gave up before the race.... I like to think that the car knew something worse was about to happen so.... Like you said, it aint your first rodeo.... Nothing rewarding comes easy! Keep pushing forward! This hobby/sport can really make you question things. But at the end of the day its all apart of the process and learning from it! Need to look into a baffled oil pan, learn from it and push! Keep at it
Sorry this happened to you guys, no doubt it's a solid gut punch. That said I'm looking forward to the new Bionic version of the CTR you guys will build. You guys got this bro 👊🏼

Been in there with my rb26 ended up just keeping the head and send the rest to trash can. Ordered new block from Japan and started over again. Hope you come back even stronger.
Sucks when cars breakdown without warning.... especially when you need them to run flawlessly! When you checked everything. I feel you man. I had my alternator, thermostat and battery leaks, electrical failures all within 3 days when we're about to go on a family trip. Just unpredictable..
It hurt just watching this, let alone what you had to be feeling. Before it conked out though it was looking very, very fast. You will come back even stronger. Too much passion and talent to be denied.

You guys are constantly fighting an uphill battle! But think of it this way. You guys are gonna learn how to prepare and compete much faster! Don’t beat yourself up Dustin! To me what this incident means is that you are capable of much more than the engine can handle and you should remember that. I discovered your channel few weeks ago and I’ve binge watched your videos from 2022. Even during that short time I can see how much you improved and how serious you are about track racing. You and Tim make a fantastic team and the only way is up!

Heat, that's the worst enemy for any Type R that is tracked . Don't rely on the oem temp gauge ,it's far from being reliable on the track . Benn fighting temp issues myself since I started tracking it !
Bolt ons are great and all but the foundation (Motor) is what matters most. Bigger turbo and big boy tune on a stock top and bottom end… it was only a matter of time brotha. Now lets see that rebuild babay💪 KEEP YOUR CHIN UP😎
Watching the build and creating a personal connection to it (as I’m a fk8 owner too) this hurt me to see it go this way. Like most of the comments here and what you said, only the beginning and excited to see what’s coming next.

Was really bummed I didn’t get to see you race, but you got to commentate with the SLB team. You will bounce back and kill it next year dude. Keep your head up Dut!! You have to come back next year and go after Jepps record.
One thing that has always stuck with me...if it was easy everyone would be doing it. Stay up Brodie, get right back to the drawing board and snap back better then ever!
Sorry to hear about this. As someone who has experienced this more times than i can admit, it does gives you the fuel to carry on and come back better.... (after some mourning and some beers lol) Look into adding just a bit more oil to engine to compensate for the cooler, lines, and extra G forces during cornering. All it takes is got a few good turns where the pump sucks air pockets, and with the engine speed temps, is easy to FUBAR the bearings which brings you to this. To me this sounds like oil starvation.
You guys should absolutely be proud! Please don’t give up on the FK8, it’s such an amazing platform. Go back to the drawing board and get that motor built. Y’all will come back 1000X better.
Sorry my guy! Blew my first turbo motor last year and it was devastating for me too as it was my daily driver. It’ does take a mental toll. Wishing you the best.
Part of racing mate. You build them break them and build them even better. All a learning curve as well bud.You will be back bigger and better we all have faith in you.
You guys worked really hard sorry it didn't go as planned. I'm thinking what probably happened was the oil was probably sloshing to much to the sides while taking those corners. Dry sump might be a very good investment for the next engine build. Best of luck guys!
You’re a legend dustin! Look at where this channel started and where you are now. I have no doubt in my mind that you’ll bounce back stronger from this minor set back. This is just a part of your history now 🤘🏼
It's so unfortunate... it sucks... but still, it's not the end of the road... the CTR will come back and stronger than before... your videos are inspiration for us all and teaches us to NEVER give up!!! Keep your head up for what you have accomplished... I am excited to see what comes next!
Thank you for continuing to be such an inspiration. I get emotional when you talk about growth and that mindset when struggle tries to overpower us. Thank you for being you!
When I heard the news this past weekend, I truly felt gutted for you Dustin. Wish you fulfilled your goal competing at COTA officially. I’ll personally buy some new Legends merch right now to help your cause.
Great work by everyone 👏. Rebuild and roll on the next race. Hope you can save some of the oil cooling system and turbo. You could fit a swirl pot for the fuel as well. Take care
Looks like you have been lifting hard in the gym, looking pretty stacked in that shirt Dut. So sorry to see your engine had some internal failure. Sounds like rod knock or piston slap. I know the feeling of needing and engine rebuild. My RB26 had issues as well and is in the process of a rebuild. Feeling frustrated and disappointed as the same time, not to mention the financial aspect and added stress to figure out how to fix everything. Your footage was very cinematic. Not sure if you switched to SLOG, codec, but man video quality was amazing, plus the editing and music was spot on. Great work , love this content, keep it coming.🔥
I suspect piece of the 1st aftermarket turbo definitely made it's way through the block. I was shocked when you guys didn't take more apart to ensure it was sound before putting the new turbo on. Somehow survived dyno day like that..
@@angelhernandez-ln8ik Tuning the fk8 for power is easier said than done with these new direct-injection motors. Not a fan of the new direct-injection motors at all.. I am a Honda Tech and we deal with tons of blown up SI's and Type R's.. They are just not the most reliable engines for power increase.
Dude, sorry to see this!! I know you say it’s a freak engine failure. But there will be a reason and it’s important to understand what actually happened. If you just rebuild it with no knowledge of why it failed, it could potentially happen again. Anyway, I know you’ll come back stronger and better next time 👏
Sucks to blow an engine... but rather find out during practice, then in the middle of the race and getting into a serious accident while at full throttle. Also lesson learned, while running practices, datalog. Its incredibly invaluable.
So sorry for this! That fail-forward mindset is 👌🔑 and will allow you to come back even stronger and better. We can't control random events, but we can control our responses. Good responses = good outcomes. I'm excited about what's to come in your future. That 1M is on the horizon!!!
If you really want to learn from this, go back and rewatch your practice laps and pay attention to your RPMs. Def over revved the engine multiple times, too high of RPMs into turns, like dangerously close to redline and even passed over redline on corn exit acceleration. Rebuild the car, out learn some bad habits and try again 💪
I always love your videos bro, even through this time of an unfortunate event I still see and feel the love and passion you bring out in the world. I believe you and Tim will achieve greatness, and with all the people that surrounds and supports you i know you can do it . Keep it up bro!!!👍🏽
It's a shame what happened but you have an amazing spirit, at least you can probably just throw in a new engine and away you go. One thing I can say as a total amateur is I notice you turn in a bit early, make the most out of the entry and the exit, Anyway i can't wait to see you back out there man.
It's always a bummer when stuff like this happens. BUT we all know you'll come back even better. Now, about building that engine....

This made me sad bro I’m sorry this happened but keep your head up 🙏🏼
Sorry to hear about this. As someone who has experienced this more times than i can admit, it does gives you the fuel to carry on and come back better.... (after some mourning and some beers lol)
Look into adding just a bit more oil to engine to compensate for the cooler, lines, and extra G forces during cornering.
Bummed to see what happened. You stayed humbled👍🏼👍🏼💯 Will come back stronger and better for Next time💯💯
You guys worked really hard sorry it didn't go as planned. I'm thinking what probably happened was the oil was probably sloshing to much to the sides while taking those corners. Dry sump might be a very good investment for the next engine build. Best of luck guys!
we all believe in u dustin what ever happens , happens for a reason. we trust u just come back stronger man
You’re a legend dustin! Look at where this channel started and where you are now. I have no doubt in my mind that you’ll bounce back stronger from this minor set back. This is just a part of your history now 🤘🏼
Dang man that's unfortunate but u look so DOMINATING on the track! Keep pushing bro u will hit ur peak when the time is right
I have such high hopes for you bro.. just a road block for whats to come! Keep that head up.
Tough times don't last brother, only tough ppl do !! CtR will be back stronger than ever I'm sure of it. #burnrubberNotyoursoul 🤙
Yes, this exactly.
Seems like a tuner problem
@@angelhernandez-ln8ik Tuning the fk8 for power is easier said than done with these new direct-injection motors. Not a fan of the new direct-injection motors at all.. I am a Honda Tech and we deal with tons of blown up SI's and Type R's.. They are just not the most reliable engines for power increase.
Damn man, sorry to hear! The comeback will be epic!!! Keep your head up
Don’t let the set back drag you down. Step back, process it, and come back better than before.
Its incredibly invaluable.
you cant succeed without failure, Soak it up, use it to drive your passion, comeback and kick ass!
Don’t give up brother keep going. I know someday you will achieve your mission. We’re with you Dustin. 💪🏽🤙🏽
Sorry about what happend to your Type R. and still you got on with your day, even with a smile on your face. I really respekt that Dustin.
@dustiinw_ Nice try scammer!
I’m so sorry that happened shit sucks but now it’s time to go forged internals and make even more power and come back stronger
It's a shame what happened but you have an amazing spirit, at least you can probably just throw in a new engine and away you go.
One thing I can say as a total amateur is I notice you turn in a bit early, make the most out of the entry and the exit,
Anyway i can't wait to see you back out there man.
