I am adding chapters to this video if you want to skip around to hear more about any certain subject, and I linked all the books I could find up in the description! I got lucky on a few of them, I've found all mine through year-long searches, thrift trips, and at antique stores and DANG those beauty book prices now! But anyway, I hope you enjoy hearing about this planning stage!

The comments about different people doing things differently made me think of a novel you might enjoy, "Excellent Women" by Barbara Pym, first published in 1952. Synopsis, an unmarried clergyman's daughter in postwar Britain stumbles into unexpected and very funny drama when new neighbors move into the flat downstairs and her church's vicar takes a boarder. The story is great, but I was also thinking of details like a day she goes out and buys a lipstick as a pick me up or accidentally runs into an acquaintance when she's "hatless and stockingless, wearing an old cotton dress and a cardigan." Those kinds of details remind me that people of the past had "uneven" days too, and didn't dress the same all the time even in the context of their own individual lives!

My parents were born in the early 1950s, and I love the fact that my two grandmothers had such different experiences in the same timeframe that shows how every experience is different. My maternal grandmother had 10 children, but she worked outside the home and still maintained her perfectly clean home in her spare time. My paternal grandmother had 3 children and was a stay-at-home mother and a farm wife. Both equally strong, beautiful, and inspirational women! Love these types of videos. They both did set their hair in rollers at night until the end of their lives!

My mum didn't approve of rouge or eye makeup (only fast women wore those lol) but she would not leave the house without foundation, powder and lipstick. Her hair was shorter but always permed and styled. In the 50s she also always went out with hat and gloves. A clean tidy house was a high priority as well as home cooking, making her own preserves etc and she sewed my dresses. I've no idea how she managed it all

Haha that's so funny! my grandma didn't ever wear eye makeup, but she was allergic to most of it.

Your videos are great! In my grandmas home, you would never find a wrinkle or a spec of dust anywhere. She was a navy veteran and very particular. Everyone is different, as for my grandma she definitely had a routine and was very picky on how her house was kept. Although her lifestyle might be a bit much for some, she remains an inspiration on how I live and run my household today.

Once upon a time as in throughout my high school years, I used to wear clip on earrings. Wearing them hurt my earlobes 😖every time I wore it. Then one day in my early twenties I stopped wearing clips permanently. Opting for pierced earrings. It took my lobes a year and a half to recover. I have over a hundred pairs of earrings. Pierce earrings are a lot better than clips. I haven't turned back since😊.

My mom was born in 1929(November), so she & her two older sisters were housewives of the '50s. They were influenced and taught by resources of the '40s on how to be wives/mothers in the 1940s as you mentioned. I'm sure that they all would like your channel and videos 😊, and would chime in about their experiences. Though sadly my mom was the first to pass away of her siblings. And now they're all gone on. If it helps, I think my grandma did read a lot of things back then, both of them. I have old tip articles, recipe books, and all sorts of things that I got from both of my grandmas. I am also the type of person who's really interested in homemaking and reading new tips and tricks in the modern era, so it's not surprising that my mom, dad, and my grandmas were all into that as well. I absolutely think that how to be a Perfect Housewife has always been a thing. Since the first cookbook that was published it always had practical ideas for a homemaker. Really even in Mid evil times it was a skill that every girl was tought. Since humans began to live in houses and stopped becoming nomadic and even possibly then women have always passed knowledge from one another.

I just found your channel! I’m 62, and my mom actually was a ‘50s housewife for ten years before she had me (I was #4 of 5). I had ALL those booklets and the books too. My mom was an orphan and had no mother so she was a “motherhood autodidact.” At the end of her life with dementia and in and out of lucidity she explained this all to me, how unsure she had been and how she tried copying movie moms and tv moms, and reading “all those books.” I had already guessed really because no other kid I knew had all these things laying around *their* house.
When I got married in 1986, I actually incorporated large amounts of those books into my routines and habits.
For child rearing there’s nothing like Dr. Spock to raise a self-entitled and insufferable child, and my kids are products of that laissez faire philosophy that made baby boomers the nightmarish parents to create ever-miserable millennials.
Watching you sort of makes me think that it’s like you came upon a time capsule from hundreds of years ago and you’re recreating a facsimile of what you think is my era (well, almost my era) but it’s like a shorthand version and not really the same. Still fascinating because I keep comparing it in my head against my memories. My oldest sister was born in ‘52, and I’ve forwarded a link to you channel to hear what she thinks too.
    Such fun!
