+Tipsylou That was mostly due to the segregation. Since everyone, including Puerto Ricans and Black people and so on paid into the system with taxes, but only white people got housing and business loans subsidised by the US Government, wealth concentration amongst white people went through the roof. To the point where, even today, on average, white people are 12x richer than people of colour if you look at household wealth. Then, of course, once the segregation ended. Suddenly social amenities like subsidisations for anyone aside from a few select corporations is a "handout". So, you could just start subsidise housing again, and let people of colour have houses too. Just an idea. I don't live in the US, we already subsidise houses where I live and they're ridiculously cheap. Nearest town I live by have about 40.000 people in it. Only 11 of them were recorded as homeless last year. So it doesn't affect me. I'm just saying. That's how houses work. Good luck with your future democratic assertions.
Vincentius Smith I really don't think that's the only reason at all. The UK had a completely different setup for minorities, as did a large amount of Europe that never had much ethnic diversity at all- but women weren't expected to work then, either, and it was affordable.
Tipsylou No, the UK has subsidised council housing. Just about every first world metropolitan society have housing subsidies. Some also impose rent caps. It's the easiest way to lower housing prices. And, while I agree that racism is nothing to base an economy upon, my point was, the people who were segregated kind of deserve a thanks for buying everyone houses in the US. That was just credit where credit was due.
Vincentius Smith Yes, but what I'm SAYING is that back in the 50's within Europe, council housing would've been almost entirely for white caucasians or European descendants. Your point applies solely to the USA, and was not the key contributor to the situation. That's not to say that I'm condoning the issues with tax in the US back then, but it really wasn't the only or even the biggest reason.
Tipsylou Oh yeah, I agree with that. I only mentioned it because, well, if you look at how formerly segregated places are compared to the privileged ones, you'll see an obvious distinction. Which shows that subsidised housing clearly makes a difference to people.
George was played by the late veteran actor Darrell McGavan. He had starred in the 1983 Christmas film"A Christmas Story" together with Peter Billingsley.God bless his dear memory.
lol Her husband is like an infomercial- "Tired of cupboard handles that break off the second you touch them with the gentlest force?" Get it together. Bob, it's just a cupboard.
That guy reminds me of my dad. My mom broke her arm in a car wreck last year, and he got a crash course in housekeeping for a couple months. She actually had to talk him through changing the sheets on the bed. And after 45 years of marriage, he had no clue where the clean towels and sheets were kept. That blew my mind.
My dad used to boast about having never done the laundry. Probably considered it women's work if I know him. Sometimes I feel sorry for my mom. After my mom taught me how to make a quilt he insinuated that I might be gay because I could operate a sewing machine. I actually taught myself to sew doing upholstery, which is a field dominated by men. So not everything from the 50's was so great.
But nothing had really changed. Yes, more men 40 & under do household chores. But people are still as rigid and sheep like as ever. In the 50's society was rigidly organized around separate men & women's worlds. In the 2020s, women now HAVE to work, which means we've lost the parent who would normally keep careful with over what the kids are learning and doing. This has lead to massive fractures in passed down values, including anti-western culture sentiments. We're also living through the insanity of men being legally allowed to change their birth certificates and drivers licenses to say that they're female. So not everything is great these days, either.
Stunning Marsha Hunt as "Alice" was an emerging star in the 1940's, but in the early 50's she and her 2nd husband were blacklisted which derailed her film career. So, here she is doing the 1950's equivalent of an infomercial to earn a paycheck. (She's 37 or 38 here and still gorgeous! She's about to turn 104 next week!)
Jane’s Friend: “Isn’t my house beautiful? I almost feel indecent.” Jane: “I wish I could have a new home. George keeps dragging his feet on buying one and now I’m going to Cleveland to take care of my sick mother.” Janes friend:”.... I got this fantastic washer and gas dryer too😊😊😊.” Jane: “🙂”
Unfortunately that’s how it is sometimes, where the kids are more proficient than dad. When my mother had late nights at work, I (her 15 year old daughter) was in charge of figuring out dinner for myself and dad. Why? Because I knew where the pots and pans were, and how she liked the washing done. Dad pulled his weight by chopping the veggies or paying for dinner when we decided to just order out.
"My mom is ill, I'm going to go visit her." "Hey, come look at my fancy new washer and dryer!" Edit: 1.6K likes, wow, thanks, never had a comment with so many likes 😀
"Oh dear, George can't get it up anymore and I don't know what to do!" "Hey, come look at my new fancy vibrator. It's fully automatic and it has 3 different settings. Here, try it."
Fast forward 20 years. Their new kitchen looks extremely dated so they borrow against their almost paid off house for a new kitchen...never really getting out of debt.
Probably not because even the 1970s they had mortgage burning parties where when she paid off your house people would actually have big celebrations and burn the mortgage paperwork. But by the 1990s, absolutely !
Actually, as their home value increased in the 60's & 70's, they probably doubled their investment and moved to another house. A median priced home in 1950 sold for $7,400. In 1970 that house sold for $17,000.
YES! THEY LOOK LIKE DOLLS! but I could never understand how they could wear heels all day and not seem bothered 😢with my flat feet and wide monkey toes I could never

Gracie Anne I grew up in a ranch house and we had to do the same. Although I love the hum of indoor heating, theres something way better about heat from a fire. Makes everyone huddle together and have family time while it’s still warming up.
@@Great_Lake_Surfer my Gran had to light the coal stove to hear the house in rural Appalachia until 1989...had a well and outhouse too. I was burned on the stove as a toddler and used to be so scared for my little cousins running around in the house.

@@TH-hy9kr mine too! Technically, she was my great. She actually passed in 89. I couldn't get over how she still used the outhouse and did her own cooking til the end
When I was a kid, my mom had to go to the hospital for an extended stay. To get the laundry done, he drew a picture of the control panels on the washer and dryer and took it when he went to the hospital to visit her. Luckily, he drew very well and mom was able to explain the whole process to her. This was in the 60s, so it wasn’t that far from this film.
I watch these types if videos for two reasons. 1: history is neat, and I like to reflect upon a half century of societal progress. 2: 50's fashion is bitchen' as hell.
As my wife puts it, "Why is it that women's liberation denigrated 'women's work'? In the 1970s I wanted respect for being a housewife and mother and now nobody thinks being these things has any value."
I remember as a child, watching my grandmother doing laundry. She had a washer where you had to use what's called a wringer to wring the excess water out of the clothes. Then hung the laundry outside on a clothes line to dry. Sheets and towels were stiff and scratchy. Lol..I was born in 1955 so watching these videos brings back childhood memories of tougher yet simpler way of living..our 1st dish washer had to be rolled up to the kitchen sink where a hose was attached to the faucet. Two hours later dishes were done..lol..
Rebeccca I was born 55 Maytag ringer washers were made to last, once through to wash once through to rinse then out to clothes line, clothes pins, I know exactly how to hang everything so little wrinkles, and on to folding ironing table called a mangle. In 62 my mom got her dream kitchen, the dishawasher would get so hot we sat around it for warmth. Double side fridge, freezer small but built in ice maker. Microwave one of the first, my mom wouldn't use it,it scared her. Took years before she trusted one. All the technology and still no free time
My mother used a top-loading twin tub until her death in 2002. I continued using her machine until it broke down in 2013. I could have replaced it with the exact same model…the manufacturer was still making them, but I bought a front loading fully automatic instead. The washing was always, and still is, dried outside pegged on the line. I live in the UK, you time your washing to coincide with good drying weather…although that’s not always possible. It rains a lot.
That flour dispenser looks exactly like the one I have in my hoosier, except mine is larger and works with a small crank at the bottom. I don't use it--I keep my flour in the fridge...lol! I'd still like that house and kitchen tho!
In summary, make the man think it's his idea 😅 My mother-in-law actually advised me to bring up sometime to your man when he's eating and then wait a week or two and he'll bring it up to you like it was his idea. Have I tried it? Maybe, maybe not. Haha
I do that all the time with a certain young man in my life---he and his family (wife and their nine children) mean a lot to me, and I think of him almost as the second son I never had---and it's rather funny to see it in action.
Yeah how did he get dressed and drive a car to work. Majority of men are not quite this stupid. Breaking a knob of a cabinet that you are leaning against the door, seriously?!?!
That's what I thought.🙉 American society helped men look like dumb bafoons even back then. It's a shame how we treat men in this country. Kids and women are shown to know everything and Dad looks like he can't even find his zipper. And women especially of today, wonder why men are the way they are? .... Because we don't encourage their manhood in design by God. Tragic!
@@christirose6813 Oh come on..they make women look silly at times too in movies..one dimensional only live to feed her man attitude. As far as men..watch some Westerns or stories that include coal mining..the men were not made to look like fools ...
+pygmiegoatsheepbeat He was mad that there was no hot water cuz Jimmy used all of it while taking a bath in the middle of the day. Parents still do that today, but back then they ran out of hot water a lot faster. Reminds me of 80s/90s kids getting yelled at to get off the internet so their parents could use the phone.
I'm a housewife! Cooking, baking, cleaning, taking care of my kiddos and getting taken care of my by amazing husband is the only way I'd want my life to be.
After living in brand new condos for years... i moved to a vintage 1940's cottage with the original kitchen.... yes it was nice to have the modern condo kitchens, but I learned to enjoy my vintage kitchen... things like looking out the window across the lawn while doing dishes by hand... Luckily my roommate always refills the ice trays!... At least I have a garbage disposal.... funny how little u really need !!!
My Dad was the youngest of a large family. When his mother passed away while he was young, he had to take over in the kitchen. Then he was in the Navy and fell into the hands of the chefs. He is a wonder in the kitchen. I learned from him.
Kolchak, the Night Stalker Darren McGavin. His one Season as Kolchak has brought me many years of TV joy just not when I was a kid but even now. I watch the reruns all the time. This short film was is even in his IMDb Darren McGavin May you R.I.P. Thank you for the entertainment.
People comment about sexism or economics in this thread, but no one seems to address the important issue. Why doesn't the wife just remodel her kitchen instead of moving?
Darren McGavin was the consummate actor. Whether playing awesome reporter Carl Kolchak in the old Night Stalker series, Ralphie's Dad in 'A Christmas Story' or poor old George in this hilarious film he was excellent.
I'll be damned if that isn't the father from "A Christmas Story." This might as well have been his audition for the movie. It's basically the same character. Amazing.
My mother was born in 1921 and was obsessed with curling her hair and my hair and my sister’s hair. I look at these women’s hairstyles and I’m just like, holy crap! The hours put into screwing around and fussing with their hair. I remember the torture of my mother doing Tony home permanents on me and my hair just turned out like dirt fuzz. SOOO worth it 😆 When the 1970s hit I put a stop to that crap! No one was going to stick permanent wave lotion on my hair ever again! And I certainly wasn’t going to spend another day or night with rollers in my hair! Oh my God I was so glad to be away from that crap!😂😂😂
I hated home perms by tony the awful fumes. My mother and trimming my hair, she did such a bad job she let me wear her pearls to school, I looked miserable and pearls didn't help anyone but mom! She wouldn't go to store without lipstick and stockings and heels but would wear pin curlers in her hair. I never curl my hair,I cut my own, I don't wear make up but mascara and the only thing I refuse to leave the house without putting street clothes on,no grubby ts no jogging pants or sweat shirts, and brushing my teeth, I might run into a movie star lol.
So hubby doesn't know how to put a pot on to simmer, but he's the one to consult about the kitchen remodel while the wife quietly watches from a distance.
Ha ha! I noticed that too! 😂 As if her input wouldn't be obvious, much less required! But I guess "building and designing things" falls into what THE MEN do in that world. Sooo bizarre.😂😂😂😮😩😩😭😭😭
I also love how necessary that shutter is in the wall between the kitchen and eating area / dining room that "the wives" use to peak in on "the men" and how well the wives' plan is working. You know, to "check in" on what's going on in there. It was literally inches away from the kitchen entry from the dining room.😂
Darren McGavin's not the only name in this; Marsha Hunt had worked steadily in feature films in the 1940s but had participated in a radio program against the Hollywood Blacklist called "Hollywood Fights Back," in 1950 and protested the House Un-American Activities Committee and was subsequently blacklisted from having a movie career in the 1950s. She turned to television acting and activism after that. Oh yeah, she's also still alive as of June 1, 2021, at age 103, one of the last Golden Age Hollywood stars.
My grandfather acted totally helpless every time my grandmother would be out of town. She would leave frozen dinners for him to warm up, and instant coffee. He was a firefighter chief for chrissakes -- was gone a week at a time at the station, and would regularly cook full meals for everyone there. He was far from helpless. But men got away with so much more back then.
In the first scene the woman had on a silk flower pin. My mother had the same one. They were violets. I remember the stems . !!! Now somebody will comment : " No one cares about your mother's damn floral pin ". 😄

elderly poodle🤗I care about your Mothers damn flower 🌺 pin! My Grandmother had one also! And I would love to get into her jewelry case and play dress up! Oh the memories!
That "automatic flour dispenser" was a common feature in the even older style "Hoosier Cabinets" from the turn of the century. They were free-standing cabinets that came well before built in kitchen cabinets became needed and popular in the 30's and 40's. And George probably could have got that kitchen cabinet open a lot easier if he stopped leaning on the doors while pulling on the knobs! LOL! And what about the new kitchen in their new house at the end? Would have been nice to show that too!
I just married a nice young girl from Thailand and that's exactly what she is. A house wife and soon-to-be mother. I do not want her to work over here in the states I want her to stay at home and be that doting housewife like back in the 50s
@@thatguyjimmie Including the addiction to benzodiazepines and institutionalization for “hysteria” prevalent among 50s housewives? Look it up, the 50s weren’t really great for any adult.
I just love how he tries to open the cupboard while pressing it with the other hand at 7:00. Those videos are full of humor and people simply playing dumb
uh-oh. I'm officially a 1950s housewife with no husband, and a job. I have a washer and dryer, and I love drying my clothes in all-weather with my electric dryer. I always thought I had a weirdly enthusiastic attitude about my appliances. I get it now. I Now understand my collection of hats and gloves. maybe I should just get a girdle and get it over with.
Maybe if you'd grown up on a farm before indoor plumbing or rural electrification (like many of these women did), you'd understand why they got so excited over hot running water or an electric clothes dryer. My mother had to do laundry the old school way, boiling it over an outdoor fire (they used lye soap!), squeezing it thru a mangle and hanging it outside when the weather was dry and in the kitchen when it stormed. She's a little younger than the women in this video, but was barely 2 generations removed from covered wagons and frontier homesteads. Right now we're closer to the year 2050 than 1950, so it's easy to forget the enormous changes they witnessed in their lifetimes that we can't really comprehend from our vantage point.
What is wrong with appreciating, and being grateful for, the conveniences you have? I don’t think you’re weird at all, Madam Maiden, I think your attitude is fantastic.
Hold up! Back the truck up. Stop the movie. GRAPE JELLY AND MUSTARD?! On a baked ham? Good GOD that's revolting! Everyone else is talking about the out dated views on women and men and the horrible friend who just brushed over the fact that her buddy's mother is sick and just said 'Look! Sounds good to me, its basically the same flavors as a monte cristo sandwich, (mustard, jelly, ham, turkey, swiss, all melted and delicious on a toasted bun) So good!

These people spent their childhood in The Great Depression and adolescences or early 20’s getting through WWII. Look what they finally have in the 1950’s.
What a dream house with huge free space around it. And the kitchen - dreamlike too. The kitchen would beat many modern ones still today. And the two women - well dressed, slim, in good shape. The two men also. Nice film.
Not to be critical, but using the term "mouth breather" to imply someone is of lower intelligence is, in of itself, ignorant. There is no connection between mouth breathing and intelligence. For example, when you have plugged sinuses, does your IQ drop significantly? Should we then call you a mouth breather?
@@debtoralive4693mouth breathers are considered to have low conscientiousness because they dont realize how obnoxious their breathing is. Also they usually chew with their mouths open.
I know this is a commercial from the 50s, but lol my parents are the exact opposite of these people XD My dad is the one that spends a great deal of his free-time in the kitchen. He's the cook. My mom can't cook lol. On the other hand, my mom (an engineer) does the technical stuff around the house. She puts things together and fixes things. The power-drill in the garage is hers. I once saw my dad use a power drill to try to put together a bed as a surprise for my mom when she got home from a business trip. And he was so frustrated and it was weird to see lol. As for me (a female), I can't do much outside of academia tbh lol.

Oh boy it isnt as wonderful as you think it is. If your husband abused you, you would have to put up with it; for women it would be impossible to live without a man so they would often miserably do their job as a housewife. Sad reality of the 50's
@@AwsomeKat777 How old are you? 20? 25? You know NOTHING! The 1950s/1960s were the high point of American wealth and culture. There were great jobs (with benefits and pensions) for everyone. The average family could own their own home in a decent neighborhood. Cities were livable. Crime was rare. Gas was cheap. You could travel anywhere. Households could thrive with only one income. "Racism" in most places was incidental. The races got along much better than today. That wonderful world is now history. What's left will soon be ruined by people like you.
The minute I saw the guy doing actual work in the kitchen, I knew this film had to be a fake. In fact, I'm not sure my husband even knows we HAVE a kitchen. It's just a magical place from whence I magically produce food. For all he knows, dishes are self-cleaning, and the trash evaporates into some new-fanged techno-shoot, eventually being absorbed into space and creating the clouds that dot the sky.

Ahahaha!!!
@Patrick. What blows my mind too are young women getting married who have as much idea of basic housekeeping as your Dad!

Rebbie Swift what else do you remember?

Also Racism. Lots and lots of Racism. Black folks usually don't want to time travel back further than the 80s lmao
Oh boy it isnt as wonderful as you think it is. If your husband abused you, you would have to put up with it; for women it would be impossible to live without a man so they would often miserably do their job as a housewife. Sad reality of the 50's
@Joeyblondewolf2 I be happy too being a housewife!! Men knew what it was to provide, protect and lead.
@Wren Linnet You didn't live through that era. All that you know about it came from your man-hating feminist professors and books.
I love the short refrigerators with chrome handle.
Housewarming party. Wow such a good memory.
OMG!!! LOL That is hilarious! XD So well thought out too. Thank you.
jorasparents Well, I sure hope you are well-compensated...or your maid is! Shame on his mother.
Hahaha, I love this.
jorasparents LOL he must be related to my Dad! that is funny!
It's not funny....it's SAD & pathetic. Boys should be raised to know wtf a kitchen is, & how to do laundry. AND--women need to know how to work on cars. I do both--don't any of YOU?
This stuff is amazing! My great grandparents were 30, my grandparents were 7, my parents were born 23 years after this show! Keep this stuff coming !
"I have to make things easy for them".... oh boy...that's why the men never learned to grow up
@smadge100 Sexism isn't a real word. It's a hex designed to cause division and infighting of the holy couple of the dominant man and submissive woman. The way it should be.
@Tala Habern stated that as truth, the heck do you mean?

They grown when they payin' bills for the woman to stay home. Nothing childish about that.
