Quarter Horses are some of the most versatile equines on the planet. Compact, well-proportioned Quarter Horses have sloping shoulders that give them a long stride. The withers are well-defined but not too high, and the muscular hindquarters can power the horses forward in an instant. The broad, deep chests allow for the robust heart and lungs that make Quarter Horses such outstanding athletes. Knowledgeable equestrians intending to sell a Quarter Horse will also refer to the breed’s intelligence, beauty, and ability to spin and turn on a dime. They are said to have an inborn skill when it comes to working with cattle.

Hi, I'm 11 and have experience with horses but have never owned one before. Do you think I should get one?

I owned a QH for 28 years. Lots of experience with him. He was a gelding and one of the smartest, most adept animals I ever owned, having owned dogs, cats and tamed a squirrel. Horses are expensive. Not horrendously so, but be prepared to have either a home for him (and being social, they really need for their own good psychology as a herd animal, a friend or pasture buddy) or pay to have him/her boarded. You will also have farrier (shoeing, trimming, corrective foot care) and preventive medical (veterinary care) assistance. Paying for preventative veterinary work is far preferable to being lax about it. An ill equine is far more expensive than doing preventative maintenance (like a car or truck). Disposition: once I was asked what the "horse mentality" was like? Have you owned a cat? Have you owned a dog? Take 50% feline and 50% canine and meld them together and you have a horse. Always have a farrier or vet take a look at any prospective horse you are thinking of purchasing. Be sure those people are independent and neutral (objective) about their appraisal. Make certain you have a written contract for the purchase. You can get away with not having a trailer, but having a truck is highly suggested. Feed might be required, hay bags of grain, specialized food might be necessary in older horses. Sadly, as when you buy a car or house, be sure to deal with honest, legitimate people in your equine transaction. Does this help you? I owned a wonderful Quarter Horse with a fine brain and excellent disposition. You will be surprised at how intelligent they are. They pick up on your body language, gestures and vocal inflections 100%. On that measuring scale, they are smarter than most humans. They also listen better!

Horses on alert look like Arabians, but there is a fair amount of Arabian blood in quarer horses.

I don't get why horse = tool for riding. Wanted to learn about the horse, not about how good it is for riding and racing.
