- When trumpeter Terell Stafford was nearing the completion of his classical trumpet studies in college, he was also developing an interest in jazz.

I’m glad everyone recognizes Terell’s great talent. I had the opportunity to see it early because I was his high school band director. As a student, Terell showed tremendous potential, but I had no idea he would turn out to be the distinguished player and educator that he is. I am proud to have been a part of his early music life.
Martin, I was a trumpet student at one of the other schools and had to compete against Terell at the annual jazz festival, auditioning for the all-county band, etc. He was also a really nice guy and positive about other player's contributions whenever I was around him. I can tell you, along with my friends who also competed against him and played alongside him, we talked about his abilities and suspected this is the kind of musician he would become.
I had him as an instructor at Litchfield Jazz Camp years ago, I remember him saying he had to hide when practicing jazz when at Rutgers in a classical program as if it was criminal......... I hope that thinking has disappeared........he was a terrific teacher.
Terell did mention this during his performance in our studios. You can listen to his interview here. Thanks for watching!
