Must have watched this 100 times. What I love about Roy and his solos are the melodies and the phrasing. Dude just making up amazing licks on the fly, giving notes space to breathe, not just climbing up and down scales and modes. Was fortunate enough to see him in London before he passed. You are sorely missed. RIP

Have you heard Roy Hargrove's rendition of "I Remember Clifford"--played in 2007 at the Internationale Jazzwoche Burghausen in Germany? If you fear ghosts, don't listen. It will haunt you.

Hearing Jon play Soulful on Jazz Night at age 33, which brought up so much emotion, I came back to this version of 21 year-old Jon with a mentor. Roy will always be praised for raising capable successors.
Roy Hargrove has such a big sound and a commanding presence. But if you ever see him sit in at the jam sessions in NY, the dude's like 5'2! It's crazy!
This song is my happy space. If you are truly a lover of music, jazz especially, then you will agree that this is a masterful work of art. Pure talent. ❤
I love watching Roy enjoying the solos. Makes me happy! We talk about this in our jazz group - listening - enjoying etc. sometimes it happens but often, in performance, everyone is focused on themselves. And yes - magic can happen with just a snare drum and couple of cymbals!
"Yeah that's gonna... that's gonna work alright." I chime in everytime being like "YES IT WILL." absolutley amazing. RIP to a legendary purveyor of music
Roy Hargrove used to come to Chicago on Thanksgiving weekend every year (2006-2008 roughly), in 2009 he came on New Year's weekend. I saw him at the Jazz Showcase the night after NYE, and they played an amazing set. They got an enthusiastic standing ovation that didn't stop. When they took the bandstand again for the encore, "Soulful" is what they played and it was simply the best thing I've ever heard. He dedicated it to Chicago..."...this is what I think of you, Chicago...Soulful."
Legend Roy playing behind an orange office chair, Justin Robinson cooking music on saxophone as always, the young Jonathan Batiste killing it with a f... truly detuned straight piano... Music and harmony will live forever Missing you Roy, missing you Guys.
Big loss for us Jazz lovers. He contributed so much and his musicality made my head work better. Everyone who played with him had a great experience! I saw him, live, several times and he was ALWAYS great. i think his influence will live on in those who worked for him. So sorry this happened.

I was fortunate to see Roy live several times between 2009 (the year of this video) and 2017. I was utterly moved every single time. Had a few insightful conversations with the brother too. No matter how MANY times I listen to this I ALWAYS forget that the drummer doesn’t have a kick drum until his solo. Sounds so full and complete 😌
So right
So true
He doesn't need one. Montez is one of my favourite drummers of all time.
I think this tune is so heavily driven by that bass groove that a kick drum would just get in the way.
