He was made fun of by being an American who knew very little about soccer, and he shocked everyone by taking Richmond to the top divisions of English soccer with how much he actually knew. That’s how Leeds United should work.

Jesse is a cool dude, during his (short) stint at Leipzig he randomly showed up in a supporters pub one day and had a beer with the fans. Heard similar stories from his time in Salzburg. Not a whole lot of managers do that nowadays. Sadly tactics-wise he's a one-trick pony and completely freezes up when his approach is countered 😕
Going to a fan bar might have helped ingratiate himself with some fans, but being from the US means he was always going to struggle maintaining that support if the team wasn’t showing improvement.
as a leeds fan who had to live through this nightmare he gives a pretty fair perspective .staying up under jessie felt like living a miricle and the 22/23 season felt like hell so very glad as a club we are past that
Realistically you're a championship club who won't spend money. Marsch wasn't your issue, the americans funny enough have proven to be since they left beyond your club. The team just doesn't have the depth to make a prolonged stay in the prem and never will until they convince young prem talent to stick it out for more than a season to try and stay up.
@@TheGLORY13 What the fuck are you talking about? Marsch's tactics were utterly diabolical. It was literally get everyone to stand in the middle, kick it forwards even if you're going to lose the ball and don't bother defending the wings. It was too easy to play against and nowhere near creative enough. His answer to why things were going wrong was - "they're stressed". The guy is an absolute clown. They players that were brought into his squad were an absolute disaster and have proven themselves to be a disgrace after jumping ship immediately after taking the club down. Especially the Americans. Adams has never played, Aaronson isn't wanted by anyone and McKennie can frankly just fuck off after his embarrassing display for us. I miss Bielsa at Leeds like you wouldn't believe. Hindsight only strengthens these feelings. Real mistake he personally made was not abuse the Prem rules and get matches called off/delayed on Covid claims (e.g. like Arsenal and other teams did in that season multiple times). If only we really did "sacka da board"
Really loved how you went a bit deeper into the tactics in this video essay to show not just that marsh’s team didn’t win, but WHY they didn’t win. Awesome stuff man
Yo can you do a Union Berlin Video? From 2. Bundesliga to Champions League in 5 years abd then the sudden drop off to relegation fight althought they brought in stars like Bonucci, Volland and Gosens. Would be an interesting video.
Union Berlin getting relegated this season if they lose? Reminds me of Villarreal in 11/12. They did this after crashing out in the Champions League group stage, IIRC.
short story, those transfers were the reason. While I don't lay it at the feet of those players instead of management, these players completely ruined the payroll structure and came into a club and wrecked the hierarchy in the locker room.
It was going to be tough for anyone to follow Bielsa, Marsch didn't help himself by bringing in a Weston McKennie that didn't seem interested, Brandon Aaronson that just runs a lot, it's not an American thing, nobody had a problem with Tyler Adams, Marsch's biggest problem is he's quite one dimensional, he knows that Red Bull way and that's all, he needs to figure out a plan B
You thread the needle nicely here, and I can definitely see elements of Tac & Ellis’ perspectives on it and I applaud you for speaking with them both. You pretty much summed it up perfectly. Marsch was not 100% to blame, but his rigid (and ineffective) tactics and lack of adjustments got found out quickly and you did well to point out that his constant optimism got incredibly tiresome, even for an American Leeds supporter who wanted this to succeed badly. That being said, the board should bear the majority of the blame. For not sacking Marsch sooner, for letting him get his players in and giving him one game past the transfer window and then sacking him, for not buying a LB and a ST (which we all knew we needed all the way back in the summer heading into that season), not shoring up a horrible back line, firing Marsch without having a realistic replacement lined up…the list goes on and on. Thankful this chapter is over. Looking forward to Wembley and heading back where we belong!

Before clicking, I thought this was going to be about why Leeds was popular in US & Canada in the 90's. Growing up I remember seeing Leeds hats and jerseys very common.
Having survived the Marsch era personally, I'd agree he only had a set style but that's a lot of managers tbf. I think his biggest mistakes were making comments regarding Bielsa's training methods, accusing him of "over training" players, it pissed off a lot of Leeds fans and was used as a stick to beat him with when some players seemed like they couldn't go 100% for 90 minutes. He also made some rather interesting training ground changes, removing player rest facilities to build a larger press conference room was a very bold choice in the summer and again left some people feeling he was out of touch. I do genuinely believe he could make a good international manager though, he talks a good game and does seem like he can motivate a team at times, hope Canadian fans are ready to hear how "the goal is in the middle of the pitch" to justify a narrow playing style though.
Fun fact-depending on which source u believe the reason Leeds wear a white home shirt is because Don Revie changed them in the 70s to emulate Real Madrid so the ‘Walmart Los Blancos’ tag is fitting
Serious question are all RB school coaches just unable to admit their mistakes and adapt to their circumstances? I’m living through the same thing with Schmidt at Benfica it’s killing me
They are looking pretty solid being in a play off final right now and if they can get a Marcelo or a Patrick Viera or maybe keep there guy now next season. If they get promoted and play there cards right I think they could stay up. I mean they thrashed Norwich 4 - 0 at home in the semis. This is coming from a Manchester city fan btw.
Thanks for the video, as a Leeds fan this was a pretty accurate depiction of what went on that season, March was terrible he had no clue about how to change a formation to get the best out the team, he went from a team who all the best players were wingers to the narrow "Penis" formation as we all called it, I can't put all the blame on him he should have been replaced long before he was sacked.
He did change things up, it didn't matter because your #9 was terrible and the only other scoring option was jack harrison, who couldn't score. Then your Center backs were completely terrible and you were relying on a 22 year old 120lb. midfielder to carry.
Marsch’s arrogance set the perception of US soccer back a decade. People claimed bielsa forced a style of football when in reality it was the style that best fit his players. He brought in big club rejects with decent technical ability but athletic deficiencies and created a way for them to be effective against the biggest teams England. Marsch came in, took Bielsa recruits and ran an advanced zonal press that required athletes. The results were ultimately disastrous and he often blamed players after losses.
Wasn't exactly a big bottle this season. They did bottle by losing to Aston Villa and West Ham and not beating Manchester City. Apart from that, commendable effort 👏. So, Arsenal have a much smaller bottle this time.

The plot twist of Ted Lasso was that despite Ted not knowing about Football, he knew people and how to get the best out of them. That was how Ted was able to unite his team behind him. Plus the fact Coach Beard is a complete sports nerd and learned every Football tactic he could before coming to the UK and that is how you get the Ted Lasso show. In real life something like Ted Lasso maybe could work but just not at the Premiere League Level or even Championship.
Tbh, I felt Leeds United fans are the second most delusional fanbase after Man United or maybe Arsenal. What's worse is that they have been this delusional since at least the 1970s, back during the Don Revie "Dirty Leeds" era. When they achieve success, they like to shxttalk their rivals, and when they don't, they start becoming delusional while throwing people under the bus. People forget Peter Ridsdale's Champions League gamble and it's ultimate failure was in part fuelled by Leeds fans' unfounded sense of superiority and a belief they're better than what their team actually were. In short, since the 1970s, Leeds certainly has been the most chaotic football club in England
An American manager that hops around 5 leagues then makes it to the prem and think motivation and 1 tactic will work.... sounds like an FM save gone wrong lol
The Pub I go to is shared between Chelsea, Liverpool, & Leeds (What a Deadly Combination). So when Leeds USA vs Chelsea came up, it was straight Banter. Especially when we were 3-0 down and I was quite happy for Marsch. He got a statement win. It was an interesting time. Ted Lasso is fresh out of Season 2, Welcome to Wrexham in Full Swing, and Leeds USA. Felt sad that the Experiment Failed though.
Atlético de Madrid tried doing the same thing with previous club Club San Luis Potosí by turning it into atlético de San Luis (liga mx club). I used to believe that they new atlético club would compete head to head with the other teams in liga mx but it turned into a failure that is usually around 13-15th place. They would be easily relegated when promotion and relegation potentially comes back to liga mx when the liga mx expansion (league 2) goes to fifa to sue liga mx and FMF for monopoly or something else.
And now here he is managing our national side. Just got his first win today at the Copa America, but oh my. Hopefully he's fully learned from his mistakes at Leeds😬
We will have to see on this one. Canada's Soccer team plays like Leeds. They can outplay and out chance opponents but can't score, and then give up stupid chances. Exactly how they lost to Uruguay and Suarez score in the 92 minute. I'm hoping that he has learned to adjust his tactics when time calls for it.
but look how far March got Canada in the Copa America semi finals in your first tournament despite international management isn’t as full on it’s still pretty crazy
@@bloodsin In 20/21 Sevilla only had 4 points less than Atletico month before season ended(but only won 2 in last 6), in 21/22 first half Sevilla played realy well and they only had 4 points less than Real Madrid in January but they crumbled in the second half barely securing top 4 spot and that bad run of form conveyed into 22/23(until Medilibar came) and 23/24 season
See, gengen pressing is genuinely a very good tactic for any team. The problem with leeds this season was that that was their only tactic. March was incapable of pivoting from it even if it wasn't working
Great video!! Long time fan of ur channel and Leeds so its awesome to see an essay like this from you! Fingers crossed we don’t bottle the playoff final and maybe the American dream could make a return 😂
Some correction, Aaronson was not really a Jesse signing, Leeds had been after him for awhile and reportedly Bielsa was keen on him, Also, Bamford was the most frustrating thing I had to experience during that year. I wish you had gone over the Garcia games more because they were something else. He started out strong with a few good results, and then it crashed and burn spectacularly, losing by 2-5 goals like 6 matches in a row, until he was sacked
What happened to Bamford? His first season he was unbelievable, I stopped paying attention after their first season back in the prem thanks to Liverpool being good again, and then not so good again and so I didn’t watch their matches. How did he go from being prolific, relatively, to so bad?
Picked up a bad recurring injury and everytime it looked over it came back - he only recovered fully this season. Plus he usually needs a good run of games to find his form and the injury meant that couldn't happen. His form has always been patchy too - good runs then bad runs. That said even in his bad patches he usually made things work for other players - either with his movement off the ball or just by being a physical presence up front (even though he's not great at it - it still frees up space for midfielders and wingers). For all the shit thrown at Bamford in that second Marsch season (some of it fairly) - he wasn't fit enough to be playing in the first place for most of it, you can blame the board for not signing another striker and you can blame Marsch for Rodrigo getting injured in a baffling and completely pointless sub appearance against Accrington.
As an Englishman who supports Manchester United so I love seeing Leeds suffer. Although Marsch was given a poor hand. Fans who love the old boss, the best players sold in the summer and not replaced with players that were as good. Leeds had a poor team that Bielsa got playing above what you would expect.
in the recap of when you talked about where the americans are now you make it seem like aaronson didn’t do anything in berlin, however he made those fans fall in love with him for his effort and creativity

Never thought I'd see loggie bear in a maqwell video
As a canadian football fan it gonna be rough for us with this dude as our Manager pray for us.
canada got 4th in their first copa america 😂💀
@@imabitmid guess he was not bad at all then.
Nah, Scousers and Rent Boys fans are more delusional
Canada been balling tho
Ok but I still love Jesse Marsch ❤🇨🇦
I believe the signing of Big Sam was because Javi Gracia has such a bad reaction to losing to Bournemouth that they felt they had to sack him
An American manager that hops around 5 leagues then makes it to the prem and think motivation and 1 tactic will work.... sounds like an FM save gone wrong lol
Also I was sad when the Tyler Adams to Chelsea Deal fell through. He had that Dawg in him! Too bad for his Health.
That was really entertaining, honest, and circumspect. Well done @Maqwell
You should probably do a vid on Nathan Jones at Southampton
And now here he is managing our national side. Just got his first win today at the Copa America, but oh my. Hopefully he's fully learned from his mistakes at Leeds😬
We will have to see on this one. Canada's Soccer team plays like Leeds. They can outplay and out chance opponents but can't score, and then give up stupid chances. Exactly how they lost to Uruguay and Suarez score in the 92 minute. I'm hoping that he has learned to adjust his tactics when time calls for it.
5:38 Super Monkey Ball 2 🤌
but look how far March got Canada in the Copa America semi finals in your first tournament despite international management isn’t as full on it’s still pretty crazy
Can you please make a video about Sevilla downfall? From title race to relegation battle to Europa league win to relegation battle again
title race? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Sir Maqwell this is what they call Good Content
This is what people want to watch not political hot takes
Amazing video! Includes great information.
40:06 it did age poorly
the jinxer did it again!
See, gengen pressing is genuinely a very good tactic for any team. The problem with leeds this season was that that was their only tactic. March was incapable of pivoting from it even if it wasn't working
Great video. Walmart Los Blancos has me wheezing. Keep up the good work.
When Is the arsenal bottled the League (again) video coming
"Jesse! Jesse! we need to keep Leeds in the premier league Jesse!"
Can I get a Napoli video describing what happened to their title defense? Literally nobody is talking about it
1:34 Mario and Luigi Bowser Inside Story ost mentioned 🔥🥶🥹
Yo that timing of that Ad was gold 😂 I thought u we’re gonna say sacked
Great video!! Long time fan of ur channel and Leeds so its awesome to see an essay like this from you! Fingers crossed we don’t bottle the playoff final and maybe the American dream could make a return 😂
Lionel Messi is somewhere in this
Nice video. Would you consider doing more content on german football?
it's a good day when Maxwell uploads
Did my man just sat west ham City ar 25:55 threw me off guard so much still great video though
Streets won’t forget Janos Balazs
Maqwells humor is too good dude 😭
Leeds fan here, i'm used to Americans shitting on Leeds, but this was a very fair analysis of the situation, great job.
Some correction, Aaronson was not really a Jesse signing, Leeds had been after him for awhile and reportedly Bielsa was keen on him,
Also, Bamford was the most frustrating thing I had to experience during that year.
I wish you had gone over the Garcia games more because they were something else. He started out strong with a few good results, and then it crashed and burn spectacularly, losing by 2-5 goals like 6 matches in a row, until he was sacked
Then crazy thing is in Ted Lasso the Richmond Way was that he would change tactics and they would succeed 😭😭
Thanks Maqwell for reminding me of the trauma that I went through as a Leeds fan
why are we all, as maqwellites, obsessed with janos balasz and unbroken persona
in the recap of when you talked about where the americans are now you make it seem like aaronson didn’t do anything in berlin, however he made those fans fall in love with him for his effort and creativity
creativity? he has no technique
@@choco-une this is coming from the same man that said leverkusen will choke, move on big dawg
@@thommiekaplanuhhhhhhm yh he was right
Shout out to you for having reasonably priced merch!
Rip janoz balasz the name
Your name will be missed❤
As a Bournemouth fan I loved getting Tyler Adams from Leeds.
As a Philadelphia Union fan I hope Brendan Aaronson does better going forward.
JANOS BALAZS 🗣🗣
Who is he talking about at 2:27? Never heard of her before

They should have free shipping for jerseys to the US for more support. That ended up being the reason I didn't buy one lol.
36:55 the Dallas stray is straight foul ain’t have to do us like that🫠😂
