Terra is glowing of magic in this visual masterpiece! No wonder the Empire is after her.

Wooooooow, this is insaneee! The part at 0:51 invoked a certain nostalgic feeling inside me, I swear to God I have hear a REALLY similar note pattern like this. It's most likely from some other game or an anime I watched, but I never played FF6. :)

💓 I discover your channel late. And it revives the magic of FFVI that I had forgotten. The orchestration is the expression of your passion, we can feel it very well. Bravo and many thanks 💗

Terra is easily the most fascinating FF character for me, and my perception of her has changed dramatically since I first played the game. Growing up, I was nauseated by her simplistic "I want to know what love is, NOW!" obsession (she even bothers Celes with that question while they're preparing for battle, which made me almost hate her at first), but there's something very primal and childlike about it. I can believe she's stuck on understanding love because she emotionally has nowhere else to go, and that she's still a child grasping for the most fundamental human relationship.
She was the product of a union between two people from cultures that wanted to have nothing (friendly) to do with one another. Her mother fled her society, and her father's community wanted her ejected back into it, and for her parents to not associate in any way. But her parents opened themselves up and trusted and accepted one another, and birthed Terra as a symbol of a hope for peace and understanding between their peoples. Then, while still an infant, her mother was killed and her father kidnapped, tortured, and exploited to make weapons, and she was raised by the man responsible for that. What was her childhood like? Are we never told because she doesn't know? Does the game start where it does because that's as far back as her regressed memory ever goes? Did the Empire rely on the Slave Crown because she grew up actively resisting them? If she was raised by the Emperor, you'd think she could be convinced to serve him as any other loyal soldier, so why rob her of her own free will? Does she have an identity beyond a "Magitek-riding Imperial witch" who unconsciously burns down cities and people on behalf of her own abusers? Did she have a personality while growing up, and is it still present inside her, or did the Empire destroy it and leave a blank slate? The more Terra explores her past and her nature, the more these disturbing wrinkles are revealed. And when she starts waking up and is rescued by the good guys, even THEY recruit her to use in their war. They at least ask, but if you follow the story from her point of view, it's ridiculous the pressure that Banon et al are putting on her. I can easily imagine that she reaches a point where she DOESN'T want to learn anything more about herself, as everything just gets worse for her. By the time Celes and company run into her again in Ruined Mobliz, she's broken. She's the oldest of the surviving children of the town, and yet far more emotionally immature than Duane or Katrin even.
I never liked Kefka as the villain of FFVI, and I eventually figured out why: He's a cop-out, stock villain in a story that isn't at all about him. He just waltzes in periodically, evils up the place, and you have to hit him so he goes away for a while. The story of FFVI is Terra's story. She shouldn't have been the villain, per se, but the plot and the resolution should have revolved around her, and the struggle shouldn't have been against a crazy man, but against fear and a history of exploitation and mistrust. The heroes - and "human" society in general - should have been fighting to finally get back to the place Maduin and Madeleine started off at twenty years earlier, trying to bridge the (re-opened) chasm of trust between the human and Esper world. Instead, Kefka breaks everything, you have to break him, the Espers disappear from the world, and Terra's instantly happy again. The game hints at a much, much more complicated character arc than that. And, for her, it all begins when she wakes up, sick and confused, in the home of a stranger, at the far end of the world, in a city she just attacked, and is then immediately thrown back out into the cold to run for her life, before she even knows what's going on.
"Awakening" is a song that begs for a deep, melancholy interpretation, like this one. I love how this conveys Terra's innocence and primal yearnings, but also prologues a mystery. I feel it's emotionally the main theme of the game (much as "Anxious Heart" is for VII) - the characters all have to open up to one another and help each other get past their past traumas. And humanity and the Espers (at least in the version of the story I wish they had gone with) have to open up and explore one another again, in order to recover from their tragic past.
Anyway, hearing this arrangement (six or seven times as I'm writing this :p) just brings back all sorts of memories and daydreams of this game.

I think of that question about love as something that she needs to answer before she's able to make a decision about who she is and what is right vs wrong. From the beginning, she's tormented about understanding ethics/morality. Though she's naturally a pacifist, people are asking her to fight, but she's reluctant to fight for a "human" cause without first understanding what humanity is even about. It seems like she intuitively perceives "love" as the ultimate human "purpose" and, therefore, her own purpose. In a way, asking about it right before a big battle makes sense, since she feels deeply that battling in the first place is wrong- for anyone. Maybe she thinks that learning about love beforehand could prevent her from making a vital mistake, since love, as a principle, directly opposes war.
Later on, she becomes a complete pacifist while she cares for the children, and in doing so, finally understands the "love" principle. Once she has fully absorbed this knowledge/experience and is reunited with her friends from before, (though reluctant) she's able to fight again because she is finally able to confidently decide for herself what is right vs wrong and has come to understand the need to protect those who cannot protect themselves.

I like Kefka as a villian, because like so many people of the real world, they desire power not for a goal but for it's own sake. They are often quite removed socially and emotionally from the depths of peoples lives who they affecting.
Kefka rarely pays much attention to the various protagonists beyond a casual interest or vague annoyance, and just like so many powerful people in this world, real human beings are a side attraction to him, if he notices them at all

    • @williamfugerer3366
      @williamfugerer3366 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Not to mention, Kefka is literally the ONLY villain in FF history who just wanted to destroy the world because he could, and succeeded. He split the world in two just to watch it burn. He was purely psychotic with no real motive. The only FF villain to do so.

    • @CharroArgentino
      @CharroArgentino 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

That's a kinda simplistic view on Terra and Kefka as a whole, still. Kefka is the perfect villain for VI, he's the main representation of conflict in a game about a bunch of people involved in a war they want to play no part in; he's the exact opposite of what Terra is. Terra is all about love, kindness and willpower (aka pushing foward no matter what); Kefka believes there's no point to anything in life since everything eventually ends, and the experiments done to him (artificially giving him magic) drove him insane, pushing his ideal to the extreme, to the point where he wants to destroy everything just to prove his point.
FFVI is the story of several people, including Kefka's, they're all mixed into something they don't want to. If you want to you can argue that the game is more about this or that character, it's not fair to make it revolve only around Terra, despite she being the most complex of the bunch, she's a single actress involved in a much bigger scenario; remember, the planet was at war, and they all have to deal with it at the same time they have to deal with their own traumas. You basically want to change the story of the game to fit Terra and only Terra when the game was designed to be the first FF without a clear protagonist. For example, Terra and the bunch did try to re-open the bridge between Espers and humans, it just couldn't be, they all die, and that's one of the biggest tragedies during the game, it fits the themes of the story, everything revolves about tragedy, love and finding your place in the world. Terra just didn't "become instantly happy", she was already happy when she "adopted" a bunch of kids, because she found her place, understood love, and yada yada, but Kefka was still there, and his arc is the last one to get closed, hence, they have to deal with him; you notice that Terra is at her absolute strongest (mentally) when confronting Kefka at the end, she had no more doubts, she was already complete.
I, for one, think Terra's character arc is great, she makes it her goal to find love (since it opposes the direct thing going on in the world: war), and she does it, not by having the cliché of finding a man (like I feared at first would happen with Leo), but by finding a more pure type of love, the love of life and nurture, in a time where everything was dying. Having her go from a broken, confused mess into a lovely strong willed pacifist mom is just fantastic. Could her arc be longer? sure, but the game is already freaking massive for a SNES game, and giving her more time would mean taking away from all the others that also had a lot to say into the whole thing going on. If they ever remake the game, I would love to have more of Terra's struggle, since she's just the best ever, but with the limited resources they had at the time, I think her story is perfectly fine.

I am listening to this right at a point in my life where this music explains more than words, and I am crying, because I can relate to Terra so much / she doesn’t understand love or herself well, but yet she can fight and love at the end of the game.

Every time I hear a new FF6 arrangement from you I tear up. Especially after reading your descriptions. Years ago I started to bury the more creative, carefree side of myself in an attempt to seek more financial stability and 'worldly' concerns. Thankfully I've not completely destroyed that part of myself, but I would consider it asleep. I'm hoping some day it will awaken, and I'll be able to figure out what my purpose in this world is. You're half a world away, and I know nothing of you beyond your music and what you write about from time to time, but it feels like you're the treasure I wish I could find - a kindred spirit who blossomed rather than was twisted by the machinery of the world. Thank you for this, and for all you post. Your music is a source of serenity and joy in what has become a bleak world for me.

RebeccaETripp: Every time I don't think you can possibly amaze me more, you manage to. I've been known in some circles to write long posts like that, and while most people don't read them in their entirety for the obvious practical reasons, I like to think that occasionally someone reads the whole thing and gets where I'm coming from. Know that I read every word of your reply, and understand exactly where you're coming from. I am happy to hear you were able to beat your demons back into submission where they belong. I truly hope you will always be victorious over the never ending struggle heartbreak brings. Know that no matter what you may or may not have accomplished in the world, you have achieved your goal with me. Your work has brought me so much joy, not only by resurrecting fond memories, but by giving me new ones.
I try so hard to not 'grow up' completely. It has become such a struggle in recent years, and I fear I'm not as strong as I used to be. But with the help of wonderful people like you, I know that at least some part of me will be able to keep that youthful, hopeful spirit. My hope is that one day I'll be stable enough to finally get back to what I feel I'm called to do: write, think, feel, explore... I'll get there. I have to. You are a shining example of why.
Thank you for being you, and for all that you do.

I'm another wayward soul tumbling in with the wind. Someone else who had fun times in the sandbox of ideas - and someone who went through things a lot more like the characters than I would wish on anyone else. I hope you and the others haven't had to experience that, but my gut tells me you have, same as me, to some degree.
You really arranged and mixed this well. Good samples, good dynamics, and good restraint. It's layered, embellished in just the right way, and says what it needs to say in more than one way. You also found a very good character image to convey what you were saying with your music. That's what's making me write to you, how well you captured the state of being where you realize you're a person with needs even if nobody will help you meet them yet, and that you are more than just a tool to their own ends. It makes me wonder what you've been through, or if you're just too sensitive for the world in its awfulness as it is, if not both.
I've gone through that, more than once. I'm now middle aged and facing looking at the next half of my life with some awareness of what life is really like. I've sought to understand love, and once I had some tenuous grasp of it, to have it reciprocated. For shame most people are fair-weather friends at best. When I was far too young, my first love died. Not long after I had to say goodbye to my mother. Under it all, I'm still just a person looking for someone to care about and be cared for in turn, same as you, same as Terra.
What's haunting to me is despite never even finishing this game, and having only faint memories, I'm deep into making a story in another genre that's so similar to how the plot and characters in this turned out it's unsettling. To find the right music to set a mood to write made me wander my way here, and to literally see a primordial echo of a character of mine stare me in the face was not what I expected. I'm now studying this masterpiece of hope and determination, if only to avoid too much overlap. And yet, it seems some themes are inevitable with certain stories, same as certain people, if either has a particular role to play. It's not just Terra I've accidentally remade, either - Celes, too and Shadow.
I find myself wondering just what sort of collective unconsciousness there is, to lean on Jung; what happened in our past as a people to make us think in such ways and recreate these themes and symbols and *feelings* despite a lack of casual connection.
I hope you're doing well. I hope that what experiences gave you the means to execute this are memories that teach, instead of terrorize. You are amazingly talented. Please continue down this path you've been on.

These characters are popular, in part, due to their archetypal nature. Terra can represent a very childlike (and primal) part of our imagination! She speaks to anyone who has bothered to question their innermost feelings, or to wonder about their "true" reason for being. But she's not the only character like that. These types are all over sci-fi and fantasy! Some great examples are Data, Odo and Seven from Star Trek, Leeloo from The Fifth Element, or Eleven from Stranger Things. I'm sure your characters will also express these ancient ideas in a novel and beautiful way. Anyway, thanks a lot for your comment! I'm glad my music resonated with your inner dialogue!

I love the way you have the flute (and other instruments!) tease us a bit before you let the flute break into the melody. @@RebeccaETripp I meant the Final Fantasy VI mod by the name of "A World Reborn," for the Steam edition of the game!!! I'm almost positive that it's the same arrangement... Hopefully the modders aren't using it without your permission!! (it sounds soooo good in-game though... I was in heaven...) Here's the link... when I click "Files" and download the core package to the original Steam game and play it, I hear this song in place of the original Terra's theme (and Idk, maybe the other music is yours too, or maybe they're borrowing from multiple different sources... idk! At least they're not making any money off the mod, I guess...) www.moddb.com/mods/final-fantasy-vi-a-world-reborn
But yeah, I'm serious about the Debussy thing, and I'm glad your heart sings at that compliment... because this is wonderful!!! Bravo!!!!
Oh, and here's a link to a youtube play-through of the mod... the time stamp should take you right to Terra and the first playing of this theme th-cam.com/video/5i1qjMUVRww/w-d-xo.html
In the game, they have the track listed as "Awakening," so I searched something like "Final Fantasy VI orchestrated soundtrack awakening," and that's how I landed on your video!

Terra is easily the most fascinating FF character for me, and my perception of her has changed dramatically since I first played the game. She has a really big past about her that she could not help, getting captured by the Empire and getting the slave crown put on her probably because she tried to resist the Empire at some point. She was forged by love between two completely different beings, that's what makes her so interesting and fascinating, if they ever remake FF6 I really want them to flesh out her character and make her very expressive.
    THANK YOU FOR SHARING!❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚

This tune is finally convincing me to play through the 6th Final Fantasy, today, which always seemed different due to the robot suits. Thanks for that! Also this is a Great Beautiful Lovely pick-me-up after being in a downed mood. Thank you Good Goddess! (and yes i mean you!)

It is possibly the best one. You'll enjoy it! (Trust me, it is still primarily fantasy, having only the same amount of "sci-fi" as FF4 and FF9). And thank you! ^_^v

I just discovered you and your talent ...honestly Im a fan of everything that is Final Fantasy, I looked for different covers of its OST, be it metal, orchestral anything ...and you are the missing piece of every types of cover I found. Its beautiful, amazing and relaxing at the same time. It brings me back a lot whenever I listen to your music and I want to thank you for it.

Powerful. It's funny to think about, how something in this music remains so magical. It transports us to another world, and another time. I wonder if that time is the spirit of our first experience with those characters and places; or of the person that we were back then. I don't know, but it certainly is moving in any case.

Even these short single pieces have become "medleys". While there are a sea of game remixes around, This is an artist who has mastered the interpretation form. Having a personal trademark of combining parts from multiple arrangements is a true sign of this. Well thought out and creative.

Not gonna lie I don't resonate too much with it but I can tell you're putting fourth really good vibes. I hope I can appreciate what you make more some day. I can't judge it too harshly because if I watch your other videos or read your descriptions it's clear we are very different people so I can't really offer any constructive criticism anyways anywhoo that's my disclaimer for why I can't relate to the music much but nonetheless this is some good stuff I'm glad you made it.

I, in turn, appreciate it when people can still respect something that doesn't gel with them aesthetically. For a point of reference, I actively dislike listening to the majority of music on the metal spectrum, yet I can still respect the genre and the incredible talent, mathematical precision, planning, passion and intellect that goes into some of the pieces I've heard. Thanks for your comment. ^_^

I'm not sure if you ever remix/re-orchestrate pieces from newer games, too, but from the sampling of your music I've listened to so far, the Hollow Knight soundtrack seems like something you'd enjoy.
Especially Greenpath, Reflection, City of Tears, and The White Palace. My favorite is Mantis Lords. :)

    Well, there we go...
    Terra Branford...
What we could say about this BEAUTIFUL girl?
She's IMHO the apology of the innocence and the growth of any living form reacting around the universe and its environment. I loved so much the development made for her. Even when my favorite characters from this game are Setzer Gabbiani and Kefka Palazzo, surely Terra has a very special place in my heart.
    About Final Fantasy VI...
14 years have passed since the first time I beat this game and I can't do anything but being amazed before the HIGH QUALITY of this gem even when we are before so many great games of the newest generations (Xenoblade, FF VII, FF VIII, Tales of Symphonia, etc.). That is another proof about the graphic power is NOT the most important thing about a game. Games like this were made with love, passion, encouragement, a real understanding about what has been doing around that. The result indeed was one of the most amazing games I've played (even through a long space of time it was my favorite game ever, but I knew Golden Sun games and FF VI was beaten by those ones ^_^ ).
A perfect storyline (even when I think it could be most perfect if Terra & Edgar would get a crush around them - sorry, I ship them ^_^ - ), a musical score BEYOND WORDS AND SPACE, a graphic level IMPRESSIVE for the times it was released (maybe only Tales of Phantasia and Bahamut Lagoon could rival with this game in this aspect), characters with GREAT charisma...
If only the secret dungeon in the GBA version weren't so HARDCORE! :P
I hope someday this epicness level will be reached and maybe also surpassed.

Hey Rebecca, I've been listening to a small few of your pieces over the years. My absolute favorite is your rendition of Still of the Night, it feels like being wrapped in a pool of light
I'm hearing this piece for the first time, and for some reason I feel like the character Terra kind of reminds me of you in some ways (I mean this as a big compliment)
I also feel like some aspects of this piece remind me of another video game that was pivotal to my childhood. Have you played Golden Sun? I'm very biased and I love the series, but if you haven't played it I would definitely recommend checking it out for at least the music!
There's some wonderful pieces in the games such as Elemental Stars, Forest's Requiem, Venus Lighthouse (all in the first game) and several in the second game like Air's Rock or... Well, I'm starting to make a large block of text now haha
I don't know if you still check out these comments, but I just want you to know that your music and the aspects of yourself that you put in it have been a light in my life and kept me feeling positive when I've needed something good in the world to look toward
I doubt we will ever meet, as I am in California and I imagine you to be somewhere quite far, but I just wanted to share my gratitude for you existing and creating these wonderful things

I wish the HD character of Terra had green hair and not blonde, even if it was supposed to be blonde despite green hair in the 2D sprites because that is what has stuck with fan’s memory of Terra, just like with Rydia from FF4.
In a future FF6 remake I hope the hair has some green like blonde with green highlights..
