  • well this is one of the least productive looking steps, although completion of this task is critical to how the rest of the build would turn out. But its done now! on to the wings next week!

    This genius is building an airplane from SCRATCH and majority of these comments are about disliking his choice of music 😆 Awesome job, I like the audience interaction on your channel. Something I need to do more of.

    Hey Peter,
    I noticed you didn't put any threadlock on the bolts, DON'T forget this, this thing is going to vibrate a lot.

      WHAT!!!!@?? Use the threadlock on everything that isn't plastic or polymer

    • @chenry7084
      @chenry7084 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Thread locker is almost never used on aircraft, proper torque and safety wire or cotter pins are far superior, I say this as a certificated aircraft technician. The main issue with thread locker is its internal so its nearly impossible to tell if the lock is broken without actually breaking it yourself, wire and pins are external making them easier to inspect while also providing a stronger lock, but yes the bolts should be secured one way or another.

    I'm not sure if the landing gear is intelligent without some dampers.. I mean the wings are going to take a beating at every bump.

    • @Tonnsfabrication
      @Tonnsfabrication 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Not just take a beating, a bad hit or pot hole could do unseen structural damage to the spar then the next time you load the spar goodbye wing. That's normally at above livable fall heights and results in FAA what not to do videos.

    • @fx4wannabe01
      @fx4wannabe01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In all reality, there's alot of light aircraft that don't have any sort of suspension at all. Some have some spring in their landing gear via bending of the legs but there's plenty without any spring what so ever. Ultralight like he's doing is common to be firm gear...no suspension.

    • @jeffroberts3136
      @jeffroberts3136 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I totally agree. Don't just bank on smooth landings. Atmospheric conditions alone could put you on the ground harder than you're designing for.

    • @modelnutty6503
      @modelnutty6503 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      totally agree, a re-do with some heavy valve springs encapsulated in the tubing maybe? 1.5" worth of travel and impact damping might weigh an extra lb or so. haven't seen if it's a tricycle or tail dragger, if tricycle I wouldn't worry much about the nose wheel, just the under wing mounted.

    • @johnpossum556
      @johnpossum556 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MTB suspension would be perfect size.... downhill racers are designed for exactly this.... Hard downward forces... my FS MTB suspension has both a shock and a spring and still fits in my hand. IT's taken a lot of beating on the Mississippi river rocks!

    @SupernovaSpence 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    You absolutely have to have suspension, at least a little, especially if you screw up your spar, the plane is toast. Even a compressed rubber spring, something so you don't crack the spar. Even a couple little tiny bumps could screw it up on your first landing. And since you've never landed your ultralight before, let alone fly it, you don't know how it's going to flare.

    • @modelnutty6503
      @modelnutty6503 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      agree, couple big block valve springs encapsulated in the tubing could be good way to go too.

    • @Goldeagle365
      @Goldeagle365 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      or go the route that many light aircraft, and even gen 1 and two cirrus use on the nose, Rubber pucks!

    • @jackfrost2146
      @jackfrost2146 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think a trailing link suspension would be best. The way it is, I wouldn't trust it for one landing. Even if it doesn't suffer visible damage, I worry about what would be happening to the spar---unseen.

    • @johnpossum556
      @johnpossum556 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      car shocks are too heavy. The first planes had give in the wood and the wire cable used to hold them. I think you're worrying about something that should be a non issue.

    • @gjhinshaw
      @gjhinshaw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HUH????
      Most ultralights DON’T have any suspension!
      I have had 5 ultralights and none had any suspension! They were all sold in great shape to other pilots.

    As a self-certified/educated Kerbal Space Program engineer, I'm highly concerned for several of your predicted flight characteristics of your aircraft. Please take my words of caution seriously, as I'm truly concerned....
    The two things that NEED to be addressed........
    The top speed and the acceleration...to solve these major problems, I highly suggest adding a couple of rockets on the sides for rocket assisted take-off.. As well as a single RC sized turbine for pushing the speed envelope (nothing too crazy of course)..
    Hope my engineering expertise helps!!!! Happy flying!

      I feel like he's missing struts. Definitely add struts. The quality and safety of an aircraft increases exponentially with the number of struts.

    theres a guy on youtube who has built his own super quad copter in sweden i think..
    hes spent at last 20 hours on flight testing in a dozen videos.. everything from static flight to finally 20 feet hi and hovering..
    hes gotten pretty good at his machine.. the point is take your time.. do a one minute flight.take off a few feet and land.. and continue building over 20 tries or more.. once yore up and away from the ground you can start maneuvering.. take your time and youll live.. doc johnny former nasa test pilot,, flight surgeon nato..
    now i didnt say you wouldnt crash.. but youll live on a bad glide at worst

P.S very simple plane, might be a little heavier though.

    I have a good feeling that you will fly so high and then go crash into a tree and survive and you will be honored as a Vietnam war hero. Than you will be awarded the Medal of Honor and then for some reason end up creating a club, the club will be called THE MILK CLUB I know what you're thinking Willy Wonkas chocolate crunch bars with extra crunch no we are talking about taffy being extra chewy and soft which will cause every single human alive to jump at once and cause a massive earthquake which will cause a large tsunami and that tsunami will wipe everything out except for Kylie Jenner which will die from not getting enough lip injections.
