    I love how he says he's building an airplane then gets right into a montage, Peter... you know an airplane is a big step up from your normal RC stuff... then a hear he had a mk 1 which had no plans at all!

    Looks much better overall. Monoplane much better than biplane.
    Would look to seeing the following features:
    1. a good high lift airfoil, with drag as a secondary consideration. optimized for loiter/flight times.
    2 a higher aspect ratio wing. If you have an efficient airfoil, a higher aspect ratio makes everything better, except for adverse yaw, and that's a solvable problem. Think early sailplane.. Do not need a large chord to affect the air if the airfoil is optimized for sink rate. The CL is achieved in a relatively short chord, and for the same drag, you can effect loft on a much larger volume of air. Same principle as the large prop diameter. you would not want short, stubby prop blades, would you? The twin lends itself to that nicely.
    3 the motors as close to center as possible, without interfering with each other, so that if you lose one, the offset thrust will be minimal.
    4 a T tail would have been better, but the tail you have will work fine, and will allow for better controllability at very low speeds, provided you learn to give the throttle a blast, and still have the battery power to do so.
    5. make a "Tesla" style battery from 3500mah NCR18650GA cells. Much better gravimetric energy density, about 187% better than lipos. Not sure how to get sponsorship for them, but would drastically extend flight times.
    6 high amounts of ripple current meant that the batteries should be kept very close to the speed controllers. And the speed controllers should be kept relatively close to the motors. If you have to extend any wires, extend the wires from the SC to the motor. this is a major safety issue, and one very often overlooked.
    7. find a way to brace the leading edge of the stabilizers, so that they do not get into an oscillation. happens way easier on larger scale.
    8 I personally would have made the pilot's position lying back reclined much more for aero, but that's a personal choice, and can't tell you that what you're doing is wrong. again think glider...
    anyway, just my two cents. you have more experience by now anyway..
    best of luck, and don't listen to anyone being critical without helpful criticism.
    cheers!

    • @BitesCGI
      @BitesCGI 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Curious, why do you think a T-tail would be better? Having the accelerated slipstream moving over the tail will make the control surface more effective than if you had a T-tail.
      Also, there's definitely a fine line with a high lift airfoil. You'll eventually get to a point where you have so much lift that the induced drag is too great. You end up with a stupid slow plane haha.
      Great insight though!

    • @BitesCGI
      @BitesCGI 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But the propwash drops, so you'd get more force from the propwash if the horizontal stabilizer is where the propwash is actually going to be (below and behind), not directly behind it.

      @eelcohoogendoorn8044 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Higher aspects may make all aerodynamical properties better; but all mechanical considerations all that much worse. Thats the very good reason peter went with a biplane last time. And this build also seems more geared towards 'DIY budget' than 'carbon-fibre-all-the-things'.

    Cool plane and all! Totally supportive!
    However, have you considered torsion and bending moment on the tail? In other words, what if the front roll to the right while the tail roll to the left? Might lead to fatigue problems. Also, vibrations, bending moments and instabilities along the Yaw axis since the areal moment counteracting this is pretty small.
    Have you done some kind of simulation (FEA/FEM) to confirm that the structure can take the load?
    Aluminum 6000-series is cool and all... but have you heard of 7075? ;)

      [Karri] Is it? Didn't they mostly use body box sections to support the tail?

    • @Flyingwigs
      @Flyingwigs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      electric motors produce very very little vibration, unlike gas engines so only aerodynamic vibrations will be a factor (small) but yes, if the tail section isn't stiff enough, it could twist. though it looks really stout from here :)

    You will have torsional and lateral issues with the 2" Square section frame you need depth and a bit of triangulation for stiffness. The area around the cockpit will probably ( almost certainly) have torsional issues. It may work out fine for a very gentle flight. The frame is certainly overdone in one dimension. I really like your design but some rudimentary FEA would be a good idea.

    I’m concerned about lateral and torsional rigidity. Your entire fuselage is only strong in the up-down direction. It will sway side to side like a noodle. If you end up rolling at all when you turn, I think you’ll find that the whole fuselage bends in a way that is not good.

      I think this design may be prone to flutter... Triangles are your friend. For a proof of concept, it would have been easy to find a fuselage from an ultralight that was proven a successful design already... maybe make the wings if one has to have some "I built it" kind of input, but a BeLite fuselage or something similar would likely be way safer.

    You can download the goat plans for free.
    Your design looks almost similar to the goat, I saw one video where a guy mounted a large RC engine behind the pilot and use that for power to fly.
    I believe using a large RC engine will save a lot of weight compared to the batteries you will need and I believe you get longer flight time too.

    The aft fuselage needs more bracing to sustain the rudder side loads. It looks inadequate in both bending and torsion for large rudder load. Look at pictures of primary gliders to get some ideas of how this is done.

    • @tyranl.131
      @tyranl.131 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      GaetanLePelican
      Significantly more complicated, expensive, and dangerous. You can't even buy rocket fuel without having it specifically manufactured for your rocket. Not to mention, launch facilities, guidance systems, and just the math for making an efficient nozzle. It's very complicated, and a huge step up from an ultralight. Even a small scale hovering vehicle is a large undertaking.

    • @TheTrueGlaukos
      @TheTrueGlaukos 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      don't think you're serious about doing that, but on the off chance you are, dont. unless you have a way to recharge the batteries and the aircraft is bouyant enough to float while they recharge. either way it will definitely be arduous with any kind of electric craft (oh and in that case don't fly when close to land or you'll probably be shot down, because that's how things are)
