    Thanks, stupendous accuracy at addressing an outrageous problem that surfaced in our 2-year old Whirlpool washer WTW4750YQ1. Plastic in the gearbox is a shameless practice. I would love to drop the washer on Whirlpool's head.
    This is the kind of thing the consumer doesn't know until it's too late. So much for Whirlpool "quality"...

      You are welcome! Wow...only 2-years old with this problem? Just an FYI, the machine I repaired using this "fix" is still working properly a year later. I do not care for the newer machines; I'll keep my 22-year old Whirlpool washer for as long as I can. Good luck!

    Perfect! Thanks so much. I had it fixed in a few hours and didn't have to buy and wait for parts. My wife gets frantic when she can't do the wash--she had already picked out a new washer by the time I came home from work. Your video saved me hundreds of dollars on a new washer and about $25 for a new part (not including shipping). Only problem is my wife saw how filthy the washer looked when it was apart........

      Robert Elliott Great! The one I repaired for a friend is still going strong! No need to replace when an inexpensive fix can be done. Thanks for the nice comment!! JT

    I am grateful for this video. My problem did not end here but this got me in the right area. After this didn't solve my problem, I took the agitator gear off of the shaft and found a lot of wear on the shaft splines where the gear engages, and on the shaft where the gear moves up and down to release (actual steps cut into the shaft i could feel with my finger nail). I believe this poor spline engagement is where some of my ratcheting noise was coming from. I moved the bottom thrust washer from inside the retaining ring to below it by the housing where the shaft goes into the hole to get more spline engagement (.039 inch) for a temporary fix and come to a conclusion about the problem. It worked. The washing machine just finished the second load with no trouble. I assume the retaining ring has a good chance of chewing up the thrust washer, hopefully it will last until the new transmission arrives. My assessment is I need a 4th new transmission with all these factors and the price of the individual parts. By the way my agitator was only spinning clockwise and wrapping clothes around it along with the ratcheting noise before my efforts came to fruition. Our Kenmore is a 2008. It appears that these machines are designed to NOT get anywhere close to 20 years of service anymore. The first transmission was replaced under warranty and the service man told me most appliances available at that time, even ovens, will last about 7 -8 years. I see Speed Queen currently says their washers are designed to last 25 years and they have a 15 year transmission warranty. The trouble is they are $750 to $800 in my area.

    I love this video. I have a washer that makes this noise during the spin cycle. It appears that your demonstration of the noise is during spin as I note you needed to press the lid switch in order to run the washer. I see others have commented that their washer makes the noise during agitate. It seems the cam is supposed to lift the agitate gear and disengage it from the spline on the shaft. When the lobes of the cam wear, the agitate gear is not lifted quite high enough to fully disengage, thus the noise. I am excited to get into my gearbox and check this out! Again, bravo for such a great video!! Thanks!!

      +PAballoonists Your analysis on the wearing parts is correct. You can purchase a new cam of simply use a thicker washer to compensate for the wear. Good luck! Let me know how the "fix" turns out. Regards.

    Thanks so much for this video. The description "ratchet"(of the sound) is pretty close to what my washing machine does while agitating. I replaced the agitator dogs on the top of the agitator, they were completely gone! lol! But that didnt end the ratchet grinding sound. My question is, how involved is it to remove the shaft from the transmission?

    JT, I aslo looked at google / youtube to find answers to our agitation issues. Our washer is very loud and can be heard anywhere in the house. 1st, replaced dogs that were nearly dust from being work out completely. some were in multiple pieces. I was excited to see this and an inexpensive fix, $8. To my dismay, this did not remedy anything, Studying more, it appeared that the transmission was bad by video content, we kitted the transmission, w new gear, fly weights, agitator pieces and tested using the drill cw & ccw. since all worked as supposed to, reassembled with not improvement. Told by appliance shop that the motor to transmission connectors were bad, and shop had over a 1000 in stock, verified this was the issue. I thought ours were find but for $10 I thought ok. no avail, then since the towels are wrapped to tight around the agitator that it takes 5 minutes to remove them, someone shared that the clutch was not working well. OK, $27 later, it definitely spins better and faster, but still the problem persists. I watched your video, and am very grateful for it. After looking at new washers, I am convinced that Whirlpool does not make them to last anylonger and they are the BIG manufacturer of washers now. Maytag, Kitchenaid, many others. Not wanting to buy new, we decided to fix this one. As an engineer and mechanic, I am impressed with the manufacturing of the washer and ease for working on it, but have not overcome the agitation issue. I plan to follow your video to a T, and try this. I have poured our all other possibilities, but it has to be remaining in the transmission. I was told not to replace the large gear without replacing the sun gear, but neither were worn. Thanks, any further insight would be appreciated. I will update this with the results after incorporating your fix. Thank you, Paul

      +Paul W Hopefully, my fix will cure the problem. The plastic parts wear and do not separate the gears enough, which causes the ratchet noise. I was told the manufacturers intent is for a washing machine to last no more than 5 years. My washing machine is...hmmm...28 years old! By the way, my friends washing machine I removed the "ratchet sound" from is still going strong. Good luck! Let me know how you make out with your machine! Regards.

    Great video. But the video posted in the description shows the incorrect way of assembling the agitation shaft (plastic pieces are backward.) Your video has the correct orientation.

    I have the same problem and same noise, and it only occurs in agitation mode. When I opened the transmission I found everything normal. In my case seems to be that this worn out pinion or agitator shaft.

    • @Kntryhart
      @Kntryhart  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Carlos Pareja Yes, it is when the machine agitates. I think if you follow my instructions, the issue will be resolved. Let me know...regards.

      I am sorry the delay. Sir i followed your instruction, but i am not sure if the lock washer is the propper. I changed the lock washer without good results. The washer machine as usual make the same noise. Another thing I've noticed during the agitation mode does not move the agitation shaft but i have the noise.
      Any idea?.

    • @Kntryhart
      @Kntryhart  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carlos Pareja Sorry, I don't. And you say it made the same ratchet noise as in my video?

    • @carlospareja2579
      @carlospareja2579 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok I got it. The problem with my washer machine is the pinion shaft, inside the theeth are wear, so is probably i need to replace the shaft totaly.

    • @Kntryhart
      @Kntryhart  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the machine was use a long time with the noise, I could see how the mating portions would were enough where replacement was required. You might check ebay to see if you can get a used or rebuilt transmission. Good luck! Let me know how you make out! Regards!

    Thanks a lot, Kntryhart. A sizable expenditure avoided. Did the plastic cam kit fail in sync with expiration of the warranty ?
    The use of plastic for the cam kit is clearly a revenue generator for somebody else besides the owner.

    Hey! How about this one: Loud clunking/knocking sound in the agitation cycle and clothes get wrapped around and under the agitator -- ripped up some sheets my wife was fond of...... If I run the machine on delicate the agitator does not move as much--no knocking and the clothes don't get caught.

      You did not mention the make or model, but I searched on "Dr. Google"...here's a couple links:

      I think the 1st link describes my prob--something in the trans is engaging part of he spin during agitation. That prob explains the knock. Prob wont get to find out tho--the wife's pining for a new machine. Happy wife, happy life.....Thanks!

      Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the retainer clip (number 8 on diagram) is no longer available. Should I go to a machine shop? Is it a common size clip?

      You can try Lowes, Homedepot, local hardware stores. Here's a link to ebay:
      www.ebay.com/itm/New-300pc-E-Clip-Eclip-Assortment-Set-Kit-Retaining-Ring-External-Fasteners-Case/282217648030?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D40146%26meid%3Dc8c39f7e65b04a029d02fa9217561e6d%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D251927905127
      It should not be too difficult.

    • @Kntryhart
      @Kntryhart  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What happened to the old clip? You can carefully "squeeze" it back into shape. Not a perfect solution, but I have done it many times.

    • @slimyelow
      @slimyelow 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is missing. It doesn't look like the case had ever been opened, so I'm guessing it was a manufacturing error. The machine has been working for 2.5 years, until recently when the ratcheting noise started. The cams seem like new, but I ordered a set from partselect. I emptied the case from oil and searched but the clip didn't fall off. The washer between the cam and the gear on the shaft is also missing and that could definitely not come off accidentally.
      There is another C - Clip with the same part number further up the shaft that holds the spring in place. But again partselect tells me they don't carry it anymore. - but they have everything else!
