  • Are you considering getting a parrot but you go to school? There are many factors that you need to consider before bringing one home. Birds are not for everyone, and there’s so much research that needs to be done before deciding. Only you can know if a bird is fit for your lifestyle.

My 13 year old son wanted a green cheek, which was okay with me. Now he’s 32, and is long gone. Fortunately, I love my 19 year sweet birdie girl, pay tons of money for her upkeep, she has a cockatoo sized cage, gets attention, etc... Things don’t always turn out that way. Great video!!

Please don’t buy a bird without researching thoroughly! I know it might be tempting to get a bird because they’re adorable and “easy” but they need lots of care, time, energy, toys, big cage, etc to live a long, happy life. Do you have the space? Can you handle mess? Do you know proper diet and emergency procedures? It’s a huge commitment, so please take care of your bird if you decide to get one💕

I am 12 years old and, I took initiative by saving up, it used to be a little bit of money but I got $476 in total, I researched all the time and impressed my parents, I even convinced them to let me get one! I got 2 cocktails that live happily in a beautiful flight cage with a good diet! My bird honey was really scared of us, my sister basically gave up on her, but i didn’t, I loved her and will never give up! Honey is now in my hair, probably making it harder to brush, but it doesn’t matter because I love her. A lot of guests usually come over so they socialize enough with people. Now my parents and sister are bird lovers and even go spend their own money on toys and millets! So I feel like as long as you are committed and and ready for everything, so I don’t think that it works for everything, but, as you get older, you just might just get more qualified for owning a bird. Thank you for your time. Edit: I forgot to mention I got a second flight cage for Sushi, a grey cocktail, he likes cuddles and somehow started stepping on my finger within the first few days we got him! I wouldn’t give my birds for anything, I might even value them over my own life.

Make sure you realistic with vet bills. One of my birds vet bills was £2,500 or USD 3,100. My parrot also has a long term condition which is £300 every 3 months for tests plus £60 for medication and this could be case for years!
Depending what country you are in look up insurance. Mine are insured though Exotic Direct which helps with some of the costs.

    • @marljusweety
      @marljusweety 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

You should check if there is pet insurance available where you live. Here in Norway you can pay for pet insurance, a small fee yearly, and if your pet needs veterinary treatment you only pay a minimum fee. The rest is covered by the insurance company. (You have to pay first and send the receipt to the insurance company and they refund you everything over the minimum fee.)

Another way to help convince your parents a bit more is to maybe volunteer to spend time with the birds at a bird sanctuary so you know what you want. If you really wanna get into it try fostering, see if a bird is right for you or which bird is right for you because if it’s not remember, it’s still a foster and will get adopted. Also, if you do find that one bird through fostering, and your parents have been okey with it the whole time the bird has been living with you, wow it’s yet another foster fail🤍 love ur vids! ☺️🦜🦜

It was love at first sight! She's always with us, and since i work from home, she's my co-worker too. My office is starting to look like a bird room, a cockatiel habitat she loves to explore and fly around. This bird will have the best life we can offer, so i'm glad we took her and not someone who could neglect her. Your videos are helping us immensely, thank you so much for posting them! Me my mom and twin love birds. My mom grew up with up to nine birds in her house at a time. How ever my dad never had a bird and really did not want one. We currently have a 14 year old dog with arthritis and he is sweet and gentle so we knew he would not be a problem (he lets the birds land on him and drink out his his bowl, etc.) But we did not care about what dad said and we got two budgies we are currently still getting everything they need but my dad already loves them and helps take care of them and is willing to pay for everything that they need including bills from healthcare for them.

Your advice is always spot on, and most especially you keep the bird's welfare in mind. Too often the outcome is not good and that should is avoidable. So, from a former bird owner who takes vicarious pleasure in watching you enjoy your birds, thank you for your wisdom.

It broke my heart but I had to because it just wouldn't be right to get a bird and then just neglect it.

i’m 13 years old and i’m planning on getting a green cheek. i’ve researched them for a LONGGGG time now, and all i had to do to “convince” my parents was make a presentation of everything i knew about green cheeks, and pretty much everything about them. and usually, it takes my dad FOREVER to convince him to get any animal, even something as simple as say a fish. it took him 3 months to even consider letting me get my 2 gerbils, who now live in a 55 gallon tank and are thriving. and right after i showed him and my family the presentation, he came back upstairs to my room and asked to see the cage and the bird i wanted. i showed him the cage, and it’s a proper sized cage, and he asked me to send him the link for it, so i did. the next morning, he came into my room and said that him and my mom spoke about getting a bird, and they both were fine with it. and the bird i initially wanted was on craigslist and was literally walking distance from our house, but my dad said he would NEVER get a living animal off of craigslist. so we instead found an AMAZING bird rescue that’s about 30ish minutes from our house. and at this point, i had already bought the food, perches, toys, and everything else except for the cage, because my parents said i’m getting a bird but we’re not exactly sure when. so the rescue place i was talking about has classes that you must attend if you’re wanting to adopt a bird, which i think is amazing so people can be properly educated on how to take care of birds. and all of the classes were already booked for a couple of weeks, but they also offer self paced online classes. and so me and my dad took those classes on top of all of my research that i’ve done prior to all of this. and we finished that class yesterday, and are planning on applying to adopt one of their green cheeks this weekend! they said that it will take a minimum of a month after you submit the application for you to actually be able to meet and adopt the bird and all that. so after we submit the application, my dad said i’ll be able to order the cage and i’m so excited!!

I've been researching on birds for a long time without actually getting one for almost 3 years now, and even with that, I got an untame bird and still feel like I'm not ready despite knowing what I'm doing and what I'm getting into. I'm definitely making progress, though I could still use any tips, and the point I'm trying to make is no matter how much research you do having a bird for the first time is very different. You may not realise how hard birds actually are until you get one yourself.

I got my first bird when I was 14 (oh gosh, 16 years ago lol), and to convince my parents to let me get a bird (my first bird was a budgie) I wrote a several page report all about budgies and how to take care of them. I'm really thankful my parents let me save up my allowance and get a budgie, because ever since, I'm totally obsessed with parrots. I was homeschooled for a while when I was a teenager, so I was home a lot. But even after I went back to high school, I've always been an introvert and preferred to stay home instead of doing after school activities. So whenever I was home I was in my room hanging out with my birds (I got more birds to keep each other company while I was at school, and well, because I wanted more!) They had several play gyms in my room to play on, that my dad even built for them! Your parents def need to be willing to spend money if your bird needs to go to the vet. A vet visit can cost $300-$800 or more if they get sick or hurt! I see on FB groups all the time "my bird is sick/hurt but ,my parents won't take us to the vet" and that is just so sad! Your parents also need to be willing to pay for food, including fresh fruits and veggies. A kid or teen's allowance can only go so far, so even if you tell your parents you'll pay for everything, undoubtedly they will need to pitch in one way or another.
Great video, you make a lot of good and important points for young people, or anyone really, to consider before they get their first bird! ❤️

We also have two cats but they weren't even really interested in my hamster and rat back then and my mom knows how to communicate with them and tell them what they can do and what not so I'm really excited and thankful that I'm learning a lot from you so thanks 💕(Btw I'm 15 and soon 16 now)

"The only question is what am I gonna do wenn I and my family going on a vacation...?" The best thing to do is find a pet sitter. One who will follow the diet you have for the birds, and take proper care of them. Finding one with parrot experience is best. Some hotels are pet friendly, so don't be afraid to ask. Honestly if a shrieking 3 year old isn't annoying everyone in the hotel, then why should your parrot be? At least the parrot is asleep for 11-13 hours a day lol.
If that doesn't work, close family members, who again have either parrot experience, or will follow your routine is best. Even better if its someone who has been in contact with the bird several times already on visits. If that isn't possible then a close friend can work in a pinch as well.
Always have your plans set in motions months before you do go on vacation, and it never hurts to have back up plans as well.

I am 14 and just bought two adorable budgies named Mango and Blueberry a week and a half ago! My mom didn't get me a pet before because of the responsibility and the fact that we went on vacation each year to visit my grandpa who lives in another country. We don't have any other family here, so no one would be able to care for the bird without my mom feeling guilty about burdening friends. Sadly, my grandpa dies in March and we were unable to go to the funeral because of Covid, but we no longer have to visit him each summer. So, my mom decided to buy the budgies! She never was against having birds -- she loves animals -- and it only took half a day to convince her after all the research I did. Now, a week and a half later, I have been able to get Mango (not Blueberry just yet) to perch on my hand while eating millet! I love them very much and my mom cares for them when I can't 😄😄

Love this video! Great topic👍 It’s so devastating that some people think of birds as objects or decorations :( Your parents sound awesome! My parents help with my birds too😊 before coronavirus, my mum would let my birds out while I was at school and spend time with them😁 she doesn’t like things being destroyed and chewed up🤣 but she loves my birds and doesn’t get mad when they poop on stuff and pull keys out of her computer😬 she also helps me trim their nails (she has experience of course). Honestly what would we do without parents😆 once again, great video! Thanks for sharing💗🐣

im 11 and ive done a ton of research on budgies because my mom is getting me 3. im responsible for their care. I already have a lixit water cleaner for their water, tons of toys, and a big cage. i found your channel and its really helpful, and i thought it would be a good idea to do some extra research. i have everything planned out.

    Amazing video❤️
I totally agree with all of this,
Rebel doesn't like me or people in general due to being abused at the home he was in before mine and he attacks me all the time
(He is still let out of the cage for along time everyday, I just deal with the biting)
I feel like not enough kids/teens think about what they are going to do with the bird once they go away to college or get a job.
Unfortunately there is no vet in my area that will look at a bird (I live in the country)

I'm 11 and me and my sis have two buddies. We didn't know a lot about them when we got them but now we started doing research and they are pretty healthy now! I'm going to be getting them a new cage now and new toys too. I'm super happy that I know what to do now, and my buddies have a good life.

Elena G I would personally say get the same bird, I think you meant you had a cockatiel so I would get another cockatiel rather than another type of bird.

I have 2 budgies and a cockatiel. The 2 budgies are a bonded pair, in their own cage, the cockatiel in theirs. Nice thing is, in the wild budgies and cockatiels are seen in the same flocks all the time! It is more important on how you introduce them to each other as well.
Even 2 parrots of the same species can get aggressive to each other over very minor things. Having something like a neutral play set is a good idea. There is also a chance the birds just wont get a long and will have to be housed in separate rooms to prevent them from attacking each other.
