I (as a hamster owner) used to think pet stores just don't properly care for animals such as hamsters. As I explore the care of other animals, I found out that pet stores don't really have knowledge of the care of other animals either.
Well-informed pet store employees are an endangered species, always have been. I’m glad you care, Vanessa, but it’s better to get veterinary or expert advice about your bird’s needs.
@@sandrastreifel6452 I am not going to disagree with that, but if I do not tell customers everything they need to know and simply tell them to get the advice of a vet, chances are they will not and then know absolutely nothing.

el, i had a happy hut and a chewed up rope but when i saw the video i instantly took it out. A month later by two birds were happy. I feel like i owe you my life
Something else about the vitamin water drops, that I saw someone mention in a budgie Facebook group, was that if the bird doesn't like the taste, they can learn to avoid the water dish and become seriously dehydrated! In such a small bird that can be dangerous!
Thank you for letting me know about the happy hut issue! I didn't know how dangerous they could be, and thankfully I've only had my little lovebird for two nights, so I could quickly prevent bad things from happening to him! I took it out of his cage right away. Thank you so much! ❤
Ikr why is it even called happy hut when birds are not even HAPPY IN THERE some people are soo insensitive 😒 like my one friend who bought a bird just bc I did and her bird died of loneliness she didn't even care about it I was soo disgusted 😔
you dont have to show him the video, you can just expain, my dad still uses febreeze, and i told hiim when or if i get a bird he can stop using it, and he agreed.
I’m getting ready to take the mirror out of my parakeets cage. I have 3 parakeets and I now know why one is so aggressive. She’s the one who loves the mirror.
I'm so happy for the existence of the bird community! I am looking to get birds again for the first time since I was a teen and I was looking at a happy hut. There was one I saw on Amazon though that had a review talking about how their bird had chewed a hole in the fabric and had somehow gotten caught INSIDE THE HUT between the layers of fabric. I thought maybe it wasn't a common occurrence but wanted to make sure and googled it. I found out that getting caught literally inside the things doesn't seem to be common, but after running into MANY videos like your own I understand the long list of reasons why these things aren't good for your bird. Thank you for this.
some names for so-called "happy huts"happy huts I've encountered: Hurt huts, unhappy huts, death dens, horrible hideouts, danger dens, disaster dens, horrifying houses, horrifying huts, and so many more. The moral of this DONT BUY HAPPY HUTS THEY ARE BAD FOR BIRDS.
I have a bird and my brother has a bird and when Elle said "NO COTTON ROPE TOYS!!" and I saw my bro had a cotton rope toy for his budgie, I took it out without asking. I think it is safe to say he prefers an alive bird to a bird toy.
Ok but remember to also explain to your brother why it’s harmful instead of just removing it, otherwise he’s probably going to get another one to replace it
I’m not even gonna lie…I’ve done so many of these things & omg I’m so ashamed of myself. Luckily it was years ago & didn’t last long. I changed a lot of things so it doesn’t cause harm to my birds & they are all going strong, the oldest being 5 years old! And I’ve still got many more years to go with them☺️
We all make mistakes. We are human. One of my budgies got out unexpectedly while my dogs were in the house. We had just had them a few days. I was able to get him on my finger but before I got him back in the cage he flew off to our downstairs bathroom into the toilet. Unfortunately my reaction was to just grab him and lift him out of the toilet and put him back in the cage. It put our taming back. I've just been able to get him to come to the millet after two weeks since then.
Being a good pet owner isn’t about the mistakes you have made, it’s about how we react to somebody correcting our mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes. There is misinformation everywhere, hey I’m sure even Elle made a mistake or two when she first started out. Even some of the best pet owners have made a mistake. Don’t feel bad about it everybody has made a mistake and nobody is absolutely perfect.
Im a new bird owner, my son bought a bird and he left her in the cage all day by itself while he was at work, then when home, he ignored her. I told him to let me have her and I would take better care of her. So I am now a new momma of a budgie. I am so glad I saw this video because I had almost every one of these things, and I paused this video to remove these items from the cage. I cant believe these things are even marketed to bird owners if they cause such harm. I also just bought my budgie another budgie friend because she was so lonely. My bird is obsessed with the mirror so I knew she needed another bird asap. I would have never gotten any pet without learning all I could before hand to be able to properly acre for them however, this was an emergency type situation I hadnt counted on happening. I still have plastic food dishes and dowel perches, but Im looking as we speak for better healthier options. Im subscribing for sure, I have so much to learn. Thank you
@@spyfalls_ but they're obviously not in the wild as pets, therefore they don't have the same things they would have in their natural habitat. That "NOPE" at 11:47 is just too precious... Thanks for that! And for the rest: it's RIGHT ON! The marketers are the predators and we are the prey... The problem is that what is being said now is the same as what what said when I first started out with birds over 15 years ago, and nothing has changed... The marketers seem to be winning the battle...
We adopted a budgie a few years ago who was so neglected that he was overly protective over his reflection and even his shadow. He would neglect eating and drinking to spend time with his shadow (we don't have mirrors at our aviary), and when he had to be forcibly separated from his shadow to eat or take medication, he would become aggressive and bite people and other birds. It took years for him to recover and for us to teach him to interact with other birds and become a fully integrated part of our aviary.
Thank you for all the information. My daughter wants me to adopt a macaw. I’m seriously considering it because she has done many years of research and this is her passion. I’ve also done research from TH-cam videos like yours. Again, thank you 😊. Love, love, love your necklace.
0:40 that exact one on the bottom left is where my budgie is, i'm switching to a bigger cage we have. my birb seems okay, but to be safe i'll switch to the bigger one. thanks for the information!
PlantetPleasures website is amazing, if you are looking for parrot safe natural toys. You don't have to worry about what is or isn't safe, cause it is all safe! Mine love them all! Glad El mentioned them in one of her older videos.
Sisal rope, jute rope, hemp rope, seagrass rope, and anything else that is a natural fiber (except cotton of course) is safe for birds! Even paper cord is safe! All you need to worry about if you have natural fiber rope is if the rope is treated in any way (sometimes it’s treated with petroleum and other chemicals) or if there were any glues used in making it. And if the rope is colorful, you have to make sure it only uses food grade dyes.
There is evidence of birds dying from natural fibre compaction as well so you still need to replace them when they are really frayed or you witness the bird ingesting it, just to a lesser extent.
I'm a pet store employee, when she says " don't listen to pet store employees" she means those at PetSmart and petco, private businesses are very knowledgeable and will absolutely give you correct information. We aren't trying to make money. We own a lot of pets and we know what works!!

thank you elle! I recently got my first conure and the previous owner was admit about him sleeping in his happy hut. I have two cockatiels and they sleep on their natural perches. My conure had some aggressive tendencies as of lately, I will be removing the hut today!
Hi! My family and I have had a male cockatiel named Clive for the past 12 years he has only ever been feed a seed mix, hasn't really ever been weighed or gone to a vet, and hasn't been clipped in years. My older sister got him when we were younger but we quickly got over him and my mom has been taking care of him ever since. He is very unsocial and is only really bonded with my parents but has rarely been taken out of the cage the past few years. During this past year, I have become very invested in his well-being because I have had so much extra time. I was completely unaware of how to properly take care of a cockatiel and now I am trying to improve his life. A few weeks ago while I had his cage outside, he got scared and flew out while I was putting something in the cage. It was windy that weekend and he doesn't know how to fly so he was too high up and didn't know how to come down. He was outside for three long days, we found him and lost him over 15 times, but he was finally found by a neighbor who knew he was lost and was brought back home! We took him to our local avian vet and discovered he is critically underweight at 66 grams. When we took him back a week later he had only gained 1 gram but we don't know what he weighed before he had gotten out (he is a smaller cockatiel). The vet also clipped his wings right away because of his situation but I am unsure if I should continue clipping them or eventually try to flight train him. I am also in the process of changing his diet to pellets instead of seed, introducing him to fresh foods and I am eventually going to get him a new cage. I am very worried that because of his age he wont accept any of these new ways of life or it will somehow affect him in a negative way. Let me know if you have any advice on how to get him to gain some weight and eventually convert him to a new diet.
What a story! Firstly, his weight. Some cockatiels are naturally smaller or larger, as you mentioned. I would specifically try feeding Harrison's High Potency pellets to gain some weight back, as well as sweet potatoes, quinoa, hemp hearts, eggs, cooked brown or whole wheat rice, and sprouts. As his weight evens out, feed less of these specific foods and switch him to Harrison's Adult Lifetime Fine. Keep in mind, this is just a suggestion. How should you go about diet conversion? A few ideas: - Eat (or pretend to eat) the food in front of them. Birds are pretty social eaters and will essentially go ~hey! this person I trust is eating something! I should go and eat it too, it must be safe~. This may work especially well if your parents try, as he's more bonded with them. - Positive reinforcement. While you wont want to give him treats in this situation - as they may distract him -, definitely praise him for eating or doing something you want. - Birdie bread! This works especially well for pellet conversions, as pellets are a main ingredient in many blends. Essentially, you're making a bird-safe cookie. - Options. Every bird will have a favorite food or way of preparation. Maybe Clive will find some of his own given enough options. - Specific conversion foods. Sweet corn, sprouts, peas, and sweet potato are usually used in diet conversion to get birds onto veggies. They tend to be well-enjoyed by many different types of birds. As for flight training, I would definitely try some recall and clicker training once he becomes a little more comfortable with you. Simple walking/fluttering/jumping recalls should be fine for now before his wings grow back. Finally, change. Every bird takes these changes differently. Diet changing in particular can even take as long as 6-7 months for more picky eaters, but you'll get there with lots of patience! Do your best to go at his pace. Hope all goes well :)
@@lizziehn5928 Thanks so much for your reply! I forgot to mention that the only seed he actually eats in his mix is the white millet, this is the only thing I've ever seen him eat out of his dish. He also very much enjoys spray millet which I would like to eventually use for training but I am still trying to get him to gain weight so I've been offering it a lot more often since it is one of the only things he will eat a lot of. But because millet is the main part of his diet right now, I am not sure what treats to offer when it comes to training him. The only vegetable he really likes so far is carrot and once took a few bites of romaine lettuce. I also have tried offering apples, bananas, cucumbers, and other greens but I definitely need to try corn, peas, and sweet potato. He doesn't seem to like fruit or sweet things, I think likes the crunchiness of the carrot. I bought the Zupreem natural pellets and have been offering those for about a month but he really isn't responding, my vet recommended I try Roudybush and if those do not work I will try Harrison's high potency. I have also read a lot about bird bread and I'm really excited to try it and I hope he likes it! I want to eventually make his seed mix at home and add in things like quinoa, hemp, and chia seeds. Since his return home, he has already been so much more social and trusting than he ever was before. He is much more willing to come out of his cage and enjoys spending time in other places in the house. My main concern is that he doesn't know how to get around on his own and he depends on me for everything. For example, he will be hanging out in my room and I have his food and water available for him to get to if he wants it but he rarely will go get it on his own. Most of the time he stays in one spot for so long that I end up offering him food and water because I get worried and he takes that fine. The same thing in his cage, he stays up at his top perch unless he needs food or water and he doesn't know how to play with toys really. I want him to be able to decide where he wants to go when, I know this will take time but is there anything more I can do to let him know he is free to roam. Also, I know his confidence will come as his wings grow back (which is what I want) but my whole family and my avian vet think that he should be clipped for his safety. I am doing my best to try to convince them why this should not happen but because of his recent escape, they think this is the best thing to do.
Sadly I have bought some of these things but thanks to you and many other bird you tubers and influencers have helped with these. Thankfully before I got my bird the pet store I got her from “Parrot Stars” helped me find the correct bird cage and I got mine through them. I used to have a happy hut but it made my bird very hormonal along with her mirror so I had to get rid of the both. At pets mart they told me the sanded perch would help her nails and as a younger kid I believed her. I got it and when I was putting it in the cage and cute my hand on it, if it cut me I knew it wasn’t that safe for her so I also didn’t use that. I’ll let you know when I post a cage tour and maybe you can give some feedback or watch my video! I had to learn over time but I’m so great full for people who inform others like you Elle! I started my channel partially for the same reason! To inform others. I’m gonna ask for your kit as a gift and maybe I’ll get it!!
Thank you for this vid. I had no idea some of the things I had in my cockatiels cage was actually harmful. Going to make sure he is better taken care of. Again thank you!
I have two cockatiels and one of them once had some digestive issues. I took her to the avian vet and she got an x-ray and the vet said it was because her mechanical stomach had no particles in it to help her digest the food. Yes she did get a bunch of other tests and she was fine otherwise. He recommended I occasionally offer some grit, both my cockatiels do have it sometimes - per vet recommendation - and they never had problems digesting since :/
That's good! Could it possibly be that the grit has minerals and vitamins that your tiel benefits from? It's often used for this reason in the pigeon/dove community.
@@lizziehn5928 it has a high calcium and mineral content yes, perhaps that's why? I didn't know grit could hurt my tiels, I've been giving it to them because the vet recommended it for them. For the tummy issues. And it worked!
@@NocasCC18 Definitely glad it's helped you! I imagine the type of grit plays a lot into things, I wouldn't exactly feed my parrots red grit and expect no issues. I suppose the calcium makes it similar to eating a cuttlebone? Either way, happy your tiel is doing well :)
@@lizziehn5928 thank you for the understanding! Yes this kind of grit is just crushed shells really, no colourings or anything like that. They do nibble on cuttlebone but not much, they aren't fans. They definitely prefer the grit as a calcium source
I love those rope perches. I now have three of them that sort of make a three-tiered stair case from the bottom level to the top. They're great because they can be bent into any customized shape.
Started out with a sorta smaller cage, not a nice huge flight cage, but not terribly small either. Those small cages can come in handy. I kept mine. I had to use it to quarantine 1 of my budgies. I have also used it for transporting. I am not comfortable with those tiny bird carriers at all. Not when a vet drive is over an hour away. You can also use them as a side cage to explore. Fill it with foraging toys, keep the door open. Let your birds explore it during the day (that is if you let your birds out to free roam).
I currently use my smaller cage as sort of a play cage for my bird. I leave it on the desk open at all times, and hide a treats with some toys, and I change the set up every few weeks. My bird enjoys climbing in and out and all over it, foraging for all the goodies while I work on the computer next to her. My bird's wings aren't clipped, so she flies off whenever she gets bored. Her actual cage is much bigger obviously, and thats where she sleeps. But the smaller cage made for a great play pen Instead of buying a whole new playset.
When your budgie starts screeching around 13:20, is that a bad sound? My budgie does that sometimes and it always sounds like he's yelling at me or complaining about something so I try to alleviate any negative emotions, but I just wanna make sure it's actually a bad sound. I'm a new bird owner and am still trying to recognize what certain sounds may mean.
Elle,i have a question......i can't find millet spray in Amazon , what should I type for that? And all that comes is some seeds I don't want seeds I wanted millets
Thank you this video is very informative. I had considered trying the furry huts, rope toys and honey stick treats. But what you said makes alot of sense, I wouldn't risk my birds' health. So glad I found your video before I spent money on some of these!
I have a bird, and I have one of those tents, NOT the happy huts, one from a pet store called Zoars Ark. Which is also where I got my bird from. He has settled in and likes the tent. He doesn't chew it either. It is a Green Cheek Conure.
grit is actually for softbills who dont hull their seeds and the hulls aren't really digestable so they use hem to grind up the hulls, parrots hull their food and if you give grit, they can eat it and it can destroy their internal organ's walls
It surprised me when Elle mentioned that. I was always under the impression that you should always supply grit for your birds. It makes me wonder if pet shop staff would advise you on that. I guess some would, but there would invariably be some that wouldn't - just to get the sale.
10:21 i only have parrakeets so i didnt know what this was i got a rescue from a lady who had them in a extremly small cage just 3 plastic toys plastic bowels and wood shavings for bedding and this was in one of the bowel i was so confused i didnt know what it was im worried because i have no idea how long she was eating this should i take her to the vet? ive had her a couple months
I would take her to an avian vet, especially if it was rock grit instead of calcium grit. The rocks in there can cause issues with their crops, unfortunately D:
I won't buy a cage like the one she has rn- I understand it's the best but rn I can't... I want to train my bird to have an open cage so I hope that helps...

@@urtiyayeah1946 i keep them properly yes. I made a similar video a couple of months ago and we seem to have picked the same stuff haha! The only thing I'd say is that seagrass huts can still promote hormonal behaviour so I don't usually recommend them either! Hope you and the flock are okay!

Also regarding mirrors I’ve found that if you move the mirror around they don’t fixate on it (at least with my bird)

I’m not even gonna lie…I’ve done so many of these things & omg I’m so ashamed of myself. Luckily it was years ago & didn’t last long. I changed a lot of things so it doesn’t cause harm to my birds & they are all going strong, the oldest being 5 years old! And I’ve still got many more years to go with them☺️
Proud of you for admitting to your mistakes and improving your care! Youre amazing :)
Even some of the best
pet owners have made a mistake. Don’t feel bad about it everybody has made a mistake and nobody is absolutely perfect.
I did the same thing, but i stopped the moment I saw this video
So happy to see you. You may of saved my budgies lives. I thought they didn't chew their rope, but I checked after your video they are. Thank you.
Thank you
If anyone uses shampoo for their bird, consider using aloe instead. It's natural, it makes their skin hydrated and their feathers look beautiful. [:
You don’t need to use anything on your birds 🤦♀️ Just water is fine. They wouldn’t have anything in the wild
@@spyfalls_ fr

This is such good info! I will definitely take this information into consideration when I buy toys for my Pineapple GCC!
Ohhh my goodness I LOVE pineapple green cheek conures!!!
There is evidence of birds dying from natural fibre compaction as well so you still need to replace them when they are really frayed or you witness the bird ingesting it, just to a lesser extent.
coconut fiber is the only edible rope in existence.
@@Leeeuuuhhh no ropes should be ingested :/ just that sisal, seagrass and coconut are less likely to cause an impact ion
I was told to buy a mop head and I line it on the back of the cage, they sleep in it too.
@@robinrossgarrad9794 those fibres are harmful, chemically treated and triggers hormones, that’s probably not a good idea

Well it's been a year, did you still get the bird? 🤨
@@reidamemer1 yeah
thank you elle!
A few ideas:
- Eat (or pretend to eat) the food in front of them.
Anyone who disliked this meant 'DIS I LIKE'.
Well done, Elle. You outdid yourself this time.
Lol I like that

Thank you! As a first time bird owner you have helped so much!
I'm mad at myself for buying a tiny cage. But thankfully I was able to get a bigger cage today (Second day of owning a budgie)

Your video’s help out so much I am a soon to be owner of a bird! Either a lovebird or a cockatiel and I am so excited!
She knows a lot about birds!!
I needed this video cuz I was thinking to buy some stuffs for my birds 🥰
God bless you I was just going to buy one you probably save my birds
My very first budgie I owned over 20 years ago would cuddle under the blanket with me! I thought this was normal bird behaviour at the time....I have had about 5 more budgies since and they DO NOT CUDDLE lol. My current budgie (who was so young I thought he was a she lol) doesn’t even like to be petted! So many personalities!! You’ve helped me so much with my current budgie Mr.Lily. He STILL does not eat fresh fruits and veggies but I dehydrate veggies (NOT fruits since it raises the sugar content) and I sprinkle on his seeds. He refuses to eat pellets. Also regarding mirrors I’ve found that if you move the mirror around they don’t fixate on it (at least with my bird)
Happy huts: Oh We ArE HaRmLesS

I own a dog, fish, a hamster, and I’m getting a bird very soon, I take all your information. My experience shows that, petsmart, Petco and pet supply Do NOT care about the animals, just money and business, PLEASE READ THIS AND LISTEN CLOSELY TO HER VIDEOS!⚠️

I did 8 months of research before I got my cockatiel and I still research and learn more everyday.

My first budgie died because of happy hut 😥 he always took his millet or toys in there and played there (lots of loose strings) and when I got home, I saw he wasn't moving in there but I though he was sleeping, but 2 hours later he still wasn't moving, so I went to check on him and found him tangled to a string and face down while I noticed...he suffocated to death 💔 RIP Guss
He was held in a position where his face pressed against the side and unable to move so he couldn't breath. I wish I could've prevented this and im never buying anything like this ever again. Guss is in a better place now😔
I just realized how much shes blinking. You ok? 😂
