      While he does mainly look like him, and that's great, there's a tendency to lighten established dark skinned characters. We've seen it with Halle Berry's Storm who is explictly darkskin and looks much more afrocentric in the comics, black people are allowed to be annoyed at the constant reducing of darker individuals. Darkskin people are already the subject of much criticism for their skintone, and Hollywood seems to follow a path of "acceptable blackness". I urge you to keep in mind the complexites of racial depiction in media, you may be blind to certain connotations, but black people are not.

    This controversy is beyond stupid. It isn’t colorism. The dude isn’t THAT light skin. Yeah he’s obviously not darker but to say he’s not black enough and that they purposely casted him because they didn’t want a darker actor, y’all are reaching with that.
    Edit: Also, that comment. “Why would you as a light skin man accept a role for a dark skin man?” Will these people keep that same energy when POC actors take the roles of traditionally white characters?

    Omg. He fits the role. Wtf? I don't recall all of this hoopla when a freaking biracial who is 5 foot 1 played Storm who is an AFRICAN and is meant to exude power and regalness. Furthermore, I don't think that people can tell the difference between light and dark-skin anymore. If this dude was Vin diesel light bright playing John Stewart, that would be weird. There's no question that this new guy is black. And I can clearly see him as the Lantern. I don't know what these other people are seeing.

      @@Rev4mpz Aaron Pierre is not less though, he is a win. All shades of black will be within the new DCU. People are arguing about it being colorism, but in the same breath letting Aaron Pierre feel he’s not “black enough”… it’s absolutely insulting to the guy. It wasn’t a bunch of lighter toned black guys auditioning that had DC Studios interest. It was an array of tones, and they overlooked that because Aaron Pierre won them over in test screenings. This just isn’t exactly what people think it is. It’s literally because he fits the action star aesthetic they want. He has the presence, already has the build and martial arts skills to do the work! They start filming in January. It’s definitely not about skin color here, it’s about credentials. They were also interested in Damson Idris, but there was a scheduling conflict; he wouldn’t be able to film him from January to June. Aaron was medium brown in Rebel Ridge… it’s not an issue. Our tones can change up all the time depending on lighting or how much sun we get. He’s not Chris Brown … lol it will be OK.

It’s how they co-opt movements by disguising as allys and enemies. Arial controversy makes sense because its based on a Nordic folklore and her appearance is desribed in explicit detail. Same like Snow White. You can't take over a culture beliefs and then change their mythology. Then chop it up to singing. Its like finding a Chinese or African folklore and then revamping them as white. The hate was justified.

    I think it's because he's already super hero size. Hell as a light skin guy myself, all Arron has to do is spend about a week on the beach & he'll be 3-4 shades darker. Easy fix. I can be outside for 1.5-2 hours cutting grass. When I come in, my arms & belly no longer looked related😂.
    But hey, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'd be more concerned about having actors close to the same size as thise they're portraying, than their color. Hugh Jackman is like 6'3" and Wolverine is supposed to be 5'8". But, he also did a damn good job playing him.
    Also, what about the guy playing Cyborg on Doom Patrol? He's nowhere near the size of Cyborg from the comics/movies.

  • @EliteEasyE
    @EliteEasyE 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I like Pierre for the role. John Stewart in Justice League had green glowing eyes from the lantern power flowing through him so long. Pierre is halfway there 😂
    Love the casting of the dude Marvel played as Darwin in X-Men First Class as Mr. Terrific.
    I'd like to see Winston Duke or Dennis Haysbert as Icon. Since Dennis is older he can mentor and pass the torch to Rocket.
    Maybe Kelvin Harrison Jr. for Anasi? Loved him on Static Shock.
    Speaking of Carl Lumby voice acting roles, I honestly can't take Martian Manhunter seriously unless he right out of the island of Mars. Gotta be Jamaican. Right near the beach, boy.
    There's gotta be a role for John Boyega, as well.
    Is Michael B Jordan's Static happening yet? I know James Gunn is gonna bring us The Wonder Twins, so we likely getting Black Lightning.
    I'd like to see Anthony Jeselnik aa Booster Gold because Patrice O'Neal roasted the hell out of him at the Charlie Sheen roast and i can't see anyone fitting the role better.
    I agree I need to see the suit because if i see ONE Green Lantern motorcycle jacket I'ma flip!

    The fact that they wanted Damson Idris as John Stewart just shows that the pool of black actors is shallow and you can't just keep throwing them in every role just because they're black. They have to be able to carry the role. Franklin Saint? Really? Gtfoh.

    I don’t care how dark…… or not dark… He is perfect for the role let the man do the job! When I first saw him, I thought he would make a great John Stewart. They will have to do a little with his eyes and get this movie made… But I don’t agree that he should have a mentor… I think that is bull crap, keep HAL Jordan out of this… Most of the world only knows John Stewart!

  • @VDOTU5
    @VDOTU5 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    No matter their ancestry, or if they or not human, I will always prefer a character look like how they were made to look when they debuted in non-live-action (or respect the original live-action people they are physically based on, like Yvonne Craig's Barbara Gordon, John Constantine being based on Sting, Raven (DC) based on Persis Khambatta, Mortal Kombat characters, etc.). And one could argue whether the casting call should include "Must have accurate skin and hair color (if not, we can dye the hair)". Especially as one who has loved John Stewart since watching the 'Justice League' cartoon air, of course I wanted less like Common in JL: Mortal, more like Wayne T. Carr in the Snyder Cut. I even had the same energy for the Nani casting in the live-action Lilo & Stitch. Although, that's a case where dark-skin Pacific Islander women nearly never get any roles in anything, so I much rather a live-action Nani had "only dark skin Polynesian women" in the casting call. I may not like the realistic Disney rehash movie stuff, but if they are gonna do it, go all the way, but they don't, hence Sebastian and Flounder and the Cave of Wonders are ugly.
    But I can have preferences while still enjoying the potential of a good performance on inaccurate physical appearance. According to Gunn himself, Aaron's audition had the most convincing performance out of all they looked at. Just like with Halle Bailey as Ariel. And, apparently, with the actress who played Musa in Netflix's Winx who did not look like Musa (I did not care for that show, I wanted the Musa I grew up with to be East Asian, but she is the best actor in the show). It is what it is. Plus, Aaron has the proper head/facial structure. For non-live-action portrayals, I don't accept skin tone changes, that's a deliberate choice. Nor raceswapping, it's boring *unless* original non-Euro human characters are also present, and unless the Redhead raceswap keeps the Redhead genes. Nothing wrong with Afro, Latin, Polynesian, Asian Redhead rep.
    BUT, since we already had light-skin Storm, I am only hoping for accurate-skin Ororo Munroe. Comic book artists already have an issue with flip-flopping on African women's skin tone, same with Karen Beecher/Bumblebee. Anna Diop is on my mind for Storm. Marsai Martin is on my mind for Bumblebee.
    Edit: Wait, I do have exceptions when it comes to preferring characters looking as they were intended to be. The Umbrella Academy being made in the 2000s with randomly selected women becoming asexually pregnant with superbabies should never have been all or mostly one shared ancestry. They were mostly European, but I'd say the same if they were any type of Asian, African, Indigenous American, etc., they should be diverse. Also, He-Man came out in the 1980s, that and other such cartoons are in a time when being more diverse was way more acceptable than when the Fantastic Four were created. I want at least some to be swapped (I hope Camila keeps the red hair for Teela). X-Men is one where I want all Euro-descent Mutants to stay as is, as I rather the underlying narrative of "Hetero white people knowing what it's like to face heavy discrimination for what they were born as (especially without being Redheads), and technically being safer than non-Euro Mutants if their mutation disappeared". That is a strong aspect that many don't realize.

    Claiming "not black enough" is EVIL. If it were a case like Zendaya’s, you could understand where people are coming from she’s in ALL major blockbusters and can profit from roles where she's black often cast in roles where her ethnicity can appear ambiguous, like in Dune and other youth-focused films, which might make you wonder if Hollywood realizes there are other Black actresses. But come on, this is a young actor who’s only starting to get noticed! Aaron Pierre is just beginning to land bigger roles, and people are already criticizing him for 'not being Black enough'? Shame on YALL ! Besides, in comic books, character appearances change from artist to artist. The same goes for Cyborg sometimes he’s drawn with darker skin, other times lighter.

      Really great point! And thats the thing. The outrage… I can understand it in some cases, but this particular casting ain’t it. The comic films don’t usually stick to lore 100% so when it comes to casting they have veered. Consistently.
    In the MCU, Sam is a brown man. Wonder Man is about to be a dark brown man, where he was previously a white character. Bishop is dark brown. Nick Storm is dark brown and he was always white in the comics. Roadie went from light to dark brown. Black Panther was dark brown and the next one will also be. Relax. WTF?
    The first Green Lantern in the brand new DCU is the Black one, and he’ll do a fine job.
    Ya’ll are right. We just need more Black ppl in good projects period. None of these projects need to be Black trauma films either.
