Love Ghost. Saw the show last tour-it was fantastic. Tobias has said the next album will be more guitar-driven. As long as he keeps writing great songs, I'm fine whatever direction. I'm looking forward to it.
I'll never forget when they opened up for Iron Maiden when we saw them live! My family fell in love with Ghost and enjoyed them more than Iron Maiden's performance!
1. Opus Eponymous - `Ritual` is one of those very rare songs that I can listen to repeatedly without getting bored. The outro guitar solo must be in my top 20 solos of all time. Love it! 2. Meliora - Great album even better if you can get the deluxe edition. 3. `Square Hammer` all by itself beating the next two albums lol! What a TUNE!! 4. Infestissumam 5. Prequelle I like the most recent 7" release `Kiss The Go-Goat`/`Mary On A Cross`!
I fought against listening to Ghost for a very long time . I looked at the image and thought "not another gimmick band ". How wrong was I ! I had my first Ghost listen at the beginning of 2019 and spent the rest of the year catching up on their back catalogue. What a brilliant band , heavy ,melodic and you can hear every word . Can't wait for their new album 🍺🥃🤘👍👻
Ghost has honestly became like a top 10 band/artist of all time at this point, metal or otherwise. Tobias is an absolutely BRILLIANT composer and is on huge roll with the film, etc. Even Impera has become a favorite...I honestly can't rank their stuff besides Meliora being number one still. We may very well be in the midst of another Iron Maiden type of band...legendary, original, popular, distinct image, etc. I think history will treat Ghost with absolute adoration.
I've read most of the comments here below, and I find myself in some of them; bought the albums, liked the music, but didn't get the complete picture until I saw them Live. That made the final piece drop into place. Think about Kiss, Alice Cooper etc, it's (good) music + imagery + show = fan-devotion. Tobias has a really good feeling for what should be done and how to do it, and he even took it one step further with their background videos on TH-cam, planting the latest two song-releases with Papa Nihl in the sixties (to explain the music-style), which means he can basically release music based on various musicstyles explained by the Ghost-lore. I'd love to see you interview Tobias, I understand he's a big vinyl-collector.
I was a huge fan of Prequelle when it came out, it was my all time favourite Ghost album. Still love the album, as I do all their albums, but definitely nowhere near their best looking back, and I don't go back to it too much nowadays (other than the singles). Their recent 12 inch disc was awesome aswell, although yeah miles away from the metal sound My ranking is probably 4) Infestissumam 3) Prequelle 2) Opus Eponymous 1) Meliora
Ghost are unbelievably catchy. They’re a band that you’ll be humming or singing the chorus after the first listen. I agree with you Pete, I always thought of them as a pop band.
Same for me, but I wouldn't say that would be the "objective" ranking of their best record - if there can even be such a thing, as all art is subjective, right?
Tobias Forge, the singer, had a band called Subvision before Ghost. Their album "So Far So Noir" is very good. Not as hard, but the songs are all well done. Also he sang for Repugnant which is good, but production sounds like it was recorded in a tin can.
1 - Meliora 2 - Prequelle 3 - Infesstissumam 4 - Opus Eponymous Saw Them Live Last October. Show Was Set Up Like An Alice Cooper Show. One Of The Best Shows I Have Seen To Date. They Have Alot Of 70's Rock Influence In Them. I Hear Alot Of Uriah Heap. In Their Music.
Ghost did a very nice cover of one of my favourite Roky Erickson songs, If You Have Ghosts. By the way, I think Roky is very underrepresented on this channel. Anyway, are you on the level? Love and greetings from Germany.🤘🎶🎧
I was initially very dismissive of this band. I gave Prequelle a chance and they have grown on me immensely. Rats, He Is, Square Hammer, Cirice, Year Zero are favorites so far. Haven't listened to an entire album yet.
I'd rank them in order of release. I like all of their albums but I like each one a little less than the last. Also, love your channel Pete. Been binge watching lately.
Leaving a comment right in the beginning of the video - I will follow up with another one after I'm done. I came to know Ghost through Meliora, and that is the absolute pinnacle of the band. I liked some of the debut, I liked some of Infestissumam, but I wasn't crazy about either of them as a whole. I find Meliora absolutely amazing and I fear they will not reach these heights again. The songs, the production, the sound, the artwork, lyrics... Everything fits together and it is one of my favorite records of the last couple of years.
Nice video. Still need to check out these guys and also been avoiding them. I'd love to see a ranking of Incantation and/or Immolation. These two bands are so great and have extensive catalogs.
Love those guys. Saw them opening for Metallica and they absolutely kicked ass. Their conceptual storytelling from one album to another is what makes them so captivating. 1. Meliora (+ the EP which is glorious) 2. Prequelle 3. Opus Eponymous 4. Infestissumam
Good ranking as always Pete! Have you heard Tribulation? If not I absolutely recommend them. They started playing old school Swedish death metal and then ventured into prog and psychedelic grounds. Their lead guitar played with Tobias Forge in Repugnant.
Been a fan since Infestissumam , and saw them live on the Pope Star Tour. I definitely took my time getting into Ghost, as I wanted to make sure I liked the music. Here is my list, 2 and 3 can flip at any time. 1. Infestissumam 2. Opus Eponymous 3. Meliora 4. Prequelle I have heard the next album is supposed to be heavier.
Saw Ghost in 2015 with a friend who's a fan; they had the female-fronted British outfit Purson opening up. Real enjoyable show. Definitely rooted in 60s/70s hard rock and proto-metal.
First album is sooo great. Love it. Worshipped it. I grew less interested with the next album, and pretty much stopped listening to them altogether shortly after that.
Dismissed these guys as a gimmick until I saw them live as they toured for Opus Eponymous. After seeing them live I gave the album a real listen and realized that it was actually really good. Cool stuff.
IMHO, Tobias Forge, lead singer of Ghost is a genius!! While "Prequelle" is a good album in it's own right, "Meliora" is a classic!! Thanks for reviewing this excellent band.
For a band that has only been around 10 years, I've developed pretty strong opinions about them. They are great live too. 4) Infestissumam (they branch out their sound on this one, but the second half of the album I don't enjoy too much. Favorite tracks - Secular Haze, Ghuleh/Zombie Queen) 3) Prequelle (More pop rock influence and wider sonic pallette. But not the strongest material throughout. Favorite tracks - Rats, Miasma) 2) Opus Eponymous (Great debut, the only thing holding it back is some of it seems to be too retro-rock and they haven't found their niche yet. Favorite tracks - Ritual, Genesis) 1) Meliora (So far, their masterpiece. The best songs front to back. Favorite tracks - From the Pinnacle to the Pit, He Is)
I am one of the ones who likes the new direction being a fan of 80's era pop hooks but like the older releases as well so for me 1. Meliora 2. Prequelle 3. Opus Eponymous 4. Infesstisumam
@@robertwiesler381 No reason to feel guilty. You are actually very lucky and I'm envious that you still have an opportunity to discover them! Just start with Opus Eponymous and listen to an album side at a time. No rush. The problem will be that you might want to play certain songs over again since they are so infectious. Cheers!
anyone else catch the homage to the 1980's Salem's Lot (TV mini-series/movie) movie poster on Ghost's first album cover? when i first got that album, i knew there was something familiar about it. a quick Google search and there it was. *** Meliora is definitely my favourite Ghost album (masterful songwriting and fun, classy tunes) Infestissumam (many songs nearly as catchy as those on Meliora) Opus Eponymous (heaviest of them all, yet still melodic... a strong debut) Prequelle (pronounced pre-kell, I have heard... sort of liked it at first, but kinda forgettable) don't forget to check out their non-album tracks on EPs, etc.... there are also some great cover songs, too also, on their EP, If You Have Ghost, the artwork simulates images from the 1922 horror movie Nosferatu... very cool that these guys incorporate that stuff into their imagery
Discovered Ghost last year and was quickly blown away. IMHO Meliora is the best rock album in decades. How do you even describe it? Sabbath meets BOC meets Mercyful Fate meets ABBA meets Broadway. Also, Square Hammer and Rats are two of the best rock singles in many years. Beyond that though, Prequelle didn't grab me, nor has much of the earlier stuff. Meliora, Square Hammer and Rats though are better than anything I have heard in a LONG time.
The interviews with Tobias are interesting- he's a very intelligent guy. I think Pete nailed this one- agree all the way! Any hope of a Nightwish ranking?
I was exactly the same Pete, I avoided Ghost like the plague at first as thought they were all about the image, with no musical substance. It was actually hearing Prequelle that changed my mind. I really love that album, though I agree it is heading to the more accessible side of the spectrum & I think Tobias himself has acknowledged that. Melioria would be my #1 though, and ‘He Is’ would shade it as favourite song on the album.....fantastic stuff🤘🏻
it was the horror-show costumes that grabbed me right away... me being a fan of (early) Kiss. but looking past the image, the music is just so strong, with a lot of imagination and songwriting and instrumental ability.
Infestissumam is probably my favourite, but have you heard their new single and b-side? Very 60s psych almost early deep purple with a more evil sounding touch. Very cool
Look past the imagery and you'll find a very enjoyable band whose sound surprises.. Even for this prog fan, there's enough interesting stuff going on, Ghost can happily coexist in my collection alongside Neal Morse! Imagine a band that combines Ozzy, Blue Oyster Cult, Rainbow, and a hint of Rush or Marillion, you'll get something like Ghost. Meilora is very good, Prequelle even more commercial but still good. You reminded me I need to buy Infantesumam to complete the set.
I like Ghost and think they have a very cool, interesting sound. Rats is def a catchy tune Ever think of doing a top ten song or album show on Wasp or Soen? they have a lot of worthy material.
I loved their first album. A lot of classic hard rock/metal vibes, and they had a very unique sound back then. The second album was alright, but lacked the edge the first one had. Album three was pretty good and is my second favorite album. The latest album didn't do it for me. It sounded very safe and had a generic hard rock/metal radio sound.
I totally agree with you. "Opus Eponymous" is good. "Infestissumam" is ok. "Meliora" is a masterpiece imo. Really great. "Prequelle" sucks. Ok. one or two ok songs then. ;) I hope they go back to heavier songs on their coming 2021 album. If not. I'm out. Thx again Pete for a great show. Rock on!
The music is "damn" good but personally I can't get past the lyrical content on some songs. It's my personal choice. But I have to tell you the talent there is obvious and the dude can write great music and the band is solid.
I really don't know what is "metal audience" and why we have to categorize people that way. And does that even exist anymore? All of my friends (and me included) who listen to metal also listen other genres like rock, pop, synthwave, punk etc. And most of them also dig Ghost quite a bit :) Good show once again Pete! ✊
Good video Pete! And I agree 100% with the rankings you gave the albums. "Prequelle" was a definite letdown for me. It shows how important Martin (Omega) and Simon (Alpha) were to the band. Just listen to Magna Carta Cartel or Time Is Divine to understand why Ghost is a different band without them.
I believe I mentioned ghost in one of your comment sections. I have “Opus Eponymus”. I mentioned that ghost had a 1970s Blue Oyster Cult vibe and I thought that ghost did the Blue Oyster Cult sound better than Blue Oyster Cult. Then a person wanted to argue with me that I do not know anything about Blue Oyster Cult. Also some of ghost’s songs have a fox trot beats; one two three; one, two, three; one, two, three beats as opposed to the one, two, three, four beat or the one, two; one, two; one, two beats.
You know what makes Ghost really great? I checked so many album rankings and they are so different. Some albums are the best for some fans and other albums are the best for other fans. For instance look at Iron Maiden (whom I really like and respect), most almost all rankings are like this: Blaze albums, No Prayer... FotD are on the bottom, while Number of the Beast, Powerslave, Seventh Son are on the top. Most fans agree. However, in case of Ghost the opinion of the fans are so inconsistent and I think this makes the band very interesting. My personal ranking (best to "not the best"): 1. Prequelle 2. Meliora 3. Impera 4. Infestissumam 5. Opus Eponymous (you might agree or disagree)
Tobias said the band will go in a heavier direction for their next album. Solid ranking. Meliora is also my favorite. Thanks for doing this Pete.
First album is still my favorite. I think it is absolutely brilliant! Meliora is second for me, though it is also very well done!
I agree. Their first and their third album are their best ones.
@@Danimal77 They probably will alternate and do heavier albums every other album.
- I cant understand what everybody finds interesting in them.
A day later.
- RRRRRRRRRRRRRRATS
Right there with you. They sound like what girls into One direction are into now they're teens & mad at their dad.
More like: WWRAAAAAATS, OH UH OH OH!!
Meliora is my favourite as well. I think its brilliant from start to finish. cant wait to see what they do next
Meliora is great, kind of fell off after that for whatever reason. Saw them during the tour for the second record, they were pretty awesome.

@@onemarathon7813 Will do! Thank you for the recommendation.
I totally agree with you.
"Opus Eponymous" is good.
"Infestissumam" is ok.
"Meliora" is a masterpiece imo. Really great.
"Prequelle" sucks. Ok. one or two ok songs then. ;)
I hope they go back to heavier songs on their coming 2021 album. If not. I'm out.
Thx again Pete for a great show. Rock on!
4. Prequelle
3. Infestissumam
2. Opus Eponymous
1. Meliora
Can we rank the Papas next?
You are right about the psychedelic vibe on Meliora. Listen to the song Spirit and think Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd.
I used to refer to them as Mercyful Floyd when they started.
The music is "damn" good but personally I can't get past the lyrical content on some songs. It's my personal choice. But I have to tell you the talent there is obvious and the dude can write great music and the band is solid.
Yep. That’s my ranking too.
1. Meliora/Prequelle
2. Opus
3. Infestissumam
1) Opus Eponymous
2) Infestissumam
3) Meliora
4) Prequelle
I believe I mentioned ghost in one of your comment sections. I have “Opus Eponymus”. I mentioned that ghost had a 1970s Blue Oyster Cult vibe and I thought that ghost did the Blue Oyster Cult sound better than Blue Oyster Cult. Then a person wanted to argue with me that I do not know anything about Blue Oyster Cult. Also some of ghost’s songs have a fox trot beats; one two three; one, two, three; one, two, three beats as opposed to the one, two, three, four beat or the one, two; one, two; one, two beats.
I think I heard in an interview that Tobias said the next album would be heavier. 1. Meliora, 2. Prequelle, 3. Infesstisumam, 4. Opus Eponymous
My personal ranking (best to "not the best"):
1. Prequelle
2. Meliora
3. Impera
4. Infestissumam
5. Opus Eponymous
(you might agree or disagree)
