In no particular order, my pick of the day is Clive Burr of Iron Maiden. Really enjoyed Clive in Iron Maiden. #8 for me is Brian Downey. Brian Downey has probably always been a bit underrated as the drummer of Thin Lizzy because of the attention to Phil Lynott, and the many great guitarists playing twin harmonies within the catalogue of great songs the band created. Some of my favorite Thin Lizzy songs featuring Brian’s badass drumming include: Bad Reputation, The Holy War, Warrior, and Massacre.
My #8 pick is an English drummer and percussionist who first gained prominence as a founding member of the progressive rock band Yes. After leaving Yes in 1972, He spent the rest of the 1970s recording and touring with King Crimson (1972-1974), Roy Harper (1975), and U.K. (1978), as well as touring with Genesis (1976). In 1978, he formed his own group, Bruford, which was active until 1980. I'm talking about Bill Bruford. During the 1980s, Bruford returned to King Crimson for three years (1981-1984), collaborated with several artists (including Patrick Moraz and David Torn), and formed his own electric jazz band Earthworks in 1986. He then played with his former Yes bandmates in Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, which eventually led to a very brief second stint in Yes. Bruford played in King Crimson for his third and final tenure from 1994 to 1997, then continued with a new acoustic configuration of Earthworks. In 2009, Bruford announced his retirement from professional drumming. He pursued other projects, including the operation of his two record labels, Summerfold and Winterfold, releasing an autobiography, and speaking and writing about music. In 2016, Bruford received a PhD in Music from the University of Surrey. That year, Bruford ranked No. 16 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Drummers of All Time".[1] In 2017, Bruford was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes.[2] In 2022, after a 13-year hiatus, he returned to live performance as a member of the Pete Roth Trio. Many other drummers have cited Bruford as an influence, including Danny Carey,[58] Mike Portnoy,[59] Matt Cameron,[60] Brann Dailor,[61] Tim "Herb" Alexander,[62] Gene Hoglan,[63] Aaron Harris,[64] Chad Cromwell,[65] Ben Koller,[66][67] Chris Pennie,[68] Steve Arrington,[69] Mac McNeilly,[70] Morgan Simpson of Black Midi,[71] Eric Kretz,[72] and Martin Dosh.[73] In addition, other artists have been quoted expressing admiration for his work including Neil Murray,[74] Jimmy Keegan,[75] and Adrian Younge. When interviewed in 1982, Bruford commented on his ability to compose for King Crimson. "It's very hard to know how to communicate in a band like that where the individuals are competent enough to produce their own kinds of sounds, it's very hard to write for a band like that." Albums- Discipline Red(King Crimson)and Close To The Edge(Yes) Song- Red

Today my pick #8 is Alex Van Halen. 3 albums I’m picking are Van Halen self titled debut, Van Halen II, Women and Children First. Song imo his best drum performance and he’s got so many, I always love I’m the one, such a killer song
8: Alex VH This guy and his little brother came up with about A hundred rhythm n riff greats, I wonder how many are in the vault? Obviously overshadowed by King Edward, seldom played the same beats on different songs. Had to play The concerts with a neck brace for a while. Hot for Teacher, On Fire, Light up the Sky, Romeo delight, Mean Street, Dirty Movies, Full Bug, House of Pain, 5150, Dreams - I think the electronic drums are sort of cool, Cabo wabo, Pound cake, and just want everybody to listen to the album at the end. A Different kind of Truth kicks Arse! R.i.P. EVH

@@dennisstratton6508Thank you, Dennis. I've also been a big fan since I first heard his music in 1984. So far I already had Chester Thompson, Aynsley Dunbar and Chad Wackerman on my list. Another drummer is still to come.
My pick # 8 was with just another band out of Boston. The late Sib Hashian is tonight's drummer. The albums are Boston and Don't Look Back. The song is Foreplay/Long Time.
8.Steve Smith - Though known mostly for thumping for Journey, Smith has spent most of his career playing jazz fusion, in his own outfit, Vital Information, as well as appearing with many other artists. Album picks are Tony Macalpine - Edge of Insanity, Jean-Luc Ponty - Enigmatic Ocean, and Vital Information - Live Around the World. Track pick is Vehicle, by Players
Don’t think anyone has mentioned Graeme Edge of The Moody Blues. Seen him 23 times in concert. He was never the primary drummer in concert, but a great entertainer. Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band. Legend of a Mind. The Voice.
you're wrong Tony... I had him at # 26 in my list, and I remember that @melaniethurber5117 also had him on his list.BTW you're a very lucky guy... I have never seen them live
My pick today is Phil Ehart of Kansas! My 3 favorite albums he plays on are Song For America Leftoverture and Point of Know Return and my favorite performance by him is Death of Mother Nature Suite
8. Tony Williams ... my pick # 8 is Pete's pick #9 from yesterday. I completely agree with those picks. Out to Lunch indeed. Miles Davis Quintet, Lifetime --- Stanley Clarke (1974) -- George Cables "Phantom Of The City" (1985) -- Jackie McLean "Vertigo" Kenny Dorham "Una Mas" both from '63
Got to love Ian Paice. I saw him with Whitesnake, and I believe he was still with Gary Moore when I saw him around 1984-ish. The combination of power and groove was ahead of its time and his main influences - big band jazz players like Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa - really show in his playing.
My day 23 favorite drummer is John Bonham - Led Zeppelin - 1. Led Zeppelin IV, 2. Led Zeppelin II and 3. Led Zeppelin III - Favorite song - Gallows Pole. 1. Andy Ward - Camel - 1. Mirage, 2. Jojo Mayer I first saw him play live with the Screaming Headless Torsos, not knowing who he or the band were. But I was amazed to see a drummer who could play like Dave Weckl. But then a couple years later I saw him at the Modern Drummer Festival and he blew everyone away. Then, for an entire summer, I saw him play with his band Nerve every week at a venue that no longer exists called Izzy Bar. His chops at that time were so beyond what everyone was doing, and I got to hang out right next to his kit every week. He completely influenced drummers with his ability to play complicated drum n bass/electronic rhythms. You can hear it in a lot of current jazz and fusion drummers today.
Ian Paice was not only an awesome timekeeper, not only a fantastic improvisator , not only a thunderous force of nature... he could always SWING!!! (which, IMO, is his most notable advantage "against" the heavy handed John Bonham - who was also one of the very very best, but...)
I always felt that Paicey was the best of the big three of seventies rock, the others being Ward and Bonham, both great in their own right but Paicey always had that extra bit of 'something else' that made him so special.
Hey Pete! We have the same pick today. Great minds! The rest is in some kind of order: 8) Ian Paice Albums: Machine Head In Rock Burn Perfect Strangers Songs: Smoke On the Water Child In Time Flight of the Rat Pictures of Home Lay Down Stay Down Woman From Tokyo Perfect Strangers And many more! 8) Ian Paice 9) Charlie Watts 10) Andy Parker 11) Clive Burr 12) Levon Helm 13) Jason Bonham 14) Keith Moon 15) Nick Mason 16) Nicko McBrain 17) Tommy Aldridge 18) Max Weinberg 19) John Panozzo 20) Doug Clifford 21) Joey Kramer 22) Carmine Appice 23) Vinny Appice 24) Alex Van Halen 25) Ginger Baker 26) Roger Taylor 27) Kenny Aronoff 28) Steve Smith 29) Dylan Sevey 30) Jeff Porcaro
@@weirddebbiem1619 hi Debbie. I figured you would have Paice coming up on your list by the way you answered me back yesterday. Tomorrow morning we have another match coming up. I see we have 12 matches so far by counting up what you have and 3 more matches that I haven’t posted yet.

Jon Hiseman🪦- Colosseum (I & II) / Tempest 11. Don Brewer - Grand Funk Railroad / Bob Seger 12. Matt Abts - Gov't Mule 13. Brian Downey - Thin Lizzy {listed by Peter} 14. John Bonham🪦- U know! 15. 👍🏻 Noting that "Fireball" is one of my favourite DP albums, top 3 for sure if not the first 😃 It has aged rather well for me and I still can listen to the whole album despite all the circumstances 😐 And yes, you definitely need both versions with "Demon's Eye" and "Strange Kind Of Woman", liked them both very much, still do I think 🙂 And the above comment is rather obvious in general 😀 Thank you!
8 - Blake Richardson Favorites are Between the Buried and Me - Coma Ecliptic, Colors, The Great Misdirect. Love Obfuscation as my favorite track. Fantastic live. Mixes extreme metal with just about everything. Speed, precision, variety, and power.
He's my number one. Could play straight or be better really inventive. Rick Wakeman talks about him being technically brilliant..Can rick, be funky, jazzy, such speed, and listens to everyone else in a band, reacting accordingly. On Burn and play Down, Stay Down there are fills everywhere, but although busy it never overpowers the songs. As good as Bonham or Moon, and I'd say was more versatile than either but underrated.
I'm sure this is a little-known fact regarding his appearances on non-Deep Purple albums: He was the drummer on Squeeze by the Velvet Underground (1972). An infamous album.
KEITH MOON - THE WHO - Albums: Tommy, and Pinball Wizard; Who’s Next, won’t get fooled again, and from Quadrophenia , 5:15. Favourite performance - Bargain from Who’s Next.
I agree Ian Paice as solid and in the pocket better than anyone ! I gotta go w the unbelievable Buddy Rich who i was fortunate to see live at MSG in the 80's at the halftime of a college basketball game!
Pick #8 - John Panozzo, Styx - Versatile drummer whose well-placed drum fills sometimes seemed like another harmony in the Styx arsenal. Worked with Tommy and Dennis ideally. Rest in peace!
#8...Jai Johanny Johanson, Butch Trucks. The twin engine of the Allman Brothers Band, Butch keeping the basic rhythm of each song and Jaimoe adding his jazz inspired fills, they backed up the brilliant guitars of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley's crunchy bass lines and Gregg Allman's rich voice and B3 organ. Best 3 albums...the debut album, Idlewild South and Eat A Peach. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed as the best song with honorable mention to any live version of Mountain Jam.
No.8…Keith Moon-The Who. A brilliant drummer, with so many different patterns of playing. I call him The Maniac, because of his wild antics and hard hitting effects on the drums. So many songs to choose from, but my favorite is The Real Me. Love his style of playing on that song. (RIP) Keith.
8. Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) Nicko didn't join Maiden into their fourth album, my favorite, Piece of Mind. Like Bruce in the album before, he had a lot to prove, and the awsome fill in the album opener "Where Eagles Day" cemented his future as the final, legendary drummer for the best metal band on the planet. Fun fact, he played in french metal band Trust in 1981-83, and when swapped places with Clive Burr, who briefly played with Trust after Maiden.
Iron Maiden - Piece Of Mind (1983) Iron Maiden - Powerslave (1984) Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son (1988)
Great drummer indeed!! My #8: Going with a drummer who's no longer with us, but was with the same band for close to 50 years. Not a real flashy drummer, but he certainly got the job done!! Talking about Charlie Watts from the Rolling Stones. Albums: Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers Song: Sympathy For The Devil

At day # 23, I take a bow to the great late 8. LEE KERSLAKE (Uriah Heep, Ozzy) Lee’s early years as a musician started in the second half of the 60s, when he was with “The Gods”, a group with rather unknown talented musicians at the time, who later in the 70s became highly popular in other bands. Some of their names are still well remembered in R&R history nowadays: Greg Lake, Mick Taylor and John Glasscock, for instance. And there also have been Paul Newton, Ken Hensley and Lee… the three of them later to become known as important and respected members of Uriah Heep. Lee joined Uriah Heep in 1972, after the band already had released their first three albums, becoming the band’s first “steady” drummer… and to be looked upon later as one of the five members of the “classic” line-up of the band. Their first two albums which they both recorded with him in 1972, are regarded being among the best in their discography: “Demons And Wizards”, followed by “The Magician’s Birthday”. Until 1978, Lee recorded 7 more studio albums with the band, and then left because of difficulties with their band management led by Gerry Bron at the time. He became part of Ozzy Osbourne’s band then. After helping to record his first two albums, Lee felt being treated badly by Ozzy and his wife, and soon after he re-joined Uriah Heep in 1982, recording another 7 studio albums, and doing a lot of touring with the band. In 2007, Lee announced that due to health issues he would have to retire from the band, but would be part of an occasional project (Berggren Kerslake Band, 2014), also doing some on/off guest appearances with Uriah Heep in the later years. Great Heep albums with Lee: the two already mentioned above from 1972, “Sea Of Light” from 1995, and the “Live 1973” double album. Songs: “The Magician’s Birthday” middle section (guitar/drum battle), “Gipsy” from the 1973 live album, “Pilgrim”, “Return To Fantasy”, “Against The Odds”, “Love In Silence”, “Crazy Train” (the latter on Ozzy’s debut album). And not to forget, the bitter-sweet ballad “Come Back To Me”, which has been mainly his composition, beautifully sung by John Lawton. Lee sadly passed away in 2020 at age 73, having suffered from prostate cancer for some years up to this point, but posthumously surprised us with his first (and only) solo album “Eleventeen”, which was released a few months after his passing. His song and video “Celia Sienna” proved his great talent as a singer. Of course, every real Uriah Heep fan knows well that he has always been a great backing and harmony vocalist in the band during the decades, on and off his drum playing. On the video it is also beautiful to witness that Mick Box and Lee remained best friends in and out of Uriah Heep, until the sad end. Mick has always said that he loved Lee that much as if he had been his brother… not just a friend . Rest in peace, Lee… and thank you for all the beautiful music. 08. Lee Kerslake 09. @@ziggyzagzi8017 Thank you kindly, Ziggy! I always have adored Lee for what he's done in Uriah Heep, and I can understand why Mick loved him so much. They have been real brothers in mind.
11 - 15 Cozy Powell Albums: Rainbow Rising(1976), Jeff Beck Group(1972) & Whitesnake Slide It In(1984) Song “Slide It In”. Cozy was a tower of power on twin bass drums. I think this is Pete’s #1 on his list. And deservedly so. Elvin Jones Albums: John Coltrane My Favorite Things(1961), John Coltrane Live at Birdland(1964), & John Coltrane A Love Supreme(1965). Song “Keiko’s Birthday March” from the album Puttin’ It Together(1968). Elvin was arguably the greatest jazz drummer of the 1960’s…especially with Coltrane. He inspired many rock drummers including Mitch Mitchell of JHE. He really made the kit come alive with style ! Spencer Dryden Albums: With Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow(1967), Bless Its Pointed Little Head(1969) & Volunteers(1969). Song “Bear Melt” at 11min is an amazing display of drumming ! Spencer’s half uncle was the great Charlie Chaplin. But he kept that a secret while in the JA so he could make it on his own merit. He was a jazz styled drummer in a rock band. He jelled so well with bassist Jack Casady and lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen. They were incredible together best witnessed on the live BIPLH recordings from 1968 at Fillmore East and West. Neil Peart …I know he should be rated higher. And on technical merit yes. But I am not a big Rush fan. (But they are growing with me). That said I enjoy his early work when he had a twin bass drum kit. I don’t care much for all the tiny drums and weird stuff he added to his kit over the years. He was no doubt one of the best ever to play the drums. Albums: Fly By Night(1975), Permanent Waves(1980), Moving Pictures(1981). Song “Anthem”. Micky Waller Albums: Jeff Beck Truth(1968), Rod Stewart Every Picture Tells a Story(1971) & Never A Dull Moment(1972). Song “Shapes of Things” from Truth. Micky had a sound that I just love. He was very similar to Keith Moon in that he filled the empty spaces on songs with his powerful drumming. Micky may be the best drummer most people don’t know. He made the drums sing with joy !

# 8- BUDDY MILES Hi everyone. Today go with the late great Buddy Miles and fantastic whether he did solo stuff he did great or was with The Electric Flagh band of the 60s or Jimi Henrdrix and The Band Of Bypsys or with Carlos Santana or any work playing drums for someone he would deliver and could have a soulful singing voice that was so great as well. George Allen "Buddy" Miles Jr. (September 5, 1947 - February 26, 2008) was an American composer, drummer, guitarist, vocalist and producer. He was a founding member of the Electric Flag (1967), a member of Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys (1969-1970), founder and leader of the Buddy Miles Express and later, the Buddy Miles Band. Miles also played and recorded with Carlos Santana, John McLaughlin, and others. He also sang lead vocals on the California Raisins claymation TV commercials and recorded two California Raisins R&B albums. =========== So go with THE ELECTRIC FLAG and A LONG TIME COMIN' album then with BUDDY MILES solo THEM CHANGES album then with JIMI HENDRIX and THE BAND OF GYPSYS at the Fillmore East album off ELECTRIC FLAG lp Killing Floor ,,, Groovin Ain't Easy .. Texas as some HMS. The album is good and got vinyl of it, The ELECTRIC FLAG played Monterey Pop Festival in 67, They were great, Then next HMS to THEM CHANGES album the title track so good and Allman Bros cover of Dreams.. Neil Young cover of Down By The River and his stuff and the albums is great, I had or got ythe vinyl, Loved it. Then Go with BAND OF GYPSYS album and of course Jimi is spectacular, Billy Cox on bass great and Buddy Miles. top songs HMS, Have the CD of it. Some cassettes too of the time. Of Who Knows Buddy does a great Them Changes Good drums with Power Of Soul and great We Gotta Live Together. Jimi smokin on these tracks. And so the selection go with MACHINE GUN off Band Of Gypsys. You hear 3 of them shine and BUDDY fantastic on the drums on it Oh man. So there you arte enjoy my pick. Pete great for Ian Paice Will have him later Take care and love hugs and prayers all, 🎶🎶🥁❤🤗🙏☮
My pick today is a US drummer whose address book must be full of some of the most stellar names in rock especially the hard rock side of music. His list of bands he's played with is an almost who's who of US hard rock. DENNY CARMASSI. His amazing list of credits include (but are not limited to) Montrose (the first 4 albums), Gamma, Sammy Hagar solo, Heart, Joe Walsh, Whitesnake, Cinderella. Can always be relied upon to do a great job for whoever he's playing with. Favourite albums for Denny, the first Montrose album (Had to be didn't it?), Gamma 2 and Heart's self titled album. My favourite performance is Rock Candy where Denny gets to channel his inner John Bonham and just belt the hell out of his kit with one of the most cavernous of drum sounds.
@ramonace4770 Thank you Ramon. We can't always remember and nominate everyone we'd necessarily want to. Like you I've seen a few nominations on here where I've thought "damn, how did I forget him/her" and I'm sure you and I arnt the only ones.

Pick # 8: Jim Gordon Derek and the Dominoes: "Layla and other assorted love songs" released on Polydor Records in '70. Steely Dan: "Pretzel Logic" released on ABC records in '74. Traffic: " The low spark of high-heeled boys" released on Island Records in '71 Jim Gordon performed on countless rock bands as a session drummer throughout the sixties. By the early to mid-seventies, he began succumbing to schizophrenia. Information regarding time is sparse, with reports that medical doctors misdiagnosing his mental illness as alcoholism. How even the the most least trained doctor can fail to recognize or distinguish between these two widely separate illnesses suggests either a discriminatory attitude towards long haired hippy musicians by a conservative medical establishment or willful stupidity. If the latter, malpractice would be legally warranted, in my opinion. Left untreated, a severe psychotic break led him to kill his 71 year old mother in "83. He was convicted and sentenced and died at Vacaville in 2023. At the risk of being prolix, I think a discussion of the pressures of performing and the toll it can take on performers. Eric Clapton attributes his almost lifelong addiction to drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism. Jimi Hendrix, et. al. Schizophrenia has a genetic component, but to some extent it takes environmental stress to trigger it. JIm Gordon may have had the unfortunate fate of being destined to suffer the rest of his life. But who knows if treatment would have saved him, since he never received it when he initially asked.

Good afternoon (evening, night or morning), Pete. Another fine SoT selection. Personal pick today (and again, this list in no particular order)? Going for a twofer - Claude Hudson "Butch' Trucks and John Lee Johnson - better known as either Jaimoe or Jai Johanny Johnson - both of whom were founding members of The Allman Brothers Band. Some of the first rock drummers seen live at the Battle of the Bands mentioned in other posts where I saw the band play in September 1969 prior to the release of the debut album. Can recall the stage hands setting up for the band to play and wondering aloud why it looked like they were setting up to completely separate drum sets. Butch and Jaimoe soon answered that question with resounding reasons. The entire band was mesmerizing even though they only played three songs - though one jammed on a bit. The albums for today? The eponymous band debut, of course, along with the follow-ups Idlewild South and the live album At Fillmore East. Favorite song? For today, have to go with Whipping Post - studio or live but live really shows this pair a bit more. Thanks, Pete. Looking forward to your next selection.
Saturday November 23. Stewart Copeland (The Police). 😃👍. I love all of his work with The Police. However, his guest drumming on Peter Gabriel’s “Red Rain” from the album So (1986) creates the rain by his expert use of the hi-hat. 🔥. Hi everyone, in nice and early today! So, on to my 23rd alphabetically listed drummer and today, as I'm yet again off on my travels, I'm going to be pretty straight to the point which is, tellingly, exactly how to describe this guy's technique. PHIL RUDD of AC/DC Despite some offstage issues that kept him out of the picture for a while, during which rime he was replaced by the more than capable likes of Simon Wright and Chris Slade, Rudd has always been the band's sticksman of choice, forming a formidable solid rhythm section with bassist Cliff Wllliams and providing groove and power to the band's trademark sound. 3 album picks would have to be...and yes, it's the obvious suspects again: Powerage Highway To Hell Back In Black And my track is also a bit of a classic, "High Voltage"...

@@christophercoles4401 Cool pick Chris. He had some pretty complex music at times to play on.
"It's very hard to know how to communicate in a band like that where the individuals are competent enough to produce their own kinds of sounds, it's very hard to write for a band like that."
Albums- Discipline Red(King Crimson)and Close To The Edge(Yes)
Song- Red

This guy and his little brother came up with about A hundred rhythm n riff greats, I wonder how many are in the vault? Obviously overshadowed by King Edward, seldom played the same beats on different songs. Had to play The concerts with a neck brace for a while.
Hot for Teacher, On Fire,
Light up the Sky, Romeo delight, Mean Street, Dirty Movies, Full Bug, House of Pain, 5150, Dreams - I think the electronic drums are sort of cool, Cabo wabo,

Surprised, thought Paice would have been a little higher! 1. Machine Head, 2. In Rock, 3. Fireball
My pick #8 is Mitch Mitchell ( The Jimi Hendrix Experience ). Ian Paice made my list too. I ranked him #15.
Fantastic pick! I saw him live with Gary Moore and he was just like a machine, perfect!
I agree Ian is underrated and also agree Fireball has amazing drum work on that song.

21st Century Schizoid Man live in Mexico.

I first saw him play live with the Screaming Headless Torsos, not knowing who he or the band were.

8. LEE KERSLAKE (Uriah Heep, Ozzy)
Lee’s early years as a musician started in the second half of the 60s, when he was with “The Gods”, a group with rather unknown talented musicians at the time, who later in the 70s became highly popular in other bands.
Mick has always said that he loved Lee that much as if he had been his brother… not just a friend

Rest in peace, Lee… and thank you for all the beautiful music.

Cozy Powell Albums: Rainbow Rising(1976), Jeff Beck Group(1972) & Whitesnake Slide It In(1984) Song “Slide It In”.

Steely Dan: "Pretzel Logic" released on ABC records in '74.
Traffic: " The low spark of high-heeled boys" released on Island Records in '71
Jim Gordon performed on countless rock bands as a session drummer throughout the sixties.

Hi everyone, in nice and early today! So, on to my 23rd alphabetically listed drummer and today, as I'm yet again off on my travels, I'm going to be pretty straight to the point which is, tellingly, exactly how to describe this guy's technique.
PHIL RUDD of AC/DC
Despite some offstage issues that kept him out of the picture for a while, during which rime he was replaced by the more than capable likes of Simon Wright and Chris Slade, Rudd has always been the band's sticksman of choice, forming a formidable solid rhythm section with bassist Cliff Wllliams and providing groove and power to the band's trademark sound.
