I was at mass last Sunday in the church where Tolkien and Edith got married... ST Mary's, the modest but peaceful catholic church in Warwick. It is lovely to know they were there.
What a wonderful interview. Thank you, Drs. Ward and Ordway. This reminds me a lot of the work that Joseph Pearce has done to shed light on the Catholic influence on the works of Wilde and Shakespeare.
By the way I am not convinced that England is no longer anti catholic. We are not attacked in the normal course of events, but our divergence from mainstream cultural norms does provoke a backlash. The C of E is more embedded, and responsive to, the prevailing culture.
It seems to me that Joseph Pearce's biography would have highlighted Tolkien's faith so I don't think it's fair to say that there were no biographies which highlighted his faith.
I think I would say: "Unless you SINCERELY TRY to live the Sermon on the Mount you are not a true Christian." Only one human being in history could truly live that Sermon, and He was also God.
