Report this to the NHTSA because they have open investigations on them and theres another class action lawsuit opened in South Carolina against Hyundai and their 2015 sonatas. Which are starting to have these same issues. I my engine is limping and I’m pretty sure it’s a knock sensor issue and not the engine it’s self. I’m getting a diagnostics run on it tomorrow and if it is the knock sensor I have to wait 1.5 months before Hyundai can even see me. Ridiculous.

I purchased a Optima. Did the recall for knock sensor to be added, eight days engine coded and had to be replaced. My vehicle was at dealership for almost 2 months due to backlog for engine problems. Engine was replaced, but 10 days later, engine lit on and car stopped. This time faulty sensor. Car ran for 10 days and while driving slowed to a complete stop. Had it towed to dealership (3 previous tows) to find out it needs a new transmission. I have continued to make car payments. No loaners. No car. My closest Hyundai dealership is an hour away. They won’t be able to get my car in to be looked at for a month and a half. That’s unacceptable. I’m pretty sure I’m having a knock sensor issue and not actually an engine issue itself. My abs lights came on and then a few hours later the engine light started blinking and my car went into limp mode. No knocking noises tho. I’m hoping that I can get my car driving condition tomorrow if it is just the knock sensor and then have complete diagnostics ran at the dealer in a month and half in case there’s something that becomes a catastrophic engine failure and needs replacements.. and that’s covered by all Hyundais who have the latest knock sensor installed which I’m thinking mine does because it’s a later 2015 Hyundai Sonata that I bought dec 31st 2018. No recalls are on my car for a new knock sensor. Hoping this isn’t going to cost me a ton bc I’m broke.

Thanks for the video. What preventive measures can an Hyundai Owner do? Also, have the journal oil flow issue been corrected with the newer models. What weight oil do you recommend since there are 3 different weights listed in the Owners manual all are suitable for the NJ area?
Seems like Hyundai found a way to screw people with this update by making it a requirement to be able to be eligible for the limited lifetime warranty. These dumb judges and lawyers fell for it. All the update does is make the knock sensor more sensitive to try and save an engine that has already started to fail by putting it into limp mode. This should of never been a campaign but a recall on all engines for safety reasons. They also lied in the owners manual by stating they recommend oil changes at 7,500 miles for normal use and 5,000 miles for more heavy use but all these engines are burning a quart of oil every 500-1,000 miles leaving the car bone dry by the next oil change. Rod bearings are failing because of the way the engine was engineered. It is a faulty engine that is bound to fail no matter what a consumer does to try and prevent it. These am engines were built to fail by design.
My car Tucson 2019 passed the bearing clearance test. The knock sensor has been replaced, ECM software up to date and yet it still goes into limp mode. They have done a reset of adaptive values twice now but it comes back after 50km plus of driving ... What's the next step please?
@@SEsGarage Well they cleared the ECM code again and it came back after 400km of driving. The end result is a complete engine change under warranty taking X number of weeks not guaranteed due to ordering the parts first before fixing. I traded it in and got redesigned 2023 model instead.
I'm having the same exact problem BCT passed, ECM update performed and still randomly comes on. Dealer keeps pushing me away and saying its not under warranty.
Hi I got the p1236 code for my 2019 Kia Sportage, 75k miles, would this be covered by my warranty, I recall Kia saying they covered 100k but not sure if they try to play hardball
I just got a P1326 code with a flashing Check Engine light on a 2016 Santa Fe 2.0. But the only symptom is that the car doesn't accelerate past 35 mph, no knocking, etc. I read the TSB (Tech Service Bulletin) and it says that the issue is the Knock Sensor Harness...If that's the case, I can just swap harnesses...or should the dealer do this?
My check engine light started blinking on Saturday I have a 2011 Kia Optima… did a test on it with same code … dealerships said it would be up to 2 weeks before they can look at it !! It turns on but has a terrible knocking sound!!!!
Dirty injectors can cause the flashing check engine light. Did a pressure feed fuel injector cleaning service by removing the FI fuse, detaching the FI line from the HP pump and connecting a quart container with FI cleaner concentrate pressurized to 50 psi to my air compressor. Ran the car for around 10 minutes till the cleaner ran out. Test drove, problem solved.
Is this on a 2.0L engine? If not, how much different would it be on a 2017 Kia Sorento 2.0L Turbo? Can't seem to find that specifically online. Just the 2.4, for some reason.
Very good information and explanation,8 months ago remplace a crankshaft, rods and piston on a 2.4l Hyundai with the same code after that remplace knock sensor and harness from sensor to pcm(I use sand paper to give more tolerance in the crankshaft part main and rod bearing to avoid the original problem..
@@mikem5475 hi,you use sand paper in the crankshaft nobin the bearings, the tolerance that you looking for is 0.0015"INCHES so that helps to the oil go truth in a Hidrodynamic Lubrication.I been doing that in gasoline and diesel engines for 40 year, the last one was a Hyundai Sonata 2.4l ..
Great video! Well done. I just replaced the knock sensor from below on a '13 Hyundai Accent with a factory sensor. I cleared the code. Now car will occasionally not start immediately (1 out of 5 attempts). Any ideas? Does computer default settings need to be reset. Why is proper torque so important on these sensors? I could not properly torque down since I came up from below, and had no room for wrench. I also sprayed WD40 in threaded bolt hole before replacing since bolt was very hard to un-seize. Thank you.
The knock sensor should have nothing to do with a hard start issue. Torque value is important for the knock sensors because overtorquing it can cause false ratings and make the sensor over sensitive to knock detection. Be sure that you didn’t interfere with the fuel injector harness or anything while replacing the sensor and also check for vacuum leaks.
How do you reset the adaptive values if you're replacing the knock sensor at home? If I clear the codes and possibly disconnect and reconnect the battery after install would it work?
also caused by water at the sensor harness (let dry few days) or false KSDS alert - make sure Hyundai put the latest KSDS software variant, there were several improved versions of the software.
I have a '13 Elantra with the rod knock.took to dealer charged me $250 for diagnostic to confirm. Idk if this is the test they did,but when i got the car back I immediately noticed it seemed like it wasn't accelerating like it was before they looked at it,seems like it's lagging or something. I assume they did the knock sensor update on it. Wish i were near you to do the diagnostic
A few days ago i went to get an oil change and my car went into limp mode on the highway this morning. I checked the oil and it was overfilled and now it’s at the dealership getting looked at smh my question is could this happen from my oil being overfilled? It’s the only thing I could think of and the enigine has less then 50k Km
I have a 2014 Kia optima 2.0T and I got this code two days ago I’m hesitant on if I should change the sensor myself I’m the second owner of the car and I don’t know if this already happened to the first owner and if he already took it to the dealer to get dealt with
Question… I had the bearing clearance test done and they said they needed to add oil to do the test as the air was going around the cylinder due to a bad ring. Would this be considered a failed bearing test? Thanks
What would you recommend for me to do. 100k 2016 Optima and got the error code and went into low power mode. Got towed and the reset and reprogrammed WVU for knock sensor
Can you update the knock sensor if the engine doesn’t turn over or can you replace a knock sensor with a new one with the new update already installed on it? Or is there a way to somehow get the update by other means like extending the wire on the knock sensor and putting it into another car so the computer thinks that it was updated.
@MayKen Replacing it wont do much, it needs the update from dealership. Only way to get the lifetime warranty. Even with the update it probably wont help.
If done early enough in the engines life and in regular intervals they absolutely help keep the carbon at bay! Once the carbon has set in there’s not much that will clean them minus removing the intake manifold and walnut blasting/scrubbing the valves and ports!
I have a 2014 well maintained with 2.4 almost 50,000 miles and have the code back for a second time (the last at 25,000 the dealer said if was the wire harness and replaced it. Now the scanner says “glow relay short circuit.”
I don't have that software you are using to reset adaptive values. If I change the knock sensor and don't reset values then what ? Is reset adaptive values mandatory ?
I know when the TSB they specifically tell you to reset adaptives, and I’ve never not reset them, so I’m really not sure what would happen if you didn’t if I’m completely honest

Got a question for you, our 2013 Kia Optima with the 2.4 got the SC147 recall done back in 2018 however I'm 95 percent sure the engine is blown on it. Is there anything that can be done since the recall was already complete? Kinda sucks that the recall was done and shortly after the engines decides to quit with 120k on it.
I'm wanting to purchase this entire tool the Sylvac with the probe setup can tell me any other information on this specific tool setup or a tool number of some sort thanks
Hey there. Great video and great info! My mother in law just had this issue on her 13 sorento. Also, at 2500 miles into the oil change, it was very low! Consuming oil is my guess. Kia did all tests and check bearing clearance and said all was good. My huge favor question to you is: What tolerances are considered acceptable and what's bad?? 0.003 good, and 0.005 bad? I am not sure. I dont know their tolerances and I'd like to know if she is on the cusp of bad things happening or not? Thanks a ton in advance!
Added note... now nervous after watching this and seeing your comments. Wife just bought a 21 sportage, and sister just bought a 22 sportage, both with the 2.4. Oh boy.....
What is that rod clearing tool called? My kia optima 2013 eats my oil every 2 months. I am constantly havinf to refuel it. I took it to the kia dealer and was told i need to pay $850.
I chatted with a mechanic that does these repairs.. He said at one time it was nothing to have 25 waiting to be repaired. He said Hyundai cut the labor hours and it is about impossible to make anything doing these jobs. All the good mechanics are quitting and going elsewhere.
Thanks for sharing,I had a P200A,it’s gone now but I took your advice and listened to the VCM it sounds ok.I will watch in case the engine light comes back on..I sure hope not…
we’re you losing gas and having problems accelerating w a blinking engine light ? I have a 2016 Kia Sorento 107,000 miles car drives but have parked because engine light blinking and gas has been getting eaten Knock noise is very low but you can hear it but not when drive kindve goes away getting towed in morning What do you think?
I'm getting a pinging noise on an Accent 2013 16L when going uphill - I think the knock sensor CEL came on once, but it was reset and it did not return. But I still get the pinging noise / spark knock. What is best course of action?
So you have one of two issues. First off, make sure you’re using top tier fuels. If they are subpar fuel and less resistant to knock this will happen. Second. Have you ever done an induction service on the car? Carbon backup on the back of the intake valves, and top of pistons is common on these GDI engines and should be done every 15-20k miles. Check my video on induction services out th-cam.com/video/TLVAYKDanyw/w-d-xo.html
It’s the rod bearing’s p1326 is a rod bearing if you don’t hear no noise coming from the engine at all then u might just need a knock sensor or software update which is not common so look for noises then u can go from the noise cause of there is your bearing RIP
Thank you for sharing this clear and to the point explanation of this code and test! We have a 2017 Santa Fe 2.4L that was just towed and sitting at the dealership waiting for this check Monday morning. I did a quick check with my code reader and it’s got the P1326 after flashing the CEL and going into limp mode a short distance before getting home. Nice to know what they should be doing. Question - to engines that fail the clearance test, are they always making noise or does this pickup the issue before they die? Take care!
I took my 2017 sportage with 105,000 miles to the dealer for the P1326 fault they checked the bearing clearance it passed. Then they installed a software update and fixed it. No charge covered under extended warranty. Just sharing with everyone that might need to know.
Any issues since your software update you got your car back? I just got the same answer about my 2016 Kia Sorento from the Kia dealership. Now I get to drive it home (7 hours) and I'm a little concerned about how long it will take for the P1326 to reappear.

I have seen other videos where the code on the vehicle was P1326 but their repair was to replace the intake runner motor which should have been code P200A for the runner. Do Kia and Hyundai have a problem with their computer system???
How was that tool measuring main bearing clearance? The way I’ve been taught the only way to measure main bearing clearance is by using a mic and a bore gauge or with plastigauge. Or is that like a compression tester?
Air pushes the piston down, then air sucks the piston up. The up and down of the piston will show clearances of both the piston wrist pin AND the main bearings all at once. Apparently, the wrist pins never develop play so whatever measurement you get, if its outa spec its always the mains on that engine.. Theretically you can do this test without the tool, but you would need to find a way to setup a dial indicator in a way that it cant move. Pull the piston down by rotating the crank and stop halfway. Then setup the dial and feeler and then manually push the piston top downward without disrupting the dial setup.
its usually pretty cut and dry. Any time that code is thrown we have to run a bearing clearance test. If that passes, and the PCM has the latest software we'll look at the knock sensor. If its reading a higher voltage than its supposed to, it gets replaced. if the bearing test fails, it gets an engine

I own it already its at the dealer getting diagnosed for knock sensor

That clearance tool is innovative and cool, amazing invention. Do they ever do an oil analysis to check for contamination?
Thanks for the video. What preventive measures can an Hyundai Owner do? Also, have the journal oil flow issue been corrected with the newer models. What weight oil do you recommend since there are 3 different weights listed in the Owners manual all are suitable for the NJ area?
Best preventative measures is to prevent yourself from ever buying a Hyundai or Kia again
Going to have to let the dealer do what they need to do
@@SEsGarage Well they cleared the ECM code again and it came back after 400km of driving.
Just started at Kia today and I did this for the first time it’s good to see a video like this to keep it fresh in the memory. Awesome content
Whats was the issue? Im currently having the same problem
I want this guy workin on my cars.
Thank you!
My check engine light started blinking on Saturday I have a 2011 Kia Optima… did a test on it with same code … dealerships said it would be up to 2 weeks before they can look at it !! It turns on but has a terrible knocking sound!!!!
@Amanda Lovee yea I had to get the whole engine replaced! As long as you had the knock and sensor updated theyll replace it for free
Would a vvt solenoid contribute to this problem

@@SEsGarage Thanks!
How do you reset the adaptive values if you're replacing the knock sensor at home? If I clear the codes and possibly disconnect and reconnect the battery after install would it work?
You can try a capacitive discharge. Disconnect both battery cables and touch them together for several minutes
Did putting the two cables together work
also caused by water at the sensor harness (let dry few days) or false KSDS alert - make sure Hyundai put the latest KSDS software variant, there were several improved versions of the software.
It’s the only thing I could think of and the enigine has less then 50k Km

hey good vido. do you think if i replace the crankshaft and piston will eliminate the oil consumption on my 2018 kia optima 2.4l? thanks
Question… I had the bearing clearance test done and they said they needed to add oil to do the test as the air was going around the cylinder due to a bad ring. Would this be considered a failed bearing test? Thanks
No, it would not. They only check for rod bearing clearance
What would you recommend for me to do. 100k 2016 Optima and got the error code and went into low power mode. Got towed and the reset and reprogrammed WVU for knock sensor
Reprogrammed ECU
Hello, is there any other way to reset adaptive values without forking out over 300 bucks for a adequate scanner?
Can you update the knock sensor if the engine doesn’t turn over or can you replace a knock sensor with a new one with the new update already installed on it? Or is there a way to somehow get the update by other means like extending the wire on the knock sensor and putting it into another car so the computer thinks that it was updated.
Did u figure this out?
I just popped a new knock sensor on a 2018 . Not much difference yet
@MayKen Replacing it wont do much, it needs the update from dealership. Only way to get the lifetime warranty. Even with the update it probably wont help.
Great video. Subbed. Is there any validation that tje GDI valve treatment has any benefit ?
If done early enough in the engines life and in regular intervals they absolutely help keep the carbon at bay! Once the carbon has set in there’s not much that will clean them minus removing the intake manifold and walnut blasting/scrubbing the valves and ports!
Would having no oil in the engine cause this code to pop up
I have a 2014 well maintained with 2.4 almost 50,000 miles and have the code back for a second time (the last at 25,000 the dealer said if was the wire harness and replaced it. Now the scanner says “glow relay short circuit.”
Is there an update on your repair ?
I don't have that software you are using to reset adaptive values. If I change the knock sensor and don't reset values then what ? Is reset adaptive values mandatory ?
I know when the TSB they specifically tell you to reset adaptives, and I’ve never not reset them, so I’m really not sure what would happen if you didn’t if I’m completely honest
was this car making any actual knocking sounds before you worked on it or just the light came on
Just the light no abnormal engine noises

If you hear an actual knock/misfire would you suggest to replace all coils, plugs and knock sensors?
No, have the car properly diagnosed
Got a question for you, our 2013 Kia Optima with the 2.4 got the SC147 recall done back in 2018 however I'm 95 percent sure the engine is blown on it. Is there anything that can be done since the recall was already complete? Kinda sucks that the recall was done and shortly after the engines decides to quit with 120k on it.
they changed the recall for SC147 instead its 15 years with unlimited miles....take it back to Kia if it's still running

They replace the faulty knock sensor.
Oh boy.....

Knock noise is very low but you can hear it but not when drive kindve goes away getting towed in morning
What do you think?
Will the KS code remain in the history after its been cleared?
Was there any follow if the concern ever came back?
I'm getting a pinging noise on an Accent 2013 16L when going uphill - I think the knock sensor CEL came on once, but it was reset and it did not return. But I still get the pinging noise / spark knock. What is best course of action?
So you have one of two issues. First off, make sure you’re using top tier fuels. If they are subpar fuel and less resistant to knock this will happen. Second. Have you ever done an induction service on the car? Carbon backup on the back of the intake valves, and top of pistons is common on these GDI engines and should be done every 15-20k miles. Check my video on induction services out

I did a quick check with my code reader and it’s got the P1326 after flashing the CEL and going into limp mode a short distance before getting home. Nice to know what they should be doing.
Question - to engines that fail the clearance test, are they always making noise or does this pickup the issue before they die?

I appreciate you showing what is involved in checking the clearances. Lots show the rest but not that bit. Good video.

Wait so were you getting a knocking sound from the engine at all? Did you hear anything whileengine was running?

Either motor or Knox sensor
its usually pretty cut and dry. Any time that code is thrown we have to run a bearing clearance test. If that passes, and the PCM has the latest software we'll look at the knock sensor. If its reading a higher voltage than its supposed to, it gets replaced. if the bearing test fails, it gets an engine
