    The fact that you don't charge if you don't fix it shows a lot about your integrity Mr. O. That restores a bit of faith in humanity. There are still honest real people out there.

Watching some people on TH-cam is utter torture. But watching your videos is a comedic refreshing reality of what a mechanic should do in this industry. Good on ya!

    Wow! I am a long term admirer of your skilled trouble shooting, but amazed at you willingness to rip into the complex wiring underneath the fuse box, and then drive to find (and trust) a junkyard replacement for the entire fusebox. You would still have been a hero just bypassing the defective connection with a fused link (and saved yourself several hours of frustration, and no risk of 100% disabling the car if the junkyard fusebox was incompatible).

I imagine Eric sees problems as challenges and has a desire to take the time and solve problems logically. Kudos to Eric O. And I would wager that the owner of this here 2004 Kia has a new mechanic. It's a win-win deal. Don't be surprised if Mrs. O. has Hannah watch the front, the phone and the kiddo and goes to the sale.

He has been gone a long time now and I still meet people who praise him and tell me that they wouldn't let anyone check the hood except him and his employees. God is watching and will bless you. People used to say I was richer than I knew because they trusted him for 35 years.

      It's terrible. I have a customer who brought her Subaru in because it started running crappy. It had misfire codes so they changed spark plugs and changed the oil and did some other kind of BS to it such as "intake service" or something like that and it cost $43x and it didn't fix a damn thing.
      I go to pick it up and bring it to my shop. Just by cranking the engine I could hear a dead cylinder and there was plenty of visible blue smoke out the exhaust. Hmmm. I wonder. Could this have mechanical issues in the engine?
      Literally a 5 minute, no tools diagnosis to tell with great confidence that it needed major engine work or replacement. $430 something dollars right down the toilet.

    I really enjoy how you take the viewer along to the junkyard. By the way, I had to do a similar test to troubleshoot an issue with my brother's 1998 Chevy Prizm's HID lights that would not turn off. In the process of digging around checking fuses, relays and cables, I accidentally fixed a non-intrusive DRL issue the car has had for 15 years haha. In any case, I love watching your videos.

He knows how to film, and make you feel like you’re there , in person, watching him as he works on cars. He also gets deep into how car parts or car components fail. I’m surprised he didn’t tear apart that fuse box to show us the open circuit within it. Either way, Yes; I have to agree with you on how awesome this channel is. Good job Eric. I'm afraid I've have gone with an external fuse once you verified the wire was good. The worse part of this whole story is that the dealer didn't do this level of diagnostics. Then again, their labor charge likely would have been higher than the value of the vehicle.

    This is an excellent video. You have a very good understanding of electrical circuits and very good troubleshooting techniques. You did the best repair by replacing the fuse box and not rewiring the circuit to an add on fuse. I hope you charged the customer for every second of time you had in this job because you deserve it. The KIA dealer deserves everything you said.
    You guessed it, I have something to add. While I find no fault with anything you did I do have a question/suggestion to help you add something to your electrical troubleshooting. I noticed that your troubleshooting techniques only involve power on live circuit troubleshooting. While there are times when this is the only way to find a problem there are also many times when this is not necessary. It is not needed when tracing an open circuit conductor. In this case you had a large jumper cable type alligator clip attached to an unprotected terminal on the fuse box. This could have easily created a massive short circuit. You also powered up terminal C11 in the fuse box without knowing for certain that you were on the correct connector. You did this with the test light which theoretically helps because you have the resistance of the light to limit current but you must remember that the resistance of an incandescent bulb is zero ohms when cold. You could have damaged something if you energized the wrong C11.
    An easier and and safer method of troubleshooting an open conductor is to use an ohm meter. No live power is safer and easier since you do not have to connect an external power source to the circuit. You could use the ohm meter to check continuity on the wire in question as well as checking continuity through the fuse box and the fuse itself. This would require a long test lead in this case but I think it is worth it. Please accept this suggestion as it is not criticism. I would not waste my time writing this to a lesser competent technician. I would bring my car to you for repair service.

    Like I’ve stated before, I’m driving to your location from Queens, NY when I’m ready to swap out the engine of my Matrix.
    I wish I could feel comfortable with my dealerships around my way. The sad thing is in my opinion from my experience,... today there’s a lot of ASE Certified mechanics who aren’t really that qualified at all! They lack experience and knowledge.

    They do make a "wire piercing probe"... basically it hooks over a wire, you tighten a small probe through the insulation and into the wire, and then your meter lead (or test light) connects to the socket on the probe. Search for " pamona wire piercing probe" for some photos. Nice thing about this type of probe is that it stays where you put it and makes a secure connection. Great video!!

    Excellent diagnostic. It may have easier to ie a continuity checker rather than using two testers. I found this on Amazon. It appears to send an RF signal down the wire and has a Detector to test for that signal without penetrating the wire. Never the less a brilliant diagnosis. It would have been interesting to take a look inside the unit which I suspect is a PCB.

Married twice, my heart broken many times and single 25 years. You have something very special together. More than kids and the shop. God bless you both, always.

    One of your videos helped me today, the Dodge Ram ignition switch one. ( other shops screw ups) we were at a shop here and my sister car has same thing, no windows, no a/c etc. and only once in a while like the Dodge Ram did... found out the rack and piñon is going bad too, not the wheel bearings! But I remembered this and told them about your vid. Thanks!

    I watched this all the way through, rewound a couple of times to understand Eric's logic and I come to the conclusion that Eric is a genius. I would have sent it to a crusher but Eric prints out a load of wiring diagrams AND was able to make this numpty understand what he was doing. I couldn't do what Eric does but I can appreciate a genius at work when I see one. This one boggled my brain but through logical explanation even I was able to understand the why and the how even though Eric has more electrical and mechanical expertise in his little finger than I have in my entire body and I'm not on the dumb side either. This one knocked it out of the Park for me. Genius. Amazing work, great video and even if I could never solve this myself, ever, I understood how Eric did it. Brilliant video, thank you so much for breaking it down to the basic diagrams to help me understand what and how you did what you did. Kudos Eric, really enjoyed this one.

    Righteous man of integrity. Way to keep up the trade in a moral way. I see so many customers that go through the same crap at suposidly great shops and dealers than come to me after a customer somehow refers them and I get it right and don't break their wallet. It's a shame the other shops get rich and I break even. Oh well at least I can sleep at night, maybe not on a expensive mattress but sleep well.

    Great diagnostic techniques. I taught automotive electrical diagnosis for years and I almost quit looking at the video when you pulled out at test light, but you used it in a very acceptable manner. Good job, I'll subscribe.

    • @davidhall3747

      The Test Light(s) are good diagnostic tools- but if used in conjunction with the Power Probe it makes troubleshooting much more easier and efficient. I would love to see Eric use the Power Probe in the future.

    • @chrisbentleywalkingandrambling
      @chrisbentleywalkingandrambling 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be nice to see what he charges but there must be a locally agreed price for labour/labor in the Town or the work wouldn't come his way. But mind you the amount of Cars he fixes and the queue for work means that word of mouth is enough to keep Eric in business for the rest of time. Word of mouth is the best recommendation plus if locals watch the channel they will see the quality of his workmanship and his tenacity to get a job done correctly without bodging it. You can't fake a video like this. Quality. But the short answer, yes. Would be interesting to find it out.

  • @mailpup

    The Kia dealer actually did the car owner a favor. If they had found the problem and fixed it, they would have used an expensive brand new factory fuse box (which might not have been in stock) and installed it with dealer labor rates. The only downside was the car owner had to spend time taking it all over the place before finding SMA. This way the car was fixed for a reasonable amount and SMA got some business. Win, win. I know there is the matter of the $98 dealer charge but consider it money well spent since it resulted in finding SMA. Still a win.

  • @dyizhere
    @dyizhere 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I was sitting here yelling at the screen saying just look for continuity between the fuse and the wire in C11 to see if that is the right green wire but then it hit me.....dummy you can't do that because that is where your problem is. Great video as usual.
